Opis:
In Poland, since 1985 when the matura exam in mathematics was no longer compulsory, low-level of math skills and poor learning results have been constantly talked about. The academic community warned that young people were massively avoiding the technical, mathematical fields of study and fields with mathematics as a compulsory subject. We are seeing a constantly decreasing level of mathematical knowledge of first-year students, and sometimes even their ignorance of the elementary issues, basic concepts or an awkwardness in performing calculations. The situation would radically change after the reintroduction of the compulsory matura exam in mathematics in 2010. This article presents the results of the evaluation of the mathematical competence of students (who were obliged to pass the matura exam in mathematics). The evaluation was carried out every year at the beginning of the first year of the economic undergraduate studies during 2012-2014. We have analyzed the level of mathematical competence in the area of knowledge and skills over the subsequent years as well as the knowledge of selected content from the core curriculum of mathematics taught in upper-secondary schools.

PISA – Programme for International
Student Assessment
Opis:
This paper discusses the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment and the results obtained by students of the Wroclaw University of Economics. Special emphasis was placed on mathematics. Polish students obtained much better results in the latest PISA edition in maths, science and reading when compared to previous editions and to the average results calculated for the OECD countries. Despite this fact the scores of Polish students in the Creative Problem Solving test were much worse than the average for the OECD countries. It is worth noting that the Polish education system has been undergoing dynamic changes which are correlated with political changes and with the increase of social need for participating in decision-making in the education of the young generations. Unfortunately, the pressure to achieve good results in exams means that teachers have started to teach test solving instead of problem solving. This was also shown in the edition of the PISA exam. The authors of the article propose to change the structure of the didactic process, especially at universities, in a way that would make it possible to increase the number of exercises and laboratory hours.

Opis:
Using selected assignments from admission tests for the Wrocław University of Economics during 1993-2004 and the results of the examinations in mathematics, the authors show the need to implement the teaching of problems. The paper includes the solutions to problems from admission tests with comments regarding the most typical mistakes made by students. Our findings agree with the results of the PISA 2012 results in Creative Problem Solving, where Polish 15-year-old students scored below the median, ranked 27th among 40 countries, in spite of being ranked 8th in mathematics among 34 OECD countries.

Opis:
Fish are one of the basic food products which is considered as a valuable source of protein. Therefore, the low consumption rate of fish and processed fish products in Poland, which is about 13 kg per person, is alarming. The purpose of this study was to diagnose the factors influencing the consumption of fish and processed fish products by young Poles studying on different faculties and entering their adult age. The study has shown that 40% of medical students have declared fish consumption several times a month, whereas 17% of technology students and 15% of humanities students have declared the same. Students prefer to eat fish in the form of fillet and canned fish. Culinary preferences, health value and the price have been the most common factors taken into account while choosing a particular fish.
