A Troublesome LegacyThe goal of the present article is a critical reading of the legacy of the French theory, which exerted a powerful impact upon the shape of the discourse of contemporary literary studies in Poland. Insofar as “practising theory,” which has, by and large, replaced “practising literature,” indeed revived the Polish humanities in the 1990s, today the real epistemological potential of the poststructural theoretical instruments seems to be fading. The subsequent “turns,” proclaimed in the milieus of the “new” humanities seem to endorse the intellectual status quo, because they take place within the limits of the same paradigm, to which their purely declarative character testifies. The literary scholarship of/in the future will therefore be the scholarship of retreat.Keywords: French theory, literary scholarship, poststructuralism, theoretical paradigms Co po French Theory? Kłopotliwe dziedzictwo Celem niniejszego artykułu jest krytyczne odczytanie dziedzictwa po French Theory, które miało znaczący wpływ na kształt współczesnego dyskursu literaturoznawczego w Polsce. O ile jednak „uprawianie teorii”, które w dużej mierze zastąpiło „uprawianie literatury” jako takiej, było niezwykle ożywcze dla rozwoju polskiej humanistyki w latach dziewięćdziesiątych, o tyle dzisiaj poststrukturalistyczne narzędzia teoretyczne wytraciły swój realny potencjał epistemologiczny. Ogłaszane w („nowej”) humanistyce zwroty pogłębiają jedynie intelektualne status quo, gdyż dokonują się one w ramach tego samego paradygmatu, o czym najlepiej świadczy ich czysto deklaratywny charakter.     For an abstract in English, scroll downPrzemysław GóreckiAdam Mickiewicz University in PoznańPoland An Aesthetic Reflection on Kappa by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa Abstract: The article is an attempt of reading the modernistic short story of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, a Japanese “father of short story”, in terms of aesthetics. The subject of this analysis is the Polish translation of the work Kappa, also known in Poland under the title In the land of Aquarius, made by Mikołaj Melanowicz. The story shows a phantasmagoric visit to the strange country (peopled by anthropomorphic creatures) and some sober observations of this disturbingly atypical land made by the main character. Due to the multitude of culturally recognizable themes referring to the history of Gulliver, the work bears remarkable signs of anti-utopia. My analysis takes on the themes of the story that are important from the point of view of this branch of philosophy and on its symbolic dimension with its immersion in the tradition of Japanese aesthetics. Basing my interpretation on the critical revision of the basic assumptions of the Japanese aesthetics school and on the close reading of the two surfaces of the work (literal and symbolic), I consider how the text functions in a philosophical way. The article focuses both on the literally aesthetic level of expression (descriptions of the presented world) as well as on the aesthetics of narration and the way of constructing the text. Przedmiotem analizy czynię polski przekład utworu W krainie wodników, znanego w Polsce również pod tytułem Kappy, dokonany przez Mikołaja Melanowicza. Historia opowiada o fantasmagorycznej wizycie w kraju antropomorficznych istot oraz o trzeźwych obserwacjach niepokojąco nietypowej krainy czynionych przez głównego bohatera. Ze względu na mnogość rozpoznawalnych kulturowo wątków nawiązujących do historii o Guliwerze, utwór nosi znamiona antyutopii. Moja analiza podejmuje wątki opowiadania istotne z punktu widzenia tej gałęzi filozofii oraz jego symboliczny wymiar z jego zanurzeniem w tradycji japońskiej estetyki. Opierając swoją interpretację na krytycznej rewizji podstawowych założeń szkoły japońskiej estetyki i bliskim odczytaniu dwu płaszczyzn utworu (literalnej i symbolicznej), przyglądam się sposobowi filozoficznego funkcjonowania tekstu.     The paper deals with interdisciplinarity as a fundamental paradigm of modern research, presenting some of its characteristics as well as problems related to the concept. Special attention is paid to the development of Translation Studies as an autonomous discipline, which formed out of linguistics, literary studies and some other fields of study, and which is today considered of eminently interdisciplinary nature.

    Opis:
    Outlining a historical evolution of the 20th century Russian literary theory associated with the Philological Faculty of the Moscow University and often debating various Western approaches such as post-structuralism or deconstruction, the article attempts to identify the premises of Russian theory by highlighting its analytical preoccupation inspired by such theorists as Mikhail Bakhtin or Valery Tyupa. The analytical approach resulted in theories concerning communication strategies of the literary text, which in turn, resulted in the emergence of various narratologial and neo-rhetorical theories.
    Niniejszy artykuł nakreśla historyczną ewolucję dwudziestowiecznej rosyjskiej teorii literatury, jej związki z Wydziałem Filologicznym Uniwersytetu Moskiewskiego oraz te zachodnie poglądy, takie jak dekonstrukcja czy poststrukturalizm, które często z nimi wchodzą w polemikę. Tym samym, podejmuje on próbę rozpoznania przesłanek jakimi kieruje się teoria rosyjska, wskazując na jej analityczne podwaliny inspirowane dziełami Michaiła Bachtina czy Waleriego Tiupy. Podejście analityczne zaowocowało teoriami komunikacji tekstu literackiego, która zaś doprowadziła do wielu późniejszych teorii narratologicznych i neo-retorycznych.

    U radu je riječ o dvjema književnoteorijskim školama formalističkoga usmjerenja: o poljskoj tzv. integralističkoj školi, glavni predstavnik koje je Manfred Kridl, i o Zagrebačkoj književnoznanstvenoj školi, pripadnici koje su se okupljali oko zagrebačkoga časopisa „Umjetnost riječi”. Glavne postavke obiju škola bit će pregledno navedene s obzirom na njihovo mjesto i važnost u cjelokupnoj djelatnosti pravca te međusobno uspoređene, s naglaskom na razlikama unutar njihovih teorijsko-metodoloških temelja. Članak donosi pregled izvora u kojima su prvotne postavke bile formulirane, komentar njihova odjeka u domaćim sredinama te opis statusa formalističke struje u književnoznanstvenim smjerovima koji su ih nasljedovali.
    The article discusses the two schools of formalistic literary and theoretical orientations: the Polish integralistic school, the principal representative of which is Manfred Kridl, and the Zagreb school of literary studies, the members of which are clustered around the Zagreb magazine „Umjetnost riječi”. The main settings of both schools will be clearly stated with regard to their place and importance in the overall direction and compared with each other, with an emphasis on differences in the theoretical and methodological foundations of both schools. This article presents an overview of sources in which the original settings were formulated, a comment echoed in their local communities and a description of the current status of formalist directions in which they follow.
