Opis:
The ability to read effectively is essential to the success in life. Unfortunately many students experience difficulty in mastering this skill. That is why in this article I have presented certain techniques which can help to develop and improve the students' reading skills. Reading is widely considered to be a passive process whereas it is an active and involving one. To be able to read effectively, the reader must work out what they want to achieve and how well they are progressing. Reading is an active and interactive process involving many skills. Therefore the teacher's role in enhancing the reading skills is enormous.

Opis:
The article refers to a problem of relationship between authority and genealogy, and to their specific functioning in the Old Serbian literature, that is in other words, in the hagiographical, historiographical, and hymnic texts. In all those works, the combination of the both ideas undoubtedly serves the ideological creation, regarding the image of sovereign together with the exposition of his extra-ordinary lineage and destiny which are tied to his place and role in the space of history, politics, religion, and culture. In the literature, this peculiar relationship is expressed by the two characteristic constructions of dynasty and genealogy. With regard to this representation, the dynastic construction is based on the model of biblical motif concerning Jesse’s stem and functions as the saint osier of the family of Nemanjić. As for the second construction, of genealogy, it reveals itself as a component of the classical myth of historiography that determines the beginnings namely, the Serbian sovereign’s mythical genesis that also concerns all his charismatic, saint family.

This article deals with the issue of the role of a translator in translating specialized texts. It is theoretically assumed that a translator of that kind of texts is merely a transferor of information and should not intervene with the meaning of the given text. Numerous studies show, however, that a translator of specialized texts – subject to the nature of the given text – must employ a whole range of translation techniques which aim at explicating certain concealed or unknown messages being conveyed to the receiving party. In this article we strive to prove that these explanatory techniques can take on a totally different dimension when applied to scientific or pragmatic texts. Therefore it can be inferred that translating scientific texts provides for different interventions on the part of the translator than in the case of translating utilitarian texts. Nevertheless, each such intervention is to some extent creative from the point of view of the role of the translator in the process of the transfer.

This paper is relating a practical experience of teaching Romance philology students the translation from ancient French into Polish. The main scope is a restitution of an ancient text respecting not only the equivalence at the Iexical and syntactical level, but also the discourse structures, such as the linear sequence of events and events related from different points of view: some examples of solving particular problems are discussed. The whole procedure resembles that of translating from Latin, rather than a translation from one modern language to another.

Opis:
Infographics has become one the most popular forms used in contemporary communication. It is employed both in traditional media as well as electronic ones in order to present relations between various phenomena or explain particular mechanisms of action in a picturesque way. Infographics is a hybrid form which reaches out for disparate visual elements: linguistic, pictorial and diagram ones, and combines them in a nonlinear way. In media communication infographics occur both as an independent message, or as e.g. an element accompanying a press article and complementing it. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate that infographics as a visual plane can serve the economization and rationalisation of media communication.

Every specialist text carries traces of the institutionalized context in which it is created. The context is based on the socially sanctioned communicative relationship, on the strength of which discourse partners enter into a so-called communicative contract. A text is then a verbal realization of contractual obligations, strictly standardized at the level of genre. Hence, information about the status of the discourse partners and the nature of their contractual (communicative) obligations is essential for accurate interpretation of a text. This, in turn, places double responsibility on the translator, who is obliged not only to transfer the discourse object into the target language, but also to “present” the sender of the original to the recipient of the translate in such a way as to render their status and discourse characteristics. Failing that, the translator will not succeed in reconstructing the original discourse contract, and hence attaining functional coherence of the translation. The aim of this article is to examine whether, and to what extent, translators have managed to present communicating subjects of Polish hospital discharge summary to the French recipient.

Opis:
Comparative studies of the Bible and the sacred texts of adjacent nations have a rich tradition, but research generally focuses on comparing passages of the biblical text with adequate sacral texts of adjacent nations. However, this approach involves two problems: 1* difference of religious status - the Bible is a living reality, whereas the sacral texts of other ancient nations of the Near East are only relics; 2* form of the writings - the Bible is a uniform work, modified by the conscious acts of communities of faith while the writings of adjacent nations survive to our times only in fragments. The article takes off from a different comparatistic conception. My primary concern is not so much to bring out the similarities or discrepancies between Bible passages and adequate sacral texts of adjacent nations but rather to show the whole canon of the holy scriptures of Israel against the backdrop of the sacred writings of the Region. The comparison is built on two assumptions: 1 * origin and usage; 2* addressee of the text. Therefore, it does not refer to the question of literary genres but first and foremost to the dependencies between the text and the community.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis in the article are the etymological explanations presented in the old non-literary texts (i.e. the texts that function primarily outside literature, serving various practical purposes), i.e. in the sixteenth-century Kronika, to jest historyja świata (Chronicle, that is the history of the entire world) by Marcin Bielski and in two eighteenth-century encyclopaedic texts: Informacyja matematyczna (Mathematical information) by Wojciech Bystrzonowski and Nowe Ateny (New Athens) by Benedykt Chmielowski. The review of the etymological comments allows us to take notice of their considerable substantive and formal diversity. These comments apply to both native and foreign vocabulary. On the one hand, they provide information on the origin of proper names (toponyms and anthroponyms), and on the other hand, a whole range of these etymological comments concern common names. A depth of etymological comments presented in non-literary texts is significantly diversified and independent of the nature of the vocabulary to which these comments apply – they can be merely tips on sources of borrowings of foreign words, but they can also constitute a deeper analysis of the meaning and structure of individual words, both native and foreign. These comments are usually implementations of folk etymology. The role of etymological considerations in former non-literary texts is significant. First of all, these texts have a ludic function, typical of popularised texts – they are supposed to surprise, intrigue and entertain readers. Secondly, they serve a cognitive function typical of non-literary texts – they are supposed to expand the readers’ knowledge about the world and language. Thirdly, they have a persuasive function, which is a distinctive feature of both popularised and non-literary texts – they are supposed to provoke the readers’ thoughts on the relationship between non-linguistic reality and the linguistic way of its interpretation, they also stimulate linguistic interests, which was particularly important in the past when the reflection on the native language was poor.

