Opis:
This paper reports the application of poly(azomethinethioamide) (PATA) resin having the pendent chlorobenzylidine ring for the removal of heavy metal ions such as Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions from the aqueous solutions by adsorption technology. Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic models for Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions adsorption were applied by considering the effect of contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature data, respectively. The adsorption influencing parameters for the maximum removal of metal ions were optimized. Adsorption kinetic results followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model based on the correlation coefficient (R2) values and closed approach of experimental and calculated equilibrium adsorption capacity values. The removal mechanism of metal ions by PATA was explained with the Boyd kinetic model, Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model and Shrinking Core Model (SCM). Adsorption equilibrium results followed the Freundlich model based on the R2 values and error functions. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of PATA for Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions removal were found to be 105.4 mg/g and 97.3 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic study showed the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature.

Self-assembly of N6-donor bis(terpyridine) ligand L with transition metal ions: Co(II), Mn(II) and Cd(II) leads to a formation of three kinds of supramolecular complexes. In the electronic absorption and emission spectra of supramolecular complexes additional bands were observed what was ascribed to the coordination of ligand molecules to metal ions. Luminescence properties of these complexes strongly depend on the kind of metal ions and counter ions. The effective blue luminescence was observed in the case of Mn(II) and Cd(II) complexes in which all N-donor atoms of ligand molecules coordinate with the metal center.

Opis:
This work reports the effects of some culture conditions on the production of glucose isomerase by Bacillus licheniformis. The bacterium was selected based on the release of 3.62 mg/mL fructose from the fermentation of glucose. Enzyme was produced using a variety of carbon substrates but the highest enzyme activity was detected in a medium containing 0.5% xylose and 1% glycerol (specific activity = 6.88 U/mg protein). Media containing only xylose or glucose gave lower enzyme productivies (specific activities= 4.60 and 2.35 U/mg protein respectively). The effects of nitrogen substrates on glucose isomerase production showed that yeast extract supported maximum enzyme activity (specific activity = 5.24 U/mg protein). Lowest enzyme activity was observed with sodium trioxonitrate (specific activity = 2.44 U/mg protein). In general, organic nitrogen substrates supported higher enzyme productivity than inorganic nitrogen substrates. Best enzyme activity was observed in the presence of Mg2+ (specific activity = 6.85 U/mg protein) while Hg2+ was inhibitory (specific activity = 1.02 U/mg protein). The optimum pH for best enzyme activity was 6.0 while optimum temperature for enzyme production was 50oC.

Fly ash and slag were examined for the removal processes of Pb(II) ions from water in batch experiments under different conditions of adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH and contact time. The materials are industrial waste generated from the high temperature treatment of sewage sludge by the circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) technology. Physical and chemical properties, as well as adsorption efficiency and calculated maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions were determined using a variety of methods. The kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process is better described by the pseudo-second order equation and it is well fitted to the Freundlich model.

The binary and ternary complex formations of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) (PMVEMA) with copper ions and with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of copper ions in phosphate buffer solution at pH = 7 were examined by the techniques of UV-visible, fluorescence, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy measurements. In the formation of binary complexes of PMVEMA-Cu(II), the addition of copper ions to the solution of PMVEMA in phosphate buffer solution at pH = 7 forms homogeneous solutions when the molar ratio of Cu(II)/MVEMA is 0.5. Then the formations of ternary complexes of PMVEMA-Cu(II)-BSA were examined. Study analysis revealed that the toxicities of polymer-metal and polymer-metal-protein mixture solutions depend on the nature and ratio of components in mixtures.

Utilization of agricultural waste material with approach to enhance the heavy metal remediation properties by carbonizing the biomass at nano size particles has been explored in present investigation from aqueous solutions. In this study the lignocellulosic, nitrogenous agricultural waste biomass Delbergia sissoo pods (DSP) has been tried for sequestering of Cd (II), Pb (II) and Ni (II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were performer for removal of targeted metal ions keeping in consideration the preliminary affecting parameters such as effect of adsorption dose, pH, initial metal ion concentration, stirring speed and contact time. The sorption studies were analyzed by using, Freundlic isotherm and Langmuir isotherm models. The kinetics of the process was evaluated by pseudo pseudo-fi rst order and pseudo second order kinetic models. Studies reveal that the equilibrium was achieved with in 30 min of the contact time at optimized parameters. Analytical studies of biosorbent were done by means of FT-IR, SEM and XRD. Desorption experiments were carried out using HCl solution with a view to regenerate the spent adsorbent and to recover the adsorbed metal ions.

The aim of the present work is to study the efficiency of a biocompatible polymer-based adsorbent for the removal of Pb (II) ions whose devastating effects on people’s health is a matter of great concern from aqueous solution. In this study, ethyl cellulose and gamma-Al2 O<3  nanoparticles/ethyl cellulose electrospun adsorbents were prepared for the batch removal of Pb (II) ions from aqueous solution. Both samples were characterized using contact angle analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption technique, FT-IR and SEM. The Freundlich model (R-square = 0.935 and RMSD (%) = 6.659) and the Dubinin-Radushkevich model (R-square = 0.944 and RMSD (%) = 6.145) were found to be more reliable in predicting the experimental data from the adsorption of Pb (II) ions onto the electrospun gamma-Al2 O<3  nanoparticles/ethyl cellulose than the Langmuir model (R-square = 0.685 and RMSD (%) = 14.61) and also the Temkin model (R-square = 0.695 and RMSD (%) = 14.38).

