Author of the article explores the phenomenon of reportage biography in context of Pierre Nora's notion of „age of commemoration”. The crucial feature of this new genre of biographical writing is that the biographers focus on testimonies of people who personally knew the biographical subject instead of reading and re-reading documents gathered in the archives. Such an attitude has several consequences for the poetics of the biography. Biography becomes polyphonic as a scene of dialogue or confrontation of many different voices, different approaches on the subject. Biography becomes also ex-centric which means that biographical narrative concerns not on the subject as a central figure of biographical discourse, but delivers space for the witnesses to express their historical experience, to tell their life stories. Author of the article presents these matters by analyzing Bruno Schulz's biography Schulz pod kluczem and showing how this poliphony of accounts typical for reportage biography works in nostalgic frame of Budzyński's approach.

He connected his scientific thesis with the Institute of Physics of Polish Academy of Science, where he obtained the degree of PhD and PhD with habilitation, later the academic title – Professor of Physical Science. He worked as a director of Institute of Physics (PAS), the chairman of Scientific Council (IF PAS). He was also a member of Scientific Council IF PAS for a long time. He received scientific awards for his work and activity.

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the significant achievements and activities of this chaplain in many areas of his life. He is not a person well known and has not gained a rightful place in the Polish historiography. The author of this dissertation attempted to analyze the role of chaplain in the functioning of the Polish Legions, the battle for Przemyśl and pastoral work in the Polish Army. Also considered the impact of the priest chaplain on the activities of the peasant movement, attempted to determine the degree of the impact of journalism Socio-political face of ideological and programmatic opposition government. The author did not omit the question of the position of chaplain in the structures of conspiracy Lvov under Soviet occupation.

Inspired by Clifford Geertz’s concept, the author analyses blurred genres on the example of biographies, focusing on their contemporary transformations, while scrutinizing their formal, methodological and audience-related (possible reasons behind their popularity) aspects. The ethical dimension of the biographer’s work is crucial, and here it is examined from the perspective of the writer’s personal involvement and the emotional community of readers (as defined by Barbara Rosenwein). The study also analyses biographies when they are perceived as a type of testimony, experience, an act of creating potential histories, or as critical works. From this perspective, writing a biography is like inciting comprehension by re-evaluating the meaning of somebody’s experiences and engaging them with the modern readers’ experience. In all probability, the key is not the authenticity of the presented reality, but enabling the reader to immerse themselves in the flow of the story so that reading the book becomes a significant experience in itself. What the reader seems to require is for the devices that are typical for novel-like narration to be combined with nonfictional forms. Thus, genre blurring is, in fact, a basis for renegotiating the pact between authors and readers, where both sides are well aware of how ambiguous it is to write about an absent third party, realizing that it is necessary to omit facts, be concise, make sense of convoluted events, and to extract the essence in things that seemingly look chaotic.

