The author investigates how James Joyce stylizes the space in his novel Ulysses for drama. For this purpose he carries out a comparative analysis of some episodes in this book. This analysis leads to the conclusion that Joyce transposes some dramatic genres and specifically dramatic writing techniques, especially associated with August Strindberg. Kozłowski emphasizes the dramatic character of some motifs that create spatial conditions in Joyce’s novel. Furthermore, he compares these motifs with the literary works of the greatest modern dramatists.

The article deals with the ways in which Baroque works and their authors were presented in the positivist history of literature. The source material for the analysis was provided by the texts written by Piotr Chmielowski, Stanisław Tarnowski, Adam Bełcikowski, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Felicjan Faleński. The article discusses the sources for a rather distinct dislike of the literary output of Baroque authors in general, which was in line with the then well-established opinions deeply rooted in European research, but also derived from a valuation based on national and patriotic criteria. A certain differentiation in research methods is also indicated, mostly of those stemming from the spirit of Taine, but, occasionally, approaching Baroque works with the help of a stylistic analysis and thus making it possible to show more appreciation to the literature created in the period that, as understood from the positivist perspective, was believed to be of inferior quality.

The essay reconstructs the scribal collection of Ragusan literature compiled by Đuro Ferić (1739–1820) and currently scattered across various libraries. It argues that the focus on individual scribes is the best way of understanding Ragusan manuscript culture and of identifying relationships among different manuscript witnesses. Once scribal collections are reconstructed, it is possible to determine to what extent scribes understood their job as involving specific editorial decisions rather than just mechanical copying of the text in front of them. The approach is recommended not just to scholars interested in manuscript culture but to those interested in the larger questions of literary history as well.

The paper The Fictions of Literary Criticism refers to a polemic between Manfred Kridl and Waclaw Borowy which was conducted in several articles published in the years 1936–1957. The polemic played a significant role in the development of modern Polish literary criticism. The matter of dispute was a new method of literary criticism announced by Kridl in his renowned Introduction to the Research of Literary Work (1936). The main topics of the discussion were the problems of the literary process, the evaluation of a literary work and the uses of scientific methods in humanities. The paper’s author pays attention especially to the rhetorical and literary means of argumentation which were used in the creation of this unusual form of non-fiction.

The article discusses the research proposal presented in Światowa historia literatury polskiej. Interpretacje [World History of Polish Literature. Interpretations], edited by Magdalena Popiel, Tomasz Bilczewski and Stanley Bill. Mikołajczak contrasts the research concept of world literature with the dominant approaches to the world literature in the area of contemporary literary studies and the traditional model of the history of literature. She reflects on the situation of Polish literature in the world, taking into account the ways in which Polish works circulate in other cultural circles, the possibilities and limitations of translation as well as shifts within the canon. Bardzo niewiele przetrwało informacji na temat życia Boniperta, pierwszego biskupa miasta Pécs, żyjącego we wczesnym średniowieczu. Analiza źródeł węgierskich wskazuje, że został biskupem Pécs w roku 1009, zakończył episkopat w roku 1036 i że zmarł w roku 1042, prawdopodobnie na Węgrzech. Niestety, źródła milczą, jeśli chodzi o życie kapłana przed objęciem stanowiska biskupa w Pécs. Przeprowadzone badania antroponimiczne imienia „Bonipert” sugerują, że biskup był pochodzenia frankońskiego lub północnowłoskiego. Trudno dziś ustalić, która z tych hipotez jest właściwa, gdyż na korzyść każdej z nich przemawiają interesujące argumenty, a jednocześnie każda z hipotez kryje poważne słabości. Należy jednak podkreślić, że jedyny dokument dotyczący Boniperta, który nie jest pochodzenia węgierskiego, pochodzi z obszaru współczesnej północno-zachodniej Francji. Dokument ten to list napisany przez słynnego biskupa Fulberta z Chartres w odpowiedzi na prośbę Boniperta o wypożyczenie manuskryptu Pryscjana. Jeżeli posłużyć się głównie tym tekstem w dyskusji na temat pochodzenia pierwszego biskupa miasta Pécs, to należy zaznaczyć, że w opinii uczonych żądanie Boniperta wynikało z faktu, iż biskup potrzebował tekstu do pracy dydaktycznej. Prośba ta jest dowodem na istnienie szkoły katedralnej w Pécs w okresie działania pierwszego biskupa. Należy również podkreślić, że budynek szkoły katedralnej nie jest jedynym osiągnięciem przypisywanym Bonipertowi przez uczonych. Kilka lat temu profesor László Havas wysunął hipotezę, że istnieje powiązanie między Bonipertem a pochodzeniem Libellus de Instutione Morum, dziełem z gatunku speculum principale, napisanym w pierwszym dwudziestopięcioleciu XI w. przez anonimowego autora na zlecenie Stefana dla jego syna, Emeryka. Pomimo raczej hipotetycznego charakteru ze względu na bardzo małą liczbę zachowanych dokumentów dowodowych, prowadzone badania nad pracą intelektualną biskupa Boniperta dały pewne interesujące wyniki. Można na ich podstawie wnioskować, że Bonipert był prawdopodobnie bardzo dobrze wykształcony i był traktowany jak równy przez jednego z największych intelektualistów swych czasów, Fulberta z Chartres. Jego troska o edukację nie budzi żadnych wątpliwości, gdyż z wszelkim prawdopodobieństwem był założycielem szkoły katedralnej w Pécs. Prezentowała ona zapewne dobry poziom niedługo po jej założeniu. Jak wynika z naszego pobieżnego badania kwestii związku między Bonipertusem a Libellus de Institutione Morum, pytanie dotyczące tego dzieła literackiego jest dużo bardziej złożone. Nie można jednak formalnie wykluczyć hipotezy, że pierwszy biskup miasta Pécs był zaangażowany w tworzenie pierwszego pomnika średniowiecznej literatury węgierskiej.

