Opis:
At the turn of the 20th century, Macedonia was a region still controlled by the waning Ottoman Empire, though intensely coveted by the neighbouring Balkan states, which deployed national propaganda movements in Macedonia, in preparation for future territorial annexations. It is this author’s contention that the “Macedonian question” thus engendered gives rise to several overlapping triadic configurations of interlocking, interacting and mutually monitoring nationalisms, as per the analytical model put forth by Rogers Brubaker. Working on this premise, and after adjusting Brubaker’s model to account for the specific relational settings of the Macedonian question, this author proceeds to draft a case study of a specific triadic configuration, among several operating in fin-de-siècle Macedonia: namely, the one arisen out of the mutual monitoring and interaction of a Romanian nationalizing nationalism, a Greek nationalizing nationalism, and two Aromanian (or Vlach) minority nationalisms.

The article analyses relationships between history and memory in the context of Catalonian nationalism. Its essential aim is to demonstrate how one makes (i.e. uses and abuses) memory in Catalonia. The article analyses the manifestations of underlying identity conflicts in the social spaces of Catalonia, chiefly Barcelona, encountered in the streets, on the sidewalks, motorways, buildings, or beaches. The study focuses on elements that made their appearance after the illegal Catalan independence referendum of October 1st, 2017. Relying on participant observation, the author shows Catalan public space as a domain of semantic and polysemous game, in which struggle for freedom and free speech is the core element.

The article deals with the relation between films and the concept of the national identity. These issues are discussed on the example of Serbian cinema in the 1990s. Using Anthony Smith’s approach to the visual representation of national identity, the ways in which films in Serbia construct national identity is discussed. After that, several films are analyzed that critically question the concept of nationalism. This analysis demonstrates how ideology, in this particular case, nationalistic ideology, at the semantic level can be related to films, one of the most influential segments of popular culture.

The subject of this paper is nationalism as a direction of political thinking, where the idea of the nation is the dominant principle. The main Polish nationalist political parties of the recent 25 years include: National Revival of Poland, Polish National Community and National Party „Szczerbiec”. The main German nationalist political parties include: National Democratic Party of Germany, The Republicans, The Right, Pro NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia). Far-right parties in Poland and in Germany are against the European Union and the process of European integration. The nationalist parties in Europe fear economic and cultural globalisation, multicultural- ism, immigrants, Islam, materialism and consumerism that – in their opinion – threaten their respective nations.

The article is devoted to a reflection on the category of time in Georgi Gospodinov’s novel Vremeubežiŝte (2020), where the author undertakes a reflection on the processes of culpable and non-culpable self-destruction of societies that have rejected the rules of Enlightenment rationalism. Using the tools of dystopia, he creates a world gripped by collective madness, the sources of which he derives from extra-literary reality and links to contemporary political and cultural processes. Leszek Kolakowski’s concept of time as the vault of the human home, which is based on four pillars: reason, God, love, death, remains the philosophical point of reference for my deliberations. In turn, the concept of retroutopia of the sociologist of culture Zygmunt Bauman provided me with tools to reflect on a new type of rationalism after the conservative turn. René Girard’s concept of mimetic competition was helpful in considering the structure of the world presented in the novel.

In this paper I propose to demonstrate how the anthropological view can highlight the effects of the relationship between ethnic nationalism and global processes. Showing the results of an ethnographical research conducted in 2015, I focus on the representation of social identity in the contemporary Basque Country. I emphasize the central role played by the new technologies for the identification of the Basque communities’ boundaries. The creation of „the eighth province“ (or province of the diaspora) shows how, in this context, Internet could transform the “imagined community” into a virtual reality. The ethnographical view proves to be useful to understand how local practices and discourses can interact with global phenomena: particularly significant is the spreading of archaeogenetic investigations in Euskal Herria, in order to verify the hypothesis of a reproductive isolation of Basque people. Moreover, a big part of local population is using genetic tests proposed online by DNA consulting agencies. It is important to identify how these genetic narratives are absorbed and reused by local populations and if they can reshape the past of a mnemonic community, influencing the representation of its future.