Tajemnica ciąży Tonki w opowiadaniu Tonka (Tonka) Roberta Musila i tajemnica komnaty Sinobrodego w bajce Sinobrody (La barbe bleue) Charlesa Perraulta są elementami łączącymi oba utwory i inicjującymi poszukiwanie Sinobrodego z tekstu Perraulta w tekście Musila. Sinobrodego można odnaleźć w Tonce, która staje się również jedną z jego żon, ale przede wszystkim ma cechy czyniące z niej matkę Sinobrodego. W ten sposób Musil poszerza biografię Sinobrodego, którego egzystencja wykazuje silne podobieństwo do egzystencji Chrystusa – tym bardziej, że życie Tonki jest głęboko zakorzenione w świecie Biblii i odzwierciedla życie Matki Boskiej: jeśli syn Marii pojawia się w jej łonie w wyniku Dziewiczego Poczęcia, to syn umierającej Tonki przychodzi na świat w wyniku dziewiczych” narodzin.
The parallel between the mystery of Tonka’s pregnancy in Robert Musil’s short story Tonka (Tonka) and the mystery of Bluebeard’s chamber in Charles Perrault’s fairy tale Bluebeard (La barbe bleue) initiates the article’s search for Bluebeard from Perrault’s text in Musil’s text. Bluebeard can be found in Tonka, who becomes one of his wives but, more importantly, also has features that make her Bluebeard’s mother. Thus Musil extends the biography of Bluebeard. His existence bears a strong resemblance to the existence of Christ; analogously, Tonka’s life, deeply rooted in the world of the Bible, parallels the life of Madonna: if Mary’s son appears in her womb in consequence of the Virgin Conception, so also the son of the dying Tonka comes into the world in consequence of the “virgin” birth.
Das Geheimnis von Tonkas Schwangerschaft in Robert Musils Erzählung Tonka und das Geheimnis von Blaubarts Kammer in Charles Perraults Märchen Blaubart (La barbe bleue) sind Elemente, die beide Werke verbinden und die Suche nach Blaubart aus Perraults Text in Musils Text initiieren. Man kann Blaubart in Tonka finden, die auch zu einem seiner Frauen wird, aber vor allem hat sie Merkmale, die aus ihr die Mutter von Blaubart machen. Auf diese Weise erweitert Musil die Biografie von Blaubart, dessen Existenz eine starke Ähnlichkeit mit der Existenz von Christus aufweist – umso mehr, als das Leben von Tonka in der Welt der Bibel tief verwurzelt ist und das Leben der Gottesmutter widerspiegelt: Wenn der Sohn von Maria in ihrem Schoß infolge der Jungfräulichen Empfängnis erscheint, kommt der Sohn der sterbenden Tonka infolge der „jungfräulichen“ Geburt auf die Welt.

Biographical interviewing is used not only in research but also in clinical work such as social work practice. However, as social work settings differ from research settings, the ways of doing, analyzing, and using biographical interviews will differ. The differences arise from the reasons for and the purposes of the interview, the institutional context, the relationship between interviewer and interviewee, interviewees’ capacity for storytelling and reflective work, time limits, the structure of the biographical interview, and follow-up interviewing. In social work, interviewees are in a more vulnerable position than in research, and there is a stronger power imbalance. The service users’ expectations are essential for the work, and it is important that the users articulate their expectations because the purpose of social work is to change and improve the life situation of service users. This asks for ethical considerations that are partly different from those necessary in research. The biographical interview with Natalia is here analyzed using the strengths perspective as the social work theoretical framework. The analysis shows that in her present life Natalia has many strengths and resources, which, in a social work situation, could be mobilized to support her in getting more control over her life. Her perceived strengths are: her capacity for storytelling and reflection; her emotional and cognitive capacities; her willpower; and her capacity for enjoying her present life and planning for her future. Resources identified are: her significant others; her economic situation; her satisfying job situation; her capacity to have dreams for the future; and her religion. Implications for social work, both in the past and in the present, are discussed.

The article aims to present the formal, narrative and structural duality characteristic of Tom Stoppard’s dramaturgy in relation to his biographical experience of changing his identity from Czech to British and being exposed to Central European, Asian and Indian cultures. In the second part of the paper, his work is interpreted in the context of its potential links to Czech culture; the thesis is based on information provided by Stoppard himself, facts about the reception of Czech theatre in the West and the contents of the British playwright’s works with their important references to Czech culture.

