The contemporary study of careers requires taking into consideration multicontextual changes in the world of work, which make individuals face new challenges. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the numerous transformations taking place in the contemporary reality, including in the world of work, which influence people’s professional career, the significance attributed to it and the success achieved through it. This article presents the results of own research concerning career success as perceived from the perspective of academic students from Poland. Particular attention was paid to two aspects of this issue: its objective and subjective nature, as well as the assessment of own chances for achieving it within one’s career path. The results of the studies prove, that the surveyed youth perceives success in a career in a subjective manner, but that its objective dimension is also important for the academic students, and that the vast majority take a positive attitude towards their own professional future. The resulting empirical material may carry important implications for the educational practice.

The present study focuses the Fried et al. (2007) conceptual framework which examines the impact of job characteristics on employees’ satisfaction and how career stage and career advancement moderates these effects. The sample for the study consists of 250 faculty members teaching in different universities in China. Results revealed that current career stage does not act as a moderator between job characteristics and job satisfaction, but career advancement acts as a moderator between job characteristics and job satisfaction which somewhat contradicts the findings of the original model of Fried et al. (2007).

Employability, understood as a set of achievements – skills, knowledge, personal qualities – that make graduates employable and successful in their profession, is more and more often a subject of research, both in the context of improving the educational offer of universities, as well as examining the quality of life and professional satisfaction of graduates. Employability is differentiated from employment – the state of having a job. In today’s unstable job market where temporary contracts and protean-type careers dominate – equipping graduates with the resources to effectively change or modify their career path is crucial. The paper aims to present the psychometric proprieties of a Polish adaptation of the A. Rothwell and Arnold Self-Perceived Employability Scale. The final version consists of 9 items and has good psychometric properties. The study of the perceived employability of students provides important knowledge regarding the graduates’ competencies, and it is an important factor in modifying the educational offer at universities and planning graduates’ satisfying careers in the contemporary unstable job market.

Career development can be discussed in two primary ways: 1) as a type of formal education and job preparation that a person receives; and 2) as a type of informal learning-related career experiences that a person encounters. This study investigates the effect of learning preparedness on female school administrators’ career development. For the data analysis, this study uses the Structural Equation Modeling statistics. The findings from the analysis support the view that tacit learning from both direct and indirect job experiences has a greater effect on women’s career development than formal learning. The effect of these factors, however, varies according to women’s aspirations for superintendency.

At the time of an economic crisis and its psychological consequences the attitudes and activity of young adults, who are just starting their vocational life, are of great significance. Graduates from colleges and universities are a very important group among them. Their abilities have an impact upon the intellectual potential of the country’s economy, and consequently upon its novelty. The presented research concentrated upon the knowledge of graduates about ongoing changes and tendencies in the labour market, and their ability to communicate their needs in this respect. The study comprised 602 students of the final years of B.A. and M.A. studies, since they are confronted with making a decision concerning their future jobs. Decisions made at that time have a long-lasting influence on the quality of their life. It is therefore worthwhile to acquire better knowledge on the inner motives of their choices.

Within recent years the percentage of students in relation to the total population of young adults has been increasing in Poland. In search of the psychological consequences of this situation a study has been conducted on the relation between the level of activity of students and both the objective and subjective indicators of their effectiveness and the level of autotelism/calculation of the initiated activities. The study in question has been performed among a group of 473 students of the University of Silesia, and the results thereof indicate differences between the non-active, averagely active and above-averagely active students in the scope of grade point averages, the amount of granted scholarships, subjectively perceived attractiveness for colleagues as well as for the potential employer, the level of identity integration and the position in group hierarchy. The theoretical concept for analyses is constituted by the concept of emerging adulthood, the evolutionary approach and the concept of career capital.

The study starts with the introduction of main characters of Hungarian mentor training, then it demonstrates the results of exploratory empirical research and development, which has analysed the mentor image of students taking part in mentor training, started at the University of Szeged in 2011. In the course of the study it was analysed how the students of the mentor teacher course imagine a successful mentor. The images of successful examples as well as students’ expected basic personality traits were also examined. The methods applied in the studies of mentor image were based on the method of quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The main methods were observation, a questionnaire, written reports based on specified aspects, a mind map and documentation of project tasks. The results of the research serve to develop mentor training by the help of deeper exploration of the content of mentoring roles. The research results demonstrate the characteristics of common elements of mentoring roles, the mentors’ and mentees’ interpersonal relationships, the cooperative structure as well as the competence clichés and development indicators.

