The study is set up to examine Hausa terms and concepts used over the Nigeria electronic media. Specifically the study analyses the use of Hausa in the eastern Hausa dialect area where we sample Plateau and Adamawa States in Nigeria. Through various instruments of research, the study comes up with various performances of the Hausa Broadcasters in terms of IOVs, IOAs, IOCs, and IOIs. The study identifies that there are various degrees of variations among Hausa Broadcasters in the use of terms and concepts in the electronic media in the non-Hausa dialect area. These variations are observed at different levels i.e. among Hausa Broadcasters in the same electronic media within the same dialect area and across electronic media. These variations occasion various degrees of performances among Hausa Broadcasters in terms of IOAs. The study further identifies various degrees of performances in terms of IOCs, which result in various degrees of performances in terms of IOIs. The performances of the Hausa Broadcasters result in confusions and breakdown of communication as reported by Hausa listeners. These variations and inconsistencies in the use of Hausa terms and concepts over the electronic media are tied up to various factors. The lack of a language monitoring body saddled with the responsibility of supervising Hausa language development in the media may be the cause of such discrepancies in the use of terms of concepts over the electronic media in the non-Hausa dialect area.

The present inquiry is designed to reveal how meaningful components, variously interrelated, eventually result in semantic differences discovered in adjectival synonymous clusters in French and in Polish. The method of conducting this comparative analysis is to match lexical paraphrases of synonymous items in both languages. The data are underpinned by well documented and authentic examples. The concept of cross-language equivalence of selected lexical units is highlighted, thus enabling further developments to be carried out in the fields of foreign language teaching and translation practice. The study of empirical material is complemented with a concise sketch dealing with theoretical aspects of synonymy.

Due to the multifaceted nature of the revitalisation process, its evaluation and monitoring, as well as possible comparisons, are complex and difficult to carry out. Evaluation of the revitalisation process currently poses a challenge for all municipalities. The article aims to compare the revitalisation process in the two Polish cities of Toruń and Bydgoszcz. The analysis was based on two financial perspectives: 2007–2015 and 2016–2023. The authors chose a multi-criteria analysis method based on the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as the main research method. The results show that the Local Revitalisation Programme of the City of Toruń for the years 2007–2015 had the best impact on the revitalisation process. Using the AHP method, we could carry out a multidimensional evaluation of the revitalisation process. Moreover, it allowed us to combine different elements of the evaluation of the revitalisation process and transform them into one synthetic result, ranking each programme in a hierarchy. At the methodological level, the article presents a new approach to conduct research in socio-economic geography, using the tool of multi-criteria analysis derived from the disciplines of economics and management sciences. Until now, the AHP method has not been used in the analysis of the revitalisation process, which confirms the innovative character of the conducted research.

The main subject of the article is a deliberation on a method (or methods) used in comparing legal systems. However, discussing the method requires first to make a reference to the jurisprudence views on the understanding of the term comparative law. The scholars’ views are divided into two groups. While by some scholars the term comparative law is considered to be a scientific method, other scholars accept it as a separate branch of law. In this article a thorough analysis of the arguments of both groups of scholars is presented. Regarding the terminological imprecision concerning ‘comparative law’, a new term: a ‘science of comparison of legal systems’ is proposed. This notion describes more precisely and more thoroughly the specific nature of a comparison of legal systems. Further in the article, the main features of a comparative method as a research tool are discussed. The important ones include a selection of objects to be compared and an indication of the adequate legal reference systems. Those features have to be taken into account by the scholars using a comparative method in research.
Przedmiotem artykułu są rozważania nad metodą (bądź metodami) nauki o porównywaniu systemów prawnych. Aby jednak pisać o metodzie, trzeba było odnieść się do stanowiska doktryny na temat status prawa komparatystycznego. Zaprezentowano więc poglądy doktryny, która jest w tej sprawie podzielona; wstępują w niej zarówno zwolennicy uznania „prawa porównawczego” za naukę, jak i przedstawiciele nauki traktujący je jako narzędzie badawcze. Przyczyną tego sporu jest nieprecyzyjność terminologiczna, o której jest mowa w punkcie drugim artykułu. Kolejno w opracowaniu dokonano pogłębionej analizy argumentów prezentowanych przez obie strony tego sporu oraz przedstawiono własną propozycję nowego terminu w postaci „nauki o porównywaniu systemów prawnych”. Dalsza część artykułu zawiera badania nad samą metodą komparatystyczną. W opracowaniu starano się zwrócić uwagę na jej cechy szczególne, wśród których podstawowe znaczenie ma dobór porównywanego obiektu i związane z tym właściwe wskazanie systemów referencyjnych. Cechy te powinien uwzględnić każdy z badaczy rozpoczynający pracę nad opracowaniem z zastosowaniem metody prawnoporównawczej.

