Opis:
It is generally agreed that fine structure and microstructure are usually beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, corresponding processes have a considerable influence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine structure were carried out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were performed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperature sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperature and salinity transects. These domains were found near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Słupsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Słupsk Furrow and in areas of ray concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution of turbulence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope of the Gotland Deep. The rate of turbulent energy dissipation is about ]105cm2/s3. In the area of Hamrarne and Słupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(10m) and 0(100 m). All obtained data testify the high level of turbulent intermittency, so probability of detecting turbulent patches is high.

Opis:
The North American gammaridean amphipod, Gammarus tigrinus, was found in the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea (Neva Estuary) near a new oil terminal. This species may well have been transported to the Neva Estuary with ballast waters from the Finnish area of the Gulf of Finland, where it was recorded recently. In 2005, the mid-summer density of G. tigrinus was 27 indiv. m−2. By 2006 this species had spread 100 km to the east from the first site, colonizing the northern coastal zone of the estuary. Its density reached 99–126 indiv. m−2. Fecund females and juveniles contributed about 50% to the entire population density, which testifies to the successful reproduction and establishment of G. tigrinus in the Neva Estuary. There is a high risk of further expansions of G. tigrinus from the new area to the various lakes of Eastern Europe via inland canal-river systems, which may lead to unforeseeable changes in aquatic communities.

Soil moisture and evaporation are the most important elements of the terrestrial water cycle. In situ data from 14 stations with soil moisture observations, 13 stations with pan evaporation and 200 stations with precipitation measurements are used to analyse temporal changes in these elements of the terrestrial water cycle over the Russian part of the Baltic Sea Drainage Basin. It was determined that soil moisture, pan evaporation and visible evaporation have exhibited significant changes during the past 45 years. These changes reflect the non-uniform character of moistening changes over the Russian part of the Baltic Sea region.

Opis:
The use of hydracoustical techniques to classify benthic fauna and flora is one of the important challenges in present marine research. It is crucial to understand the microphytobenthos photosynthesis impact on the backscattering properties of the sea floor in the Baltic Sea, where the techniques are actively developed now. This motivated our study. The data used in the analysis was collected in the multiday laboratory experiment conducted in the frame of the grant of the National Science Centre, Poland (No. N306 773940). In this experiment, during changing light conditions (light/dark photocycles), the hydroacoustical backscattering data was acquired in the aquarium with a sandy bottom. The constant temperature and salinity conditions, typical for the Southern Baltic, were kept, and oxygen content was monitored. In this paper data collected at 280 kHz, was processed. It was studied how the energy of echo and power spectral density of the echo signal, are sensitive to the microphytobenthos photosynthesis.

Opis:
The main 137Cs accumulation zone in the study area was found to be located at depths below the 50-metre isobath, i.e. below the layer of hydrodynamic activity. In coastal waters not influenced by the fresh water discharge from the Curonian Lagoon, 137Cs occurs mostly in soluble form. The particulate 137Cs activity concentration in the marine area affected by Curonian Lagoon water can make up 10% of the total 137Cs activity concentration. The circulation model was developed to assess the distribution of artificial radionuclides in Lithuanian territorial waters. The model was validated on the basis of data acquired during the measurement campaign in the Lithuanian part of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon in the years 1999–2001. The model enables the 137Cs activity concentration to be simulated as a passive admixture (error within c. 15%).

More than 1500 water samples were taken from the Kattegat, the Skagerrak and adjacent waters. The value of the absorption coefficient of yellow substance at 310 nm was found to varyf rom 0.06 to 7.4 m−1 in the open coastal waters, with a mean value of 1.3 m−1. The corresponding wavelength-averaged value (250–450 nm) of the semilogarithmic spectral slope of the coefficient ranges from 0.008 to 0.042 nm−1, and the mean value is 0.023 nm−1. Closer to river discharges, as in the fjords, the values of the slope seem to be more constant at around 0.0175±0.0015 nm−1. In this area the slope must then be known in order to compare absorption at different wavelengths or to model the yellow substance absorption.

The effect of different methodological steps on the analysis of chlorophyll a (chl a) was tested with algae cultures and Baltic Sea water. Selected experiments were tested with ANOVAs for significant differences between treatments. The results of the experiments led to the following recommendations: the sample volume should be low so that filtration takes no longer than 10 min. Extracts rather than filters should be stored if storage of the samples at −20◦C is required. However, quickfreezing in liquid nitrogen is recommended. The extraction efficiency was much better in 96% ethanol than in 90% acetone – extraction in the latter solvent requires the filters to be homogenised. The extraction time has no significant influence within a range of 3 to 24 hours if the recommended 96% ethanol is used.

