Opis:
The article interprets the novel Gwiazda Piołun by Władysław Lech Terlecki. Its main character is based on the real life figure of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz – author, painter, philosopher. The author of the article indicates the relationships between the accounts of Witkacy’s death and its fictional version. Terlecki’s story of a painter who escapes from war, only to commit suicide eventually, became a pretext for discussing the events from September 1939 and March 1968.

One More Opinion about Secret Sections in Polish Courts in the 1950s ‘Secret’ courts operating in the 1950s are a part of the infamous history of the Polish judiciary system. Although over half a century has passed since their creation, and Poland has went through a political transformation, such courts have not yet been held fully accountable for the crimes committed as an immediate effect of their decisions. It is worth noting, that the first attempt to hold these units accountable began during the crisis of the PRL in 1956. “The Thaw”, which then settled in various forms of social life, entered the judiciary system as well. Its end, as early as in the following year, had a clear influence on the effect of the post-October settling of scores. None of the ‘secret’ courts’ judges accused in front of a specially formed committee, were held responsible in any form, be it criminal or disciplinary.

This journal article discusses articles about the Catholic Church in Poland that appeared in the daily Polish newspaper Trybuna Ludu [The People’s Tribune] in 1949. This official publication of the Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza) played an important role in spreading propaganda during communist rule in the Polish People’s Republic. During this time, the communist authorities sought to subordinate and neutralize the Church. The year 1949 was particularly important in the history of the relationship between the state and the church because it was then that the communist authorities launched a media offensive against the Catholic Church. While the authorities officially claimed to guarantee religious freedom, they forbid religion from being taught in Polish schools and supported only pro-government “patriot priests.” Specifically, Trybuna Ludu reported lawsuits filed against priests who supported the anti-communist underground. An analysis of these articles demonstrates how the communist party used Trybuna Ludu as a tool to spread propaganda.

Petty offences, fines, People’s Poland, drunk drivers
Opis:
The boards judging petty offences were established in December 1951. They were – from the beginning – entitled to judge traffic petty offences cases (petty offences against the security in traffic). In the first half of the 50’s the Boards were acting in a very simple way, by deciding cases about low-level fines (tickets) or about warnings. These minor punishments were not adequate to the decreasing safety on the roads and to the increasing number of cars. In 1956, Władysław Gomułka became the leader of the Communist Party and it was decided to change the policy in traffic petty offences cases by making the punishments more severe. The police started to give tickets more often and the boards were concentrating on punishing drunk drivers. However, the act against drunk drivers was antiquated and thus not adequate to the new situation. In 1959, the so called Anti-alcohol Act was passed and drunk driver cases were transferred to the courts. The Boards lost their importance in traffic petty offences cases, because the Police were giving tickets from one side and the courts were sentencing drunk drivers from the other side. In the 60’s the phenomenon of „road hooligans” emerged and a new act, called „the Road Code”, was passed. It gave new measures consistent with a stronger policy against traffic petty offences. The Boards played the most important role in this policy. The fines were increased three times, and the Boards could retain the drivers’ licenses for some time. The biggest part of the Boards’ jurisdiction was then concentrated on traffic petty offences, especially these connected with alcohol.

The theme of this paper is Aleksader Fredro’s Maż i żona [Husband and wife] – one of the most valued performances in the works of Bohdan Korzeniewski. The author reconstructs the actual performance based on reviews, director comments and remarks preserved in the prompter’s copy and proves thatsuperimposing these perspectives shows the emancipatory potential of stage play. The author concludes that interpreting Husband and wife in a libertine spirit matches Korzeniewski’s directing strategy which can bedescribed as Wallenrodic.

He examines the production process of individual films from the moment of their making to the moment(s) of their reception. From this point of view the historical film becomes one of the main ideological instruments, serving to legitimize the then sociopolitical regime.

boards judging petty offences, people’s councils, social lay participants.
Opis:
In December 1951 the collective model of judging petty offences in Poland was introdu- ced. The boards judging petty offences, with non-professionals as their members, were situated as branch of local administration. The candidates to these boards were propo- sed by the state’s enterprises and by the local societies, the members were elected by the local administration – so called “rady narodowe” (people’s councils). After the political crisis of 1956 this model was strongly criticized and non-professional members were singled as the most important reason of low level of judgments. In 1958 additional new requirement was introduced: the chairmen of the boards and their deputies had to get the university degree in legal science. The election of new members in the 60’s changed the situation and the professionals partially replaced the “social lay participants” in this kind of administration of justice. The leading positions in the boards were transferred to members of the security apparatus. As a result, the bureaucratic factor was playing the dominant role in the boards judging petty offences in the communist Poland.

This paper presents a discussion of selected issues related to the state and law in the thinking of Sylwester Zawadzki (1921–1999) a lawyer and state activist of the People’s Republic of Poland. The text includes reflections on the sources of his worldview and the course of his academic and professional career, and, most importantly, on the content of selected research and observations, of which this co-founder of the Supreme Administrative Court was the main contributor. The purposes of this paper include showing the sources of S. Zawadzki’s intellectual, scientific, and political inspirations that may have influenced and determined his commitment to the establishment of the administrative court system in the People’s Republic of Poland at the end of 1979 and beginning of 1980. There is no doubt that S. Zawadzki then played one of the key roles in the process of establishing this judicial institution in the political system of the People’s Republic of Poland. By virtue of his position and connections in the Polish United Workers’ Party (PUWP), he played perhaps the decisive role that helped break the resistance of some groups in the government, led by Prime Minister Piotr Jaroszewicz. In this regard, the paper also aims to recall the achievements of this lawyer and provide materials for further research on the biography of S. Zawadzki, as well as his teachers and colleagues. The paper is based on S. Zawadzki’s memoirs, his scholarly and journalistic publications, the publications of his teachers and colleagues, as well as selected archival materials (including those from the Archives of New Records and the Archives of the University of Warsaw).

The main objective of the study is to situate the seeress in a broader cultural context and an attempt to answer the question if the Roman sources on the subject are precise and credible.

This paper is an analysis of the discourse emerging around the novels by Stanisław Brzozowski in Poland between 1945 and 1989. The publishing timeline sets the background for the more important focus on the reception of his work. Three distinct periods are discussed – 1945–1956, when his novels were regarded as an aftermath of the interwar period, and thus banned under the Stalinist regime; 1956–1974, when his work wasfrequently reprinted and became a subject of historical and literary research; finally, 1974–1989, when Brzozowski’s novels came under proper academic scrutiny.
