Opis:
The paper compares performance of Baldwin's fuzzy reasoning based on a fuzzy truth value with the fastest available solutions. The analysis is important in order to locate areas where improvement of the first is the most significant. Potential fast approach based on the fuzzy truth value would be very interesting for many users applying fuzzy systems to solve problems involved with complex knowledge bases. Particularly, all research considering an analysis of genes employing DNA microarrays. Such methods very often generate rules with thousands of atomic premises. The most valuable advantage of Baldwin's reasoning is preserving a fuzzy relation between a fact and a premise in the inference process, where other solutions, especially those commonly used, usually reduce it to only one value. Obtaining the method which, from computation time point of view, is comparable with common approaches but offers more advanced process of fuzzy reasoning, would be a significant achievement. The goal of this analysis is to prepare the future research considering development of Baldwin's method, which computational complexity is comparable to simple, fast and widely used solutions like systems based on the approach of Mamdani and Assilan or Larsen.

Opis:
Uncertain queries are very common in many areas of human activity. The problem can be seen particularly in medicine, where expressions like ”very high”, ”low”, ”normal” are commonly used in order to describe different information. However, the most popular data repositories do not allow to form imprecise queries in order to filter information. Therefore, the paper proposes an extension to the standard SQL language allowing anybody to profit from fuzzy database using any SQL engine. The existing approaches employ different mechanisms in order to allow the user to perform fuzzy queries on a database. The most complex solutions modify the database engine itself. However, such approach is strongly bound to the modified server version and must be updated with any development of the original server. Nevertheless, there is possible to store fuzzy information using for instance columns of regular relational database. Therefore, this approach proposes extensions to the query language allowing to use fuzzy information in a query and provides a parser transforming a fuzzy query into a standard SQL. Thus, the database server version is irrelevant. The solution is provided as a module written in multi-platform Java language using popular JDBC database connection.

Opis:
The paper introduces a significant improvement of the signature recognition method based on characteristic preprocessing of an input data. The original approach transforms an input data into a sorted set of points obtained from intersections of a signature with generated lines going through it's center point. For further analysis the discrete Walsh transform was used. The solution presented in this paper divides points obtained in the preprocessing phase into groups. This step allows the method to preserve more unique features, which positively reflects on the results. Preprocessed data is used to build a fuzzy structure called the fuzzy signature. The method considering a natural imprecision makes the verification system flexible.

Opis:
The paper proposes possible improvements in signature recognition approach based on window method. The analysis focuses on a stage of window preprocessing using fuzzy sets in order to choose significant ranges of each signature. Proposed extension allows the solution to improve in two areas. First of all minimizing a number of processed windows significantly reduces computation time. Secondly, filtered signatures with valuable information about significant ranges allow the system to recognize signatures of a poor or good quality. Developed method of signature quality assessment can be used in any signature recognition system, regardless of used method of analysis. Merging the information about signature quality and choosing only important signature ranges should also improve the overall detection results, however, more examinations are needed to confirm this statement.

Opis:
Diagnostic rules are usually IF-THEN rules, but they should satisfy specific requirements of a diagnosis. Thus, not always the classical methods of rules determination are applicable. In the present paper it is suggested to find out the set of rules by an elimination of superfluous rules from the maximal rule set or adding rules that improve inference to the minimal set of rules. It is shown that the basic probability assignment determined in the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence can be used as a measure indicating symptoms that are the most significant for a diagnosis and should create rules. A set of IF-THEN rules with fuzzy premises and crisp conclusions can be built in this way. The proposed method is illustrated by determining rules allowing for diagnostic inference for a database of thyroid gland diseases.

Opis:
Computational Intelligence has emerged as a synergistic environment of Granular Computing (including fuzzy sets, rough sets, interval analysis), neural networks and evolutionary optimisation. This symbiotic framework addresses the needs of system modelling with regard to its transparency, accuracy and user friendliness. This becomes of paramount interest in various modelling in bioinformatics especially when we are concerned with decision-making processes. The objective of this study is to elaborate on the two essential features of CI that is Granular Computing and the resulting aspects of logic-oriented processing and its transparency. As the name stipulates, Granular Computing is concerned with processing carried out at a level of coherent conceptual entities - information granules. Such granules are viewed as inherently conceptual entities formed at some level of abstraction whose processing is rooted in the language of logic (especially, many valued or fuzzy logic). The logic facet of processing is cast in the realm of fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets that construct a consistent processing background necessary for operating on information granules. Several main categories of logic processing units (logic neurons) are discussed that support aggregative (and-like and or-like operators) and referential logic mechanisms (dominance, inclusion, and matching). We show how the logic neurons contribute to high functional transparency of granular processing, help capture prior domain knowledge and give rise to a diversity of the resulting models.

Medical objects are based on different formats, where graphics are the most representative. They provide us with tremendous volumes of the data, very troublesome in management processes. For simplifying these processes, many works for simple and fast descriptors finding were undertaken. Fashionable platform for solving these problems one can be found in XML environment. This technology enables ordering and simple organisation of the database, with friendly linguistic description of the discussed items.

Opis:
The methods of Computational Intelligence (CI) including a framework of Granular Computing, open promising research avenues in the realm of processing, analysis and interpretation of biomedical signals. Similarly, they augment the existing plethora of "classic" techniques of signal processing. CI comes as a highly synergistic environment in which learning abilities, knowledge representation, and global optimization mechanisms and this essential feature is of paramount interest when processing biomedical signals. We discuss the main technologies of Computational Intelligence (namely, neural networks, fuzzy sets, and evolutionary optimization), identify their focal points and elaborate on possible limitations, and stress an overall synergistic character, which ultimately gives rise to the highly symbiotic CI environment. The direct impact of the CI technology on ECG signal processing and classification is studied with a discussion on the main directions present in the literature. The design of information granules is elaborated on; their design realized on a basis of numeric data as well as pieces of domain knowledge is considered. Examples of the CI-based ECG signal processing problems are presented. We show how the concepts and algorithms of CI augment the existing classification methods used so far in the domain of ECG signal processing. A detailed construction of granular prototypes of ECG signals being more in rapport with the diversity of signals analyzed is discussed as well.
