Late Baroque Manuscript Supplicant of the Sinner to the Lord Jesus. Eschatological ReflectionsThe scope of observations in this article will be concerned by Supplicant’s Song of the Lord Jesus(inc. "Jesus, my merciful ..."), belonging to the so-called the popular area. This text was found in a handwritten collection dated to 1744, belonging to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Krakow. In this song, we can identify - as a result of eschatological reflections - the idea of contemptus mundi (contempt of the world), originating from the middle ages. Późnobarokowy rękopis Supliki grzesznika do Pana Jezusa. Eschatologiczne refleksjeZakres obserwacji wyznaczy tu należąca do nurtu tzw. popularnego pieśń Suplika grzesznika do Pana Jezusa (inc. „Jezu mój litościwy…”). Tekst odnaleziono w rękopiśmiennym zbiorze datowanym na 1744 rok, należącym do biblioteki karmelitanek bosych w Krakowie. W pieśni – na skutek eschatologicznych refleksji - uobecnia się idea contemptus mundi (pogardy świata), wywodząca się z wieków średnich.

Opis:
The article specifies the role of rationalism in the work of a distinguished Baroque author, Łukasz Opaliński. The source material for the study consists of: Rozmowa Plebana z Ziemianinem (1641), Polonia defensa contra Ioan[nem] Barclaium (1648), Coś nowego (1652), Pauli Naeoceli de officiis libri tres (1659), Poeta nowy (1661–1662).Łukasz Opaliński stated that reason is the most important cognitive faculty of the human being. Reason makes it possible to understand the rules of natural law, which is the source of ethical action among humans, and brings on understanding of the eschatological aim of human life, that is salvation. The possibilities of rational explanation do not, however, encompass the mysteries of religious faith or the basic concepts of natural philosophy, such as the elements, which are the principal components of matter.Rationalism belongs to the principal ideas of Opaliński’s political philosophy. He opted for a rational organization of the state and for rational ways of solving social problems (he underscored the role of common sense, rational dialogue of citizens and rational responsibility for the common good). The political formation that is best suited for rationalization of social life is monarchy. Seeing it as a model government, the author realised that it could not be introduced in the Poland of the 17th century, and consequently, apart from the eulogy of the monarchy, he proposed improvements in gentry democracy, especially in limiting of the “golden freedom”.An important sphere of externalization of Opaliński’s rationalist ideals was his theoretical thought on literature. He critically evaluated some examples of Baroque art of conceit. He underscored the role of rational sources of creativity and rational discipline in structuring a literary work, and his postulates in this field were close to the concepts of classicist criticism.

Opis:
The article analyses the role of Latin as a universal means of communication among intellectuals during the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. The author argues that the main task of Neo-Latin studies in Ukraine is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of literature and the affirmation of the modern concept of the history of Ukrainian culture as an inherently synthetic process. As a result of even a superficial review of the Latin authors of the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and the imagery of their works, we can learn much about the place and role of bourgeoisie and Polish noblemen in Ukrainian society of that time, as well as look with new eyes at the Cossacks, clergy, and peasants, reaching not only to previously unknown information but also, what is valuable to a philologist, to its refined wording. The representatives of a variety of professional circles, political views, and regions made their contribution to the Latin works in different genres during more than five hundred years – that is why the reader can now afford to choose works for every taste.

This article is focused on the criticism of the prophecies presented by Wojciech Bystrzonowski, an encyclopaedist and populariser of science, in his work Informacya matematyczna [Mathematical Information] (1743, 1749). The author discusses prophecies of sorcerers, physiognomy, palmistry, prophetic dreams and astrological predictions. He examines the cases of magical practices combined with religious beliefs, which he regards as dangerous manifestations of superstition. He also demonstrates that fortune-telling cannot be compatible with faith or the fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that for a critical evaluation of such predictions, the Jesuit rules for the discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues addressed in Bystrzonowski’s work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place in late Baroque and early Enlightenment.

The article deals with the issue of the perception of small Polish towns by authors of literary works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Due to the fact that this type of settlements prevailed in the urban landscape of our country, it is interesting whether the authors gave them any attention and, if so, what problems of the towns were raised. The analysis shows that this topic was marginally discussed. Towns in general, even the largest ones, did not enjoy any particular interest of artists. Small towns, however, most often appear as a collective entity. What drew artists’ attention were wooden buildings, which often constitute the towns’ weakness. The authors devote a little more attention to urban craftsmen, having the worst opinion about them. However, these are essentially the views of the nobility, thus show its negative attitude towards towns and townspeople.

The article is a contribution to the exploration of history of Polish musical culture of the Renaissance and the Baroque period. Recognition of elementary forms of social organisation leads to understanding of the prevailing social and economical relations in those times. This article is one of the first in this topic, therefore it starts with very basic issues. A musicians guild existed in Cracow from 16th to 18th century. The article presents its history and organisation on the basis of statutes and municipal documents analysis. Simultaneously, it raises questions about circumstances of its creation and termination, welded duties and repertoire. The author questions the character of discussed association, considering to what extent it was a guild and a confraternity. The aim of the publication is to present to the reader a coherent picture of the guild, which could provide a starting point for further research.

