Opis:
The fantastical and devilish qualities of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov created a need for the adequate means of expression. Therefore, the phraseological units are the most representative group, as they belong to the more colloquial part of language, and have a more familiar stylistic tone. The units with the words “chort” or “devil” are the most significant, therefore they were analysed in depth from the point of view of the translation theory. To exemplify the aforementioned phenomenon, the author refers to two sources: the canonical translation of The Master and Margarita by Irena Lewandowska and Witold Dąbrowski, which is still present in the consciousness of the Polish reader, and the newer version authored by Andrzej Drawicz. The comparative analysis of the selected material indicates that the authors of both translations preferred to use the phraseological units which differed in structure or the lexical composition from their Russian counterparts. However, the juxtaposed “translation equivalents” indicate the similarities in which Polish and Russian language capture our reality.

Opis:
Joseph Conrad’s language has been subject to various analyses regarding its uniqueness stemming from the writer’s trilingualism. Scholars have traced diverse influences from the French and Polish languages in this writer’s artistic output. Nevertheless, the effects of such influences are not thoroughly discussed. This article attempts to take a critical look at the outcomes deriving from the appearance of phrases which may be classified as Polonisms or pseudo-Polonisms in two short stories Amy Foster and Prince Roman and their translations into Polish. In the former story, untypical phrasings which may have been calqued from Polish serve to emphasise the alienation of the character of Yanko, in the latter, expressions which are generally common for both English and Polish highlight both the distinctiveness of Polish culture and its affinity with the European cultural setting. Unfortunately, in the translations into the language from which such linguistic or cultural concepts originated, such effects are much less distinctive.

Opis:
Clarification is one of the textual phenomena enumerated by Antoine Berman as deforming tendencies in translation. It is best observable when the target text turns what was ambiguous in the original into more specific. This need to clarify the original often stems from systemic differences between languages. However, on numerous occasions the movement from the original ‘indefinite’ into the definite in the translation results from a subjective decision taken by the translator, who in fact has proper linguistic means at his disposal to retain the original level of indeterminacy. In the case of a literary work such a tendency may influence all its levels, especially the interpretative possibilities, as seen in two Polish translations of E.A. Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, by Bolesław Leśmian and Stanisław Wyrzykowski. By discussing descriptions of the fictional space and the references to the Usher siblings, this article indicates to what extent clarifying lexical choices impact on the atmosphere of the work, consistency of the fictional world, suspense and the stance of the narrator.

One of the markers of Bruno Schulz’s style is the simile. It plays two roles in the poetic prose of the author: on the one hand, it confronts two phenomena in a concise and conventional manner; on the other, it compares, quite unexpectedly, two events, living creatures or objects, which seem to have nothing in common. In this article I analyze excerpts of three Spanish translations in order to identify techniques used to render this trope, to verify the consequences of the omission of the linking words, and to investigate whether Spanish readers will be able to recreate the same or a similar image to the one evoked in the original.

Opis:
When translating a literary text from a more or less remote past, a translator has to resort to some kind of imitation of the past text features, which is traditionally called archaization or temporal stylization. The fundamentals of temporal stylization were outlined in A. Fedorov’s works and later developed by a number of scholars, yet the research into archaization as a translation strategy has started only recently. The article looks into the functions of temporal stylization, such as transferring the reader into a distant epoch; increasing the effect of the fictional play; rendering the cultural dynamics through the text, reflecting the text’s various generic qualities, including the archaic ones. The illustrative examples come from the author’s own translation work: 19th century Romantic prose (T. Hoffman, L. Tieck), Austrian folk tales, private correspondence (W.A. Mozart’s letters), suggesting that the repertoire of the expressive means to render the historic colouring was found out through precedents. The author lays out her ideas about the possibility of self-evaluation in translation and puts forward the hypothesis that the type of temporal stylization depends on the type of the text. Temporal archaization is understood as a complex of typological text features and conventions, style registers and variations of the language norm. The research opens up a field for developing micro and macro strategies for literary translation.

The article examines five Polish translations of the famous ballad The Raven written by Edgar Allan Poe. The translations come from different periods; the efforts by Przesmycki and Beaupre belong to the period of “Młoda Polska”, and date roughly from the tum of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The translation by Kasiński, although it was created a few decades later, still shows a clear influence of the specific aesthetics of the “Młoda Polska” movement. These three translations, in spite of numerous differences, form quite a uniform set, with the dominant underlying strategy of domestication, which manifests itself in “ennoblement” and “clarification”. By contrast, the two contemporary translations, by Barańczak and by Kozak, lack the stylistic homogeneity of their predecessors. They are also characterized by the various departures from the original, motivated by the different subjective approaches taken by each translator. None of the five examined Polish translations has attained the satisfactory degree of equivalence with respect to the original text.

