    In this paper, we discuss the notion of Positive Language Education (PLE), which stems from a combination of Positive Education and Language Education. We suggest that there are good reasons for language educators to engage in enhancing 21st century skills alongside the promotion of linguistic skills. One key set of 21st century competences that would have academic and non-academic benefits are those which promote wellbeing. Wellbeing is indeed the foundation for effective learning and a good life more generally. Drawing on ideas from Content and Integrated Language Learning and Positive Education, PLE involves integrating non-linguistic and linguistic aims in sustainable ways which do not compromise the development of either skill set, or overburden educators. We believe that there are strong foundations on which to build a framework of PLE. Firstly, many language teachers already promote many wellbeing competences, in order to facilitate language learning. There is also a growing body of research on Positive Psychology in Second Language Acquisition on which further empirical work with PLE interventions can be developed. Building on the theoretical arguments put forward in this paper, we call for an empirically validated framework of PLE, which can be implemented in diverse cultural and linguistic settings.

    Unlike four decades ago, today-safe in our privilege-we, Poles, are allowed to protest. Irrespective of the brutality of the riot police and despite evident instances of the abuse of justice, the consequences of participation in peaceful demonstrations are incomparably less tragic than it was the case in the early 1980s. And yet it would be impossible not to notice the profundity of the yawning abyss between the palpable reality of desperate acts of self-immolation and the safety of Facebook-based philippics, between the individual tragedies of dying hunger strikers and the “intimate revolts” of those who-having much too much to lose-speak out against the collapse of essential values in the serene sanctuary of their homes. The tragedy of the irony of the self-fashioned righteousness seems to match the irony of the real tragedies: the (post)modern hamartia seems to be well illustrated by the difference between two musical interpretations of Ernest Bryll’s disconcerting protest song “I Still Carry My Poems,” first arranged and performed in the 1980s by Tomek Opoka, and then reinterpreted and reinvented in 2009 by the Banana Boat, whose version was included in an album created by Piotr Bakal in memory of the blind bard. The present reflections, therefore, address the phenomenon of the ironic protest, in which self-made heroes thrive, and tragic protesters become invisible, their humanity transformed into an icon.

    The article discusses the stereotype of road novel in Québec in the 21st century, exemplified by François Blais’s sixth novel entitled Document 1 published in 2012. Blais’s novel appears different from the typical road novels by playing with the genre’s codes in order to create something altogether new. The aim of the article is to shed light on the character development, the representations of place and the journey itself presented in the novel.

    The article discusses Edward Pasewicz’s poetry from the perspective of an organic metaphor, developed by the poet in his latest volumes (Pałacyk Bertolta Brechta [Bertolt Brecht’s Palace] and Och, Mitochondria. The author considers whether Pasewicz’s interest in the reflection on tissues, cells and DNA strands, and the idea of combining them with the issue of poetic coding, may be seen as an attempt at resolving the impasse between mythical and realistic forces of this work, or whether it merely constitutes a supplementation to the earlier proposed strategies of translating life into reality. Juxtaposing Pasewicz’s experiments with biopoetry and seeking in them a chance to transcend the poetics of the author of Dolna Wilda [The Lower Wilda], I come to the conclusion that in this case the organic metaphor serves further exploration of a private mythology; but it turns out to be not very productive for the rethinking of the concept of life and community.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza taktyk stosowanych przez współczesnych autorów mierzących się z tabu powiązanym z przypisywanym im autorytetem pisarza. Podczas gdy różnorakie ujęcia krytyczne zwolniły już osobę pisarza z rozlicznych oczekiwań, w rozumieniu wielu polskich odbiorców wciąż pozostaje on utożsamiany ze swoistym nienaruszalnym zbiorem postaw wynikających z konieczności reprezentowania rangi swego rzemiosła. Autorka bada podejście i refleksję czytelnika niebędącego literaturoznawcą ani osobą ściśle obeznaną z rynkiem literackim, a więc mogącą uznawać pisarza za autorytet, któremu nie wypada być kontrowersyjnym. W artykule postawione zostają pytania o to, w jaki sposób i dlaczego autorzy decydują się posłużyć jednym z najbardziej skutecznych, a zarazem niebezpiecznych narzędzi marketingowych, jakim jest skandal. Refleksja dotyczy dwóch wyjątkowo kontrowersyjnych postaci polskiego rynku literackiego ostatnich dekad: Blanki Lipińskiej i Michała Witkowskiego. Analizie poddano głównie ich wypowiedzi autotematyczne, w których ustosunkowywali się zarówno do swej kontrowersyjnej twórczości, jak i obranej na pewnym etapie prowokacyjnej persony, swoistego image’u. Wiedząc, jak łatwo zostać uznanym przez grono polskich odbiorców za „skandalistę”, pisarze starają się przejąć język skandalu i posłużyć się nim, by podkreślić prometejski lub nowatorski charakter swoich poczynań i zagwarantować powiązanie własnej praktyki pisarskiej i postępowania z bezkompromisowością oraz odwagą. Niejednokrotnie kwestionują też status i rolę pisarza, traktując rezygnację z owego ograniczającego tytułu jako przejaw dojrzałości. Autorka zadaje ponadto pytanie o nieuchronność pewnych zmian i stosunek doń przejawiany przez polskich odbiorców kultury i literatury oraz o miejsce polskiego pisarza w przestrzeni „celebryckiej”. Tekst mieści się w obrębie literaturoznawstwa i krytyki literackiej.
    Katarzyna Hanik’s aim in this article is to analyze the tactics used by contemporary authors confronting taboos related to the authority status of the fiction writer. While various critical approaches have already freed writers from numerous expectations, many Polish readers continue to associate the writer with a particular fixed set of attitudes, rooted in the obligation to represent the social and cultural rank of his or her craft. Hanik asks why some authors decide to use one of the most effective and at the same time dangerous marketing tools, which is that of scandal. She describes the two exceptionally controversial figures of the Polish literary market of recent decades: Blanka Lipińska and Michał Witkowski. She focuses on these two authors’ self-referential statements, in which they have commented on their controversial work and the choice of a provocative persona as their image. Knowing how easy it is to be labelled a “scandalmonger” by Polish audiences, the authors try to intercept the language of scandal and use it to emphasize the Promethean or innovative nature of their actions. In this way their conduct and writing practice can be construed as rebelliousness and courage. They also tend to question the validity of the status and the imposed “role” of the writer as a way of shedding this constricting label and manifesting their maturity as authors. Further, Hanik addresses the issue of the inevitability of certain changes in the publishing market. Finally, she raises the question of whether the Polish writer belongs to the alluring “celebrity” culture. Her considerations are located within the areas of literary studies and literary criticism.