This article in a way constitutes the third part of a cycle of essays on the portrayal of Poland and Poles in autobiographical texts written by foreign authors from the 18th century until the present day. It deals with the 20th and 21st centuries and discusses autobiographical material in which Poland and Polish people feature most heavily (e.g., the diaries of Claudel, Gide, and Mann). Then, the article focuses on several problems, i.e. the Jews and the Jewish question in Poland (e.g. diaries written by Kafka, Gide, Raïssa Maritain, Singer, and Oz), the war (e.g. Queneau’s and Gide’s diaries), Poland after World War II (e.g. the autobiographies of Márai and Oz), and Poland as perceived by travelers (e.g. the diaries of Dublin and others). Topics pertaining to the 21st century are only dealt with here to a limited extent.

Opis:
The author of the paper will attempt to scrutinise, with reference to contextual arguments, a linguistic image of the Egyptian creator in the Old Kingdom religious texts which will be analysed with use of linguistic worldview method. An important inspiration for the author were the studies of Slavonic antiquity conducted by V.V. Ivanov and V.N. Toporov within the structural paradigm using the notion of opposition and the Egyptological, philosophical, anthropological and linguistic studies of J.P. Allen, J. Assman, H. Altenmüller, E. Hornung, P. Tillich, P. Wheelwright and R.A. Rappaport, and Polish scholars – T. Dobrzyńska, M. Makuchowska and the late philosopher L. Kołakowski. The paper is, however, solely an introduction to a further study. The author of the paper is making efforts to define an image of the creator expressed through and in the Egyptian language, reconstituted from fragmentary verbal messages, pictures recorded and preserved in language. It seems crucial that the Egyptian creator-god as “completed one”, comprising in himself all living beings, is embodied in his children and the whole created world.

This research is dedicated to the issue of the classical drama reception, which  is supposed to be canonical, used in the play of Odessian playwright Alexandr Mardan. The concept of modern times appears in Mardan’s plays through the literary and cultural inheritance of the past. The usage of Chekhov’s motives in both plays we deal with — Antract and Anshlag seems not only to resemble the form used in the mass culture, but also stylization and reinterpretation of the classic, which appear here as modern literary devices through which the interpretation of canonical drama occurs.  In both plays one can observe a lack of presentation of classical motives in a modern, revolutionary form, there is no retrieval to the precedent writings with the final idea  of elaborating on Chekhov thoughts. Furthermore, the classical motives are used for the reinterpretation of how theater may influence the modern human being and how endless the attempts to interpret the classic are.

The director, recognizing the advertising messages as an important phenomenon of the modern culture, makes a paraphrase of such texts – both in their verbal and visual layer. Conducting various linguistic experiments, he reveals manipulative mechanisms of advertising slogans. Parodies and caricatures are intended to demonstrate a fictional harmony of advertising texts – instead of the desired fabulous world, the spectator (and reader) is forced to receive brutal messages, going beyond the sphere of taboo.

The article deals with dramaturgy in the broad sense of the term – as a written creative work and the characteristic feature of human activities: artistic and social. The starting point for these discussions is the publication of an anthology of Paweł Demirski’s theatrical texts commissioned by the National Stary Theatre in Krakow. The book is an excellent testimony to stage creativity because it contains conversations with the author and actors about the stages of work in the performance. The article presents reflections on the dramaturgy of the process of creating a text and a theatrical performance, the characteristics of Paweł Demirski’s writing and the content arrangement in the anthology. Reading this book is a peculiar aesthetic experience and a challenge for the reader. The dramaturgy of the message leads to the dramaturgy of its reception: the reader updates and co-creates meanings of theatrical texts, according to individual knowledge and sensitivity. Aesthetic experience is shaped by combining different mental spaces: it is reading a text / seeing a performance.