The subject of the article is the question of rendering the addressee in the Polish translations of Song of Myself by Walt Whitman, in which a certain indeterminacy in the shaping of the recipient can be observed. The crucial distinction between the intratextual addressee and the extratextual addressee projected by the text, based on the typology proposed by David Herman, allows taking into consideration the personal reader as the communicative partner of the speaker in the poem. Initially, the Polish translation of the poem by Andrzej Szuba projects a community as the addressee, whereas from the translation by Ludmiła Marjańska the image of the individual recipient emerges. However, further on in the translation by Szuba the collective addressee changes into the single one, whereas in the translation by Marjańska the opposite process takes place because in the final section the individual addressee turns into the collective one. But it is not an unspecified community that is the participant of the communicative situation projected by the text; it is an individual, it is each personal reader. It is the individual extratextual addressee that is the beneficiary of the poetic undertaking. Unfortunately, the existing Polish translations are not conducive to the understanding of the role assigned to the extratextual addressee by the text, and make it hard for the Polish reader to form a proper mental image of the recipient projected by the poem.

This article recalls the circumstances of the first edition of the novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, in Polish translation, which appeared in 1959 in volume XLIV of the Biblioteka ‟Kultury” series, published by the Paris Literary Institute. Reconstruction of the history of this publishing initiative in the context of the political situation is possible thanks to historical sources preserved in the Paris and Warsaw archives, publications in periodicals, memoirs and epistolary culture. The circumstances in which the typescript was imported to Poland and in which the Literary Institute obtained a license for a Polish translation, the choice of translator, and Jerzy Giedroyc and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s correspondence are discussed. An important source of information is the lively correspondence between Maria Dąbrowska and Jerzy Stempowski, the son of a publicist and social activist, and Mason Stanisław Stempowski, a longtime life partner of the writer. The fragments of epistolary culture discussed here allow a better understanding of these outstanding individuals of the twentieth century. The content of the correspondence analyzed also allows us to reconstruct many interesting facts from the field of translating Russian literature into Polish, as well as the complex situation of Polish-Russian relations in the post-war period.

The division of texts for the purpose of translation into literary and non-literary ones, based mostly on the dominant language function in a given text type, often leads to a stereotypical understanding of the stance of the translator’s competence. Non-literary text translators who focus entirely on that branch of knowledge that a given text refers to and on related terminology may overlook the cultural and intertextual elements. This not only ignores the intention of introducing them into the text, but also may change the meaning of passages in which they are included. The analysis of a book concerning psychology and psychotherapy: Systems of Psychotherapy. A Transtheoretical Analysis, as representing non-literary texts, and G.K. Chesterton’s detective stories, being examples of literary texts, provides some examples of introducing more or less implicit references to the Bible into psychological discourse and literature respectively. Despite the label of scientific texts, American psychological literature is characterized by numerous hidden quotations from other sources which serve various functions: using the already lexicalised phrase- ology or entering into a polemics with the religious doctrine. Consequently, in translating such texts, translators cannot limit themselves to a thorough knowledge of psychology, psychotherapy and terminology connected with those areas, but must also be observant enough to notice interte- xtual traces and then be able to localize them and interpret them correctly. Otherwise the transla- tion may alter the original meaning or introduce an ambiguity which is not welcome in such texts. Thus ‘intertextual competence’ is by no means reserved for literary text translators for whom this type of expertise is obviously of primary importance.

Opis:
The article aims at analysing a concept of translator’s creativity and its function performed in the course of rendering neologism in a literary text. The linguistic material constitutes Michael Kandel’s translation of chosen robot names from the S-F novel Cyberiada by Stanisław Lem. The process of rendition is discussed from a literary and linguistic point of view. Therefore, such factors influencing translation as functions a particular name serves in the novel and its linguistic structure are taken into consideration. Moreover, motives for the employment of certain translation procedures, recommended by Peter Newmark, which pertain to neologisms are accounted for. The analysis shows that Kandel’s translation appears to be successful since, owing to his creativity, he menages to render such layers of neologism as its meaning, referent, form, connotation, function and, in some cases, sound. Doubtless, all these are not retained in each case due to obvious language impediments. Nevertheless, the neologisms sufficiently allow the TL reader to get to know futuristic characters of Cyberiada.
