Let N be a set of natural numbers and Z be a set of integers. Let M₂(Z) denotes the set of all 2x2 matrices with integer entries.
We give necessary and suficient conditions for solvability of the matrix negative Pell equation
(P) X² - dY² = -I with d ∈ N
for nonsingular X,Y belonging to M₂(Z) and his generalization
(Pn) $∑_{i=1}^{n} X₂_{i} - d ∑_{i=1}^{n} Y²_{i} = -I$ with d ∈ N
for nonsingular $X_{i},Y_{i} ∈ M₂(Z)$, i=1,...,n.

Opis:
This paper concerns two notions of rank of fuzzy matrices: maximal column rank and column rank. We investigate the difference of them. We also characterize the linear operators which preserve the maximal column rank of fuzzy matrices. That is, a linear operator T preserves maximal column rank if and only if it has the form T(X) = UXV with some invertible fuzzy matrices U and V.

Opis:
The maximal column rank of an m by n matrix is the maximal number of the columns of A which are linearly independent. We compare the maximal column rank with rank of matrices over a nonbinary Boolean algebra. We also characterize the linear operators which preserve the maximal column ranks of matrices over nonbinary Boolean algebra.

Let A be a real symmetric matrix. If after we delete a row and a column of the same index, the nullity increases by one, we call that index a P-vertex of A. When A is an n × n singular acyclic matrix, it is known that the maximum number of P-vertices is n − 2. If T is the underlying tree of A, we will show that for any integer number k ∈ {0, 1, . . ., n − 2}, there is a (singular) matrix whose graph is T and with k P-vertices. We will provide illustrative examples.

Opis:
Given a graph G, its adjacency matrix A(G) and its diagonal matrix of vertex degrees D(G), consider the matrix Aα(G) = αD(G) + (1 − α)A(G), where α ∈ [0, 1). The Aα -spectrum of G is the multiset of eigenvalues of Aα(G) and these eigenvalues are the α-eigenvalues of G. A cluster in G is a pair of vertex subsets (C, S), where C is a set of cardinality |C| ≥ 2 of pairwise co-neighbor vertices sharing the same set S of |S| neighbors. Assuming that G is connected and it has a cluster (C, S), G(H) is obtained from G and an r-regular graph H of order |C| by identifying its vertices with the vertices in C, eigenvalues of Aα(G) and Aα(G(H)) are deduced and if Aα(H) is positive semidefinite, then the i-th eigenvalue of Aα(G(H)) is greater than or equal to i-th eigenvalue of Aα(G). These results are extended to graphs with several pairwise disjoint clusters (C1, S1), . . ., (Ck, Sk). As an application, the effect on the energy, α-Estrada index and α-index of a graph G with clusters when the edges of regular graphs are added to G are analyzed. Finally, the Aα-spectrum of the corona product G ◦ H of a connected graph G and a regular graph H is determined.

George Styan and I first met when he came to the University of Birmingham to study Mathematics. We both developed interests in Mathematical Statistics. Matrix theory is an essential component of such courses and we both excelled at it. Our paths have intersected on a number of occasions and George's insight and cooperation has been a great help in enabling me to carry out research in several areas. This article summarizes the value of George's presence and help in carrying out some interesting and complicated research projects.

Opis:
The Mₙ-matrix was defined by Mohan [21] who has shown a method of constructing (1,-1)-matrices and studied some of their properties. The (1,-1)-matrices were constructed and studied by Cohn [6], Ehrlich [9], Ehrlich and Zeller [10], and Wang [34]. But in this paper, while giving some resemblances of this matrix with a Hadamard matrix, and by naming it as an M-matrix, we show how to construct partially balanced incomplete block designs and some regular graphs by it. Two types of these M-matrices have been considered. Also we will make a mention of certain applications of these M-matrices in signal and communication processing, and network systems and end with some open problems.
