Opis:
Coupled low dimensional structures have potential applications in quantum computing and spintronics. Using molecular beam epitaxy we fabricated three kinds of systems of coupled quantum wells and quantum dots with different energy order: wells at higher energy than dots, resonant structures, and dots at higher energy than wells. By analysis of photoluminescence and reflectivity spectra, we conclude that there is a possibility of effective carrier tunneling between structures, which opens possibility of subsequent testing of spin transfer efficiency.

Photoluminescence measurements on CdTe/ZeTe self-assembled quantum dot samples with different cap thickness values (18-110nm) were performed at 1.8 K at varying excitation levels. The shape of macrophotoluminescence spectra did not altered notably with the excitation power. The spectra exhibited interference fringes related to the total barrier thickness. Simulation of the fringes confirmed the barrier thickness determined during the growth. The minimal amplitude of the fringes was observed for the cap thickness corresponding approximately to a quarter of the emission wavelength in the barrier material. Maximum emission intensity occurred for the largest thickness of the cap, i.e., 110 nm. We attribute this result to the influence of the surface recombination centers.

Opis:
In this paper we review results of studies of two types of spatially graded quantum well structures containing various layers of diluted magnetic semiconductors Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te or Cd$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{y}$Te. The design of the structures has been recently proposed by us and suitable samples have been grown by a modified molecular beam epitaxy method. In the structures of the first type a digital profiling of the composition of the constituent material in the growth direction allowed to produce quantum wells with a specifically required shape of the confining potential (including parabolic, half-parabolic, triangular, and trapezoidal). Such samples were used for (i) determination of the conduction and valence band offsets in MnTe/CdTe and MgTe/CdTe systems, (ii) for the demonstration of an enhanced exciton binding in a parabolic confining potential as well as for (iii) demonstration of the possibility of "spin-splitting engineering" in diluted magnetic semiconductors quantum structures. In the second type of the structures, a precise in-plane profiling of either quantum well width or the barrier width or n-type doping intensity was realized. These structures were subsequently used for studies of the evolution of optical spectra with an increase in the concentration of confined two-dimensional gas of conduction electrons.

Wire patterns (80-1000 nm) of molecular beam epitaxy grown Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se/ZnSe quantum well were fabricated by a CH$\text{}_{4}$/H$\text{}_{2}$ reactive ion etching technique. Photoluminescence emission shows with decreasing lateral size a broadening of line shape and a spectral red shift. Calculations for the change of the band gap due to strain relaxation show that this shift of the photoluminescence emission for narrow Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se/ZnSe structures (lattice mismatch of 1.34%) can be explained by a partial elastic strain relaxation of the biaxially compressively strained Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se quantum well after the patterning process.

CdS nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using starch, amylopectin and maltodextrin, as a capping agent. Optical properties of the final products have been investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy and Raman scattering. The atomic force microscopy gave a particle of an average size of approximately 6 nm. Our research reveals that all prepared sugar-quantum dot aqueous solutions were stable against precipitation during the time of their investigation and kept their stability for several months after it.

The interfaces between nonmagnetic CdTe quantum wells and semimagnetic barriers of Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te were investigated for several well widths by low temperature photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. Specially designed Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te/CdTe/Cd$\text{}_{1-y}$Mg$\text{}_{y}$Te structures enable us to distinguish the quality of the semimagnetic normal and inverted interfaces. The normal interface shows to have a better structural quality than the inverted interface.

We present an attempt to control the properties of CdTe/ZnTe self-assembled quantum dots during their formation in the process of molecular beam epitaxy. Namely, the structures were in situ annealed at various temperatures and annealing times after the formation of quantum dots, before the deposition of a capping layer. Depending on the annealing parameters, the dots exhibit different optical properties which were studied by means of spatially resolved photoluminescence. From the analysis of these results, the information about relative changes of the average size and sheet density of quantum dots was extracted.

Oscillations of photoluminescence properties in external magnetic fields are investigated in CdTe modulation doped quantum wells. The oscillatory behaviour of the luminescence intensity, the line width and the g factor is due to many-body effects in the 2-dimensional electron gas. The oscillation of photoluminescence intensity can be easily used as optically detected Shubnikov de Haas effect to determine the electron concentration in quantum wells without contacts.

We present studies of resonant excitation of self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Photoluminescence excitation measurements revealed existence of sharp resonances, common for photoluminescence lines attributed to different quantum dot charge states. We conclude from the ensemble of photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation results that we observe energy transfer in coupled quantum dot pairs.

In this work we present a study of the temperature of the single magnetic atom embedded in a semiconductor quantum dot versus excitation power and magnetic field. This temperature is defined by the thermal distribution of spin states of single Mn ion, and results from its interaction with the neighborhood. This temperature was found to be much higher than the temperature of the thermal bath. Its dependence on the excitation power and magnetic field is discussed.

Opis:
The magnetic state of a single magnetic ion (Mn$\text{}^{2+}$) embedded in an individual quantum dot is optically probed using microspectroscopy. The fine structure of a confined exciton in the exchange field of a single Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ ion (S=5/2) is analyzed in detail. The exciton-Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ exchange interaction shifts the energy of the exciton depending on the Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ spin component and six emission lines are observed at zero magnetic field. The emission spectra of individual quantum dots containing a single magnetic Mn atom differ strongly from dot to dot. The differences are explained by the influence of the system geometry, specifically the in-plane asymmetry of the quantum dot and the position of the Mn atom. Depending on both these parameters, one has different characteristic emission features which either reveal or hide the spin state of the magnetic atom. The observed behavior in both zero field and under magnetic field can be explained quantitatively by the interplay between the exciton-manganese exchange interaction (dependent on the Mn position) and the anisotropic part of the electron-hole exchange interaction (related to the asymmetry of the quantum dot).

In this paper we present Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectra measured on CdTe/ZnTe self assembled quantum dots. The photoluminescence spectrum has shown two main emission peaks, both connected with existing of quantum dots. One presents direct deexcitation to ground state and the other is optical phonon (οmega = 207.3 $cm^{-1}$)-assisted deexcitation. The registered multiphonon emission process depends on temperature. At low temperature phonon spectra shows line at 450 $cm^{-1}$ (TA + 2LO in ZnTe) and 595 $cm^{-1}$ (2LO + TO(Γ) in ZnTe).

We report on the MBE growth and magnetooptical studies of (120)-oriented CdTe/CdMnTe quantum well structures. The quality of structures, as evaluated by the photoluminescence line width, was as good as that of the best structures grown in ⟨100⟩ direction. No spin splitting enhancement, expected theoretically, due to the reduction of the antiferromagnetic interaction between Mn ions in CdTe/CdMnTe digital alloy quantum wells grown along ⟨120⟩ direction was observed.
