Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unusual situation in universities. All students, lecturers and administration staff had to start distance education. Suddenly, overnight, they all became the subjects of the digital revolution. This text is an overview of selected literature from 2020 compiled to reflect on the differences and similarities between higher education institutions in Poland and the United States as they reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite their inherent differences the two different systems of higher education in these two countries have reacted to the pandemic in a number of similar ways. It could be observed that the more independent system in the United States reacted faster to the unexpected changes, when faculty and higher education administrators waited for a decision from the centrally governing body: The Ministry of Education. The reaction and focus of the interventions pointed to similar areas: access to technology for students and their teachers, professional development of faculty, and student engagement. It seems that in both cases the pandemic exposed the shortcomings of both systems. While there are many unknows about the future, the common question for both systems will centre around making higher education institutions nimble enough to emerge from these challenging times better and stronger.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected education in the vast majority of countries around the world. Educational systems were not prepared for this. This also extends to higher education. Certain measures have been taken in attempt to enable teaching in the new reality. The pandemic is global in nature and the changes in education have a similar aspect as well. After 12 March 2020, distance education was also introduced in Poland. Several months of distance learning have yielded some interesting experiences and shown the problems that arise when designing such educational systems. Due to the epidemic situation that is still far from being under control, it should be assumed that distance education will remain with us for longer. The article presents the results of research on distance learning in Poland in the first period of the pandemic in relation to the global situation. It focuses on academic teachers and the challenges they have faced when switching to distance learning.

Opis:
Despite the explosion of studies on social consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak, still little is known about the situation of teachers. This research report presents results of a study on teacher’s attitudes toward distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic and their associations with selected characteristicsrelated to the teacher’s profession. The study consisted in answering questions in an online survey. Nearly eight hundred correctly completed surveys were collected. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to compare differences between the variables. The results show that the lowest averages on a Likert-type scale describe the cognitive component of attitudes, and the highest ones describe the behavioral component. Awareness of problems with the implementation of the curriculum and basic tasks of the school in the form of a distance education result in teachers’ competence increase and taking specific action. Gender and seniority are not associated with the teachers’ attitudes toward distance education. The type of school and the level of education were associated with attitudes towards distance education. Special schools teachers had the worst experience with distance education. The possible implications of these outcomes are discussed.

Opis:
The main aim of the article is to determine which neologisms were created in the German language at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of education. The choice to focus on education and school concepts is based on the fact that it is considered one of the fundamental areas of people’s lives. Since schooling is compulsory in Germany, this topic affects every citizen. The structure of the article is as follows: first, the pandemic-related changes in the field of education are briefly discussed. Next, the term neologism is explained in more detail, as well as the functions and the types of neologisms that can be distinguished. The core of the article is the presentation and discussion of the results of the empirical analysis. 81 neologisms from the field of education created during the coronavirus pandemic were subjected to the analysis. They refer to various branches of the education system and name, among other things, periods of time, but also persons and school concepts, which is why they were assigned to eight semantic categories: Change of the education system, evaluation of learning outcomes, character of learning and teaching, description of a particular period, description of individuals, feelings, support and final evaluation. Within the groups, antonyms and synonyms could be found. The article also explains the reasons for the creation of the neologisms.

Opis:
The introduction of remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic has changed the way of working with gifted students. The article presents the results of a survey conducted among parents of gifted students aged 10–15 years. The parents filled out an electronic questionnaire containing both open- and closed-ended questions. Data were collected on 1,477 gifted children. The aim of the research is to diagnose the opportunities, possibilities, and limitations of the development of gifted students aged 10–15 (grades 4–8, secondary education) under the distance learning during the pandemic. The subject of the study is an analysis of selected elements of educating gifted students during the pandemic. The results indicate that 36.8% of students had comfortable conditions for remote learning (their own computer and room and a good Internet connection). The students’ involvement in learning and independence were differentiated by their ability. The girls were significantly more involved than the boys and were statistically significantly more independent. The students’ involvement correlated positively with their independence. The main themes of the parents’ statements regarding the possibilities and advantages of remote education were saving time, developing and strengthening academic competences, developing existing or acquiring new skills, maintaining children’s safety and using IT tools during online learning. The students mainly developed their interests and abilities on their own, often with the support of the family, using the media or referring to online resources. No systemic support for gifted students was indicated.

