    The article “Understand and Respect the Other: Autonomy and Autism in the Novel for Teenagers and Young Adults” is a comparative reflection of books that focus on the human relationships that are formed around young protagonists trying to find their own way and the true values of life. These are mostly realistic novels / mirror novels in which illness, disabilityor death represent a plot that puts the characters to the test. At crucial moments they are forced to deploy their energy and perseverance, and on that side, they learn to live and be independent. Novels about autism allow to consider new questions concerning identity and otherness, norm and outside the norm. The notion of freedom is viewed differently by the characters who are faced with the dilemma whether the need to care for the sick is a sacrifice or a duty.

    Kateřina Váňová argues that reading narrative literature both contributes to the development of competencies in school-age readers and has a positive influence on a child’s personality in general. In the article’s analytical-interpretative part, she examines the potential of using artistic texts in the process of building emotional maturity in children. She draws attention to the method’s practical application in the process of socialization and of building self-knowledge.

    The article aims at presenting children’s and youth books published in 2013, 2014 and 2015 by the publishing house called ‘Poławiacze Pereł’. The author analyses the content of three short stories: The Zebra by Ifi Ude, Bahar Means Spring by Agnieszka Aysen Kaim and Tales Under the Olive Tree by Aida Amer. The article author presents her considerations on multiculturalism as a subject of Polish education. The students’ comprehension of ‘otherness’ may enable them to respect and accept the differences in race, appearance, religion, behaviour, culture, clothing and preferences.

    Slovenská prekladová literatúra disponuje reprezentatívnym výberom z tvorby chorvátskych autorov literatúry pre deti a mládež počnúc od konca 19. storočia až po súčasnosť (I. Brlićová Mažuranićová, V. Nazor, M. Lovrak, I. Kušan, Lj. Bauer, J. Horvat, H. Hitrec, Đ. Zrakić, J. Cvenić, S. Tomaš, A. Gardaš, Z. Balog). Slovenské preklady diel uvedených autorov sa uverejňovali na Slovensku, ale aj vo Vojvodine, v Srbsku. K najvýznamnejším slovenským prekladateľom, ktorí sa venovali a venujú popri literatúre pre dospelého recipienta aj dielam určeným pre detského čitateľa, patria Zlatko Klátik, Juraj Tušiak, Andrej Vrbacký, Rudo Brtáň, Peter Čačko, Michal Nadubinský, Ján Jankovič a iní. Prekladatelia sa nechávali ovplyvňovať pri výbere chorvátskych autorov pre svoj preklad jednak domácou recepciou autora, ale aj vlastným záujmom o túto literatúru.
    Croatian literature translated into Slovak consists of a relevant selection of Croat authors for kids and youth dating from the 19th century to the present, such as I. Brlićová ‑Mažuranićová, V. Nazor, M. Lovrak, I. Kušan, Lj. Bauer, J. Horvat, H. Hitrec, Đ. Zrakić, J. Cvenić, S. Tomaš, A. Gardaš, Z. Balog. Slovak translations are published in Slovakia, but also in the Serbian Vojvo‑ dina. The most significant translators focusing on the translation of juvenile literature are Zlatko Klátik, Juraj Tušiak, Andrej Vrbacký, Rudo Brtáň, Peter Čačko, Michal Nadubinský, Ján Jankovič and others. Translators were influenced in their selection of Croatian authors by their reputation but also by the translators‘ personal interest in the literature.

    Celem artykułu jest opis zjawiska książki użytkowej dla dzieci i młodzieży w drugiej połowie XIX w. Zasób ustalono na podstawie Bibliografii polskiej XIX stulecia Karola Estreichera. Analizie poddano dynamikę rozwoju produkcji wydawniczej tego typu publikacji na przestrzeni 50 lat, charakteryzując zarówno całość zjawiska, jak i przemiany rozwoju poszczególnych gatunków piśmienniczo-wydawniczych. Dokonano szczegółowego przeglądu 25 edycji reprezentujących 3 grupy najbardziej popularnych gatunków, takich jak: gry i zabawy, nauki obyczajności, czytania domowe. Zwrócono uwagę na elementy typowe, powtarzalne, jak i niekonwencjonalne w swej formie i treści. Ustalono, jakie funkcje pełnił dany gatunek, w jakiej formie był wydany i jaki przekaz niósł ze sobą.
    The purpose of this article is to describe the phenomenon of utility books for children and youth in the second half of the 19th century, based on Bibliografia polska XIX stulecia by Karol Estreicher. Twenty five tomes were reviewed, with the relevant materials divided into three sections: “games and plays”, “teaching good behaviour”, “home readings”. Each section was further divided typologically, allowing for a thorough analysis of editions and determining elements that were typical, repeatable or unconventional in form and content. The kind of function the genre fulfilled was determined, along with the form in which it was published and the ideas it conveyed. The dynamics of publishing production development of these publications over the relevant 50 years was analysed, covering both the phenomenon as a whole and individual genres. Statistical problems of publishers and printing offices and the changes in format and artwork were also presented.

    Artykuł jest próbą ukazania sytuacji literatury dla dzieci i młodzieży w pierwszym okresie po zakończeniu II wojny światowej. Na podstawie materiałów Szczecińskiego Plenum Zarządu Głównego Związku Literatów Polskich, które odbyło się w sierpniu 1951 r., zarysowano poglądy władzy politycznej wobec książek adresowanych do młodzieży. Tendencje te, pomimo pewnych zmian i z różnym nasileniem, kontynuowane były przez cały okres Polski Ludowej.
    The article is an attempt at showing the situation of literature for children and youth during the first years after the conclusion of World War II. Based on the materials from the Szczecin Plenum of the Principal Board of Polish Writers, which was held in August 1951, the views of the political leadership on the literature for youth were outlined. These tendencies, with certain changes and varying intensity, continued throughout the Polish People’s Republic period.
