The article reflects on individual differences of foreign language users from the standpoint of polylingual communication in two related lan-guages (intercommunication), on the basis of the work of Paolo Bal-boni on intercomprehension, intercommunication and useful ap-proaches to foreign language learning. The author attempts to elabo-rate a list of individual characteristics which facilitate intercommunica-tion (a conversation in which the participants speak different, but re-lated languages). The discussion relates to features presented by se-lected authors in the field of foreign language teaching, the European documents on language education (CEFR and FREPA) and to psycho-linguistics. The final part describes the characteristics which favour in-tercommunication.

Opis:
Academic discourse has in recent years emphasised the importance of an integrative approach to foreign language learning and teaching in which affective factors are treated equally to cognitive ones. These components are characterised by dynamic interaction where emotions are not viewed as an addition but as an important component of the language learning process that act as a catalyst. The aim of this article is to review theoretical approaches based on the assumption that affective and cognitive processes cannot be perceived as two separate areas of the human psyche, as both jointly shape human actions, including those in language. This view is the starting point of an analysis of the potential use of the affective-cognitive paradigm in preparing for specialist communication. It is assumed that it can become a theoretical framework for empirical research that will allow for a better understanding of the specificity and functioning of individual differences in language communication and allow for a more complete picture of specific factors, taking into account their multidimensional nature, dynamics and embeddedness in the context of specialist communication.

Opis:
Verbal communication for specific purposes during language classes invariably involves the decision making process. Decisions primarily concern specialized content and linguistic expressions. The participants in the communication, i.e. teachers and learners, must there-fore have an appropriate level of language competence and expertise. This specialist knowledge, defined as specific knowledge of a professional area and activities related to it, includes both substantial knowledge of the field, knowledge of terminology and discourse structures. Expertise plays an essential role in every aspect of teaching a foreign language for business purposes, as oral communication skills are developed on the basis of specialist knowledge. Broadening specialist knowledge is hence both means and purpose. Deficiencies in specialist knowledge can be seen in the performance of communication tasks when it hinders the ability to reach an agreement. The aim of this article is to analyse the role of expertise in oral communication for specific purposes in business language classes with reference to the author's own research.

Opis:
This article discusses different approaches to authentic communication, pro-posing a new definition of authentic communication in educational discourse, based on this author’ s application of Sperber and Wilson’s (1986/1995) Relevance Theory to functions of target and native language in the language classroom. According to the proposed definition, authentic communication in the L2 classroom refers to such uses of teachers and students’ communication which provides students both with linguistic data (positive input) and facilitates the learning process by explicitly focusing their attention on linguistic forms (negative input). After outlining some fundamental principles of Relevance Theory, the author exemplifies functions of the target language (English) and the mother tongue (Polish) in authentic communication in educational discourse in three stages of L2 lessons: in explicit grammar teaching, in fluency practice and in real class-room communication. Although it is claimed that the mother tongue should be preserved in monolingual teaching contexts, primarily for identification and affective reasons, excessive use of the native language re-duces the target language to the function of a teaching object and, consequently, makes the educational discourse unauthentic.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to reflect on the problem of language anxiety in the foreign language teaching-learning process. The concept of language anxiety in the online language teaching-learning context is discussed, with particular relation to synchronous communication tools. The context is the learners’ perspective of adult beginners at the university level learning French as a second/subsequent language. The research group included 85 students of the first and second years of French at the University of Silesia in Katowice. To collect the data participants were asked to complete the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), developed by Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope (1986), and to respond to six additional questions, related to the online language teaching-learning context. Results showed that language anxiety is a phenomenon that may accompany the regular online teaching-learning process of a second/subsequent foreign language.

The number of lessons conducted during the project was over 30,000. In addition to school education, the project covered numerous meetings of Polish and German children and youth, workshops for teachers, educational forums for parents and others. The project developed curricula for German as a language of the neighbours at all educational stages and in all types of Polish schools, as well as numerous multimedia teaching materials, such as educational games, worksheets, educational films, etc. This paper describes the project, its theoretical and practical foundations and its results.

As language teachers, we have to pay attention to many things in our work but cognitive aspects of foreign or second language learning cannot provide all the information we need. If we also give attention to the affective domain, this can make our teaching more effective. In this article we will be considering some of the affective factors and exploring how they influence the process of language learning. Special emphasis will be placed on implications for teachers in the classroom.

Globalization of business and use of English in corporations as lingua franca has resulted in growing demand for Business English courses in the workplace. This article tries to present a concise profile of an adult language learner in a broader context of adult education and the implications for the Business English classroom. The claim is made that if we want to provide tailormade courses for employees in companies a thorough analysis of their language needs should be carried out first. Explicitly discussed here are the types of adult learner needs in the business context and the methodology which may be employed in determining them.

The present paper discusses selected terminological problems typical of the field of foreign language teaching and learning. The discussion concentrates on several terms commonly used in various glottodidactic debates, namely: competence, communication, interaction, discourse, authenticity and individual differences. The article attempts to indicate the sources of inconsistencies in the terminology, offers several examples and interpretations of these terms in questions from the relevant literature, and determines potential consequences. The aim of the paper is also to indicate areas of glottodidactic research which may be particularly sensitive to such terminological confusion and to stress the necessity of identifying the theoretical perspective and defining the terms central to the particular research project or discussion.

Foreign language classes at university should enhance not only knowledge of foreign languages but with the use of different methods, should also develop skills of communication strategies, which are very important to compensate for deficits in communication. These strate-gies are indispensable for language learners irrespective of their level of proficiency. The objective of the study described in the present pa-per is to explore the communication strategies used by Polish students at different levels of knowledge of Italian. Data was collected by two types of questionnaires, one including two open-ended questions. The other was based on a Likert-scale method which examined the fre-quency of usage of avoidance strategies, verbal and non verbal strate-gies, as well as the strategy of transfer. Emphasis was placed on the re-lationship between the use of types of communication strategies and students’ level of proficiency. In the final part the author recommends types of lexical exercises which should be practised during classes to help students to develop their communicative skills.

The article presents a study conducted on 27 university students and 5 of their teachers in the Winter semester 2020/21. The study was conducted because of recommended online teaching at Polish universities and almost four decades after the first TED event, when the TED community has become worldwide and the recordings of the events can be accessed online cost-free by anybody. The popularity of TEDs and the need to teach online prompted the author to incorporate it in teaching practice and review research literature from the areas of SLA (Second Language Acquisition), EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching and learning, socio-constructivism and adult learning. Based on this review, a hypothesis was formulated: TED talks support the development of listening, speaking, and interaction skills when used as a supplementary resource in teaching English as a foreign language to university students. Three supplementary questions were formed to test the hypothesis. Data was obtained in an online questionnaire and analysed using the qualitative data analysis framework of Miles and Huberman (1994). The study confirmed the hypothesis. Lessons with TEDs are valued as varied, interesting, inspiring and supporting oral communication skills’ development. Results are discussed, conclusions drawn and further research explored.
