The paper discusses the connection between Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead and the poetry of William Blake. Blake’s ideology was to show how mankind had come to the end because of its misdeeds, using the animal imagery, which links him to the topic presented by Tokarczuk, criticizing the cruelty of the authorities towards animals. She quoted Blake at the beginning of every chapter and created a character skilled in translating Blake. Since not much of Blake’s oeuvre has been translated in Macedonian, the translator of this novel had to deal with translating Blake too. Consequently, this text also focuses on the translation problems which she had to solve.

Gender theory concerns most areas of woman‘s existence in a society and an artistic text is one of many subject manifestations, which may and is likely to influence public opinions. After the period of literature dominated by heroines fighting for the rights, the woman‑provocateurs came to set free not only their bodies, but also their souls. Apart from the male–female relations (gender theory), Olga Tokarczuk’s short story Najbrzydsza kobieta świata (tr. The Ugliest Woman of World) reveals various aspects of women’s writing, in particular – the aesthetics of ugliness. Within this milieu, the ugliness is locked in two stands: 1. the direct characteristics of the ugliest woman in the world and 2. the shocking element of the suffering aesthetics, namely, the exposure of woman by the others.

The sketch focuses on two novels by Olga Tokarczuk (Flights and The Books of Jacob), seeking to show different ways of using the travel motif. In Tokarczuk’s case, in fact, this is not only about moving in the geographical space, but also about exploring one’s own self. The questions posed by the author of House of Day, House of Night are universal; addressing fundamental aspects, they reveal the 21st century human condition. The writer often uses the motif of time, of the book or of travelling as such, showing literature as a specific language of communication that makes it possible to experience other people’s lives.

The paper discusses selected reactions to the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Olga Tokarczuk. The author focuses on the dispute about the legitimacy and justification of the Swedish Academy’s decision, highlighting the sceptical opinions, in some cases challenging the Academy’s members’ verdict. Referring to a book by James F. English on cultural prizes, the author recalls the role of public controversies as an essential tool of influencing the general public. He also compares the situation of two winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature (Olga Tokarczuk – for 2018, Peter Handke – for 2019), announced on the same day. Concluding, the author seeks to present the most important aspects of the dispute on the position and influence of Tokarczuk’s literary output.

As a foundation and product of grand narratives, norms apply to any and every aspect of individual, communal, and social life. They regulate our behaviors, determine directions in the evolution of arts and philosophies, condition intra- and cross cultural understanding, organize hierarchies. Yet – when transformed into laws – norms become appropriated by dominant discourses and become “truths.” Those in control of language always construe them as “universal” and, as such, “transparent.” The usefulness of norms stems from the fact that they facilitate our orientation in the world. In the long run, however, they are bound to block our imaginative access to alternative ways of living and thinking about reality, thus enslaving our minds in a construction of reality believed to be natural. In a world so determined, dissenting perspectives and pluralities of views threaten to disrupt norms and normativities, along with the order (patriarchal, racist, sexist, ableist, speciesist, etc.) build into them. Benefactors of a normative worldview and average individuals busily trying to fit in police the perimeters of the accepted, disciplining nonconformists, rebels, and nonnormative individualists of every stripe. “Assent - and you are sane,” quipped Emily Dickinson in her well-known poem, “Demur - you’re straightway dangerous - And handled with a Chain -” (209).  Notorious for their inimical attitude to repressive majorities, artists, philosophers, academics, and other “marginal” persons have always challenged deified norms. Opening up liberatory perspectives, they have tried to escape mental captivities and imagine the world otherwise: as a place where difference is cherished and where justice reigns. Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in literature, imagines an alternative reality whose inhabitants, Heterotopians, constantly suspend commonly held beliefs in order to examine their validity. Passive perception, argues Tokarczuk, “has moral significance. It allows evil to take root” (43). Without a periodical suspension of belief in truths so deeply naturalized that they look like Truth Itself, we become perpetrators of the evil glossed over by narratives whose veracity we take for granted.

