The present article studies Ælfric of Eynsham’s homily based on the biblical books of Maccabees. It uses Barbara H. Rosenwein’s concept of an “emotional community” to elucidate Ælfric’s treatment of anger and violence in the process of adapting the biblical source in his Old English homily. His presentation and characterisation of characters draws upon the hagiographic technique of polarisation. He makes vivid contrast between fury-driven persecutors and the just Hebrew, whose conduct is a commendable example of self-master over emotion. The argument of the article is that Ælfric handles his representation of anger and violence to enhance the figurative, tropolotical exposition of the homily.

The article juxtaposes representations of mothers and daughters in selected African American novels that feature near-white female protagonists: W. W. Brown’s Clotel, Or the President’s Daughter (1853), Frances E. W. Harper’s Iola Leroy (1892), Charles Chesnutt’s The House behind the Cedars (1900), and Pauline Hopkins’s Hagar’s Daughter (1902). It explores the matrilineal opposition through a formalist close analysis of the melodramatic poetics of the texts and examines the political signifi cance of such aesthetic choices. The novels expose the American history of interracial relations through their foregrounding of the mulatta protagonists and numerous scenes of anagnorisis of their multiracial identities. Simultaneously, their “erotics of politics” rewards the choice of a black spouse and thus celebrates the emergence of the self-determined black community.

This paper examines the characteristics of news translation during wars and conflicts. There is limited research available concerning the issues of English-Arabic news translation, especially during conflicts. Based on an analysis of 11 CNN news headlines and Al-Jazeera parallel translations during the 2003 Iraq War, this study discusses the mechanics of news translation and interpretation and the strategies and challenges involved. Particularly, the paper explores news translation in the context of global information flows across the boundaries of space, language and culture. Building on existing research on news translation, and employing critical discourse and framing analyses, the study shows how news coverage of the Iraq War was framed to serve the competing narratives of war chroniclers as active participants in the conflict.

The paper discusses the problem of musical rhetoric in the Renaissance and the Baroque. In the 16th century, the imitative qualities of music were developed through the concept of imitazione della natura. The relationship between word and music stabilized. Representation was a major function and was inspired by the ancient concept of merging words, harmony, and rhythm. In ancient times, music had become a key to metaphysics and an important educational tool. Thus, specific compositions were related directly to a specific state of the soul, characters and emotions. The author presents the aforementioned concept in later times, i.e. in the Renaissance, when not only theorists but also composers, performers and listeners assigned musical-rhetorical figures to specific meanings. The paper extensively discusses examples of the musical application of different musical-rhetorical figures and how they are used. The author underlines, however, that despite the universalization of musical language, the rhetorical system in music is highly diverse and is subject to individual contextual interpretations.

This article analyses the British fi lm Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle. The film has created hype all over the world by supposedly showing a “true India,” thus generating a number of negative responses, mainly from India. The article employs postcolonial criticism in analysing particular visual and narrative aspects of the fi lm. As the research revealed, despite Slumdog Millionaire’s attempts to recreate the authentic voice of India by employing hybrid cinematic aesthetics, the film remains an ambiguous project whose certain visual and narrative strategies contribute to the construction, exploitation and dissemination of exotic discourses and (neo)colonial relics.

