Artykuł przedstawia pisarstwo Ziemowita Szczerka w kontekście gatunkowych kwalifikacji jako reportaż podróżniczy. Twórczość tę można odczytać jako przykłady reportażu literackiego, w związku z czym zaprezentowano kwestie sporu o referencyjność i literackość gatunku, inspiracje dzieł Szczerka nurtem gonzo journalism oraz zabiegi twórcze problematyzujące kwestię fikcjonalności w reportażu poprzez odniesienie do problematyki geografii wyobrażonej (E.W. Said), kulturowych auto- i heterostereotypów oraz relacji intertekstualnych. Prowadzi to do stwierdzenia, że reportaże literackie Szczerka, podobnie jak pisarstwo podróżnicze Andrzeja Stasiuka, zanurzone są w fikcjotwórstwie, co tylko podnosi wartość literacką tej twórczości.
This article discusses the writing of Ziemowit Szczerek in the context of its genre credentials as travel reportage. Because Szczerek’s work can be read as literary reportage, this article addresses the controversy over the genre’s referentiality and literary status. It also discusses gonzo journalism, which was a source of inspiration for Szczerek, as well as creative devices that problematize issues of fictionality in reportage in reference to themes of imagined geography (E. W. Said), cultural self-stereotypes and hetero-stereotypes, and intertextual relations. The argument leads to the claim that Szczerek’s literary reportage is deeply embedded in creative fiction, perhaps in the vein of Andrzej Stasiuk’s work, and that this only enhances the value of his work.

The author analyses Hannah Arendt’s writings in search of inspirations for reflecting on the contemporary world’s problems in humanistic (school) education, finding such inspirations in the topics that interested the author of The Human Condition and in her perception of politics, citizenship and thinking as such. Koc’s thesis is that educational documents show a clear deficit of reflection on current challenges, often transnational, that need to be analysed from multiple angles. The article emphasises Arendt’s warningsabout non-thinking as an attitude conducive to totalitarianism, which should unsettle anyone interested in the concept of educating young people. Reconstructing Arendt’s axiology of citizenship and emphasising thevalue of journalistic texts as stories that uncover ambiguity and ask key questions, the author calls for a reconsideration of the nature of Polish language education in contemporary school.

The article aims to present the linguistic means (stylistic methods and vocabulary) used by Henryk Sienkiewicz to create the image of European and American cities in his Listy z podróży do Ameryki. The author of the article also analyses the descriptions of experiencing large and modern cities, proving that the images of European and Americancities perceived and described from a European’s perspective were contrasted. It is the consequence of perceiving European agglomerations as cultural and historic centres cultivating traditional values in contrast to the mainly industrial American cities serving as trading centres full of action and fast-paced life. The choice of linguistic means used to describe urban buildings was determined by the viewpoint of the perceiving subject and the perspective from which the act of perceiving was accomplished.

This text confronts two images of a small episode from the First World War and the struggle of Poland to regain its independence. The literary image, Hospital in Cichinicze, is the story of Melchior Wańkowicz (1926), and the film picture is The Gateaway of Europe by Jerzy Wójcik (1999). The film work was an adaptation of literary material; however, the ways memory is created in the two cases are different. Wańkowicz created a somewhat reporter-like, realistic, non-stereotypical record of events, while Wójcik’s story was more universal and at the same time more rooted in national symbolism.

The aim of the article is to point out and describe the profiles of the concept of EUROPE in Wojciech Jagielski’s non-fiction book All Lara’s Wars. Profiling in ethnolinguistics is a process of creating an individual image (profile) of a particular object. The profiles can be diverse, depending on what kind of aspects are important in shaping a particular subjective vision. Based on the linguistic analysis of the chosen quotes from the book, six profiles of EUROPE have been pointed out: promised land, open home, fortress, package, waiting room and land of disappointment. The common aspect which can be found in all the profiles is the geographical one. However, each profile is shaped differently and is dominated by one of the aspects: living, social or civilisational (cultural). Two of the profiles are positively valued (promised land and open home) and the other four are negatively valued, which leads to the conclusion that the image of EUROPE presented in the book is mostly characterised as pejorative.

