The aim of this paper is to correct a historical error, one that I will argue is at the heart of the contemporary feminist movement: the ancient claim, grounded in a flawed understanding of the reproductive act, that woman is inferior to man. I will show that the lineage of this can be traced as far back as the pre-Socratic philosophers, finally finding its earliest concrete expression in a claim most have either dismissed, forgotten, or never heard: Aristotle’s argument that women are merely “malformed males” and are therefore “inferior to man”. The theory found support in the first century with a historical interpretation of Genesis 2:18-23, traceable in particular to the Hellenistic Jewish philosopher, Philo (BC 13-AD 54). Philo’s own theory about woman echoed that of Aristotle’s; his legacy includes the vague feeling that Scripture itself declares that, since woman is created after man, she is necessarily subservient to him. She becomes, as it were, the “second sex”. The combination of Aristotle and Philo proved too persuasive even for the mind of St. Thomas Aquinas and the theory accelerated and then spread through the university system inaugurated during the Middle Ages, subsequently informing the social structures and norms of Western civilization, going mostly unchallenged throughout human history, silently persisting even into the present time. This error represents what can be called a chronic “wound” in our intellectual tradition. And it is a wound that must be healed. I argue that the antidote is to correct this account and that it can be defeated on its own terms. Through the lens of Hebraic and Aristotelian-Thomistic anthropology, and building on the insights of St. John Paul II, I provide a robust, philosophically and theologically grounded account of man and woman from within the Catholic exegetical tradition, showing that man and woman are both equally human, equally endowed with intellect, will, and freedom while at the same time reflecting two different ways of being in the world.

The reception of second-wave feminist guidelines in the Brazilian artistic system has been a recurring theme of inquiry in feminist historiography because of its peculiarity: a country that propagated its international image as a place of delight and sexual experience, but crystallised in conservative and colonial values, in conjunction with a highly experimental artistic scene, but under the yoke of violence from a civil-military dictatorship. To show what kind of relationship was established between some of the cultural agents of the period and the feminist agenda that arrived in the Brazilian scene, this essay takes some case studies that point out the strategies and negotiations regarding feminism, even though those concerned were not militants.

This article begins by exploring the personal experiences and theoretical foundations that led to the creation of a permanent new CEISAL research team. Steered by the feminist development theory and adopting a Marxist methodolo-gy it soon became a draw for professionals of many disciplines and from several con-tinents, but continues to consist largely of women. The article goes on to analyze how, for almost a decade, this Working Group has projected its findings through a multi-tude of articles, books, journals, symposia, congresses, courses, documentaries, radio and television broadcasts, and a range of other activities it has developed, and also by collaborating with a number of institutions both nationally and internationally which share common goals.

The article deals with demands made upon women about their appearance in the 21st century, comments made by, and about, women and the ways in which they dress. That is the suggestion that there is a greater plurality about dress in the contemporary world than it was in the world of our grandmothers. But in place of the former strictures there are others: demands about youth and youthfulness, of forms of self association either for or against class and racialised others, of representing a human, dressed, version, of the “new”. All represent aspirations for identifying – or not – the self through dress. The question of who do we want to look like is one that is unavoidable.

The article deals with the question concerning legal responses to sexual harassment – whether those responses should be relentless in punishing and stigmatizing perpetrators and banishing them from positions where they can offend further, or whether there should be room for rehabilitating or even forgiving at least those offenders whose abusive behavior is not violent or serial. On the one hand, the importance of achieving justice and equality for women is critical. On the other hand, one may recognize the possibility of repentance and restoration of both victim and offender to society. The modern restorative justice movement, informed by Christian theology, suggests that alternative dispute resolution mechanisms should not only ensure that victims receive appropriate restoration for the harm they have suffered, but also try to restore perpetrators who accept responsibility for their offenses back into the community. It seems that practiced in the right cases, restorative justice may turn the disempowerment and fearful, sometimes guilty in-turning that victims may experience in adjudicative processes, into a freedom of giving beyond justice, and they may move the self-justificatory shame of a perpetrator into true repentance and reparatory action. At least, restorative justice may push them toward a relational dynamic that is healthier for both whether they must necessarily encounter each other in the future or free themselves from the hurt of the past.

The article is devoted to the works of Emma Tennant, an English writer, the author of, inter alia, the continuation of Sense and Sensibility, Emma, as well as Pride and Prejudice. A characteristic feature of Tennant’s writing was the ability to give new meanings to the texts and myths of the popular culture – so she did with the story of Elinor and Marianne, or Sylvia Plath, to whom she devoted one of her better texts. The article, based on the example of Emma Tennant’s writing, focuses on the issues of the strategy of creating literature as rewriting and functioning of feminist ideas in the modern literature.