Autorka artykułu skupia się na biografii i prozie Włodzimierza Odojewskiego – jednego z najważniejszych współczesnych polskich pisarzy. Od 2008 jego spuścizna literacka jest gromadzona na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu. Celem pracy jest wskazanie, jak zbiór archiwalny może być wykorzystany w dydaktyce na różnych etapach kształcenia. Tekst stanowi również swego rodzaju propozycję dla nauczycieli, jak zaznajomić uczniów i studentów z twórczością Odojewskiego. Część pierwsza pokazuje dokumenty archiwalne (rękopisy, maszynopisy, korespondencję powstałe w różnych etapach życia pisarza) jako źródło wiedzy o biografii autora i dziejach jego twórczości, jak również przybliża pracę archiwisty. Druga część przedstawia znaczące dla Odojewskiego miejsca w Wielkopolsce, opisane w jego opowiadaniach, które stanowią indywidualne zapisy pamięci zachowane w tekstach literackich.  
The author of the article focuses on the biography and prose of Włodzimierz Odojewski – one of the most important contemporary Polish writers. Since 2008, his literary archive has been collected at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The aim of the work is to indicate how archival collection can be used in the didactic work at various stages of education. The text is, as well, a kind of proposal for teachers how to familiarize students with Odojewski’s work. First part of the article shows the documents (manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence related to stages of writer’s life cycle) as a source of knowledge about the author’s life and history of his literary output, and also describes some of the archivist’s tasks. The second outlines the places in Greater Poland significant for the writer – Poznań and Kłecko, described in his short stories. These stories are examples of individual memory saved in literary texts.

У статті досліджено теоретичні та практичні засади створення канону в польських та українських історико-літературних синтезах у контексті загальноєвропейських історіографічних традицій. Виокремлено стрижневі критерії селекції історико-літературного матеріалу, а також розглянуто таксономічні тенденції в історіях літератури XVIII–ХХ століття. З’ясовано основні аспекти канонізації текстів в українських та польських історіографічних корпусах, які насамперед відображені у формальних характеристиках, критеріях відбору художніх текстів, авторських інтерпретаціях, концептуальних підходах та методологічній базі. У статті проартикульовано основні здобутки істориків літератури XVIII–ХХ століття, а також комплексно визначено методологію створення цілісного та науково обґрунтованого корпусу історії українського та польського письменства.
The article investigates the theoretical and practical principles of creating a canon in Polish and Ukrainian historical and literary syntheses in the context of European historiographical traditions. The core criteria of selection of historical and literary material are singled out, and taxonomic tendencies in the histories of literature from the 18th–20th centuries are considered. The main aspects of the canonization of texts in Ukrainian and Polish historiographical corpora are clarified, which are primarily reflected in the formal characteristics, criteria for selecting literary texts, the author’s interpretations, conceptual approaches and the methodological basis. The article articulates the main achievements of literary historians of the 18th–20th centuries, as well as comprehensively defining the methodology for creating a holistic and scientifically sound corpus of the history of Ukrainian and Polish literature.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja dwu przykładowych sposobów pisania o literaturze okresu PRL i, w szerszym kontekście, dwu form uprawiania historii literatury jako takiej. Wskazując na podstawowe przesłanki istnienia współczesnej historii literatury (utrata neutralności języka badawczego, nieostrość granic przedmiotu badań literaturoznawczych, zmieniona sytuacja nauk humanistycznych), autor artykułu prezentuje formę studium jednego roku (a single year study) oraz badania inspirowane koncepcjami nowego regionalizmu. Dają one możliwość prześledzenia tematyki dotąd słabo obecnej w badaniach nad kulturą PRL (kultura lokalna, relacje między kulturą oficjalną i lokalną, trwałość podziałów porozbiorowych w kulturze powojennej) oraz przybliżenia powojennego doświadczenia poprzez wieloaspektową prezentację pojedynczego momentu w czasie (studium jednego roku).
The aim of this article is to put forth two exemplary methods for writing about literature from the PRL period and, in a broader context, two forms of constructing a history of literature by this model. Enumerating the basic premises for a contemporary history of literature (the loss of neutrality for critical languages, the blurring of borders that define the object of literary studies, and the the altered state of the human sciences), this article’s author proposes the form of the single year study as well as studies inspired by the conceptual apparatus of new regionalism. These approaches offer a chance to investigate thematics that have thus far been ignored in scholarship on PRL-era culture (local culture, the relationship between official and local culture, and the persistence of the internal borders of partitioned Poland in postwar culture) as well as an intimate approach to postwar experience through the multifaceted representation of an isolated moment in time (the single year study).

Goethe’s Faust was long defined in Germany as an established part of literature lessons and as a part of canon, but a paradigm change in didactics and in literature science has challenged both. This essay takes a brief look at history of German-literature-lessons and at different methods of teaching and reading literature, especially Goethe’s Faust – analytical, productive and creative. It gives a survey about children’s books to Faust, comics and summaries and demonstrates the correlation between knowledge and reading comprehension.

The article analyses the unique copy of the old Polish catholic hymn book Pieśni nabożne na święta uroczyste według porządku Kościoła ś. katolickiego na cały rok z wielką pilnością zebrane [Songs of piety and devotion...] published in Cracow in 1627 and found at the library at Escorial in Spain. The book, apparently the first known printed Polish catholic extensive hymn book, contained over 140 songs, in Polish and Latin, including works written by Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej. The article also describes later editions of the hymn book. This is a particularly important book in the history of Polish culture because it was repeatedly republished in different printing offices, not only Catholic, under the same or slightly changed title as late as until the nineteenth century.