Este artículo analiza las representaciones sociales que difundió la prensa escrita de las prime-ras mujeres que ocuparon curules en la Asamblea Legislativa de Costa Rica. La elección de esas diputadas introdujo un cambio en los actores políticos y constituyó un reto para los me-dios de comunicación al encontrar a nuevas protagonistas en el escenario político. La estrate-gia metodológica de este trabajo incluye el análisis de contenido cuantitativo y el análisis críti-co del discurso. El corpus lo conforman crónicas, entrevistas, noticias y editoriales que fueron publicados en La República y Diario de Costa Rica durante el lustro 1953-1958. Se halló una escasa representación mediática de las legisladoras producto de la convergencia de varios fac-tores. Por un lado, ese período se caracterizó por una intensa efervescencia política que se trasladó a la producción periodística. En la prensa se buscaba distinguir a los buenos hombres de los malos hombres. Esa práctica situó a los varones como actores centrales; las diputadas fueron citadas si coincidían con la línea editorial del medio, de lo contrario, hubo silencios y omisiones. Además del uso del genérico masculino, la descripción privilegió la dicotomía “nosotros-ellos”. Se hallaron estereotipos, creencias, opiniones, actitudes e ideologías de gé-nero. Hubo apreciaciones cargadas de subjetividad, empleo de adjetivos elogiosos que perpe-tuaron atributos estereotipados. Se reprodujeron roles asociados a la maternidad y se las des-cribió en relación con vínculos familiares, como madres y esposas.
This paper analyzes the social representations disseminated by the newspapers about the first women who occupied seats in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. The election of three deputies printed a change in the political actors and constituted a challenge for the media that found new protagonists in the political scene. The methodological approach used the Quantita-tive content analysis and the critical analysis of discourse. Stereotypes, beliefs, opinions, atti-tudes and gender ideologies were found. The corpus is made up of chronicles, interviews, news and editorials that were published in La República and Diario de Costa Rica, during the lustrum 1953-1958. The sparse media representation of the deputies was due to several fac-tors: the 1950s inherited the political tension that triggered the Civil War of 1948, consequent-ly, the description of the events privileged the dichotomy "we-them" (Van Dijk, 1992), the in-tention was to distinguish good men from bad men, according to the optic of the newspaper. This practice placed men as central actors; the women deputies were cited if they coincided with the editorial line of the media, otherwise there were silences and omissions. In addition to the use of the male generic, there were appreciations loaded with subjectivity, the use of com-plimentary adjectives perpetuated stereotyped attributes. Roles associated with motherhood were reproduced, described in relation to family ties, such as mothers and wives.

The distribution of sC clusters and their interactions with phonological rules point to a unique status of such consonant sequences, which opens the possibility of ascribing more than one representation to them. The primary goal of this article is to establish the most suitable representation of sC clusters, understood in the narrow sense as /s/ plus a stop cluster: /sk/, /st/ and /sp/ only, from among the theoretically possible variants generated by the autosegmental theory of the syllable. The differing representations display various compliance with phonotactic generalisations and phonological behaviour of the clusters in question in English. The article is organised as follows. Section 1 introduces background information. Section 2 examines the logically possible two-segment structures as ensuing from the application of the Syllable Structure Algorithm. Section 3 presents the Branching Onset model and its variants. Section 4 considers the specific predictions made by the Appendix model. Section 5 offers conclusions and points to the most appropriate bisegmental representation.

The text presents selected issues concerning parties’ obligatory professional representation in Polish cassation proceedings. It depicts the present regulation against a historical and comparative background. As its shape kept evolving over the years, its premises have been regularly revisited in the course of a doctrinal discussion. In recent times especially one question came to prominence. It touches upon an idea to introduce a special group of legal representatives who would be endowed with an exclusive right to act in the proceedings before the Supreme Court. The text recreates historical background of this institution in the Polish law and juxtaposes it with the present state, taking into account the nature of cassation proceedings, as well as the prospects of introducing such a legal specialisation in the future.

The article deals with the graphic design of the “Ukrainian Calendar” – an annual publication that was issued by the Ukrainian community in Poland in the period 1957–1988. Different communication and stylistic constructions were designed to represent national identity in a number of ways. Folk art patterns would illustrate a rich tradition, adding a ‘peasant’ connotation at the same time. Traditional costumes from Central Ukraine, Cossack in particular, would communicate the idea of national unity. Graphic quotations from manuscripts and early printed books as well as historical forms of the Cyrillic alphabet would describe Ukraine’s great history and cultural development through the centuries. Motifs from Kyiv Rus and Cossack art would remind viewers of the tradition of state-building. Concerning the overall style of the publication, there were symmetrically balanced and pattern-decorated layouts as well as the dynamic positioning of stylized elements. Several issues of the Calendar demonstrate attempts to modernize the national image. With ‘op-art’, ‘pop-art’ and ‘international style’ designs they shape Ukrainian identity as being contemporary and global. Generally, the publication illustrates the tensions between the traditional and modern; it is also a ‘hybrid’ between Diaspora and Soviet periodicals of the time.

The complex system of decision-making in the Council of the European Union has many specific features which require explanation. This article presents a constructivist approach to this problem and focuses on the influence of socialisation. First, it explains why inquiry into the decision-making in the Council from the constructivist perspective is justified and then proposes the use of process-tracing, a method that allows to trace causal mechanisms linking the effects of socialisation and the characteristics of decision-making in the Council. Second, a typology of socialisation mechanisms and effects is presented. The third section is an attempt to use the inductive variety of process-tracing in order to explain certain qualities of decision-making in the Council. The final section outlines the theory-oriented approach to process-tracing, which could follow from the presented conceptualisation and explains the need to include the constitutive aspects of socialisation within the causal framework of process-tracing research.