Aim. The aim of the contribution is to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Slovak economy. We analyzed the pertinent data relating to Slovakia's economy, tourism, and education infrastructures, and also the measures introduced during the pandemic which affected them. Methods. The paper is mainly based on descriptive, analytical and statistical methods, and based on global statistics data, studies, and research conducted in this field. Results. In 2020, the Slovak economy decreased by 9.3%. The reason was not only domestic measures against the spread of the coronavirus, but also a slump in foreign demand. The growth of the Slovak economy had already slowed during 2019, even before the onset of the COVID-19 disease. Extensive travel restrictions, especially at the international level, fundamentally affected the total number of visitors, in particular during the period March to August 2021. Almost 1.6 million visitors stayed in hotels, boarding houses, and other accommodation facilities in Slovakia during this period of the pandemic, which represented a decrease of almost 54% when compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.     Conclusion. The significant deterioration of the economy was the result of a large number of significant restrictive measures taken to stop the spread of the COVID-19 disease. The factor of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the future of tourism and education, bringing changes to their direction and economic benefits. This pandemic has significantly affected education in Slovakia and worldwide, and we are following its transformation.

This article presents the fundamental challenges facing education after the COVID-19 pandemic — technological, social, political and ecological. The author suggests that post-pandemic the most important problems will not be related to its effects, but to building civic and environmental awareness. Technological challenges, in the form of the necessity of expanding the repertoire of the technical means of education, and social challenges in the form of the need to rebuild relationships, were important in the pandemic phase, and their strongest impact was delineated at the very beginning. After a return to the new normality (however it may be defined), challenges of this type will not disappear completely, but their strength will become weaker when compared to the problems humanity has faced practically from the beginning of the 21st century.

Opis:
This article presents the system of higher education (HE) in Poland and the role of remote (and later online) learning in education with the focus on changes induced as the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis begins with a historical background that shows how higher education has been changing after the political transformation of the 1989, and proceeds with a discussion about the conditions in which remote learning emerged. On the one hand, these conditions relate to the existing programmes that e-learning offers – the tools. On the other hand, they refer to the level of digital preparedness – the skills. The article is meant to be descriptive and combines didactic (both institutional and student-related) and administrative perspective of responding to COVID-19. The article analyses how the Polish HE system managed the transition to online teaching caused by the pandemic.

Opis:
Background. The study was conducted to determine the attitudes of university students who received online education during the pandemic towards COVID-19 vaccines. Material and methods. This descriptive and correlational type study was conducted between April and June 2021. There were approximately 2,500 students studying at a private university in Istanbul during the 2020-2021 academic year, and the sample size was 222. The data collection tools used included the student information form and the Perception and Attitude Scale Related with COVID-19 pandemic. The data were analyzed using number, percentage, mean and Student’s t-test, Mann Whitney U-test and one way ANOVA. Results. The mean positive attitude score towards COVID-19 vaccines was 3.37, and the negative attitude score towards COVID-19 vaccines was 3.24. It was concluded that students’ attitudes towards the vaccine were undecided. Conclusions. Factors such as age, gender, residential area, family type, presence of chronic disease or being diagnosed with COVID-19 do not make a significant difference in the attitude of students towards COVID-19 vaccines. Marital status was the only significant factor that made a difference in attitude towards COVID-19 vaccines.
Wprowadzenie. Celem badania było określenie postaw studentów uczelni wyższych, którzy w okresie pandemii korzystali z edukacji online, wobec szczepionki przeciw COVID-19. Materiał i metody. Wyniki.

Aim. This paper aims to bring forth how the basic right of education got adversely affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The unplanned and immediate shift to online classes adversely affected the students’ physical and mental health as several issues that the students faced were related to the lack of adequate resources. Methods. The data for this paper were collected through a self-prepared and structured questionnaire, using Google forms, which was then circulated among different stakeholders of the educational institutes. The statistical analysis of the collected data was done using Microsoft Excel. Results and conclusion. According to the analysis of the survey, smartphones (75% of the total respondents) are relatively more accessible by students in comparison to computers or laptops (53%). And even if students had internet connectivity (57%), they faced issues of low data bandwidth (39%) leading to poor quality of online interaction in classes. Another important analysis suggested that 57% of students lacked a quiet room or space to attend the online classes in their homes. Finally, the negative impacts of online classes on the physical and mental health of students were also analysed. Cognitive value. The findings and the analysis of this paper would thus help teachers and institutions to understand students’ views and experiences of the pandemic. This understanding would help teachers to plan their teaching plans accordingly bridging the digital divide which would help students learn and grow.

