This paper presents an overview of some recent results concerning the emerging theory of minimax LQG control for uncertain systems with a relative entropy constraint uncertainty description. This is an important new robust control system design methodology providing minimax optimal performance in terms of a quadratic cost functional. The paper first considers some standard uncertainty descriptions to motivate the relative entropy constraint uncertainty description. The minimax LQG problem under consideration is further motivated by analysing the basic properties of relative entropy. The paper then presents a solution to a worst case control system performance problem which can be generalized to the minimax LQG problem. The solution to this minimax LQG control problem is found to be closely connected to the problem of risk-sensitive optimal control.

In this paper, sliding mode control is used to develop two passive fault tolerant controllers for an AscTec Pelican UAV quadrotor. In the first approach, a regular sliding mode controller (SMC) augmented with an integrator uses the robustness property of variable structure control to tolerate partial actuator faults. The second approach is a cascaded sliding mode controller with an inner and outer SMC loops. In this configuration, faults are tolerated in the fast inner loop controlling the velocity system. Tuning the controllers to find the optimal values of the sliding mode controller gains is made using the ecological systems algorithm (ESA), a biologically inspired stochastic search algorithm based on the natural equilibrium of animal species. The controllers are tested using SIMULINK in the presence of two different types of actuator faults, partial loss of motor power affecting all the motors at once, and partial loss of motor speed. Results of the quadrotor following a continuous path demonstrated the effectiveness of the controllers, which are able to tolerate a significant number of actuator faults despite the lack of hardware redundancy in the quadrotor system. Tuning the controller using a faulty system improves further its ability to afford more severe faults. Simulation results show that passive schemes reserve their important role in fault tolerant control and are complementary to active techniques.

In this paper, we consider the design of tracking controllers for linear MIMO systems described by an input-output model. The presence of known 'weak' interactions among SISO or MIMO subsystems may allow the designer to achieve objectives by using independent controllers of lower complexity than are necessary in general (control decentralization problem). Sufficient conditions for asymptotic tracking employing decentralized variable structure techniques are derived. The condition is shown to be closely related to (and in a sense, a time-domain counterpart of) dominance criteria used in frequency-domain techniques, as they have developed out of Rosenbrock's original diagonal dominance concept. The synthesis of a decentralized variable-structure controller for asymptotic tracking is illustrated for systems obeying some conditions on their nominal relative degrees.

This paper examines the inverse control problem of nonlinear systems with stable dynamics using a fuzzy modeling approach. Indeed, based on the ability of fuzzy systems to approximate any nonlinear mapping, the nonlinear system is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy system, which is then inverted for designing a fuzzy controller. As an application of the proposed inverse control methodology, two popular control structures, namely, feedback linearization and Nonlinear Internal Model Control (NIMC) are investigated. Moreover, the paper points out that, under some conditions, both of the control structures are equivalent and naturally implement a Smith predictor in the presence of time delays.

Opis:
In this paper the hybrid supervisory control architecture developed by Famularo et al. (2011) for constrained control systems is adopted with the aim to improve safety in aircraft operations when critical events like command saturations or unpredicted anomalies occur. The capabilities of a low-computational demanding predictive scheme for the supervision of non-linear dynamical systems subject to sudden switchings amongst operating conditions and time-varying constraints are exploited in the flight control systems framework. The strategy is based on command governor ideas and is tailored to jointly take into account time-varying set-points/constraints. Unpredictable anomalies in the nominal plant behaviour, whose models fall in the category of time-varying constraints, can also be tolerated by the control scheme. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, simulations both on a high altitude performance demonstrator unmanned aircraft with redundant control surfaces and the P92 general aviation aircraft are discussed.

Designing a tracking control system for an over-actuated dynamic positioning marine vessel in the case of insufficient information on environmental disturbances, hydrodynamic damping, Coriolis forces and vessel inertia characteristics is considered. The designed adaptive MIMO backstepping control law with control allocation is based on Lyapunov control theory for cascaded systems to guarantee stabilization of the marine vessel position and heading. Forces and torque computed from the adaptive control law are allocated to individual thrusters by employing the quadratic programming method in combination with the cascaded generalized inverse algorithm, the weighted least squares algorithm and the minimal least squares algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by simulations involving a redundant set of actuators. The evaluation criteria include energy consumption, robustness, as well accuracy of tracking during typical vessel operation.

In the paper, we discuss how to design a predictive controller capable of addressing a number of important issues ranging from nominal stability to the model identification/controller design interplay. Nominal stability is ensured by resorting to Constrained Receding Horizon Predictive Control. As for robust stability, the connections between the frequency weighting P-polynomial in the cost function and the achievable robustness against multiplicative uncertainty are investigated. Then, a two-step design procedure is proposed in order to enhance the closed-loop robustness and obtain nominal performances. A correlation technique is also proposed as a tool to estimate uncertainty bounds to be used in controller design. Finally, the control and identification procedures are put together to form an iterative identification/control design methodology. A simulation example is reported to illustrate the approach.