The text discusses the problem of mandatory representation by a lawyer as one of the legal solutions that are crucial for access to courts. The starting point for the author’s deliberations is the analysis of the institution of legal aid of a professional representative in litigation, which – along with other constructions – constitutes a guarantee of effective implementation of the right to court in civil matters. Against the background of these considerations, the author presents the construction of mandatory representation by a lawyer in the Polish legal system, with particular emphasis on its subjective and objective scope. These considerations are complemented by de lege ferenda conclusions, relating, among other things, to projects considered in the Polish doctrine concerning the extension of the scope of application of mandatory representation to proceedings before the court of second instance.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię rosnącej autorefleksyjności zauważalnej pod koniec XIX w. w literaturze łotewskiej poprzez porównanie trzech przykładowych utworów, przedstawionych w kontekście historycznym: powieści Līduma dūmos (W dymach karczowiska, 1899) łotewskiego autora Andrievsa Niedry i dwóch nowel – Der Schimmelreiter (Jeździec na siwym koniu, 1888) niemieckiego pisarza Theodora Storma i Nāves ēnā (W cieniu śmierci, 1899) łotewskiego autora Rūdolfsa Blaumanisa. Każdy z wymienionych tekstów został poddany analizie z uwzględnieniem intencji autorów, gatunku oraz cech charakterystycznych narracji, jak również ich pozycji w procesie literackim. Autor położył szczególny nacisk na genezę współczesnej literatury łotewskiej, poruszył również tematykę transferu kulturowego. Analiza porównawcza poprzedza teoretyczną dyskusję o fin-de-siècle’u w odniesieniu do trendów w literaturze oraz specyfiki ich występowania w różnych kontekstach. Artykuł omawia kwestie dotyczące literackiego przedstawiania poszczególnych terytoriów fizycznych, jak również wykorzystania pamięci indywidualnej i zbiorowej w celu wykazania wpływu różnic kolonialnych na omawiane teksty. Analizując powieść Andrievsa Niedry zauważyć można jego dążenie do stworzenia powieści w nowoczesnym, europejskim stylu. Autor śledzi związki między arystokratyczną klasą niemiecką i jej odpowiednikiem – powstającą łotewską klasą średnią. Autor otwarcie manifestuje swoje ideologiczne przekonania dotyczące tzw. nowego nacjonalizmu, który jest podstawą konfliktów przedstawionych w powieści. Psychologiczne cechy protagonistów są podporządkowane temu głównemu celowi. Niedra umieszcza swoje postacie na tle wiejskich i miejskich krajobrazów Łotwy końca XIX w.; stosuje utarte konwencje dziewiętnastowiecznej powieści europejskiej, zwłaszcza tradycji Bildungsroman, która służy ukazaniu potencjalnej siły rodzącej się klasy łotewskich przemysłowców i literatów. Istnieje wiele podobieństw między nowelą Storma i utworem Niedry. Autor opisuje lokalne życie w okolicy swojego rodzinnego miasta Husum w niemieckim regionie Szlezwik- Holsztyn. Bohater jego noweli, Hauke Haien, charakteryzujący się silnym charakterem oraz idealistycznymi aspiracjami, wymyślił nowatorską groblę, mogącą poprawić jakość życia lokalnej społeczności. W opisywaniu głównych bohaterów można zauważyć wiele podobieństw do powieści Andrievsa Niedry. Jednakże w noweli Storma widoczne jest bardziej sceptyczne podejście do możliwości poszczególnych jednostek w osiąganiu celów tylko dzięki silnej woli. Przedstawiająca historyczne tło ciągłej walki człowieka z Morzem Północnym nowela jest zarówno powodem do dumy dla jej autora i jego zwolenników, jak i historycznie ważną manifestacją rosnącej pewności siebie odradzającego się narodu. Porównując nowelę Rudolfa Blaumanisa W cieniu śmierci z dwoma pierwszymi tekstami, jasno widać wątpliwości i poczucie niepewności, jakie towarzyszyły autorowi w pojmowaniu odrębności narodu łotewskiego. Mistrzowskie przedstawienie grupy rybaków, którzy znaleźli się na tafli lodu na otwartym morzu, może być uznane za metaforyczny portret kruchej egzystencji grup podrzędnych w społeczeństwie podzielonym kolonialnie. Blaumanis wykorzystuje poetyckie cechy noweli, by w nowatorski sposób przedstawić analizę wewnętrznego przeżywania fin-de-siècle’u przez mieszkańców Łotwy.