We read buildings and monuments of “Skopje 2014” project as texts, interpret them as symbols recognizing as signs of multilayered ideas and interpretations of the nation under strong political patronage. The text shows how a monument in a very short period creates multiple layers of symbolism which, depending on social contexts, can be read in different ways.

The paper examines the continuing viability of the critique of methodological nationalism in the context of recent resurgence of nationalist sentiments across western liberal democracies. Using the distinction between first and second modernity, it shows how cosmopolitan social theorising can actually be seen as predictive of some of the effects that nationalist populism has enjoyed in the context of the post-2008 series of crises. The discussion is mostly focused on the challenge the current political dynamics poses to the weak forms of social integration underpinning the project of European supra-national unification.

The article examines Israeli cinema as a critical participant in the local drama of national ideology and national identity. Israeli filmmakers have engaged in enunciating the national culture, in the context of the medium’s history, political ideologies, and the tension between high art and popular culture. The historical review of Israeli films shows dramatic changes over the years from nationalistic propaganda to radical critique and post-Zionism. Israeli cinema appears now to seek a constructive and fruitful dialogue with the viewers. In the recent wave of popular films, the national ideology is more conscious of its past mistakes and inherent deficiencies; its presentation of national identity is less narrow and more open to alternative types, thereby suggesting new vistas of national culture.

Opis:
Żywotność romantycznego paradygmatu wraz z tendencjami do swoistego polonocentryzmu skłaniają autora do refleksji nad formułą obecności Polski w nowoczesnym, wielokulturowym, dynamicznie zmieniającym się świecie. W ten sposób polskość zyskuje status sacrum, a narrator-ideolog zwycięża nad narratorem-psychologiem i myślicielem.
The article presents a critical analysis of Latarnik by Henryk Sienkiewicz and its reception in the school environment. The interpretation of the short story overlaps with a model of Polish patriotism which draws its inspiration from the 19th century. The model still seems to be publicly supported, also by the reformed school, despite the fact that it stands in opposition to current geopolitical, economic and social situation. Such an ever-present romantic concept along with polonocentric trends provoke a reflection on Polish presence in the modern, multicultural, dynamically changing world. What becomes the focal point of the article is the conflict between two systems which intertwine with the main character’s life – the universal, existential system versus local (national), thus, Polish-oriented one. This sets the Pole against the world. The author also points out to a mystical and Eucharistic character of the final part of Latarnik – it idealizes a sudden wave of nostalgia felt by Skawiński. In this way Polishness acquires a status of sacrum while the narrator-ideologist defeats the narrator-psychologist and thinker. Axiologically and anthropologically-wise, the main character appears as “a product of Polish culture” which values romantic acts of heroism more than everyday work or by far less spectacular diligence.

The Medieval Balkans are characterized by three basic imperial archetypes – Byzantine ecumenism and the imperial ideas of Bulgarians and Serbs. The Byzantine political doctrine based upon the idea that the empire is called upon to impose the Christian religion over the barbarian worlds was transformed throughout the period of the Balkan Revival into the so-called „Megali idea” and found its reflection in the political goals of the Greek Kingdom during the Balkan Wars. The Bulgarian Medieval archetype, expressed in Simeon’s idea of a Bulgarian-Byzantine empire with Constantinople as its capital and in the concept that took shape in the ХІІІ-th century of „Tarnovo – the Third Rome”, gave Paisii Hilendarski grounds to provoke the national self-conscience. The apogee of Renaissance aspirations, San Stefano Bulgaria, was not realized but it gave birth to the myth of „Bulgaria bordering three seas”, which pushed Bulgaria into the wars as a road to national union. The third „player” on the Balkan scene – the Kingdom of Serbia in its turn sought its grounds in Stefan Dushan’s empire and its Renaissance version – the „ Načertanije” of Ilija Garašanin. Thus, the Balkan union, created in the name of a noble and just cause – to liberate their Christian „brothers” from the oppression of the Ottoman Islamic Empire, turned out in its very bud to be on mined  land by these projects imperial in their nature. The Medieval Balkans are characterized by three basic imperial archetypes – Byzantine ecumenism and the imperial ideas of Bulgarians and Serbs.
