Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to investigate surface waves in a non-homogeneous, isotropic, visco-elastic solid medium of n-th order including the time rate of strain. The theory of generalised surface waves has firstly been developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley, Rayleigh and Love type. The wave velocity equations have been obtained for different cases and are in well agreement with the corresponding classical result, when the effects of viscosity, temperature, magnetism as well as nonhomogeneity of the material medium are ignored.

Opis:
The effect of Hall currents and suspended dusty particles on the hydromagnetic stability of a compressible, electrically conducting Rivlin-Ericksen elastico viscous fluid in a porous medium is considered. Following the linearized stability theory and normal mode analysis the dispersion relation is obtained. For the case of stationary convection, Hall currents and suspended particles are found to have destabilizing effects whereas compressibility and magnetic field have stabilizing effects on the system. The medium permeability, however, has stabilizing and destabilizing effects on thermal instability in contrast to its destabilizing effect in the absence of the magnetic field. The critical Rayleigh numbers and the wave numbers of the associated disturbances for the onset of instability as stationary convection are obtained and the behavior of various parameters on critical thermal Rayleigh numbers are depicted graphically. The magnetic field, Hall currents and viscoelasticity parameter are found to introduce oscillatory modes in the systems, which did not exist in the absence of these parameters.

Opis:
A layer of a Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid heated and soluted from below in the presence of compressibility and suspended particles (fine dust) effect is considered. For stationary convection, the Rivlin- Ericksen, elastico-viscous fluid behaves like a Newtonian fluid. The oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of a stable solute gradient, suspended particles destabilize the system whereas the stable solute gradient has a stabilizing effect on the system and the effect of compressibility is to postpone the onset of thermosolutal convection. The stable solute gradient and compressibility postpone the onset of convection, whereas the suspended particles hasten the onset of convection. The stable solute gradient introduces oscillatory modes in the systems which were non-existent in its absence.

Opis:
In this paper, we study the onset of cellular convection in a horizontal fluid layer heated from below, with a free-slip boundary condition at the bottom when the driving mechanism is surface tension at the upper free surface, in the light of the modified analysis of Banerjee et al. (Jour. Math. & Phys. Sci., 1983, 17, 603). This leads to a formulation of the problem which depends upon whether the liquid layer is relatively hotter or cooler. It is found that the phenomenon of surface tension driven instability problems should not only depend upon the Marangoni number which is proportional to the maintained temperature differences across the layer but also upon another parameter that arises due to variation in the specific heat at constant volume on account of the variations in temperature. Numerical results are obtained for the problem wherein the lower free boundary is perfectly thermally conducting.

Opis:
Three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out with the ABAQUS/explicit finite element code to study the influence of target boundary conditions on its ballistic limit. 1mm thick 1100-H12 aluminum target of 255 mm span diameter was hit by 19 mm diameter and 50.8 mm length blunt nosed projectile. The mass of the projectile was kept as 52.5 gm. The boundary condition effects on the ballistic limit were investigated by varying the target periphery boundary condition as fully clamped and partially clamped target (75%, 50% and 25%) subjected to projectile impact. The energy absorption and ballistic limit of the target was found to be significantly affected by the boundary conditions. Some of the finite element analysis results were compared with experimental and numerical results reported in international literature and a good agreement between the two was found.