En el presente artículo se efectúa un análisis de la situación jurídica de los pueblos indígenas en Venezuela. En los años 90., la llamada “década de los pueblos indígenas”, aparecieron nuevas formas legales e institucionales en cuanto a la representación y participación de las comunidades indígenas en el marco del funcionamiento de los órganos e instituciones estatales. En la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, garantizados por la Constitución de 1999 y otras leyes promulgadas en los años 2001-2009, se basan en la definición de la nación multiétnica y multicultural. Así pues, está bien fundada la pregunta si la pertenencia a un grupo étnico du-rante la transformación sistémica puede convertirse en el capital político. Por lo tanto, se propone reflexionar sobre las soluciones jurídicas e institucionales así como también los dilemas que aparecen en relación con la representación y participación. Para conseguir los objetivos propuestos se analiza la posición de los pueblos indígenas sobre la base de las normas jurídicas de los años 1999-2009, el alcance y las formas de la representación política y participación de la población indígena en el proceso de la transformación sistémica. Propongo la tesis de que la participación de los pueblos indígenas venezolanos en la actividad del Estado y la co-responsabilidad para su funcionamiento, respetando la soberanía y autonomía de los indios, están con-dicionadas por la evolución del proyecto político del gobierno de Hugo Chávez.
This article analyzes the legal status of indigenous peoples in Venezuela. From the beginning of the 90's, the so-called “Decade of Indigenous Peoples”, new legal and institutional forms of representation and participation of indigenous population were created within the framework of state entities and institutions. In the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela the rights guaranteed to indigenous peoples by the Constitution of 1999 and other laws promulgated in the years 2001-2009 are based on the definition of a multi-ethnic and multicultural nation. Thus, there arises a question whether belonging to an ethnic group has become political capital during the transformation of the political system. Therefore, the proposal is to reflect upon the implemented legal and institutional solutions as well as the dilemmas that arise in the area of representation and participation. In order to achieve the proposed goals the author analyzes the position of in-digenous peoples on the basis of the legal regulations from the years 1999-2009, as well as the scope and forms of political representation and participation of indigenous population in the process of the political system transformation. In my opinion the parti-cipation of Venezuelan indigenous peoples in the activity of the State and their co-responsibility for its functioning, as well as respecting sovereignty and autonomy of Native Americans, are conditioned by the evolution of the Hugo Chávez government's political project.

La relación entre humor y feminismo ha sido siempre compleja. Especialmente, por el rol que ha jugado históricamente el humor en la reproducción de estereotipos de género y la contribu-ción a la subordinación de las mujeres tanto en el espacio doméstico como en la esfera pública. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo, mediante el humor gráfico, se representa a las mujeres, y sus luchas por alcanzar el derecho al sufragio. Para ello se realiza un análisis mul-timodal que articula texto escrito y visual para identificar las representaciones de las mujeres como grupos, las mujeres de forma individual, las demandas de derechos de estas mujeres y las opiniones sociales al respecto y que se representan en el discurso del humor gráfico en la prensa costarricense, entre 1947 y 1953. Para ello se realiza un análisis, con enfoque cualitativo, de caricaturas publicadas en los sema-narios El Trapiche y La Semana Cómica, y en el Diario de Costa Rica, en el período antes señalado. Los criterios de selección incluyen: que las mujeres sean sujetos en las imágenes, que se evidencie rasgos de participación política y que, además, de imagen, la caricatura con-tenga texto, que permita realizar un contraste entre lenguaje hablado y escrito. Para el análisis se emplean elementos de Análisis Multimodal del Discurso. Uno de los resultados principales es, además de la reproducción de estereotipos acerca de la participación política de las mujeres, señalar cómo se reproducen las nociones dicotómicas de lo que es ser mujer y el peligro que estas representan para los hombres como grupo político.
The connection between feminism and humor have always been at least complicated because of the role played by humor in the reproduction of gender stereotypes and its contribution to the subordination of women, both in the domestic space and the public sphere. This paper aims to analyze how, through graphic humor, women are represented, and their struggles to achieve the right to suffrage through the use of critical analysis of multimodal dis-course in order to identify the representations of women as groups, women individually, the demands of women’s rights in three Costa Rican papers, between 1947 and 1953: El Trapiche and La Semana Cómica, and Diario de Costa Rica. One of the main results is, in addition to the reproduction of stereotypes about the political participation of women and women in general, and how those stereotypes are constructed through the language of common sense and male gaze.
