This article discusses the life, career and work of Aniela Gruszecka. The author attempts to characterize her writing career after 1945, highlighting its successful turns. According to the author the fact that Gruszecka was married to the famous linguist Kazimierz Nitsch may have had an impact on her work. While the criticism addresses mainly the most famous work by this long forgotten writer – Przygoda w nieznanym kraju, the author of the article analyzes two unpublished novels – Wschodnie skrzydło and Geografia serdeczna.

Kurpiewski uses the concept of the politics of history to show the relationship between Polish postwar films and their political context. He examines the production process of individual films from the moment of their making to the moment(s) of their reception. From this point of view the historical film becomes one of the main ideological instruments, serving to legitimize the then sociopolitical regime.

Since its inception the communist forces’ system of military justice had constituted a part of the system of subordinating entire front-line units to the communist rule, and the advancing Sovietisation of the Polish People’s Army. The Soviet communists had their own experience in the fields of enforcing obedience and wide-scale infiltration, including that of the armed forces. Red Army, SMERSH and NKVD officers detached to the PPA and the security apparatus involved, introduced Soviet-inspired police terror and disciplinary tactics in the army, temporarily making use of pre-war symbolism and cynically referring to the tradition of the Second Polish Republic. The judicial practice of courts-martial was aimed at preparing the Polish army and war-weary population to accept the communist ideology, and for clearing the military of those discontented with post-Yalta reality.

The author of the article indicates the relationships between the accounts of Witkacy’s death and its fictional version. Terlecki’s story of a painter who escapes from war, only to commit suicide eventually, became a pretext for discussing the events from September 1939 and March 1968.

Opis:
This journal article discusses articles about the Catholic Church in Poland that appeared in the daily Polish newspaper Trybuna Ludu [The People’s Tribune] in 1949. This official publication of the Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza) played an important role in spreading propaganda during communist rule in the Polish People’s Republic. During this time, the communist authorities sought to subordinate and neutralize the Church. The year 1949 was particularly important in the history of the relationship between the state and the church because it was then that the communist authorities launched a media offensive against the Catholic Church. While the authorities officially claimed to guarantee religious freedom, they forbid religion from being taught in Polish schools and supported only pro-government “patriot priests.” Specifically, Trybuna Ludu reported lawsuits filed against priests who supported the anti-communist underground. An analysis of these articles demonstrates how the communist party used Trybuna Ludu as a tool to spread propaganda.

The theme of this paper is Aleksader Fredro’s Maż i żona [Husband and wife] – one of the most valued performances in the works of Bohdan Korzeniewski. The author reconstructs the actual performance based on reviews, director comments and remarks preserved in the prompter’s copy and proves thatsuperimposing these perspectives shows the emancipatory potential of stage play. The author concludes that interpreting Husband and wife in a libertine spirit matches Korzeniewski’s directing strategy which can bedescribed as Wallenrodic.

Opis:
This paper presents a discussion of selected issues related to the state and law in the thinking of Sylwester Zawadzki (1921–1999) a lawyer and state activist of the People’s Republic of Poland. The text includes reflections on the sources of his worldview and the course of his academic and professional career, and, most importantly, on the content of selected research and observations, of which this co-founder of the Supreme Administrative Court was the main contributor. The purposes of this paper include showing the sources of S. Zawadzki’s intellectual, scientific, and political inspirations that may have influenced and determined his commitment to the establishment of the administrative court system in the People’s Republic of Poland at the end of 1979 and beginning of 1980. There is no doubt that S. Zawadzki then played one of the key roles in the process of establishing this judicial institution in the political system of the People’s Republic of Poland. By virtue of his position and connections in the Polish United Workers’ Party (PUWP), he played perhaps the decisive role that helped break the resistance of some groups in the government, led by Prime Minister Piotr Jaroszewicz. In this regard, the paper also aims to recall the achievements of this lawyer and provide materials for further research on the biography of S. Zawadzki, as well as his teachers and colleagues. The paper is based on S. Zawadzki’s memoirs, his scholarly and journalistic publications, the publications of his teachers and colleagues, as well as selected archival materials (including those from the Archives of New Records and the Archives of the University of Warsaw).

This paper is an analysis of the discourse emerging around the novels by Stanisław Brzozowski in Poland between 1945 and 1989. The publishing timeline sets the background for the more important focus on the reception of his work. Three distinct periods are discussed – 1945–1956, when his novels were regarded as an aftermath of the interwar period, and thus banned under the Stalinist regime; 1956–1974, when his work wasfrequently reprinted and became a subject of historical and literary research; finally, 1974–1989, when Brzozowski’s novels came under proper academic scrutiny.

Tribunal of the State, constitutional responsibility, Polish United Workers’ Party.
Opis:
Institutions of the Tribunal of the State and constitutional responsibility were seen by the communist regime as irrelevant and unnecessary in a socialist system. The Supreme People’s State officers had only held a political responsibility before the Communist Party. Appointment the Tribunal of the State in March 26, 1982 and the introduction constitutional responsibility to the political system had to be regarded as an unexpected move by the communist authorities. The political decision on this issue was taken in the face of tumultuous events of August 1980 and born of the “Solidarity” movement, which was a threat to the hegemonic position of the Polish United Workers’ Party. In a public and inside the party came up a mainstream of the clearing. On each side could be heard voices of dissatisfaction of the way in which the state and the national economy were routed by the Political Bureau and the government. Changes at the highest echelons of power were not sufficient to calm these moods. Society and the masses of party members called for the public trial of those, who were responsibility for bringing the country to the economic crisis. In this way, the Tribunal of the State had become a tool in the hands of the new communists leaders, designed to achieve the political goals.

The article discusses the ways of fictionalizing biography in the midtwentieth century, using as examples two biographies. One is Dziennik pobytu w Rosji Adama Mickiewicza by Leon Gomolicki (published in 1949), which is based on chronologically arranged sources. The second is a young adult fiction book Namiestnik narodu by Tadeusz Łopalewski (published in 1955). In her analysis of the sources, the author of the article points out that Gomolicki’s work depends on Russian sources, unknown to a Polish reader. This announces his future decision to forsake academic writing and undertake experimental prose. Łopalewski’s prose on the other hand, paraphrases and summarizes source materials. He also relies on his own creative experience in radio and concentrates on Mickiewicz’s pronouncements rather than descriptions of his life. In Gomolicki’s work citation becomes a heterogeneous, almost experimental compilation while in Łopalewski’s novel the narration unifies diverse voices.

During the existence of the Polish People’s Republic (1944–1989), the dominant ideology was that of Marxism-Leninism. It wielded strong influence on the official world-view. The ideology aspired to explain, in reality, all phenomena and processes. However, wi- thin a short period of time it became apparent that Marxism-Leninism had its weaknes- ses, for example, developing the sciences was conditional upon their non-interference with the objects of Marxism-Leninism. One such science that fell in this arena was the cybernetics of law. Hence, the purpose of this article is to give a short presentation of ge- neral assumptions and relation between the cybernetics of law and Marxism-Leninism during the period of “real socialism” in the Polish People’s Republic.