Turar Ryskulov: the Career of a Kazakh Revolutionary Leader during the Construction of the New Soviet State, 1917-1926This article is about the biography of a young Kazakh born in the last decade of the 19th century, Turar Ryskulov (1894-1938), who was an essential actor of the revolutionary period in Russian Turkestan. The approach of this brief biography will follow the line of a definition of the national and the nation. The postulate is that the identity is tackled through a political understanding and that it is chosen among multiple pre-existing or invented designations. National identity is a moving construction, favoring one of the possible designations depending on the needs of a group in the struggle for power. Ryskulov began his political activity with the idea of a common Kirghiz interest, then went through the Muslim and Turkic designations. Finally, he had to submit to a soviet Kazakh one. Against the Russian colonial heritage, Ryskulov’s political project was to offer a real place for his Turkestani compatriot in the new soviet regime. He thought it through a unified Turkestan beyond Kazakh, Uzbek, Turkmen or Tajik designations.Turar Ryskulov: kariera kazachskiego przywódcy rewolucyjnego w epoce tworzenia nowego państwa radzieckiego, 1917-1926Artykuł dotyczy biografii młodego Kazacha urodzonego w ostatniej dekadzie XIX wieku, Turara Ryskulova (1894-1938); Ryskulov był kluczowym aktorem okresu rewolucyjnego w radzieckim Turkiestanie. Jego krótka biografia będzie się koncentrować wokół definicji narodu oraz tożsamości narodowej. W myśl przesłanki wyjściowej tożsamość kształtuje się zgodnie z interpretacją polityczną i jest wynikiem wyboru spośród wielu uprzednich lub wymyślonych kategorii. Tożsamość narodowa to konstrukcja płynna, skłaniająca się do jednej pośród możliwych kategorii w zależności od potrzeb grupy walczącej o władzę. Ryskulov w początkach kariery politycznej głosił ideę wspólnych interesów Kirgizów, następnie przychylał się do identyfikacji muzułmańskiej i turkmeńskiej. W końcu musiał się podporządkować radzieckiej tożsamości kazachskiej. W opozycji do spadku po rosyjskim kolonializmie projekt polityczny Ryskulova dążył do znalezienia rzeczywistej roli dla jego turkiestańskich rodaków w nowym, radzieckim reżimie. Dostrzegał ją w zjednoczonym Turkiestanie, ponad określeniami takimi jak Kazach, Uzbek, Turkmen czy Tadżyk.

Artykuł jest związany z nurtem badań biograficznych, które przeżywają w ostatnim czasie swoisty renesans. Refleksje podjęte w tekście związane są z fenomenem ludzkiej pamięci, gdzie autorka tekstu wyznaczyła dwa znaczące obszary – przestrzenie, które metaforycznie określiła jako ogrody pamięci i zarośla niepamięci. Autorka podjęła próbę ukazania motywów, pobudek mobilizujących człowieka, do tego by prowadzić autobiograficzne zapiski, relacje ze swojego życia, czy też spisywać zachowane w swej pamięci wspomnienia. Swoje rozważania autorka przedstawiła w oparciu o fragmenty narracji autorów opublikowanych materiałów o charakterze autobiograficznym, czyli dzienników, pamiętników bądź wspomnień czy listów. Fragmenty te w sugestywny sposób ukazują, iż motywacja związana z podjęciem wysiłku spisywania swoich refleksji lub wspomnień bardzo często związana jest z chęcią i potrzebą, by ocalić od zapomnienia przeżycia i zdarzenia, których doświadczamy. Niejednokrotnie ze swoistego rodzaju poczuciem obowiązku, wręcz nakazem wewnętrznym, który nie sposób zlekceważyć. Kolejne wymienione przez autorkę motywy to m.in.: przełomowe wydarzenie w naszym życiu (które być może ukazują wagę i znaczenie wspomnień); potrzeba zaznania ukojenia i oczyszczenia (tzw. katharsis); potrzeba zrozumienia i oswojenia otaczającej rzeczywistości; potrzeba podzielenia się swoim cierpieniem i bólem z innymi; chęć wskrzeszenia motywacji do życia lub odbycia podróży ku samopoznaniu bądź też potrzeba ucieczki od tego, co nas otacza, czego nie rozumiemy.
The article relates to biographical studies, which have recently seen a veritable revival. The reflections in this are related to the phenomenon of human memory, within which the author has described two areas – spaces, which she metaphorically describes as the garden of remembrance and the shrubs of nonexistence. The author makes an attempt at showing the motives, the reason mobilising a person to write autobiographical texts, relations of their life or writing down their memories. The author bases her reflections on pieces of narration from authors of published materials of an autobiographical nature, such as journals, diaries, memoirs or letters. The fragments in question demonstrate that the motivation for making the effort of writing down one's reflections and memories is very often the will and need to preserve experiences. Quite often there is a sort of obligation, an internal imperative, which is difficult to ignore. Further motives enumerated by the author are, among others: a groundbreaking occurence in our lives (which shows us the importance of memories); a need for cleansing and consolation (the so-called katharsis); a need to understand and tame reality; a willingness to share suffering and pain with others; a will to revive a motivation to live and to make a trip towards knowledge of the self, or a need to escape what surrounds us and we do not understand.