In this study we investigate the situated and dynamic nature of the L2 learning experience through a newly-purposed instrument called the Language Learning Story Interview, adapted from McAdams’ life story interview (2007). Using critical case sampling, data were collected from an equal number of learners of various L2s (e.g., Arabic, English, Mandarin, Spanish) and analyzed using qualitative comparative analysis (Rihoux & Ragin, 2009). Through our data analysis, we demonstrate how language learners construct overarching narratives of the L2 learning experience and what the characteristic features and components that make up these narratives are. Our results provide evidence for prototypical nuclear scenes (McAdams et al., 2004) as well as core specifications and parameters of learners’ narrative accounts of the L2 learning experience. We discuss how these shape motivation and language learning behavior.

In the last few years, the Deutsche Bank was facing difficulties which were regularly conceptualised by the international media. The aim of this paper is to study the meaning of the crisis and the role of the Deutsche Bank in the financial turmoil during the “discursive moment” initiated on February 8, 2016, as it was built by the French and Polish general press. On the basis of several articles published in six daily newspapers, we undertake a semantic analysis of nominal noun phrases referring to the current situation, and of the preferential discursive functioning of the chrematonyme Deutsche Bank.

Le texte traduit reflète parfois la tradition d’écriture du droit visé, mais l’équivalence du message juridique, elle, doit être réalisée. La traduction du droit vers une culture juridique différente ne peut se faire sans analyse comparée des droits, dont la connaissance est requise pour réaliser l’équivalence juridique. La forme linguistique du texte cible doit néanmoins correspondre à sa culture. La traduction juridique est alors le point de rencontre entre langues, cultures et droits. Pour advenir, cette rencontre doit reposer sur une connaissance ad hoc des droits en présence. Entre alors en jeu le droit comparé, « compagnon de route » du traducteur, qu’il prépare à l’échange. Pour le réaliser, « il suffit de deux réceptions qui s’entrecroisent» (Carbonnier). Cette opération connaît le succès lorsque concepts et notions se recoupent et que la lettre du droit (le fond) et son expression (la forme) se fondent, illustrant «l’esprit des lois». L’analyse comparative est le moyen d’atteindre ce résultat. Elle est conduite ici sous l’éclairage de la jurilinguistique par l’analyse de termes et notions présentant diverses difficultés de traduction, démontrant la nécessité du droit comparé (I). Une comparaison de traductions du Code Napoléon et d'autres codes civils complètera la quête de l’esprit des lois par la manière dont est rendue la lettre ou l’esprit du texte à traduire (II). Les leçons à tirer s’adressent aux langagiers. Ils trouveront dans la méthode d’analyse comparative de la jurilinguistique matière à perfectionner leurs travaux et, dans les traductions des codes civils, une base de réflexion sur le rôle et la fonction de la traduction.
Przełożenie prawa na inną kulturę prawną polega na analizie porównawczej przepisów właściwych, których opanowanie jest konieczne do uzyskania ekwiwalencji. Forma tekstu docelowego musi również odpowiadać jego kulturze prawnej. Tłumaczenie prawne jest zatem miejscem spotkań języków, kultur i praw. By było ono efektywne, musi się opierać na wiedzy ad hoc w zakresie obu przepisów. W tym momencie w sukurs przychodzi prawo porównawcze, „towarzysz podróży” tłumacza prawnego i prawniczego, którego przygotowuje do przekładu. Aby to zrozumieć, „wystarczą dwa styczne podejścia” (Carbonnier) – gdy idee i pojęcia nakładają się, a litera prawa (substancja) i wyrażenie prawa (forma) łączą się, pokazując „ducha praw”. Sposobem na osiągnięcie tego celu jest benchmarking, który uwidacznia się w świetle jurysdykcji w drodze analizy terminów i pojęć. Przedstawiają one różne trudności w tłumaczeniu, które dowodzą konieczności odwoływania się do prawa porównawczego (I). Porównanie tłumaczeń Kodeksu cywilnego pozwoli prześledzić poszukiwania jak najlepszego przekładu (II). Wnioski skierowane są do profesjonalistów językowych, którzy w porównawczej analizie prawnej znajdą sposób na udoskonalenie swojej pracy, a w tłumaczeniach Kodeksu cywilnego podstawę do refleksji nad rolą i funkcjami tłumaczenia.
