Then, two young US officers drew an arbitrary line along the 38th parallel. Developing into a heavily militarized zone only several years later, ironically called the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ), that division has lasted for decades and into the present. Recently, several symbolic acts were performed in the zone and innovative plans were suggested to make the land strip into a peace park as a symbol of ideological reconciliation and ecological paradise. Yet to many Koreans, the zone is still inscribed as a wall permanently bisecting the peninsula not only physically but also culturally.  Through an analysis of Robert Frost’s poem “Mending Wall,” this article contemplates the divisions within South Korean society over the North –South divide as a war over the telling of history. This history, however told, must be understood alongside the sentiment of han, a Korean word loosely defined as frustration, anger, and sadness, something that has been shaped by centuries of suffering from wars, invasions, colonization, injustice, and exploitation. Keywords: Korean Peninsula, Political Divisions, History, War, Demilitarized Zone

Opis:
High phonotactic probabilities are known to exert a facilitative effect on word learning in children and adults in their first language. The present study was designed to investigate the role of phonotactic probabilities when learning a foreign language. Focusing on Austrian and Korean learners of English, we investigated two hypotheses related to phonotactic frequency effects: (1) High-frequency segments have more deeply entrenched phonetic representations, with more automatized pronunciation patterns, rendering phonetic learning of homophonous segments more difficult; (2) High-frequency segments are associated with higher phonetic variability in the first language, which can facilitate phonetic learning in a foreign language. Additionally, the locus of phoneme/ bigram frequency effects was analyzed in relation to left-branching and right-branching syllable structure in German and Korean. We found that proximity to English voice-onset time is correlated with phoneme and bigram frequencies in the first language, but results varied by learner group. Sub-syllabic segmentation of the first language was also shown to be an influential factor. Our study is grounded in research on frequency effects and combines its central premise with phonetic learning in a foreign language. The results show a tight relationship between first language statistical probabilities and phonetic learning in a foreign language.

production of homo-organic plosives in Polish and Korean
Opis:
Article presents the laryngeal contrast of homo¬ organic plosives in Polish and Korean and its acquisition in Polish by Korean students. There are three laryngeal series of stops in Korean: fortis (tense), lenis (lax) and aspirated. All of them are phonologically voiceless, alt-hough the lenis series typically becomes voiced intervocalically. The three¬ way laryngeal contrast among voiceless stops is very unusual and Korean is regarded as the only language which makes use of such distinction. Polish, to obtain the phonological contrast between stops having the same place of articulation, exploits the binary system of presence or ab-sence of laryngeal vibration during the closure stage of stop production. The results of the present study show that so¬ called long prevoicing of Polish voiced stops in word¬ initial position is difficult to acquire by Koreans. Polish word¬ initial voiced stops were produced by some Korean speakers as Korean lenis stops but by the majority of speakers as stops with intermediate VOT between typical values of VOT in L1 and L2. Koreans usually pronounce Polish voiceless stops with aspiration in order to contrast them with Polish voiced stop series which is unfortunately devoiced in word¬ initial position by these speakers.

Opis:
This article refers to comparative studies. It highlights the problems associated with using basic verbs of motion in describing a real situation. This includes iść and chodzić in Polish and 가다 [gada] in Korean. The most common types of sentence used (S[trajectory]V and S[purpose]V) have been identified based upon surveys carried out amongst Polish and Korean language students from various universities in June/July 2015. The conclusions indicate that a more systematic approach can be made for the Polish and Korean verbs of motion and this results in an improved methodology for teaching both languages. Attention is also drawn to the temporal deixis (adverbs) in sentences with the Polish verbs iść/chodzić, as well as to the lack of perlative and locative relations in describing trajectory in sentences with the Korean verb 가다 [gada]. Moreover, the most common lexemes used by Polish and Korean respondents are pointed out which show several differences between the two languages.
