The article is an attempt to familiarise the readers with not only the source, Gustaw Zieliński’s Dzienniki mojego życia (Diaries of My Life), but also with the work on its first edition. Over a period of a few months (when these comments were noted down), the character of the text changed almost completely. One could even say that it transformed from a meticulously maintained personal text into a kind of notepad or sketchbook, which lost its diary-like character and became a sort of record of memories. The significance of this document, the range of themes discussed in it (among others, the literature, the social and cultural life of the first half of the 19th century) are all arguments in favour of taking up a laborious editorial work in order to publish this work. This article describes the stages of this work and discusses the ordering processes that make this source text interesting to a non-specialist reader.

Opis:
The article explores the interactions between the family and the market in the context of the happiness and tensions that exist between these two social institutions. The analysis undertaken here also stresses the importance of culture, understood as the norms, values and beliefs which are important for a wide range of actions and processes within a society, and treats it as a useful perspective for the explanation of complex socio economic phenomena. Firstly, the nature and mutual dependence of these two spheres is characterized in order to highlight that the desired social order cannot function without any of them. In this respect the article also aims to explain the role that the family plays in society and the happiness achieved by its members. At the same time, it is stressed that the proper functioning of society depends largely on the vision of a man that a given society accepts. By doing this, the limitations of the anthropological assumptions of the dominant neoclassical economics are indicated and discussed. Secondly, the article shows how the family dimension of human life – social in its nature – is intrinsically connected with the issue of happiness. It is important to stress this because to a large extent happiness in economics and different happiness indices seem to limit their analyses to subjective individual well-being. Finally, the article states that although market and family are to an extent complementary, the proper socio-cultural hierarchy and policies based on it should stress the priority of the latter. Evidence of different kinds for such a standpoint is subsequently presented. In the end, the categories of ‘social’ and ‘human’ capital and their correlation is engaged to improve understanding of the fact that a well-functioning family is a necessary condition for the development and long-term flourishing of the market.

The aim of the article is to present the cultural model of disability and its consequences for special education. I will start by presenting the origins and essence of the cultural model of disability. Next, I will characterize the four main assumptions underlying this model: 1) disability can be understood differently in different cultures, 2) people perceive disability through the prism of the experiences they have acquired in their culture, 3) the understanding of disability depends on the type of discourse that constitutes its meaning, 4) the commonly unquestionable “efficiency” usually referred to as “normality” should be questioned. In the second part of the article, I will discuss the most important implications of the cultural model of disability for the theory and practice of special education.

Our purpose is to reexamine his attitude to TV culture in the oscillation between Western and Eastern gaze considered in connection to the problems of emptiness and meditation drawn from Zen religious beliefs. In discussing his installations there is special stress to reconstruct his inner-insight into the subject of seeing and watching inscribed in a closed-circuit of the communication network.

Polish feature films from the interwar period are to a great extent a reflection of the reality of that time. This can be seen mainly in the presentation of particular architectural objects and fashion from that time. The films are also a source of knowledge about the problems of the time: the impoverishment of the society, economic crisis, prostitution, etc. These pictures reflect reality, yet they are subject to numerous transformations, as the result of the conventions of the chosen genre.

Identities in the contemporary world are not ready-made but are to a large extent constructed by individuals and groups of individuals in the process of social and cultural life. Practically all aspects of that life – perceived as own physical, mental, and social features – followed by autoreflection on them, as well as contacts with other people, social memory, power, or mass culture, may influence the process in which identity is being created. The paper focuses on separation and characterisation of factors that play a role in identity construction.
We współczesnym świecie tożsamości ludzi nie są gotowe, lecz są w dużym stopniu konstruowane przez jednostki i grupy w procesie życia społeczno-kulturowego. Praktycznie wszystkie przejawy tego życia – postrzeganie własnych cech fizycznych, psychicznych i społecznych wraz z autorefleksją nad nimi, kontakty z innymi ludźmi, pamięć społeczna, władza, kultura masowa – mogą oddziaływać w procesie konstruowania tożsamości. Artykuł poświęcony jest wyodrębnieniu i scharakteryzowaniu tych czynników biorących udział w konstruowaniu tożsamości.

In this paper, I consider whether a theoretically defined concept of underclass can be helpful in social scientific discourse. I analyze, review and categorize the concept of a underclass and I made some suggestions for a use of the concept application in the study of social, psychological and moral consequences of poverty. It begins with a discussion of the continuing and pervasive appeal of structural explanations as the root cause of poverty. Then are also examined cultural theories, which by contrast find explanation for poverty in various elements of culture (ex. cultural traits of poor are thought to be different from those of the rest society). A third, a synthetic review of the urban underclass concept is explored. The article also describes the concept of a „culture of poverty” (taking into account the context of the subculture) and „lower class value stretch” as influential concepts in analyses of contemporary poverty and in explanations of the behavior of the poor.

