Opis:
While exploring the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in Upper Silesia, the author ponders the following problems: 1) the impact of Katolik [Catholic], a newspaper written in Polish, on the preparation of recipients to the reading of the novels; 2) the influence of the message contained in the novels (the so called case of von Olszewski’s testament); and 3) artistic inspirations and ideological polemics with Sienkiewicz’s message (Jan Kupiec from Łąka). The paper argues that the reception of Sienkiewicz’s works by individual readers brought up in foreign cultural context can be remoulded not only into symbols of the revival of past familial connections with the motherland but can also become an origin of the fascination with the very phenomenon of national identity restitution.

Opis:
In the review article, the author writes about Walentyna Sobol’s book Oleksandr Kositz and his diary “With a song around the world”. Prof. Sobol prepared a Polish edition of Oleksandr Kositz’s diary, published for the first time in Canada in the 1950s and then in the 1970s after the death of this composer, writer, and ethnographer, providing it with an introduction, comprehensive footnotes, an extensive bibliography, and an unknown iconographic material – she has, therefore, carried out work far exceeding the scope of the duties of a scientific editor, which is the role she is performing here. This pioneering, in our country, publication, which will surely interest researchers in culture studies, musicologists, literary scholars, as well as ordinary readers who like to listen to Ukrainian songs, was preceded by a research stay in the archives of Oleksandr and Tetiana Kositz at the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centere in Winnipeg (Canada), where Oleksandr Kositz (1875–1944) spent the last years of his life and Professor Sobol – in 2015 – several months of her scientific internship.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the study of value systems which determine the sacred dimension of the socio-cultural experience of the people. Sacramental is considered not in the religious context, but as the highest value that lies outside the understanding. Sacramental is an indicator of the state of culture. The change in the social environment, ideological orientations (which is inherent to immigrants at one time or another) causes a change in sacred values. It is proved that, having fallen into an inocultural environment, a person strives to preserve their national identity, which helps to get „rooted” in the new place. It also provides preserving their unique image in the alien socio-cultural environment and guarantees a sense of security, stability, cultural uprooting. In the works of Canadian authors of Ukrainian origin, the sacred space of the individual’s personal existence is determined by the higher spiritual values created by his own people; and hence – is formed due to the sensation of religious representations, the fatherland’s land of Ukraine, the native language, elements of national culture and history, common national myths, historical memory.

Opis:
The paper raises the question of the Bible’s reception in modern Bulgarian literature and literary studies in the perspective of postsecular thought. The main question is interpreted with relation to the place of the Bible in the Orthodox cultural context, as well as the well-established autostereotype of Bulgarian literature as reflecting the pragmatism and religious indifference of Bulgarians. Focusing on the case of Nikolay Raynov’s (1889–1954) blasphemous novel Between desert and life (1919) and the discussion on Pencho Slaveykov’s (1866–1912) ‘religiosity’, the paper reveals the problems with both the notion of ‘religious’ within the framework of modernity and the pressing issue of the Bulgarians’ (ir)religiosity from the point of view of national identity. In this context, the question of how Bulgarian literary studies are bound by the secularization narrative manifests itself as fundamental. The history of the interpretation of the ‘religious’ in literature seems to be a very good indicator of the Bulgarian path to modernity.

Opis:
The article shows that archaic language is one of the components and methods of the detection of historical memory of Ukrainians. The analysis of the use of such elements in Old Ukrainian literary language of the 14-18th centuries., in Ukrainian literary language of the 19-20th centuries and in modern Ukrainian dialects has proved “Ukrainianness” of some archaic elements of the Ukrainian language, which are perceived by the language awareness of the modern Ukrainian as elements of the Russian language rather than the elements of its national identity in the diachronic dimension, as these words do exist in the modern Russian literary language, while in the New Ukrainian literary language they are replaced by other lexemes. It is shown that such archaisms in the language awareness of educated Ukrainians, including writers, acquire additional connotations and update their historical memory.

Opis:
The article represents an attempt to reflect on the possible causes of a positive reception in Bulgaria for the painting entitled The Batak Massacre (1892) by a Polish artist, Antoni Piotrowski. This work is considered one of the most eloquent visualizations of the traumatic events of significance to Bulgarians that took place during the so-called anti-Turkish April uprising in 1876. Due to the entanglement of circumstances the massacre in Batak has grown to the status of a national myth. The artist, well acquainted with the current situation in the Balkans (which is documented in his autobiography), could not have, however, been fully aware of the semantic potential of the associations invoked by his painting. The topos of the “river of blood”, placed at the centre of attention, interpreted by Piotrowski in a manner differing from that in Southern Slavic folklore or Bulgarian literature, becomes the starting point for the author’s reflections on the repertoire of associations that this work could invoke in the recipient “initiated” into the meanders of their own culture, as was Ivan Vazov, the writer and apologist for the painting. The suggested research approach can be put in the realm of a particular imagology based on the reconstruction of possible strategies to negotiate meanings in intercultural relations.