Translated texts sometimes reflect the targeted legal system’s conventional manner of writing law; however, the equivalence of the legal message must be realized. Translating law into another legal culture goes through a comparative analysis of the laws involved, the command of which is needed to achieve legal equivalence. The form of the target text must nevertheless correspond to its legal culture. Legal translation is then the meeting point of languages, cultures and laws. To succeed, this meeting must be based on an ad hoc knowledge of both laws. Then comparative law enters into play as the legal translator’s “fellow traveler”, whom it equips for the exchange. To realize it, “two intersecting receptions will suffice” (Carbonnier). This operation is successful when concepts and notions overlap and the letter of the law (the substance) and the law’s expression (the form) merge, demonstrating “the spirit of the laws”. Benchmarking is the way to reach this goal. It is conducted here under the light of jurilinguistics via the analysis of terms and concepts presenting various translation difficulties, which demonstrate the necessity of comparative law (I). A comparison of translations of the Napoleonic Code and other civil codes will complete the quest for the spirit of the laws by the way in which the letter or the spirit of the text to be translated is rendered (II). The lessons to be learned are aimed at language professionals, who will find in jurilinguistic comparative analysis a way to perfecting their work and, in the translations of the civil codes, a basis of reflection on the role and functions of translation.

This article presents the results of comparative research into 9th century vessels discovered in numerous archaeological sites in Lower Silesia. The research was underpinned with petrographic analyses of ceramics representing a progressive trend in pottery. The reason why this issue is discussed is the occurrence of vessels with similar technological and stylistic attributes in both the south and the north of the region under scrutiny. The research leads to a conclusion that the common features shared by the ceramics artefacts may result from foreign influences in the north and the south of the region alike. However, numerous similarities in the final touches of the vessels indicate that in the first half of the 9th century (if not later), Silesian potters shared their experiences while the populations of the north and the south of the region and exchanged various artefacts including vessels. This exchange of experience in pottery production bore fruit in the form of stylistically and formally diverse vessels.

This article presents a statistical and comparative analysis of four spelling conventions that represent different stages in the development of the Polish graphic system: the graphic system of a late-medieval manuscript (hand-written text), the standard spelling convention typical for the first half of the sixteenth century, the accepted and standard modern spelling of the first half of the twentieth century and the innovative set of graphic features used in electronic media. The characteristics of the statistical parameters encompasses dispersion and entropy in the first and the second row of letters, as well as in two-element sets (dyads). The analysis proves that: 1) inasmuch as the degree of differentiation of the distribution of signs, the history of Polish spelling convention prior to the solidification of the modern standard practice (accepted standard system) manifested a self-organizing tendency that was based on a reduction of letter signs and two-element letter combinations (ligatures) with the frequency of 1; 2) innovative solutions used in the set of graphic features characteristic for electronic media do not violate the statistical proportion between letters and their dyads operative and specific for modern standard graphic system 3) in respect to theory and information, the transformations of the graphic substance (graphic system) (within the analysed chronological timeframe) depended on neither progress (evolution) nor degradation.