This paper focuses on the question whether the perceived distance between the low status of the school that is attended by the pupils, the high ambitions of these pupils, and the feasibility of achieving these goals could lead to the total evaporation of any motivation to do well at school. Is educational success of pupils in the lowest level of secondary education hampered by the realization that one’s chances to reach a highly respected social position are very limited? In this article, we, firstly, study how adolescents evaluate people in distinctive social positions and to what extent they are aware of status distinctions. Secondly, what are the expectations and ambitions of youngsters and how do they describe their own characteristics when asked to respond to questions, such as “who are you?” and “where do you locate yourself in society?”. Thirdly, we analyze their views on society, their self-images and career expectations. We want to investigate whether these images and projections differ in correlation with their level and type of education.

Drawing inspiration from the research of C. Timoszyk-Tomczak (2003), who, analyzing the strategies and styles of constructing the future (realistic, authority, coercion, wishful thinking, expectations and carpe diem), drew attention to their diversity, which is a consequence of, among others, the context for whom the „constructor” lives, the multitude of his experiences and the range of possibilities to choose from, it was decided to examine the declarations of primary school youth on the planning strategies they choose. Students were asked to choose 2 descriptions that best explicate their current situation, assuming that young people can use several strategies simultaneously, creating their hybrids to various contexts of youthful functioning and areas under consideration. Students opting for any of the options provided information about their preferred style of action in terms of designing the future and making significant life decisions, also taking into account their temporative aspect. Which of the strategies for constructing the future they lean towards in their career endeavors - may be a determinant of their sense of professional satisfaction and a sense of achieving professional success versus its lack.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie wyników badawczych dociekań prowadzonych wśród uczniów ostatnich klas szkół podstawowych, stojących wobec wyboru ścieżki edukacyjno-zawodowej - koncentrując się na odpowiedziach na pytania o to, jakie strategie/style planowania przyszłości obierają uczniowie, skupiając się na opisie strategii konstruowania przyszłości stosowanych przez młodzież, wskazując także na zmienne różnicujące obierane strategie. Inspiracją stały sie badania C. Timoszyk-Tomczak (2003), która analizując strategie i style konstruowania przyszłości (s. realistyczna, autorytetu, przymusu, życzeniowa, oczekiwania i carpe diem), zwróciła uwagę na ich różnorodność, będącą konsekwencją miedzy innymi kontekstu, w którym żyje „konstruktor”, mnogości jego doświadczeń i wachlarza możliwości do wyboru, rozpoznano deklaracje młodzieży szkół podstawowych w kwestii obieranych przez nią strategii planowania. Respondentów poproszono o wybranie dwóch deskrypcji najlepiej eksplikujących ich sytuację, zakładając, iż młodzież korzysta z kilku strategii jednocześnie, tworząc ich hybrydy - wobec różnorodnych kontekstów funkcjonowania i rozważanych obszarów. Respondenci określili, iż najlepiej opisującą ich aktualny sposób działania jest strategia realistyczna (59,50%) oraz strategia autorytetu (46,40%). Opowiedzenie się przez badanych za którymś z wariantów dostarczyło informacji o preferowanym stylu działania w zakresie projektowania przyszłości i podejmowania znaczących życiowo decyzji, uwzględniając także ich temporyzacyjny aspekt.