Opis:
The problem of fault tolerant control is studied from the behavioral point of view. In this mathematical framework, the concept of interconnection among the variables describing the system is a key point. The problem is that the behavior we intend to control is not known. Therefore, we are interested in designing a fault accommodation scheme for an unknown behavior through an appropriate behavioral interconnection. Here we deal simply with the trajectories that are generated by the system in real time. These trajectories determine the behavior of a system in various (faulty/healthy) modes. Based on the desired interconnected behavior, only the trajectories that obey certain laws are selected. These laws, representing the desired behavior, can indeed be achieved by a regular interconnection. Thus, when the trajectories do not belong to a certain desired behavior, it is considered to be due to the occurrence of a fault in the system. The vantage point is that the fault tolerant control problem now becomes completely a model-free scheme. Moreover, no explicit fault diagnosis module is required in our approach. The proposed fault tolerance mechanism is illustrated on an aircraft during the landing phase.

The EHMAC strategy can be used to robustly control open-loop stable non-minimum phase (possibly non-square) MIMO systems under very large model-plant mismatches. Robust EHMAC design is made straightforward by means of a separate selection of a single prediction horizon and an IMC filter parameter, which can be easily auto-tuned.

An event-triggered adaptive control algorithm is proposed for cooperative tracking control of high-order nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) with prescribed performance and full-state constraints. The algorithm combines dynamic surface technology and the backstepping recursive design method, with radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) used to approximate the unknown nonlinearity. The barrier Lyapunov function and finite-time stability theory are employed to prove that all agent states are semi-globally uniform and ultimately bounded, with the tracking error converging to a bounded neighborhood of zero in a finite time. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

An information based method for solving stochastic control problems with partial observation is proposed. First, information-theoretic lower bounds of the cost function are analysed. It is shown, under rather weak assumptions, that reduction in the expected cost with closed-loop control compared with the best open-loop strategy is upper bounded by a non-decreasing function of mutual information between control variables and the state trajectory. On the basis of this result, an information based control (IBC) method is developed. The main idea of IBC consists in replacing the original control task by a sequence of control problems that are relatively easy to solve and such that information about the system state is actively generated. Two examples of the IBC operation are given. It is shown that the method is able to find an optimal solution without using dynamic programming at least in these examples. Hence the computational complexity of IBC is substantially smaller than that of dynamic programming, which is the main advantage of the proposed method.

This paper presents some design approaches to hybrid control systems combining conventional control techniques with fuzzy logic and neural networks. Such a mixed implementation leads to a more effective control design with improved system performance and robustness. While conventional control allows different design objectives such as steady state and transient characteristics of the closed loop system to be specified, fuzzy logic and neural networks are integrated to overcome the problems with uncertainties in the plant parameters and structure encountered in the classical model-based design. Induction motors are characterised by complex, highly non-linear and time-varying dynamics and inaccessibility of some states and outputs for measurements, and hence can be considered as a challenging engineering problem. The advent of vector control techniques has partially solved induction motor control problems, because they are sensitive to drive parameter variations and performance may deteriorate if conventional controllers are used. Fuzzy logic and neural network-based controllers are considered as potential candidates for such an application. Three control approaches are developed and applied to adjust the speed of the drive system. The first control design combines the variable structure theory with the fuzzy logic concept. In the second approach neural networks are used in an internal model control structure. Finally, a fuzzy state feedback controller is developed based on the pole placement technique. A simulation study of these methods is presented. The effectiveness of these controllers is demonstrated for different operating conditions of the drive system.

Predictive control algorithms have been worked out mainly to control linear plants. There is a great demand to apply different control ideas to nonlinear systems. Using predictive control algorithms for nonlinear systems is a promising technique. Extended horizon one-step-ahead and long-range optimal predictive control algorithms are given here for the parametric Volterra model (which includes also the generalized Hammerstein model). A quadratic cost function is minimized which considers the quadratic deviations of the reference signal and the output signal at a future point (or points) beyond the dead time and also penalizes large control signal increments. For prediction of the output signal, a predictive model is applied which uses information about the input and output signals up to the current time. A predictive transformation of the nonlinear dynamic model is given. The incremental model is advantageous since the cost function contains the control increment and not the control signal itself. An incremental transformation of the predictive forms is also described. Sub-optimal solutions to the optimal control algorithms are discussed with different assumptions for the control signal during the control horizon. The effect of the different strategies and the effect of the tuning parameters is investigated through simulation examples.

A modification of digital controller algorithms, based on the introduction of a virtual reference value, which never exceeds active constraints in the actuator output is presented and investigated for some algorithms used in single-loop control systems. This idea, derived from virtual modification of a control error, can be used in digital control systems subjected to both magnitude and rate constraints. The modification is introduced in the form of on-line adaptation to the control task. Hence the design of optimal (in a specified sense) digital controller parameters can be separated from actuator constraints. The adaptation of the control algorithm (to actuator constraints) is performed by the transformation of the control error and is equivalent to the introduction of a new, virtual reference value for the control system. An application of this approach is presented through examples of three digital control algorithms: the PID algorithm, the dead-beat controller and the state space controller. In all cases, clear advantages of transients are observed, which yields some general conclusions to the problem of processing actuator constraints in control.