In the article, I have embarked on a discussion of principles according to which medieval texts are compared. A specific case of such studies are the analyses of erudition that may be found in the surviving texts. The case of Gallus is an exceptional one because we have another text at our disposal that either he or someone close to our chronicler wrote. Therefore, the comparison of these texts is a condition of all further studies. In the article, I have managed to determine a common source of a prayer found both in the text of Translation of St. Nicholas, written by the monk of Lido and in Gallus.  On the example of references to work of antique writers, present in both texts, I attempted to demonstrate how these texts are related.

Szerokich kontekstów i inspiracji autor poszukuje przede wszystkim w dziele Françoisa Julliena.
The paper analyzes two short stories: Deszcz by Zygmunt Haupt and Little landscape with snow by Robert Walser, which seem marginal in terms of their works. The two stories share the anti-essentialist vision of the world. The aim of the comparative analysis is to identify similarities in creating reality, as well as situating the two works in the philosophical context (vagueness and entropy), especially by François Jullien.

The article presents the results of a quantitative analysis of the vocabulary attested in the Polish translation of the work of Pietro de‘ Crescenzi (Piotr Krescentyn) Księgi o gospodarstwie (original title: Opus ruralium commodorum) against the statystical characteristics of the translations of the New Testament from the latter half of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, and the text of Wizerunek własny żywota człowieka poczciwego (The Life of the Honest Man) by Mikołaj Rej. The following statystical parameters were studied: the number of words, the number of entries, K quantity factor, arithmetic mean of the frequency of entries, dispersion of entries, vocabulary originality parameter I, distribution of the autosemantic parts of speech (lexical category) and the distribution of individual autosemantic parts of speech (lexical categories). The analysis shows that, with regard to the statistical approach, the vocabulary of Księgi... is rather closer to Wizerunek than to the translations of the New Testament – in comparison to the latter, Księgi... is characterized by a far more ample vocabulary, greater number of entries and autosemantic words, greater number of attested nouns, adverbs in particular (the latter group is characterized by a higher percentage of entries with high frequency). Księgi..., as compared to the translations of the New Testament, also abounds with participles whose repertory is not only more numerous with regard to words but also to entries. The analysis confims the observation made by Władysław Kuraszkiewicz with reference to the dependence between the quantity of vocabulary and the content of texts – the closer it is to real life and refers to its diverse aspects, the richer vocabulary is used for its rendering.

W niniejszym artykule autorka dokonuje kontrastywnego porównania polskich wytycznych branżowych dotyczących sporządzania tłumaczeń poświadczonych zawartych w Kodeksie tłumacza przysięgłego z następującymi wytycznymi niemieckimi: Richtlinien und Hinweise für die Anfertigung von Urkundenübersetzungen oraz Empfehlungen für die Anfertigung bestätigter/beglaubigter Übersetzungen. Następnie wyniki powyższego porównania odnosi do wykonywania tłumaczeń poświadczonych polskich oraz niemieckich wyroków sądowych.
In the paper, the author undertakes a contrasting comparison of Polish industry guidelines for the preparation of certified translations contained in the Sworn translator's code with the following German guidelines: Richtlinien und Hinweise für die Anfertigung von Urkunden-übersetzungen and Empfehlungen für die Anfertigung bestätigter/beglaubigter Übersetzungen. Next, the results of the above comparison are referred to the certified translation of Polish and German court judgments.
In diesem Artikel werden polnische Branchenrichtlinien für die Anfertigung von beglaubigten Übersetzungen mit deutschen Branchen-richtlinien in kontrastiver Hinsicht verglichen. Die polnischen Richtlinien stammen aus dem Kodex der vereidigten Dolmetscher und Übersetzer (Kodeks tłumacza przysięgłego) und die deutschen aus zwei Branchen-dokumenten, nämlich: Richtlinien und Hinweise für die Anfertigung von Urkundenübersetzungen und Empfehlungen für die Anfertigung bestätigter/beglaubigter Übersetzungen. Anschließend bezieht die Autorin die Ergebnisse des kontrastiven Vergleichs auf die Anfertigung von beglaubigten Übersetzungen polnischer und deutscher Gerichtsurteile.
