Shelf space allocation
Opis:
Aim/purpose – Shelf space is one of the most important tools for attracting customers’ attention in a retail store. This paper aims to develop a practical shelf space allocation model with visible vertical and horizontal categories. and formulate it in linear and non-linear forms. Design/methodology/approach – The research is mainly based on operational research. Simulation, mathematical optimization, and linear and nonlinear programming methods are mainly used. Special attention is given to the decision variables and constraints. Changing the dimensioning of the decision variables results in an improvement in the formulation of the problem, which in turn allows for obtaining an optimal solution. Findings – A comparison of the developed shelf space allocation models with visible vertical and horizontal categories in linear and nonlinear forms is presented. The computational experiments were performed with the help of CPLEX solver, which shows that the optimal solution of the linear problem formulation was obtained within a couple of seconds. However, a nonlinear form of this problem found the optimal solution only in 19 out of 45 instances. An increase in the time limits slightly improves the performance of the solutions of the nonlinear form. Research implications/limitations – The main implication of research results for science is related to the possibility of determining an optimal solution to the initially formulated nonlinear shelf space allocation problem. The main implication for practice is to take into consideration the practical constraints based on customers’ requirements. The main limitations are the lack of storage conditions and holding time constraints. Originality/value/contribution – The main contribution is related to developing mathematical models that consider simultaneous categorization of products vertically, based on one characteristic, and horizontally, based on another characteristic. Contribution is also related to extending the shelf space allocation theory with the shelf space allocation problem model in relation to four sets of constraints: shelf constraints, product constraints, orientation constraints, and band constraints.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – Energy is traditionally produced using fossil fuels as raw materials, which impacts the environment negatively. Due to the scarcity of fossil fuel supplies, rising prices of energy carriers, and global trends, consumers are turning to renewable energy sources (RES) for home heating. The aim of this study was to determine whether the choice of house heating system using different sources than fossil fuels is driven by any additional components of single-family house users’ purchasing decisions besides cost. Based on research results, the prospects for further transformation of thermal energy in single-family housing in Poland towards RES were determined. Design/methodology/approach – The research on the inhabitants of single-family houses was conducted in December 2022 in Poland. The research method used was a survey using the CATI and CAWI techniques. 600 respondents filled out the questionnaire. The results were statistically analyzed. A non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test (non-parametric ANOVA) and a post-hoc test were used. The distributions’ normality and the variances’ homogeneity were measured using Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Brownian–Forsythe tests. Calculations were performed using Statistica software. Findings – The choice of heating energy source in single-family houses, taking CO2 emissions into account, is not dictated by income level. Instead, it is determined by the number of people in the household. More numerous households opt for a zero-emission heat source. Households using emission-based heating energy sources are significantly more driven by the cost of using heating appliances; their purchase price, reliability, and product quality are more important than those using zero-emission methods. The partial use of renewable energy source solutions promotes further investment in emission-free heat sources. Research implications/limitations – The analysis illustrates the state of thermal transformation in single-family houses during the energy transition process at the national level. A limitation of the research is that it samples only one EU country struggling with too high CO2 emissions compared to other countries. Originality/value/contribution – A unique approach used in this study is to address the variation in incentives for renewable energy purchasing decisions, considering CO2 emissions. This aspect, although noticeable to some extent, is not directly taken into account by users who do not have the tools to assess their CO2 emissions. However, the proposed research approach showed that the CO2 emission level of a heating system is a factor differentiating some aspects of the decision-making process of system users. In particular, it showed what elements of the decision are essential in households that have not yet taken any action towards energy transformation.

Opis:
Academic conferences are platforms established by scientists to provide broad access to their research. For this reason, it is important to have influential researchers presenting plenary talks and for the scientific community in that field to submit their work. Various organizations and academic institutions organize hundreds of academic conferences a year. Academics have to select conferences to attend, since it is not possible to participate in every conference. Conference selection takes into account such factors as: the registration fee, subject of the conference and its appropriateness, conference language and the deadline for submission. We consider the specific criteria that academics use to choose conferences and effective decision-making in this field. In this study, we use an approach based on analytic network processes (ANPs) to appropriately choose a conference based on multiple criteria.

Opis:
In this paper analytic hierarchy process (AHP), a well-known approach for handling multi-criteria decision making problems, is discussed. It is based on pairwise comparisons. The methods for deriving the priority vectors from comparison matrices are examined. The existing methods for aggregating the individual comparison matrices into a group comparison matrix are revised. A method for aggregation, called WGMDEA, is proposed for application in the case study. Because exact (crisp) values cannot always express the subjectivity and the lack of information on the part of a decision maker, the interval judgments are more suitable in such cases. Two main methodological problems emerge when dealing with interval comparison matrices in group AHP: a) to aggregate individual crisp preferences into the joint interval matrix, b) to calculate the weights from the joint interval comparison matrix. In the paper we first discuss the already proposed approaches to the aggregation of individual matrices, and the derivation of weights from interval comparison matrices, pertained to AHP group decision making methodology. Then, a new method, ADEXTREME, for generating the interval group judgments from individual judgments is proposed. A numerical example based on Rural Development Program of the Republic of Slovenia in 2007-2013 is presented to illustrate the new methodology for deriving the weights from interval comparison matrices. The results obtained by WGMDEA, MEDINT and ADEXTREME methods are compared.

Evaluation o f programs initiated by manufacturing firms that are geared toward sustainability is worthy o f attention in research due to the current global demands o f addressing not just economic growth bu t environmental and social burdens. This paper a ttempts to provide a comprehensive evaluation framework using the hierarchical structure o f sustainable manufacturing (SM) indicators set developed by the US National Institute o f Standards and Technology (US NIST) and a multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) approach, the analytic network process (ANP). ANP is deemed appropriate, aside from the multi-criteria nature o f the problem, because o f the presence o f subjective components that are interrelating in complex relationships. A real case study is carried out in a semiconductor manufacturing firm in the Philippines in the evaluation o f its programs toward sustainability. The results show that the creation and implementation o f cleaner production technologies are considered the most relevant programs. Developing energy-efficient products and adopting lean six sigma programs are considered second o n the list. This paper proposes that sustainability is achieved by formulating strategies that enhance customer and community well-being v ia addressing environmental concerns especially o n toxic substance, greenhouse gas (GHG) and air emissions. The contribution o f this paper consists in providing an evaluation framework which is comprehensive enough to capture real-life complex decision-making processes. Limitations and possibilities fo r future research are also presented in this paper.

Opis:
Głównym celem pracy jest przedstawienie możliwości uwzględniania nieporównywalności kryteriów w procedurze wielokryterialnego wspomagania decyzji z wykorzystaniem metody AHP. Praca dotyczy zastosowania metod wielokryterialnych do oceny projektów inwestycyjnych dotyczących wyrobiska wybierkowego w kopalni węgla kamiennego.
The main aim of this paper is to present the possibilities to take into consideration non-comparability criteria in the procedure of multi-criteria decision support using AHP method. The work concerns the application of multi-criteria methods for the evaluation of investment projects associated with excavation in hard coal mine. The inclusion of non-comparability criteria is associated with the safety aspects of work (existing threats). The issues dealt with in the work are a consequence of the investment life cycle analysis evaluation and the use of the concept of risk dominance for the decision support.