Podczas XIX-wiecznej przebudowy dworu starostów w Podzamczu Chęcińskim usunięto m.in. elementy XVII-wiecznej kamieniarki, wykonanej w lokalnych zakładach kamieniarskich; zostały one rozproszone i w znacznej mierze zniszczone.
During the nineteenth-century reconstruction of the starosts’ manor house in Podzamcze Chęcińskie, among others, elements of the seventeenth-century stonework, made in local stone factories, were removed; they were scattered and largely destroyed. In 2019, during the documentation work at the Dzięki Palace in Wiązownica - Kolonia, the author recognized a marble portal from Podzamcze, which was re-embedded in this romantic building. The paper describes the circumstances in which the object was transferred, which was the result of an agreement between tsarist dignitaries, who were granted some land in the Kingdom of Poland by Tsar Nicholas II. The person, who initiated the takeover and implementation of the marble portal with the Gryf coat of arms and other stone details, may have been Adam Idźkowski, the alleged designer of the building. In 1997, the devastated Dzięki Palace, abandoned by the administration of the State Forests, was bought by Alexander Pietrov, a descendant of the first owner. In 2005, the palace and park complex were entered into the register of monuments, and in 2008 the renovation began - it has been in progress until today, due to the scale of negligence under state management.

Iconography
Opis:
There is an eighteenth-century painting depicting Allegory of Divine Providence in the convent of the Sisters of the Visitation in Kraków. The iconography is unique. In addition to figures of people and animals abandoning themselves to the care of Divine Providence, it also shows the seven archangels. Although the Catholic Church only recognizes three Archangels (Gabriel, Michael and Raphael), portrayals of seven archangels appeared in European art at the end of sixteenth century and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which also showed figures representing Uriel, Barachiel, Sealtiel and Jehudiel. The Reverend Ignacy Tłuczyński also mentions them in a book—on to the subject of angels and the care which angels and heavenly spirits provide to people—published in Kraków in 1677. It would be impossible to have a full understanding of the message conveyed in the Kraków painting without having knowledge of Polish eighteenth-century religious songs devoted to Divine Providence. The dominant motif—which also appears on other Polish paintings depicting Divine Providence—is the portrayal of people and animals together, to whom Providence is offering various gifts.

In this paper, the author compares aesthetic and stylistic attitude of two composers who worked in Jasna Gora Monastery at the turn of Baroque and Classical eras. The aim of this article is to capture the differences and similarities between the creative output of both artists by comparison of their pro processione pieces, which are a local variant of a church symphony. Collating complexive analysis, the author points characteristic solutions implemented by the composers, which gives rise to denotation their output as baroque or classical. In this way both composers were located on a stylistic timeline – Riepel as a baroque composer who already has implemented some classical elements into his style, and Żebrowski as a representant of galant style with baroque remainders. Outline of the compositional technique was depicted, what in the future can be a starting point for the further researches.

The article concerns the founders of the 18th century retables in the Church of SS. Johns in Torun. The main group of founders came from the clergy connected directly with the church, particularly its parish priest: Seweryn Szczuka and Maciej Aleksander Sołtyk, along with a curate Jan Michał Dutkiewicz. The local Jesuits also contributed to the creation of some of the retables. Some altars in the chapels were founded by religious fraternities: members of the fraternity of skippers paid for the retable of the altar of St. Barbara (after 1724), while members of the German Congregation – the retable of the altar of the Visitation (1755). According to the sources available, the only individual foundation in the 18th century was the altar of Corpus Christi (1753), the creation of which was financed by Torun’s master tailor Andrzej Stachurski. The most recent retable, devoted to the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was created probably in 1761; unfortunately, it is yet to be established who founded it. It was then that the process of replacing the church’s fittings, which had been ongoing for one and a half centuries, finished.

The musical style of Johannes Brahms has long been known as influenced by music of the earlier epochs. His references to techniques, forms and genres of the Renaissance and Baroque music and the elaborate use of the counterpoint were frequently analysed by musicologists. Less often, however, the potential relationship between word and music shaped by the Baroque music rhetoric was studied, something which was somewhat forgotten in the Romanticism. Brahms’ fascination with the past, which led the composer to study the 18th-century musical literature and treatises, enabled him to recognise many interesting aspects of the Baroque music. Like Bach and his contemporaries, Brahms used rhetorical figures in his early sacred works, e.g. Psalm XIII Op. 27.

The article deals with some of the sermons of a Ukrainian writer, preacher, and cultural figure, Ioаnikii Galytovsky, as characteristic Baroque works. The sermon belongs to traditional genres of ancient Ukrainian literature with a set of predominantly medieval style topoi and stereotypes. However, in Galytovsky’s creative practice, the transformation of the genre under the influence of Baroque is noticeable. Belonging to this style has provided not only a change of narrative strategy but above all of stylistic means. Galytovsky creates distinctive allegories, symbols, comparisons, and antitheses which characterise his Baroque style. He resorted to characteristic Baroque amplifications and emblematic images. The writer was able to revive the old form of traditional sermon with the Baroque stylistic technique, as a result of which he managed to dramatise the gospel plots, thus being able to exert the expected impact on recipients with the help of a suggestion.

Malowidła ścienne prezbiterium i nawy wykonał bernardyn, brat Walenty Żebrowski. Pochodzą z późnego baroku. Kaliska polichromia to ostatnie dzieło tego zakonnika. Poza Kaliszem W. The polychrome of the Bernardine church in Kalisz (now the Jesuit church) is rich in Trinitarianthemes. Trinitarian motifs and symbols are presented most abundantly in the nave. The wall paintings of the presbytery and the nave painted by brother Walenty Żebrowski, Bernardine. These paintings are from the late Baroque. The polychrome of Kalisz is the last work of this Bernardine. W. Żebrowski worked not only in Kalisz, but also for the Bernardine churches in Poznań, Kadyny, Wschowa, Skępe, Warta, Ostrołęka, Warszawa and probably in Owińska, Ostrzeszów and maybe in Łęczyca too. He was particularly famous as a landscapist. Although the article shows Trinitarian motifs and symbols on the wall paintings in the Bernardine church in Kalisz, it also shows the artistic activity of W. Żebrowski in the mentioned big and small towns and villages.
