Opis:
Hydrogen interaction with vacancies in α-Ti was investigated employing positron lifetime spectroscopy combined with ab initio theoretical modeling of vacancy-hydrogen complexes. Ab initio modeling revealed that multiple hydrogen atoms up to 7 can be trapped at vacancies in the α-Ti lattice. Trapped H atoms are located close to the nearest neighbor tetrahedral sites around the centre of vacancy. Lifetimes of positrons trapped at vacancies associated with various numbers of hydrogen atoms were calculated. Positron lifetime measurement of H-loaded α-Ti samples revealed that phase transition into the hydride phase introduced dislocations. Vacancies were created by H loading as well and agglomerated into small vacancy clusters.

Opis:
In the present work positron annihilation spectroscopy was employed for investigation of hydrogen-induced defects in Pd. Well annealed Pd samples were electrochemically charged with hydrogen and development of defects with increasing hydrogen concentration $x_{H}$ was investigated. At low concentrations (α-phase, $x_{H}$ < 0.017 H/Pd) hydrogen loading introduced vacancies, since absorbed hydrogen segregating at vacancies lowers remarkably the vacancy formation energy. When hydrogen concentration exceeds 0.017 H/Pd, particles of palladium hydride (PdH) are formed. Stress induced by growing PdH particles leads to plastic deformation which generates dislocations and vacancies in the sample.

Opis:
Defect studies of Nb irradiated with 10 MeV electrons were performed in the present work by means of positron annihilation spectroscopy. The lattice defects were characterized by positron lifetime spectroscopy. Moreover, defect depth profiles were studied by slow positron implantation spectroscopy. The experimental investigations were accompanied by first principles theoretical calculations of positron parameters. It was found that irradiation-induced vacancies in Nb specimens are surrounded by H, which causes a shortening of the lifetime of trapped positrons. The influence of a Pd and Cr over-layer on the H concentration in the Nb specimens was examined.

Opis:
Despite the favourable strength and thermal stability, a disadvantage of the Mg-based alloys consists in a low ductility. Recently it has been demonstrated that ultra fine grained metals with grain size around 100 nm can be produced by high pressure torsion. A number of ultra fine grained metals exhibit favourable mechanical properties consisting in a combination of a very high strength and a significant ductility. For this reason, it is highly interesting to examine microstructure and physical properties of ultra fine grained Mg-based light alloys. Following this purpose, microstructure investigations and defect studies of ultra fine grained pure Mg and ultra fine grained Mg-10%Gd alloy prepared by high pressure torsion were performed in the present work using positron annihilation spectroscopy combined with X-ray diffraction, TEM observations, and microhardness measurements. Positrons are trapped at dislocations in Mg and Mg-10%Gd alloy deformed by high pressure torsion. A number of dislocations increases with the radial distance r from the centre to the margin of the sample. No microvoids (small vacancy clusters) were detected. Mg-10%Gd alloy deformed by high pressure torsion exhibits a homogeneous ultra fine grained structure with a grain size around 100 nm and high dislocations density. On the other hand, pure Mg deformed by high pressure torsion exhibits a binomial type of structure which consists of "deformed regions" with ultra fine grained structure and a high dislocation density and dislocation-free "recovered regions" with large grains. It indicates a dynamic recovery of microstructure during high pressure torsion processing.

Opis:
This paper presents a comparison of commercially used German and Russian reactor pressure vessel steels from the positron annihilation spectroscopy point of view, having in mind knowledge obtained also from other techniques from the last decades. The second generation of Russian reactor pressure vessel steels seems to be fully comparable with German steels and their quality allows prolongation of NPP operating lifetime over projected 40 years. The embrittlement of CrMoV steels is very low due to the dynamic recovery of radiation-induced defects at reactor operating temperatures. Positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques can be effectively applied for evaluation of microstructural changes caused by extreme external loads by proton implantation, with aim to simulate irradiation and for the evaluation of the effectiveness of post-irradiation thermal treatments. We used our actual and previous results, collected during last 20 years from measurements of different reactor pressure vessel steels in "as received", irradiated and post-irradiation annealed state and compare them with the aim to contribute to general knowledge based on experimental positron annihilation spectroscopy data.

Plasma ion immersion implantation is a promising technique for nitriding. A case study of the characterization of the plasma ion immersion implantation nitriding of iron alloys is the plasma ion immersion implantation nitriding of pure Fe. A set of Fe samples of 99.98% purity and with different defect structure was plasma ion immersion implantation nitrided at different temperatures. Depth profiling of the samples was achieved using positron annihilation spectroscopy with a slow positron beam and nanoindentation. A correspondence was found between the line shape parameter S and the hardness of the plasma ion immersion implantation treated samples.

Opis:
Shot peening was applied to austenitic stainless steel 1.4541 (EN). The surface treatment was performed at various impact energies E, impact densities j and ball diameters D. This resulted in improved microhardness, which increases monotonically with the increase of E, j and 1/D. However, its changes with E and j achieve saturation at about 400 HV0.1. On the contrary, no saturation is observed in the investigated range for 1/D. In the un-shot peened 1.4541 (EN) steel, the lifetime component of low intensity was found with use of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). It corresponds to positron annihilation from delocalized state of positrons in bulk. In the shot peened samples the bulk component is no longer observed. Instead, two types of defects can be identified: vacancy-like defects coupled with edge dislocations and vacancies or their small clusters (consisting 3÷5 vacancies). The results of PALS and hardness testing do not correspond very well, especially in the case of the samples shot peened with balls of varying diameters. The most probable reason for this are different depth profiles of both methods. It seems that the defects, which are responsible for the increase of static microhardness above 400 HV0.1 are located mostly below the surface layer penetrated by positrons.

Opis:
Scanning tunneling microscopy, positron annihilation and X-ray diffraction were applied for the study of annealing of submicrocrystalline nickel prepared by equal channel angular pressing. Several processes were revealed in the structure of submicrocrystalline nickel on different scale levels during annealing in the range Δ T=(20÷360)°C. A decrease of grain nonequiaxiality and further structure refinement were observed with a temperature increase in the range Δ T=(20÷180)°C. Subgrain growth with maximum =60 nm at 120°C occurred on the lower scale level within the same temperature range. Grain growth and microstress decrease in submicrocrystalline nickel observed at T>180°C indicate the beginning of recrystallization. The main positron trap centers were identified in submicrocrystalline nickel within different temperature ranges. In as-prepared samples positrons are trapped at dislocation-type defects and vacancy clusters that can include up to 5 vacancies. At the annealing temperature Δ T=(20÷180)°C positrons are trapped at low-angle boundaries enriched by impurities. Within the range Δ T=(180÷360)°C the dominant trap is dislocations.

Opis:
Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to investigate the microcapsules composed of n-eicosane (filling material) and polysiloxane polymer (shell) in the range of temperatures 123-333 K. Pure components of microcapsules were also investigated as a base for interpretation of the measurement results. The temperature of phase transitions in microcapsules was determined. It showed the appearance of a rotary phase, which is not present in pure n-eicosane. In the considered material, two types of free volume have been identified. The sizes of free volumes able to accommodate Ps were estimated using standard models. On the basis of the o-Ps intensities, the content of polysiloxane in microcapsules was estimated as about 40%. Internal structure of the microcapsules (morphology) was observed by scanning electron microscopy.
