    The article indicates the features of space ascribed to the literary protagonists who can be regarded as outsiders. Three types of figures of an “outsider out of necessity” have been selected: a rogue/scoundrel, a homosexual and a chav. For each of these figures—and they are characteristic for the Polish latest prose—distinctive dominant space is attributed, which defines, in different ways, and simultaneously brings out the limiting one-dimensionality and, tragic in its expression, the seclusion associated with the condition of “outsiders out of necessity”. With reference to a rogue/scoundrel especially important is flattening (certain “one-dimensionality”) of the disintegrating landscape. In the case of homosexuals there dominates a closed space of one’s own house (flat). For chavs, in turn, characteristic are labyrinth-like districts of urban ghettos.

    The article attempts to show the role literary space can play as a carrier of values in the literary and cultural education of students. This problem will be discussed using J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit or There and Back Again fantasy novel as an example. Research on the reception of this book in Poland by contemporary teenagers and my experience with the discussed issues have motivated me to describe a few strategies for dealing with this novel in Polish language education in axiological terms.

    At first glance, the documentary films that the outstanding Polish filmmaker Grzegorz Królikiewicz was making at the turn of the 1970s, may seem less experimental than his feature films (one only needs to recall such innovative films as Through and Through or The Dancing Hawk). Viewed against the context of certain radical formal decisions, they may even strike one as traditional. Nevertheless, if one were to look closely at Królikiewicz’s early documentaries, one can see that they are more complicated than they seem and that what we have there is “unobvious” experimental cinema. An internal conflict is created by the relationship between form and content, the tension between them, and sometimes even discussion. This concerns his poetic short films (Don’t Cry, Brothers and Men), based in part on Królikiew- icz’s conception of “off-screen cinema space”, as well as his psychodramas (Fidelity, The Murderer’s Letter). The true message of these films has been carefully concealed, and has to be looked for in the way the director presents everyday reality to us.

    The article deals with the relationship between film and painting, as well as the sciences (physics, cosmology) of the 20th century. It introduces the historical context important for the time when Kubrick’s film was made, and addresses the issue of abstraction in cinema, contemporary painting and cosmology, confronting artistic and scientific ideas (the models of the Universe). The starting point for the detailed analysis was “autonomous abstract film” (Alicja Helman), which as a film inside a film combines various cinematic types and genres. The analysis of takes and sequences of this film inside a film made it possible to decipher the director’s idea, which is expressed in intra-film references. The particular results of the research were compared with the possible iconographic context (Gerhard Richter). The inclusion of a diagnosis obtained on the basis of materials examined in the Kubrick Archives in London (Kamil Kościelski), and references to cultural tradition (Plato), supplement the aforementioned considerations in an important way.

    The text is devoted to discussing the formation methods and the functions of screen space in shots by Mieczysław Jahoda in the films Zimowy zmierzch (directed by S. Lenartowicz) and Pętla (directed by W.J. Has). Mieczysław Jahoda is presented as one of the main initiators of stylistic changes in the films of Polish School in the mid 1950s. The analysis concerns the camera means applied by Jahoda in order to obtain screen effects: light, frame composition, photographic optics and perspective transformation. The film shots by Mieczysław Jahoda are characterized by an exceptional ability to evoke mental space, emotions, memory and imagination via the shapes of screen space. Their feature is a special esthetization aimed at creating the atmosphere of films, as well as symbolic and cultural references.

    The paper is a comparative analysis of the circumstances influencing symbolic spaces in four movies by Franz Weihmayr in the years 1931–1942: Dzikie Pola [Wild Fields], Halutzim, La Habanera and The Great Love. The analysis allows for delineating the development of the German cinematographer Franz Weihmayr’s career, which, in the context of historical-political and ideological-artistic circumstances, can serve as an example of a broader phenomenon: a particular fluctuation of choices made by German cinematographers over the Weimar, Nazi, and post-war periods. This analysis is of pioneering importance because of the paucity of publication heretofore dedicated to Weihmayr’s works, who at the time worked together with, among others, Leni Riefenstahl, Frank Wysbar, and Hans Detlef Sierck, as well as Polish directors, such as Józef Lejtes and Aleksander Ford. The framework for semiotic analyses of the symbolic spaces of the movies mentioned above are two groups of contexts connected with ideas stemming from contradictory bases: the idea of cosmopolitism and the idea of Nazism.