In the years since Ukraine’s independence, attention has been paid to defense capability of the country, but reforming the national defense sector has been falling behind current needs. The Ukrainian course towards the European community and NATO membership predetermines the advancement of all spheres of public life, including training of officer personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, its education and career progress. The reform of military education requires introducing new academic programs that permit training modern-type officers - military managers, who can constructively interpret theoretical materials, the experience of domestic and foreign scientists and implement them in their practical activities. Against the backdrop of the reform of military education, one of the most important tasks of higher military education involves not only training highly-qualified specialists but also the conformity of their knowledge with international standards that will allow them to be competitive both at the domestic and international labor markets and be compatible with NATO partners. The introduction of practical management experience as management methodology for the relevant system into military medicine will drive the formation of the requirements for organizing the training of specifically qualified personnel. The training of a manager and leader under the dictatorship (authoritarian) principle is passing into history; there is a need for a military manager as a prototype of an intelligent and wise leader. With the advent and expansion of such a control system as management, the following question has arisen sporadically: what is the difference between management and administration? The objective of management is to increase the profitability of business and production activities, i.e., gaining profit. The objective of administration, in particular, state or public, is to regulate social relations, which would be convenient and beneficial to the use of business and all citizens of the state in their day-to-day operations. Management objectives prescribe the features of management methodology which relies on the guiding principle: public administration adopts methodology and action procedure, which is defined by current legislation, and management adopts methodology and action procedure, which is not prohibited by law. Consequently, military administration is close to public administration in terms of the mentioned methodological principle since it is regulated by statutory acts and the system of orders allowed by the relevant laws in force. Thus, heightened attention to the enhancement of military administration is more important than using the terms “military management” and “military manager” within the system of military administration.

The article deals with the problem of qualification advancement of civil servants in Ukraine. The article reveals the problems connected with qualification advancement of the employees of the state authorities. The article outlines the main directions of formation of the current effective system of professional development of civil servants. It was found that the mechanisms of the system of vocational training, which are used in foreign countries, mainly do not vary from the domestic tools of professional development (e.g., workplace training, on-the-job training (lectures, seminars, workshops, interdepartmental trainings), group training, distance learning), but their application in practice has certain peculiarities. Reform requires a high level of qualification and professional uniformity of the management apparatus, which will enable to provide a professional basis for the constitutional uniformity of the system of power, as well as the transition (vertical, horizontal, interdepartmental, etc.) of public servants. The establishment of systemic and innovative thinking of public servants is considered to be a new challenge of today’s realities. It should be noted that “professionalism of a public servant is intended to ensure the proper performance of duties, stability of public service, the ability to solve complex problems and the ability and readiness to improve their qualification. The main criteria of professionalism of a public servant can include: Availability of high education; competence (knowledge, skills and abilities) in performance of duties; availability of practical work experience; discipline, responsibility; accurate adherence to the law; political neutrality; organizational, managerial skills, initiative, creativity; ability and inclination to work in the service career; social protection, as well as psychological, moral and ethical qualities”. At the same time, the character and nature of performance of duties by public servants require them to have not only basic organizational and managerial skills, competence and initiative in fulfilling the assigned tasks, but also high human qualities: orderliness, self-control, modesty and self-criticism, sense of responsibility for the entrusted task, concern for state and public interests. Professionalism is the main qualitative category of a public servant, which determines the efficiency of work and his career.
У статті розглядається питання підвищення кваліфікації державних службовців в Україні. Визначено проблеми, пов’язані з підвищенням кваліфікації фахівців органів влади. Висвітлено основні напрями формування сучасної ефективної системи професійного розвитку державних службовців. Встановлено, що механізми системи професійного навчання, які використовуються в зарубіжних країнах, переважно не відрізняються від вітчизняних інструментів професійного розвитку (наприклад, навчання на робочому місці, навчання позаробочим місцем (лекції, семінари, ділові ігри, міжвідомчі тренінги), групове навчання, дистанційне навчання), але їх застосування на практиці має певні особливості. Реформування потребує високої кваліфікації та професійної однорідності апарату управління, що дасть змогу забезпечити професійний базис конституційної єдності системи влади, а також виконати перехід (вертикальний, горизонтальний, міжвідомчий тощо) публічних службовців. Терміновою вимогою сучасних реалій вважається утворення системно-інноваційної форми мислення публічних службовців. Варто зазначити, що «професіоналізм публічного службовця покликаний забезпечити якісне виконання посадових обов’язків, стабільність публічної служби, здатність до вирішення складних завдань та можливість і готовність до підвищення своєї кваліфікації. До основних критеріїв професіоналізму публічного службовця можна віднести: наявність вищої освіти; компетентність (знання, уміння та навички) у виконанні посадових обов’язків; наявність практичного досвіду роботи; дисциплінованість, відповідальність; чітке дотримання законодавства; політичну нейтральність; наявність організаторських, управлінських здібностей, ініціативність, творчість; здатність та бажання до просування в службовій кар’єрі; соціальну захищеність, а також його психологічні, моральні та етичні властивості». Водночас характер і зміст виконання посадових обов’язків публічними службовцями потребують від них наявності не лише базових організаційно-управлінських здібностей, компетентності й ініціативності в розв’язанні поставлених завдань, а і високих людських якостей: порядності, вимогливості до себе, скромності й самокритичності, почуття відповідальності за доручену справу, турботи про державні та громадські інтереси. Професіоналізм виступає основною якісною категорією публічного службовця, що визначає результативність роботи і його кар’єру.