Podstawową tezą artykułu jest przekonanie, że warunkiem skutecznego realizowania formacyjnej funkcji edukacji humanistycznej jest refleksja nad współczesnym światem, a szczególnie nad tak niepokojącymi i aktualnymi problemami, jak np. napięcia międzykulturowe, migracje i związany z nimi kryzys uchodźczy. Analiza w polskiej szkole tekstów podejmujących tę tematykę może być odpowiedzią na kryzys etyczny polegający na izolowaniu się od cudzego cierpienia i na bierności wobec zła, zwłaszcza jeśli ofiarami są ludzie należący do innej niż nasza wspólnoty kulturowej czy narodowej. Inspirację do takich rozważań można odnaleźć w reportażach poświęconych uchodźcom i ich sytuacji.
The basic thesis of the article is the conviction that the condition for an effective implementation of the formative function of humanistic education is reflection on the contemporary world, and especially on such disturbing and current problems as, for example, intercultural tensions, migrations and connected with them the refugee crisis. The analysis of texts addressing this topic in the Polish school may be a response to the ethical crisis of isolation from other people’s suffering and passivity towards evil, especially if the victims are people belonging to a different cultural or national community. Inspiration for such considerations can be found in reportages devoted to refugees and their situation.

Wiersz Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza Wilk, Wilki Zbigniewa Herberta i autobiograficzny reportaż Adama Wajraka Wilki łączy specyficzny literacki obraz tych zwierząt – niebezpiecznych, ale wolnych i niezależnych. Portrety wilków używanych jako podstawa budowania metafor, porównań i paralelizmów zmieniały się w ostatnich dekadach wraz z przemianami świadomości zbiorowej. Animal studies jako metodologia badań stanowi zbiór użytecznych narzędzi analitycznych przydatnych w śledzeniu tradycyjnych kulturowych wzorców oraz tropów nowych idei.
The article contains interpretations of three different textes with the main theme – wolves. A poem titled Wolf by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Zbigniew Herbert’s Wolves and Autobiographical reportage Wolves by Adam Wajrak unites special literary vision of those animals – dangerous but also free and independent. Images of wolves as a base of metaphors, comparisons and parallelisms have changed during last decades simultaneously with evolution of common consiousness. Animal studies as a methodology research constitutes a collection of very useful analytic instruments for investigating traditional cultural patterns and trails of new ideas.

Przedstawiono sposoby konstruowania krytyki systemu kolonialnego (poprzez kontrast oraz ironię) oraz jego wyjątkowość na tle innych polskich relacji z podróży do Afryki napisanych w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Scharakteryzowano także specyfikę wyprawy Dębickiego oraz stereotypy związane z rzeczywistością afrykańską, które autor obala bądź podtrzymuje.
This article analyzes the reportage of Tadeusz Dębicki, titled Moienzi Nzadi: At the Gates of the Congo (1928) in terms of its anticolonial attitude. The article reviews the writer’s methods for constructing a critique of the colonial system (through contrast and irony) and discusses its uniqueness against the backdrop of other Polish travel accounts from Africa written in the interwar period. The specific circumstances of Dębicki’s journey are also described here, as well as the prevailing stereotypes associated with conditions in Africa, which the author either subverts or affirms.

The author discusses Hanna Krall’s reportage in the light of its presence in the school didactics of the Polish language (removal from the reading list, its return, presence in the matura exam sheets). She considers a power of the book: it is one of the few readings that activates students emergence. With this on mind she also points to the paths that can be taken during Polish language classes in a secondary school.