Opis:
This article discusses Olga Tokarczuk’s presence in Bulgaria, drawing on R. Cudak’s theory of reception while presenting translations, strategies of publication and promotion, literary and critical reflection, and non-literary forms of reception. Widescale, effective, and multi-dimensional promotion, reliable translation (S. Borisova, D. Hamze, H. Simeonova-Mitova, G. Krastev), as well as the openness and interest of readers, have created possibilities for an increase in the popularity of Olga Tokarczuk’s works in Bulgaria within the last two decades. The development in Bulgarian culture of critical and literary thought surrounding Tokarczuk’s works (M. Grigorova) is accompanied by the presence of book translations and other selected texts in leading newspapers and magazines („Literaturen vestnik”, „Panorama”, „Kultura”), constituting a significant platform for the popularization of Polish literature.
Предмет на анализ на статията е приемането на творчеството на Олга Токарчук в България. През призмата на теорията на рецепцията (Р. Цудак) са описани публикувани преводи, представени са преводачи, стратегии за публи-куване и популяризиране, начини на интерпретация. Литературно-критическото размишление (М. Григорова) е важно за приемането на текстовете на Токарчук, тъй като дава възможност за поставяне на произведенията и в широк исторически, литературен и културен контекст. Ефективното и многоизмерно популяризира- не, солидната преводаческа дейност (С. Борисова, Д. Хамзе, Х. Симеонова-Ми- това, Г. Кръстев), отвореността и интересът на читателите отварят възможности за засилено приемане на творчеството на авторката в България през последни-те две десетилетия. Издадените преводни книги и текстове на Токарчук, които се появяват редовно във водещи вестници и списания („Литературен вестник“, „Панорама“, „Култура“), представляват важна платформа за популяризиране на полската литература в България. Споменаха се и извънлитературни форми на присъствието на Токарчук в България, наред с други авторските срещи в София и Пловдив (2014).

Georgi Gospodinow to jeden z najczęściej tłumaczonych pisarzy bułgarskich po 1989 roku. Magda Pytlak wskazuje zmianę polskiej recepcji literatury bułgarskiej poprzez dwa ze wskaźników jego sukcesu - to nagrody literackie i renomowane wydawnictwo, w którym wychodzi „Fizyka smutku” w 2018 r. W artykule przedstawia się recepcję twórczości Georgiego Gospodinowa w Polsce w ujęciu chronologicznym i bierze pod uwagę różne gatunki twórczości Gospodinowa (publikowane w prasie, w antologiach i wydania książkowe), rolę tłumaczy, spotkania autorskie z pisarzem, ich odbicia w prasie. Jednym z elementów jego wizytówki w Polsce jest przyjaźń z Olgą Tokarczuk, komentowana jako pozycja do Literackiej Nagrody Nobla.
Георги Господинов е един от найчесто превежданите български писатели след 1989 г. Рецепцията му в Полша бележи успех, който според неговата преводачка и изследователка Магда Питляк показва промяна в полската рецепция на българската литература. Два от посочените показатели на успеха са литературните награди и реномираното издателство, в което излиза “Физика на тъгата” през 2018 г. Настоящата статия проследява в хронологичен ред развоя на полската рецепция на творчеството на Георги Господинов, като взема под внимание различните видове публикации на творчеството на Господинов (в пресата, в антологии и в книжни издания), ролята на преводачите и интерпретаторите, на срещите с писателя и медийните отражения. Един от елементите в неговата визитна картичка е приятелството с Олга Токарчук, този факт се коментира в контекста на възможността авторът да получи Нобелова награда за литература.
Georgi Gospodinov is one of the most translated Bulgarian writers after 1989. Magda Pytlak points to the change in the reception of Bulgarian literature in Poland using two indicators of his success — literary awards and a renowned publishing house which published The Physics of Sorrow in 2018. The article presents the reception of Georgi Gospodinov’s work in Poland in chronological order and takes into account various genres of Gospodinov’s work (in the press, in anthologies, and as separate books), the role of his translators, the writer’s public appearances and their press reception. One of the elements of his showcase in Poland is his friendship with Olga Tokarczuk, regarded as an aspiration for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Karol Chmel je najproduktívnejším prekladateľom poľskej literatúry na Slovensku po roku 1989. V 90. rokoch a začiatkom nového tisícročia stáli v centre jeho pozornosti poetické generácie Nová vlna a brulion, ktoré boli na Slovensku dovtedy celkom neznáme. Okrem poézie patrí do Chmelovho prekladateľského portfólia aj próza, esej a literárna reportáž. K. Chmel je výlučným prekladateľom diel Olgy Tokarczuk či Andrzeja Sapkowského. V článku je analyzovaný preklad mien slovanských démonov v knižnom cykle Zaklínač od A. Sapkowského.  
After 1989, the most productive translator of Polish literature in Slovakia is Karol Chmel. This article shows the variety of Chmel’s translations. In the 1990’s and early 2000’s he focused on poetic generations “Nowa Fala” (New Wave) and “brulion” which were unknown in Slovakia until his translations were published. Apart from poetry, his translation portfolio includes prose, essays and literary journalism. K. Chmel is the exclusive Slovak translator of Olga Tokarczuk’s and Andrzej Sapkowski’s works. The translation of Slavic demons names in The Witcher by A. Sapkowski is analyzed in this article.