This paper proposes that the biographical or narrative interview is an important method in exploring the relationship of media consumption to identity formation. The paper takes issue with those theorists who place media consumption at the centre of identity formation processes. Rather, in line with the work of British social theorist John Tomlinson, the paper argues the need to see the relationship between media and culture, in the process of identity formation, as an interplay of mediations between cultureas-lived-experienced and culture-as-representation. On the one hand we have the media, representing the dominant representational aspect of modern culture while on the other we have the lived experience of culture which includes the discursive interaction of families and friends and the ‘material-existential’ experiences of routine life. Our media consumption choices and the meanings we take from the media are shaped by these lived cultural experiences while the media we consume also impacts on how we make sense of these experiences. The paper argues that the narrative or biographical interview is a useful way to explore this interplay of mediations in the process of identity formation.

The paper presents an attempt to analyze the interview with Natalia within the framework of sociology of poverty and from a social exclusion perspective. The information about the origins of Natalia’s interview is delineated. In the main part of the text, the author refers to the concept of the badge of ability, described by Richard Sennett and Jonathan Cobb, as a tool of social categorizing and valuing and introduces the corresponding notion of the badge of inability, ascribed to the unprivileged group members. Furthermore, the influence of both kinds of badges on the situation of Natalia’s family of origin, on her life course, and self-description are indicated with some remarks on the narrator’s biographical and identity work. The last part of the paper presents the narrator’s understanding of the world of poverty and social exclusion, its mechanisms, and conditionings.

Opis:
Wśród wielu opublikowanych badań, społecznych diagnoz i refleksji teoretycznych dotyczących procesu transformacji w Polsce znaleźć można przede wszystkim rozważania dotyczące zmiany ujmowanej z perspektywy makrospołecznej w różnych jej aspektach. Ważnym uzupełnieniem takiego ujęcia badawczego i teoretycznego jest podejście biograficzne ukazujące, jak w doświadczeniu jednostek perspektywa przeszłości, rozumianej umownie/historycznie jako czas sprzed transformacji w 1989 roku, łączy się z perspektywą współczesności, czyli czasu przemian. Pokazanie transformacji przez pryzmat doświadczeń biograficznych, czyli aktorów społecznych, którzy jednocześnie stali się podmiotami, jak i przedmiotami owej zmiany, to jest współtworzyli proces przemian, jednocześnie mu podlegając, daje możliwość wielowymiarowego uchwycenia tego procesu. Artykuł przedstawia zatem korzyści badawczo-teoretyczne perspektywy biograficznej, zawiera krótki komentarz metodologiczny oraz przedstawia jeden z aktualnie realizowanych projektów poświęconych biograficznemu doświadczeniu transformacji.
The majority of empirical researches, diagnoses, and theoretical analyses regarding Poland’s transformation are constructed from the perspective of macro sociological approach. Biographical research can be treated as an important supplement of this perspective since biographical analysis serves to reconstruct collective processes, to grasp the mutual influence of individual experiences and macro socio-cultural processes of collective change and transition. The article presents main analytical and theoretical advantages of biographical approach in this respect, contains a brief methodological note, as well as characterizes one of the on-going projects based on the biographical experience of transformation.