The definition of doping in the World Anti-Doping Code is an important instrument of international politics. While implications are obvious for the professional athletes participating in Olympic Games, they remain vague for the broader society – the followers of the Olympic struggles. The article is an attempt to indicate the problem faced by society, international institutions and states, trying to pursue an effective anti-doping policy. It presents a comprehensive description of one of the largest doping scandals with the participation of the Russian authorities in 2013–2014 and the results of the author’s research on society’s knowledge of doping in sports. Public awareness of banned substances and methods may turn out to be crucial while assessing the actions of governments and international institutions. Society may have insufficient knowledge about doping and may be unaware of its role in politics on an international scale. An ani-doping policy is a part of state policy, so it impacts the way of benefiting physical culture which is one of the areas creating the public sector.

This paper deals thematically with the emancipation of Romani women in the Slovak Republic, their position in the society, as well as delimitation of their social status and role. Emphasis is put on differences in culture, cultural patterns and behavioral models, differences in the upbringing of children and the position of the Romani woman in the Romani family, compared to the society’s majority. Obstacles to the formation of an independent and emancipated Romani woman are described, for whom the concepts of emancipation and equality of rights are unknown and nearly inconceivable. Emancipation and equality of Romani women is particularly relevant in terms of opportunities for education, employment, position in the society and awareness of one’s rights. The objective is to present educated, successful, independent, and equal Romani women, enlightenment amongst the Romani population, engagement of Romani women in public and social life, and support them through various projects, etc.

In the article, through a comparative analysis of the discourse related to the description of economic free market processes and discourses related to cultural processes, we are looking for a research perspective that allows to examine the mutual influence of these cultural processes. If we analyze the descriptions of socio-economic changes in countries such as Poland or the Baltic countries, it turns out that their path to increase economic competitiveness is similar. It is associated with market changes but also a cultural change in a broader context. Thus, one can hypothesize: the individual is free in the world of thought, however, in the world of phenomena, freedom does not exist. This hypothesis developed for societies that introduced a free market would be: the individual in the consumer society is free in the world of his thoughts but in the world of market phenomena he is subject to independent processes.
W artykule poprzez analizę porównawczą dyskursu związanego z opisem ekonomicznych procesów wolnorynkowych i dyskursów związanych z procesami kulturowymi szukamy perspektywy badawczej, pozwalającej badać wzajemny wpływ tych procesów kulturowych.

The main intention of this text is to show the interpretative track in the attempt to find the genealogy of expert appraisal. The main thesis expresses Zygmunt Bauman’s view of mutual connection between the weak and light status of identity in consumer culture and the tendency to create cultural practices in order to overcome that weakness, and to strengthen and confirm that status of identity. On the one hand, the main feature of consumer culture and our freedom expressed by consumption determines our identities and is the main reason for „corrosion of identity” (R. Sennett), but on the other hand it demands and generates the necessity of cultural institutions that guarantee its confirmation. Hence, we may find the reason for the so-called „counselling boom” and expansion of expert appraisal in our risk society. The presented text also shows the cultural background for cultural practices in the risk society and consists of the attempt to grasp social instant pedagogies. This phenomenon is analysed here by the role of advertisements and psychological guides as the main cultural practices of instant pedagogy. My intention seeks to bring to account often hidden and obvious practices, and to highlight in a critical manner the tendencies in our social milieu and in the face of „the unbearable lightness of consumption”.

Sensory experience leads to the initiation of a complex process of thinking about the world. The result of this process are the images of what surrounds us. We definethis action as education. Because looking at the world from the perspective of sensual experience is the potential ability of every human being (Hannah Arendt), education becomes a tool enabling the simulation of the existing world and the one that may appear in the future. About who we are and where we are, who we will decide, the quality of the senses. The quality of the senses translates into the value of the cognitive process. The consequence of the quality of the cognitive process is the collection of information and knowledge. This sensual logic inscribes the action that classifiesus people according to predisposition or ava-ilable information that results from the quality of sensual functioning. As Leonardo da Vinci saw it: “Experience, the intermediary between creative nature and the human race, teaches what nature uses among mortals, that before the necessity of necessity one cannot act differently than reason, his teaching works.”

In the present day, culture is a term which due to its complex nature, raises many theoretical and methodological questions. It is being perceived as something described more in plural terms rather than as a whole and a universal pattern, despite the impact made on the debate by the globalisation discourse. Therefore, it is presently an object of study in many academic disciplines. However, the discipline, which shows the most significant interest in the scientific investigation of culture, is anthropology. This paper examines the key issues in the understanding of culture within anthropology and its relation to pedagogy. The latter issue is being raised in order to highlight a relatively new anthropological subdiscipline, i.e. anthropology of education as a research perspective which could deliver certain answers to the problem of cultural diversity, multiculturalism, and multicultural education.

It combined the task of providing material aid to the Poles living there with activities aimed at counteracting their denationalization. The analysis of source materials made it possible to identify those forms of activity which were defined as moral assistance. It played an important role as the first such association, uniting many people in their concern to preserve their national identity and fight against enslavement.
