Opis:
X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements were applied as experimental methods to investigate the structure and properties of the crystalline-amorphous Al-based composites prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequent high pressure high temperature compaction of the powders. It was possible to obtain bulk, fully dense crystalline-amorphous composites and the applied compaction technique allowed preservation of amorphous structure in the composite. Addition of amorphous $Al_{60}Nb_{40}$ phase to AA6061 alloy resulted in significant increase of hardness of the composite (120 HV), comparing to pure Al alloy compacted at the same conditions (75 HV).

Opis:
Several techniques were used to investigate the chemical and phase composition of four trial batches of nitinol powder produced by calciothermic reduction as well as their morphology and granulometric composition. Almost all powders produced by a similar procedure contained an allowable amount of impurities and were practically free of minor detrimental phases such as Ti₂Ni and Ni₃Ti. The powders under study have gamma or lognormal particle size distributions and spongy particles morphology typical of this production method. The tap density over 3g/cm³ was achieved at least in one case, which gives us an opportunity to successfully produce bulk articles by subsequent treatments such as sintering or hot isostatic pressing.

Opis:
$Al_{73}Cu_{11}Cr_{16}$ alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying of the irradiated by $Ar^{+}$ ions elemental powders. Evolution of alloy structure at ball milling, as well as during the further annealing, was investigated using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that ball milling leads to the Cu dissolution in Al and Cr and to the formation of $Al_{2}Cu$ intermetallic phase. An increase of the milling duration leads to an increase of the $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content in the samples. Ion irradiation of initial elemental powders results in an increase of their interaction rate at milling. In the case of irradiated powders using as initial materials, a content of $Al_{2}Cu$ phase after milling is higher than in the case of using non-irradiated elemental powders. No effect of irradiation of initial elemental powders on the phase transformation at heating was observed. The annealing results in the decomposition of Al- and Cr-based supersaturated solid solutions. An increase in the $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content at heating was observed only in the samples, which were milled for 4 h. In the samples milled for 14 h, nearly no increase in $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content at heating was observed. Heating up to 500-600°C results in the single-phase decagonal quasicrystalline phase formation for all of the studied samples.

Opis:
The aim of the present work is the analysis of microstructure, dielectric permittivity and thermal properties analysis of $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ ceramics obtained by two methods. The studied $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ ceramics were prepared by conventional synthesis and hot uniaxial pressing reaction from the conventional mixture of oxides, viz. $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Bi_2O_3$. The studied material has layered perovskite like structures, first described by Aurivillius in 1949 and Subbaro in 1969. The ceramic $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ is known to contain a series of compounds with the general formula: $Bi_{m+1}Fe_{m-3}Ti_3O_{3m+3}$. The X-ray diffraction methods were used for qualitative phase analysis of studied samples. The morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy method. The thermal properties of the studied materials were measured using the differential thermal analysis at a constant heating rate of 15 K/min under an argon protective atmosphere. Thermal dependence of dielectric permittivity was studied between room temperature and 1137 K.

Opis:
The study presents the results of the influence of high energy milling on the structure of the new Ti-15Mo-5Sn [wt%] alloy for biomedical applications. During testing the powders were milled for the following milling times: 5, 15, 30, and 45 h. The milled powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy methods. Observation of the powder morphology after various stages of milling leads to the conclusion that with the increase of the milling time the size of the powder particles as well as the degree of aggregation change. However, a clear tendency of particles reduction at every stage of the mechanical alloying process is clearly observed. The X-ray diffraction results confirmed the presence of the α and β phases, and molybdenum. It has been found that the reflections from the Sn phase disappeared after five hours of milling, suggesting that the Sn and Ti alloying took place, leading to the creation of a titanium-based solid solution. After 30 and 45 h of mechanical alloying the formation of the β-Ti phase, the final share of which is 46(4) wt%, was observed. Furthermore, it was found that a diffraction line broadening with the increase of the milling time results from reduction of the crystallite size and an increase in the lattice distortion. The maximum level of the reduction of the crystallite size was obtained after 45 h of milling. The maximum degree of the unit cells reduction for all phases present in the powder that was being milled was also observed for this milling time.

Opis:
In the present study the effect of mechanical alloying parameters on phase formation in $Al_{62}Cu_{25.5}Fe_{12.5}$ (at.%) alloy was investigated. Mixtures of Al, Cu and Fe powder with different particles size were ball milled in Fritsch 5 Pulverisette planetary mill using tungsten carbide vials and balls. The milling was performed with the rotation speed 250 and 300 rpm up to 40 h. Stearic acid or hexane were used as process control agent (PCA). The microstructure of the powders prepared with different milling parameters was investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that increase of the rotation speed as well as decrease of particle size of initial Al powder particles accelerates the formation of homogeneous microstructure of the powder. The mixture of icosahedral quasicrystal and β-Al(Cu, Fe) cubic phase has been obtained for the powders milled at 300 rpm up to 20 h. Prolonged milling time results in transformation to single ordered β phase.

Opis:
Mica glass-ceramic was prepared by sintering method from in the $SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO-K_2O-B_2O_3-F_2$ system. The sintering behavior and machinability of a glass-ceramic composition were examined. The starting materials were mixed and milled in an alumina ball mill for 2 h. Then the powders were sieved to obtain grain sizes smaller than 75 μm. For the shaping process, disc samples were prepared by pressing at 100 MPa. The pressed discs were sintered at temperatures in the range from 900 to 1200C for 2 h in an electric furnace using a heating rate of 5°C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and machinability tests for characterization were performed on sintered samples. The results showed that all samples exhibited similar phases formation and good machinability.

Opis:
Mg-Zn-based alloys ZE10 and ZEK100 have been extruded at different speeds varying from 1 m/min to 20 m/min. Specimens taken in the extrusion direction were uniaxially loaded in tension and compression at room temperature. The results are discussed using concurrent acoustic emission monitoring during mechanical testing and the acoustic emission signal analysis that correlates the microstructure and the stress-strain curves to the possible deformation mechanisms. In all tests, the acoustic emission response exhibited a large acoustic emission peak at the beginning of plastic deformation. A small local maximum on the onset of the acoustic emission activity was frequently observed, i.e. at very low stresses. For the alloys with bimodal grain structure tested in compression, an additional acoustic emission peak appeared at larger strains. This peculiar behavior can be explained by interplay of (10-12)-twinning and dislocation slip in samples with various grain size distributions.