Priorytetową sprawą pozostaje wypracowanie bardziej sprawiedliwej i włączającej edukacji. Zamknięcie szkół i zdalna edukacja negatywnie wpłynęły na kondycję psychiczną uczniów i ich rodziców. Istnieje pilna potrzeba tworzenia systemowych rozwiązań oraz określenie nowych priorytetów w edukacji uwzględniających potrzeby osób dotkniętych skutkami pandemii.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Based on the results of Polish and international research, the aim of the article is to show how the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, related to the closure of schools and remote education, have reorganized the educational and family environment, influencing the functioning of children and adolescents.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article is a review. By discussing the results of the research, I try to answer the question: what are and what may be the consequences of closing schools and remote education in various dimensions of the functioning of children and adolescents?THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: In the first part, I focus on the short- and longterm consequences of school closure and remote education, primarily in the area of teaching-learning. In the second part, I refer to day by day functioning of children, adolescents, their parents/carers, and related to, among others, with the quality of mutual relations or the level of well-being.RESEARCH RESULTS: The research results indicate the exclusion from the education system of students who had an unfavorable educational situation before the pandemic. The new model of education negatively affected the psychological well-being of children, adolescents and their parents/carers, creating a fertile ground for the development of e.g. parental stress, domestic violence. There have also been positive effects of remote education, including better functioning and more effective learning of selected groups of students.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Education systems lack solutions that would effectively prevent the exclusion of numerous groups of students. In the long run, this will contribute to deepening economic and social disproportions in the world. Developing fairer and more inclusive education remains a priority. School closure and remote education negatively affected the mental health of students and their parents. There is an urgent need to create systemic solutions and define new priorities in education that take into account the needs of people affected by the effects of the pandemic.

This paper presents the results of a study that explored the experiences of adult educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. This online survey was conducted in June 2020 and included directors and teachers in adult education from various institutions in Slovenia. Tutors at Slovenian Third-Age Universities and other associations that provided adult education were also included. The aim of our study was to examine how distance education was implemented during the pandemic, using the concept of ‘emergency remote teaching’ (Hodges, 2020). The study sample included 30 directors of adult education institutions and 124 teachers or tutors. The results showed that organisations providing adult education responded during the lockdown by providing adults with the opportunity to continue their education through distance learning. However, this was not the case for all of adult education programmes. Mostly language courses and formal education were offered. The results show that most adult educators quickly adapted to the new working conditions, but that teaching approaches were rather static and asynchronous teaching solutions. An analysis of the problems teachers faced and the support they needed has shown that action is needed to remove the obstacles to the future provision of adult education as much as possible.

The aim of this article is to assess the relationships between remote education, satisfaction with studies, the level of perceived stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the general mental well-being of students. The research was carried out on 91 pedagogy students in June 2020. The results show that over 80 percent of students have a positive opinion of distance learning, and 34 percent are very satisfied with studying pedagogy. Students' assessment of distance learning and their level of satisfaction with their studies are not related to psychological well-being. More than half of the surveyed students show high levels of stress in the first phase of the pandemic. Students experiencing lower levels of stress assess distance learning better than students who experience high levels of stress. Regression analysis shows that the level of stress experienced by students affects their psychological well-being. As the intensity of stress increases, there is a decline in mental well-being. Thus, students have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a research questionnaire conducted among students and lecturers after the first, and repeated after the second, exam session during the pandemic crisis as this was the first time the examinations were conducted by distance education at The Maria Grzegorzewska University (Warsaw, Poland). Lecturers see the advantages of remote examination in the technological possibilities of conducting examinations (automation in checking and assessing the tests and archiving the results), time savings (immediate availability of results, flexibility of examination dates), and organizational improvements. Students indicate the comfort of writing the exam in a friendly environment, which reduces stress, and appreciate the possibility of obtaining results quickly and the need to spend less time on the exam itself. In the case of disadvantages of remote exams, lecturers indicate a lack of control over the independence and integrity of students, and students complain about the stringent time constraints, distractors and stress, as well as the level of the exam (both higher and lower compared to the level of traditional exams) and the adequacy of the grades obtained. Both groups consider technical problems that arise during the exam to be severe. Twenty percent of students admit to using unauthorized assistance during tests and exams. Academic teachers try to reduce the dependence of students by choosing an appropriate form of the exam (problem tasks, oral exams, open-ended questions, test variants), using special strategies (comparing students’ work, control questions, looking for parts of final papers on the Internet), and using technical solutions (requirement of turning on the camera, checking the metadata of files, the need to document work). The search for an effective and appropriate method of verification of learning outcomes is ongoing.