Opis:
The flows of brackish waters in the upper layer and saline waters in the lower layer meet above the Słupsk Sill, which makes this one of the most significant features of the Baltic Sea, controlling as it does the ventilation of the deep basins in its central region. Earlier high-resolution measurements using towed scanning probes conducted here for more than ten years had revealed the complexity and variability of the water dynamics in this area. Mapping surveys repeated in quick succession are needed to study the water exchange in such an area. A survey of this kind was attempted in October 2003 during the 57th cruise of the r/v ‘Professor Shtokman’. Three surveys were carried out in the areas of the Słupsk Sill, the eastern Bornholm Basin, and the western Słupsk Furrow by means of a scanning probe towed along closely-spaced transects. The water structure around the sill was different each time, despite the rather short time gaps between the surveys. As follows from the data analysis, during the first survey, the saline Bornholm waters flowed over the sill as an axially symmetrical jet and entrained the adjacent freshened cold waters of the intermediate layer. In ten days, this joint flow displaced to the southern flank of the sill and propagated in the Słupsk Furrow along its southern border, with the dense core of saline waters gradually moving over the bottom to the northern border. Concurrently, the contrary flow of the main volume of cold freshened waters, originating from northern areas and leaving the Baltic Sea, was pushed away from the southern wall of the furrow and blocked at a significant distance from the sill. In three days, the blocked waters forced their way through towards its northern flank. Just below these waters, waters of elevated salinity were found above the eastern slope of the sill at the depth of its ridge, while waters of a similar salinity occurred below the depth of the ridge above the western slope of the sill. There were no indications of intensive overflow in the central and southern areas of the sill. Accordingly, the return flow of Bornholm waters across the sill became possible.

Opis:
Próbki wody pobierano w sześciu punktach (trzech w zlewni naturalnej i trzech w zurbanizowanej) podczas pogody bezopadowej i po wystąpieniu epizodu opadowego. Oznaczono stężenia i obliczono ładunki roczne związków biogennych odprowadzanych do Zatoki Gdańskiej.
Flood events, worse condition of surface waters, and pollution of sea waters are associated with the anthropogenic changes in the environment. Increasing pollution and the amount of rainwater – raise the pollution load as a result of increasing the built-up area. The aim of the study was to investigate the pollution load coming from a catchment in Gdansk to the Baltic Sea by stream. The study presents the results of water quality tests in the Oliwa Stream. It is one of the largest rainwater receivers in Gdansk with a catchment area of almost 29 km2. Water samples were collected at six points (three in the natural catchment and three in urbanized catchment). The pollutant concentrations were obtained from the tests On the basis of the results, the loads of biogenic compounds introduced into the Gulf of Gdansk were calculated. The largest load of nitrates (V) and total phosphorus is discharged in the summer and amounts to 4 tons NO3-and almost 2 tons of total phosphorus per year, respectively. Orthophosphates are discharged mainly in autumn, and their annual load is almost 4 tons. The majority of biogenic substances comes from the urbanized catchment; therefore, it is necessary to locate and limit the sources of pollution in this area.

Opis:
This study aimed to assess the concentrations of arsenic (As), chrome (Cr), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni) in the gills of the sea trout (Salmo trutta m. trutta L.) collected in the Baltic Sea (northern region of Poland). The results were then compared to permissible limits to detect whether the metal contamination levels in sea trout from the Baltic sea exceed the values of limits admissible. Frequently consumed sea trout (25 samples) were purchased from local fisherman in January-February 2014, from Ustka (54°34'43''N 16°52'09''E), Pomeranian voivodship, Poland. The element contents in the gills were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Metal contents in fish samples were found 0.00313- 0.02069 mg∙kg-1 for As (the mean value was 0.01294±0.0009 mg∙kg-1), 0.0118-0.02161 mg∙kg-1 for Cr (0.01449±0.0003 mg∙kg-1), 0.01895-0.14216 mg∙kg-1 for Mn (0.04137±0.0046 mg∙kg-1), 0.00664-0.01528 mg∙kg-1 for Ni (0.00811±0.00034 mg∙kg-1). According to these data, the ranking order of the mean concentration of the heavy metals in fish gills was Mn (0.04137 mg∙kg-1) ˃ As (0.01294 mg∙kg-1) ˃ Cr (0.01449 mg∙kg-1) ˃ Ni (0.00811 mg∙kg-1). The mean concentration of arsenic in gill samples (0.01294±0.0009 mg∙kg-1) was much below the permissible limit of USFDA (1993b) and FAO/WHO (1976). The mean Cr content in the gill of sea trout samples was well within the toxic limit of USFDA (1993a). The samples had lower Cr concentration as compared to the limits of 0.200 set by FSANZ (2002) and 0.100 by EUROPA (2004). Our study reported that the accumulation of Mn was exceeding the maximum permissible limit (by 8.27-16.55-fold) according to WHO/EPA standard (0.0025-0.005 mg∙kg-1) (FAO/WHO 1976). The proposed limit of Ni concentrations in marine fish species as recorded by FAO (1983) is about 10 μg/g and 0.5-0.6 μg/g according to WHO Guidelines for drinking water quality (1985). In general, it can be seen that the concentrations of Ni found in gills of the sea trout in this study are still considered as those of uncontaminated fish. In conclusion, the assessment of element contents in the organs of the sea trout appears to be a useful biomarker to evaluate the toxic effects of heavy metal pollution as well as for human consumption.