The article aims to make a critical reflection, theoretical and practical, on the school and its functioning in the context of shaping the desired competences among graduates that distinguish them on the labour market. It is a strong impression that young people in the Polish classroom system still play the role of passive recipients of educational services rather than independent creators. Thus, there is a clear need to create high-quality bridges between the areas of pedagogical support for students in their educational and professional choices and the labour market and employers’ space in Poland. Education “ever anew” is the one that continually changes, adjusts its forms and contents to the changing socio-economic reality, creates a new quality focused on an individual and demanding recipient. The introduction takes the form of a brief reflection on the current dynamics of educational and professional life and the competences that will be needed in the future. The next section presents selected contexts and the diversity of the conditions of educational spaces in Poland. The summary contains inspiration for selected aspects of the future of education, such as the concept of learning in cyber parks and the use of “creative confidence” in learning.

W ten sposób w dłuższej perspektywie system kształcenia jest niezwykle istotnym narzędziem służącym do ograniczenia skutków marginalizacji Romów i umożliwiającym wzrost ich szans na zaangażowanie społeczne. Systematyczne kroki wspierające kształcenie romskich dzieci oraz ich sukcesy w szkole budzą duże nadzieje, są również przedmiotem wielu wysiłków i pochłaniają znaczące środki finansowe. Artykuł powstał na podstawie projektu grantowego IGA SV60171706020 / 2110 Koncepcja wartości edukacyjnych z perspektywy uczniów z różnych środowisk kulturowych (Uniwersytet Tomasa Baty w Zlínie, Wydział Humanistyczny, Wydział Nauk Pedagogicznych, Republika Czeska). Autorka wykorzystuje częściowo wyniki realizowanego projektu, skupia się nie tylko na przyczynach szkolnych niepowodzeń romskich uczniów i studentów, ale głównie na czynnikach warunkujących pozytywną ścieżkę edukacyjną wyróżnionych grup. Przy wykorzystaniu metody rozmów narracyjnych z Romami z wyższym wykształceniem poszukuje ważnych momentów i specyficznych sytuacji, które przyczyniły się do uzyskania przez nich sukcesów edukacyjnych, ukoronowanych uzyskaniem absolutorium wyższej uczelni. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują, iż aspiracje edukacyjne, jasno określone cele, wysoka pozycja edukacji w systemie wartości jednostki oraz własne możliwości i wysiłek są czynnikami determinującymi sukcesy szkolne romskich uczniów. Istotne są też rola wzorca grupy społecznej, jaką jest inteligencja romska, oraz postawa nauczyciela i jego kompetencje.
Good and successful life of each individual in contemporary society depends greatly on the level of completed education. Many research studies show that deficit of adequate education is one of the main factors of social and above all economic exclusion of the Roma population. Thus, in the long-term perspective, the educational system is the most important instrument that mitigates the negative impact of the marginalization of the Roma people and facilitates elevation of their social status. Systematic measures supporting the education of Roma children and their success in the school go hand in hand with the expectations arising from the great efforts and considerable financial means invested towards this objective. In this study, however, we do not concentrate on defining the causes of the Roma students’ academic failure. On the contrary, we view the issue from the opposite viewpoint, namely, from the perspective of the factors that have a positive influence on their educational trajectory. Using the method of narrative interviews with university-educated Roma students, we tried to identify the important moments and specifics that contributed to the formation of their successful educational careers leading to university graduation. Thus, the resulting findings help us understand the problem issues from a positive angle and emphasize the role of individual determinants for assurance of Roma students’ success, as well as for serving as an example to Roma intelligence in general.
