Opis:
Asperger syndrome has been included in the common category of autistic disorders in current medical classifications. In spite of that, there are still some researches allowing us to see the differences in the structure and functioning of the brains of people with autism and Asperger syndrome. Differentiation at the level of diagnosis is important because of the different educational and therapeutic needs of children with autism and AS. This paper presents the concept of dimensional case assessment of children with Asperger syndrome. The dimensional approach allows for viewing the disorder multidimensionally, taking into account the severity of the phenomenon and in connection with other factors, not only other disorders, which significantly reduces the omission of non-prototypical cases in diagnoses and accelerates the use of therapeutic measures. It is necessary because of the low effectiveness of the diagnostic categorical approach.

Opis:
This article is a voice in a streamlined discussion on methods for diagnosing adult patients with aphasia. The variety of aphasic symptoms and the complexity of the clinical picture of patients after neurological incidents often make it impossible to conduct an examination with standardised, well-known methods [see Siudak 2017]. The signals of reluctance towards the methods of examination sent by patients are uttered expressis verbis by people who have overcome aphasia: we need a conversation, not an examination. How then, do we turn diagnosis into a meeting? How can we determine the level of linguistic functioning without having to make the patient aware of what they can no longer do? The Gradual Test Method developed by the author is a research proposal, in which the determination of a patient’s level of language difficulty is based on a gradual transition from easier to more complex structures, without repeating the same procedures many times.

The classic understanding of diagnosis is connected with the practical activity, mainly in medicine. Currently, however, diagnostics have a much wider meaning. It covers not only natural science but also technical sciences. Social sciences, in turn, included diagnosis in the typology of empirical research, mainly about a practical goal, but more and more often also cognitive. The problems of assessment within diagnosis processes, type of social research and the diagnosis as the stage of any research in social sciences are revealed by the author. The paper ends with the emphasizing of diagnosis features and its educational applications in modern research plans.

Speech and language are important in the mental and emotional development of every human being. Various speech disorders that affect the daily functioning, communication and acquiring the basic human needs can disrupt the functioning of a person in society. In the case of people with intellectual disabilities, this is an oligophasia, or the speech disorder characteristic for people with reduced intellectual ability. In this article, the author draws attention to the importance of a detailed speech diagnosis, which is the basis for the later therapeutic process. He presents in on the example of a child with moderate-degree intellectual disability, using the Afa-Skala test, while at the same time demonstrating its usefulness in diagnosing the intellectually disabled children’s language disorders. In the final part of the text the author deals with the problem of speech therapy in children with these disorders.

Object literature offers standards of diagnostic procedure for oligophasia. The book market still lacks, however, tools that would be developed for the purpose of logopaedic diagnoses of persons with intellectual disabilities (ID), which could fully assess the speech of a child with oligophasia. Presently, specialists utilise tools used for diagnosing other disorders or create their own research tools. The choice of relevant diagnostic tools, and, as a result – later result analysis, is a complex process mostly due to the great variation of functioning of persons with ID, and due to the lack of developed reference norms for the population of persons with ID (conclusions on language development in this group are by and large quite general, frequently formulated intuitively and without support by empirical studies). As a result, the author concluded an analysis of diagnostic tools available on the book market that could provide aid in the logopaedic assessment of a child with ID, stressing the need to create an original tool adapted for diagnosing the speech disorder of oligophasia.

This paper describes using current literature and research a problem that has plagued social scientists for centuries, see that of „moral sentiments?. Human beings are inherently social by nature and hold certain regard for others? opinions (esteem preferences) as well as for others generally (altruism). It is argued in the article that such preferences may in fact be consistent with a core rational human agent. It is furthermore argued that the lack of regard for such preferences in social sciences research (and particularly within the domain of economics) severely weakens models and theories in the respective disciplines. A few potential avenues for including social preferences writ large into social science (read: economic) modeling are outlined.

The start of school education is an important and difficult phase in every child’s life. However with each one of them, we have to deal with the individual pace and specificity of development in each sphere, and even so it is difficult to recognize every child as equally mature as a pupil. Both the evaluation of child progress in the education process and the readiness for school education are made through the prism of linguistic proficiency. In the case of child’s hearing loss, especially when it is congenital or acquired at a very early stage, the development of speech and language is delayed. The determinant of this situation is the lack of access to the audible voice of the guardians. In a slightly different situation there are children with hearing impairment, having deaf parents. These people, from their earliest years, develop their sign language skills, which are primary to them. An increasing number of hearing impaired children go to integration classes in public schools. Does this mean that the psychological and pedagogical diagnosis procedure of the aforementioned group of children, including the study of their school maturity, can be considered appropriate?

During my neurologopedic work with patients, I often encounter problems with swallowing that coexist with other disorders associated with neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. This article is an introductory report on the research on the impact of swallowing disorders on the functioning of individuals in the family and society. The described case study concerns a patient with additional health conditions, in whom swallowing disorders (dysphagia) are a consequence of damage to the Central Nervous System (CNS), more specifically cerebrovascular diseases. The article was written on the basis of medical documentation kept from the beginning of the disease, consultations with specialists, as well as an interview with the patient’s family. A key role was also played by neurologopedic diagnosis and subsequent research conducted during the therapy, which allowed for the proper selection of therapeutic agents, proved the efficiency of the therapy, both in the neurological and social sphere.

Bearing in mind a multi-profile diagnosis of the disorder and including various spheres of child’s functioning, the diagnosis was referenced to programming the process of support. The author concludes by presenting a reflection on dilemmas and challenges in education of autistic children.

Opis:
The article deals with the problem of differential diagnosis of extreme reticence or selective speech in a child, categorised as selective mutism and shyness. Selective mutism is an increasingly recognized disorder among preschool and school children. It manifests itself functionally in the sphere of speech and communication, but in relation to the anxiety factor. As an anxiety disorder, it is categorised in the latest medical classifications ICD-11 and DSM-5, and therefore, primarily psychological or psychiatric therapeutic intervention could be expected. The specificity of the pathomechanism of selective mutism, however, requires interdisciplinary activities, with a room for a speech therapist, a special pedagogue (e.g. at a public school as a supporting teacher), any other pedagogue working with the child (educator, teacher of integrated classes, subject teacher), other specialists (therapist pedagogue, physiotherapist), as well as the parents. The speech therapist may play a special role in the diagnosis of mutism in the conditions of inclusive education, as he will probably be the first specialist who will receive a child who is not speaking or very taciturn at a public school. In the article, the diagnosis of selective mutism is associated with the differential diagnosis of shyness, which may not be treated as a disorder, but only a certain personality trait, but with incompetent pedagogical support in everyday educational practice it can lead to more serious difficulties, including logophobia and mutism. The diagnosis of mutism requires specialised therapeutic measures, but with the awareness of the differences in the situations of a shy child and a child with mutism, it is worth learning some supportive strategies that are useful in both cases.