Departing from the traditional representations of the colonial past and its aftermath, speculative fiction emerges as a new important trend in the North American Indigenous literary landscape, allowing Native writers to represent decolonial futures. This article focuses on the representations of the future offered by two recent Indigenous speculative novels: Louise Erdrich’s Future Home of the Living God (2017) and Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning (2018), in the context of their decolonial potential. The analysis of the selected literary texts pays special attention to the status of women and its revision, as well as to the re-narrativization of space in the face of the anthropogenic climate change, and their significance to Indigenous decolonial project. In order to facilitate the discussion of the Indigenous speculative novels, the article refers to recent theories in Native American studies concerning Indigenous futurism, Native dystopia, and definitions of decolonization.

Making recourse to Virginia Woolf’s “Professions for Women” (1931), I have studied the manner in which F.D. Bridges criticizes the patriarchal representations of Victorian women in her Journal of a Lady’s Travels Round the World (1883). In her text, she not only accounts for her experiences of travel in foreign countries but also inserts a discourse that lies counter to male definitions of women’s roles as “household angels,” confined in the domestic space and deprived of power. With the strength she demonstrates through her experiences of travel, she criticizes the fact that women are considered to be ‘the weaker sex.’ She also cultivates a quest for knowledge so as to carve her place in the ‘public sphere’ of knowledge and power and to criticize the practice of representing women as uneducated and ignorant. Last but not least, she highlights the degraded condition of the foreign women in an attempt to call for a universal enfranchisement of women abroad and in her country. All the three elements allow Bridges to fight against the “phantom” of the “angel in the house,” which, according to Woolf, needed to be “killed” in order for a woman to impose her authorship.

According to one of the famous foundresses of the French Federation of Eclaireuses (FFE), Marguerite Walther, it had to a be a female movement where “any little French girl would be comfortable” – comfortable to learn about moral values and about freedom. The FFE was very successful during the 1930s, achieving a high number of enrolments which were maintained after World War II. But the 1960s resulted in some fatal consequences for the FFE due to several reasons. There were financial problems, personality clashes, changes of attitude, and, eventually, co-education. Nevertheless, undertaking the analysis ofthe impact ofthe Eclaireuses’ movement one may clearly see its contribution to women’s empowerment in France. The question is to determine the particularities of this kind of feminism and how the women participating in the movement became more engaged in civil society.

The “city novel” was an essentially 19th-century phenomenon. By the time Scottish writers had belatedly addressed themselves to this genre, the Bildungsroman model of urban fiction (the transplanted “Young Man from the Provinces”) had given way to modernism and to a realism more magical than literal. This article discusses fictions which reflect Scotland’s ethnic mix and multiple identities, i.e. the country’s accommodation (or otherwise) of Irish, Jewish, Polish and Asian incomers: Patrick MacGill’s The Rat-Pit (1915), J. David Simons’s The Liberation of Celia Kahn (2011/2014), Suhayl Saadi’s The Burning Mirror (2001), and Fred Urquhart’s Jezebel’s Dust (1951).

In July 2017, some American scholars accused alt-right groups of appropriating Jane Austen’s works for extreme-right propaganda. How could Austen’s texts – an author associated with the beginnings of feminism – be used by blatant misogynists? This clash of perceptions reveals a dispute between Austen’s broad reception as classically romantic romances and a whole range of narrow theoretical academic readings. In the analysis of this dispute, the paper outlines long-lasting threads of Austen’s interpretation in AngloAmerican culture, whose ideological reconstruction of the last few decades clashes with a nostalgia for imperial order.

This article explores Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911) as a “hybrid” text and an example of “exploratory fiction.” Of primary interest is the parallel between Mary’s growth and the garden’s rehabilitation. Through Mary Lennox, arguably Burnett’s most complex fictional child, the novel challenges traditional patriarchal values with a depiction of female-based power dynamics. The novel makes a significant contribution to the shift in the way the female and the child was stereotypically portrayed in literature before the twentieth century.

Contemporary (Re)interpretation of Jane Austen’s Novels – about Looking for Freedom is a comparative study of the works of the author of Sense and Sensibility and the British series Taboo. As the main aim of paper the author took the search for analogies in these, far and totally different, as it may seems, texts of culture. Naming after Carrie Vaughn the works of Miss Austen as the “universe mirrors”, the author drew the attention to the modern “reflections” of Austen’s characters (anti-heroes, look-alikes) and today’s reinterpretation of the 19th century. For the palimpsest reading of the Austen’s novel she used the tools of the feminist criticism and the postcolonial theory. It allowed her to observe the femininemasculine relations, the relations based on a master-servant pattern, and, at the end, to analyse the political, social, cultural image of the coloniser and the colonised, which has been made by the colonial regime at that time. The author of the article put these two discourses together in order to prove that the rights of the 19th century wife were limited to those of a slave from the Dark Continent.