Mimowolnymi rezerwatami Bruce Sterling nazwał takie miejsca, które zostały „odzyskane” przez przyrodę na skutek katastrofy, skażenia czy wojny. Tego typu rezerwatem jest Czarnobylska Strefa Wykluczenia, od ponad 30 lat niemal zupełnie niezamieszkiwana przez ludzi. Po jej białoruskiej stronie utworzono nawet Państwowy Poleski Rezerwat Radiacyjno-Ekologiczny. Opuszczone miejscowości pochłania przyroda, a w strefie znajdują swój azyl zagrożone gatunki zwierząt. Jednocześnie zona nadal pozostaje napromieniowana, jej krajobraz wypełniają znaczki radioaktywności, cmentarzyska pojazdów i kopce-mogilniki, w których zakopywano skażone domy, przedmioty, drzewa. W artykule została przedstawiona reprezentacja czarnobylskiego ekosystemu obecna w literaturze niefikcjonalnej ( m.in. teksty Swietłany Aleksijewicz, Mary Mycio, Kate Brown, Igora Kostina ) oraz problematyzacja statusu tego środowiska, nazwanego przez Adama Higginbothama „skażonym edenem”.
Bruce Sterling called involuntary reserves such places that were “recovered” by nature as a result of a catastrophe, contamination or war. This type of reserve is the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, almost completely uninhabited by people for over 30 years. On its Belarusian side, the Polessian State Radiation-Ecological Reserve was established. The abandoned villages have been consumed by nature, and endan-gered animal species find their refuge in the zone. At the same time, the zone is still irradiated, its landscape is filled with radioactivity stamps, vehicle cemeteries and mounds-burials where contaminated houses, objects, trees were buried. The article will present the representation of the Chernobyl ecosystem present in non-fictional literature ( including texts by Svetlana Aleksijewicz, Mary Mycio, Kate Brown, Igor Kostin and others ) and the problematization of the status of this environment, which Adam Higginbotham calls “contaminated Eden.”

The article presents Angelika Kuźniak’s biographical reportages in the context of the theory referred to as “the return to things”. The analysis focuses on the books Marlene, Papusza and Stryjeńska. Diabli nadali. The stories of the women artists’ lives are a kind of journalistic archaeology of things. The aim of this article is to show that the material culture elements presented in Kuźniak’s books reflect characteristic features of women. Things are treated as objects of aesthetic contemplation, one of the most important journalistic sources of information, traces of the past, as well as a kind of message about history.

This article explores Ziemowit Szczerek’s work of reportage, Mordor’s Coming to Eat Us: A Secret History of the Slavs. In his analysis, the author applies Marianne Hirsch’s conception of post-memory practices, Marielle Macé’s conception of literary style, and Michel de Certeau’s “spatial stories.” This text attempts to map the traveler and reporter’s transformations prompted by contact with actual geographical space.

Praca jest próbą pokazania, jak dwa współczesne utwory nawiązujące do formuły gatunkowej reportażu przedstawiają schyłek dziewiętnastowiecznego świata doświadczanego przez mieszkańców wielonarodowego Cesarstwa Austro-Węgierskiego (Martin Pollack) lub też w jaki sposób z jego utratą radzą sobie zwykli ludzie mieszkający na wschodnich rubieżach imperium Romanowów. Pollack patrzy na mieszkańców dawnej Galicji z perspektywy wielokulturowości i cywilizacyjnego rozwoju. Włodzimierz Pawluczuk opisuje grupę związaną z Prorokiem Ilją w perspektywie religioznawczej i antropologicznej. Obaj autorzy pokazują światy, które musiały odejść w niebyt, ale Pawluczuk widzi w nich rezerwuar wartości duchowych.
The article is an attempt of showing how two contemporary works which refer to the form of reportage depict the late 19th century experience of the multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire (Pollack). On the other hand, it shows how this loss is experienced by regular people on the eastern edges of the Romanov empire. Pollack takes a look at the inhabitants of former Galicia from a multicultural and civilisational development perspective. Pawluczuk describes the group formed around the prophet Ilja from the perspective of religious and anthropological studies. Artykuł stanowi analizę wartości tworzących amerykański mit w reportażu historycznym Małgorzaty Szejnert Wyspa klucz. Równość, wolność i sukces, z których słynął Nowy Świat, przyciągały miliony Europejczyków za ocean na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Większość z nich przeszła kontrolę na Ellis Island, gdzie znajdowało się centrum imigracyjne. Reportaż, prezentując różne wymiary selekcji imigrantów, ograniczenia ich wolności oraz ambiwalentne sukcesy, obrazuje, jak nieprzystający do rzeczywistości był amerykański ideał demokracji. Artykuł uznaje Ellis Island za tzw. miejsce pamięci w rozumieniu, jakie nadał temu pojęciu Pierre Nora.
The article is an analysis of the values that create the American Dream in Key Island historical reportage written by Malgorzata Szejnert. Equality, freedom and success were the hallmarks of New World, attracting millions of Europeans at the turn of the century. Most of them went to Ellis Island, where the immigration center was. The selection of immigrants, the limitations of their freedom, and their ambivalent successes illustrate, how unrealistic were the American ideals of democracy. The article acknowledges Ellis Island as the „site of memory” in the sense given by Pierre Nora.