The polymer membranes containing 18 wt% of cellulose acetate and different amounts of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a cross-linker agent were used in the process of iron and copper ions removal from liquid phase. Depending on the content of PVP (changed from 1 to 4 wt.%) the membrane surfaces were characterised by different hydrophilic character and showed the dominant presence of surface oxygen-containing groups of acidic character. Irrespectively of the concentrations of solvents from which the metal ions had to be removed, the membranes showed better ability to remove Fe3+ ions than Cu2+ ones, and the membrane resistances decreased with increasing content of PVP. After the filtrations of solutions with iron ions the flux recovery ratio took rather high values; this ratio increased with increasing PVP content in the membrane.

Alkyl substituents in position 1 of the imidazole ring distinctly affect the hydrophobic properties of the molecule and strengthen its basicity. Hence, 1-alkylimidazoles have been used as extractants of a number of metal ions. Again, a methyl substituent in position 2 of the imidazole ring raises by an order of magnitude the basicity. At the same time, the substituent impedes the formation of the 2-alkylimidazole complexes with metal ions due to the steric effect. By the substitution of alkyl groups in position 1 or 2 of the imidazole ring it is possible to program the extraction properties of extractants and to control the selectivity of extraction.

By using a new method of gelation a biosorbent containing from 11.3 to 20.3% mas. of alginate has been produced. Investigations have been carried out at a constant temperature of 25°C and the pH values ranging from 3 to 5. The obtained experimental results have been described by the Langmuir equation. It has been found that with the increasing pH of the solution the maximum biosorbent sorption capacity increased.

The multi-variant sorption optimization was achieved by the factorial design approach. 99.91% of Pb(II) ions was removed from aqueous solution. The results predicted by the model were in good agreement with the experimental results (the values of R2 and R2 adj. were found to be 99.89% and 99.95%, respectively). Langmuir and D-R isotherm studies were carried out to fi nd adsorbent's capacities (183.9 š 0.31 mg/g and 184.5 š 0.16 mg/g respectively), sorption free energy 13.17 š 0.16 and RL values in the range of 0.05-0.77, suggested the favorable chemical and/or ion exchange nature of the sorption process. The FT-IR study was carried out for unloaded and Pb(II) ions loaded jamun seed, indicated, Pb(II) ions associated with nitrogen and oxygen of jamun seed containing moieties during the adsorption process. The proposed method was successfully validated and applied for the treatment of Pb(II) ions contaminating drinking water.

We demonstrate here that lignin can be successfully combined with silica to create a multifunctional material with considerable sorption capabilities. Experiments were carried out in which a silica/lignin hybrid was used for the removal of lead(II) ions from water solutions. Adsorption kinetics were also determined and preliminary regeneration tests were performed. The effectiveness of the adsorption process depends on the following parameters: contact time of adsorbent and adsorbate (equilibrium times: 5 min for concentration 25 mg/L, 10 min for 50 and 75 mg/L, 60 min for 100 mg/L), pH (optimal pH = 5) and adsorbent mass. The kinetics of the adsorption of lead(II) ions on the SiO2/lignin biosorbent are best described by a pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherms of lead(II) ions were also determined. The experimental data were found to be in agreement with the Langmuir model, and the maximal sorption capacity of the adsorbent with respect to lead(II) was 89.02 mg/g.

The results of preliminary research on the possibility of removing of chromium(III) and copper(II) ions from micellar solutions in MEUF were described. The effectiveness of metal ions removal in the classical UF and MEUF was compared. It was confirmed that in the classical UF the retention of metal ions is small, independent of the concentration of the feed solution. The cross-flow micellar enhanced ultrafiltration experiments showed the usefulness of this method for the separation of metal ions from micellar solutions. The retention of metal ions in MEUF process is almost total in the case of the solutions of low concentration. However, for more concentrated solutions the retention is much smaller.

This research concentrated on the structural stability of γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3 ) was investigated by a combination of differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry and surface-area measurements. The γ –to– θ and then α phase transitions were observed as an exothermic peak at 1000°C–1400°C in the DTA curves. The role of barium oxide as a modifier to stabilize γ-Al2O3  structure has been investigated. XRD measurements show that after calcination at 1000°C for 2 h, a significant fraction of the pure γ-Al2O3  (BaO-free) transformed to θ-Al2O3  while that the transition phase in alumina samples modified by BaO have been reduced significantly. Barium oxide, eliminate pentacoordinated aluminum ions through coordinative saturation and alter these ions into octahedral cations and effectively suppressed the γ –to– α phase transition in Al2O3 , which concluded as improving the thermal stability and porous properties of the experimental samples.

Five divalent transition metals Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized using 3-hydroxy-4-[N-(2-hydroxynaphthylidene)-amino]-naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (H3L) Schiff base as a ligand derived from the condensation reaction between 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalde-hyde. The synthesized complexes were characterized using microanalytical, conductivity, FTIR, electronic, magnetic, ESR, thermal, and SEM studies. The microanalytical values revealed that the metal-to-ligand stoichiometry is 1:1 with molecular formula [M2+(NaL)(H2O)x].nH2O (where x = 3 for all metal ions except of Zn(II) equal x = 1; n = 4, 10, 7, 4, and 6 for Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II), respectively). The molar conductivity result indicates that all these complexes are neutral in nature with non-electrolytic behavior. Dependently on the magnetic, electronic, and ESR spectral data, octahedral geometry is proposed for all the complexes except to zinc(II) complex is tetrahedral. Thermal assignments of the synthesized complexes indicates the coordinated and lattice water molecules are present in the complexes. SEM micrographs of the synthesized complexes have a different surface morphologies. The antimicrobial activity data show that metal complexes are more potent than the parent ligand.