    The East German-Polish co-production The Silent Star (1960, Kurt Maetzig) belongs to the group of early postwar Eastern European science fiction films which still remain barely examined by film and genre historians. The article summarizes the existing research on the film and investigates not only the specific formal character of Maetzig’s unprecedented project, but also the numerous ideological and political motivations which stood behind it.

    The present paper aims to investigate and compare the conceptualization and verbalization of the in-out relation in Danish and Polish. The introductory paragraphs focus on the differences in the distribution of content in Polish and Danish employing Leonard Talmy’s typological classification of languages into verb-framed and satellite-framed, and provide information about Danish Directional Adverbs which are believed to be the key to understanding spatial relations in Danish. The analysis in the following paragraph reveals similarities and differences in the perception of the in-out relation through image schemas such as container and center-periphery. The analysis of the center-periphery image schema in Danish reveals that there is often a presupposed reference point in situations where the directional adverb does not refer to the in-out relation denoted by the prepositional phrase, which leads to a description of the general structure of this image schema in the last part of the article.

    Honorata z Wiśniowskich Zapová (1825–1856) była polską szlachcianką z zachodniej Ukrainy, którą małżeństwo z czeskim urzędnikiem Karlem Vladislavem Zapem zawiodło do Pragi. Po czesku publikowała utwory, które charakteryzowały przestrzeń jej dzieciństwa, nadawała im charakter szkiców etnograficznych zapoznających z Galicją i Ukrainą, krajem zamieszkałym przez bardzo różniących się od Czechów słowiańskich pobratymców. Przez te utwory jednak prześwieca tęsknota za utraconą krainą, idealizacja jej, stawianie wyżej niż praska przestrzeń, w którą weszła. Praska przestrzeń ją rozczarowała, ale pisarka dążyła do wzbogacenia jej nie tylko dzięki własnym wspomnieniom, ale także przez usilną działalność na niwach: literackiej, pedagogicznej, a nawet towarzyskiej.
    Honorata z Wiśniowskich Zapová (1825–1856) was a Polish noblewoman from western Ukraine whose marriage with the Czech official Karl Vladislav Zap brought her to Prague. She published texts in Czech in which she described the space of her childhood. She gave them the character of ethnographic essays presenting Galicia and Ukraine, lands inhabited by Slavic brothers very much different from the Czechs. These works emanate with a longing for the lost land, its idealization and evaluating it higher than the Prague space which she infiltrated. The Prague space disappointed her but the writer aimed at enrich it not only by her own memories but also through her continuous work in the realms of literature, pedagogy and society.

    Przedmiotem zainteresowania autorów są literackie przekształcenia miejsc południowo-wschodniej Polski międzywojennej (w dwóch opowiadaniach Zygmunta Haupta) oraz z czasów ustrojowego przełomu pod koniec XX wieku (jedna z „opowieści galicyjskich” Andrzeja Stasiuka). Punktem wyjścia uczyniono dwa doświadczenia dydaktyczne z utworem drugiego z pisarzy. Obaj pisarze ewokują w swoich utworach fenomen miejsc pustych, ogołoconych wskutek zawirowań historycznych, ale także wydanych na działanie „ślepej” natury. W toku analizy (wykorzystującej metodologię geografii kulturowej i geopoetyki) przestudiowane zostały językowe próby uchwycenia tekstury miejsc oraz problematyki czasu, wynikającej z doświadczania konkretnej przestrzeni. Istotnym elementem omawianych opowiadań jest żywioł pracy wyobraźni, za pomocą której artyści usiłują wypełnić terytoria dotknięte pustką. Jeszcze inna ważna kwestia to rozporządzalność miejsca w stosunku do znajdującego się w nim podmiotu.
    The subject of interest of the authors of an article are literary transformations of the places of south-eastern Poland in the interwar period (in two stories by Zygmunt Haupt) and from the systemic breakthrough at the end of the 20th century (one of the „Galician stories” by Andrzej Stasiuk). The starting point was two didactic experiences with the work of the latter writer. Both writers evoke in their works the phenomenon of empty places, stripped as a result of historical turmoil, but also spent on the action of „blind” nature. In the course of the analysis (using the methodology of cultural geography and geopoetics), linguistic attempts to grasp the texture of places and the problems of time resulting from the experience of a specific space were studied. An important part of the stories discussed is the element of imagination work, with the help of which artists try to fill the territories affected by emptiness. Yet another important issue is the availability of space in relation to the subject placed in it.
