Opis:
Most constructionist analyses of social problems are case studies; these focus attention on the particulars of the case at hand. Analysts have devoted less attention to the ways cases can be connected. This paper presents a typology of such connections, based on five elements: the problem, the frame, the claims-makers, place, and time. The typology identifies ways each of these elements can serve as a basis for connecting different campaigns to construct social problems.

Opis:
In Constructing Social Problems, Spector and Kitsuse initiated a constructionist approach to the study of social problems that would emphasize processes of definition over objective conditions. Despite this emphasis on a different subject matter, the social problems moniker was retained and continues to frame the constructionist study of claims-making. This paper contests the centrality of the social problems concept to the constructionist perspective and proposes a shift in theoretical emphasis from constructions of problematic conditions to constructions of actors’ interests. I use the term “interest claims” to describe assertions of what is advantageous or beneficial to certain people or groups, and use a brief case study of claims made by a school board and a group of parents to delineate the difference between paternalistic (“their” best interests) and proprietary (“our” best interests) claims-making activities. Finally, I argue for the inclusion of claims-maker interests and motivations in the study of interest claims and claims-making.

Opis:
Building on the work of Dorothy Smith and Bruno Latour, this article examines the textual mediation of social problems activities. Because of their materiality and/or digitality, texts preserve constructions of reality, rendering those constructions durable and mobile. This, in turn, allows claims-makers distant in time or space to access those constructions as interpretive resources for claims-making. Texts, then, help us account for how social problems spread and endure. We show how texts mediate claims-makers access to two resources for claims-making: the “reality” of problematic conditions and definitions of problems. We also consider how texts structure social problems work. We conclude by briefly considering how the contemporary technological environment may be altering the textual mediation of claims-making.

Appeals to authority have always played a key role in the construction of social problems. Authority legitimates claims, which is why claim-makers have always sought its validation. An exploration into the historical dimension of the social construction of authority provides insight into changing foundations on which claims about social problems are made. In contrast to the Middle Ages, the modern era has found it difficult to gain consensus on the meaning of authority. This historical shift in the status of authority provides the context for contemporary competitive claims-making about social problems.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to explore the intricate relations between objectivism, subjectivism, and constructionism. I explore the construction of social problems in everyday professional practice as a valuable source for addressing and reflecting on differences in perceptions of knowledge. Using data from a study of how Danish social workers perceive social problems, the article shows how social workers’ perceptions of social problems reveal a sociological sense of social problems that renders possible both ontological assumptions, as well as epistemological reflections on the objective, subjective, and social constructionist dimensions of social problems. The social workers are constructing a model of social problems and how they are reproduced, as well as epistemological reflections on the uncertainty of knowing the “reality” of social problems. Those constructions are not formulated strictly in line with scholarly approaches but rather stem from experiences of working with social problems. The article proposes that we can learn something from this in terms of reimagining social constructionism. I propose that social constructionists should cultivate a sociological sense of the practical perceptions and approaches to solve social problems in society.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to develop a new constructionist perspective on path-dependence of a social problem by examining the process of constructing issues regarding the revisions of the Tokyo Youth Protection Ordinance from December 2008 to July 2010. I start with pointing out that a social problem has a cycle of concern and a unique past and background, in a word, path-dependence. Once a social problem process has started down a track, the costs of reversal are very high. Through investigating the revision process between pro-regulation and anti-regulation groups compared with the previous arguments, I found three characteristics of arguments: the limited use of statistics, shared grounds, and shared warrants. I interpret the features as an unintended consequence of path-dependence of the pornocomic problem. This context limits the course of claims-making activities and affects the following controversy. I conclude that the concept of path-dependence offers a better understanding of how and why claims-making activities sometimes lose their diversity and are lopsided over time.

Social phenomena influence the development processes of the economy and for this reason the problem of marginalization and social exclusion is much more significant. In addition, the sense and deepening of the common good with a specific territory manifests itself in the involvement of its inhabitants in the implementation of various types of projects and programs. The involvement of local communities can be the basis for launching development processes which are based on endogenous factors. In this context, the aim of the article is to show how the results of research in the area of neurosciences can contribute to coping with social problems on the example of problem regions, when solving failures repeatedly. This is exemplified by the activation of people who are excluded or at risk of social exclusion.

This article builds on recent sociological debates about the explanatory importance of claims-making contexts and the continuing challenges associated with subjectivism and objectivism in social problems research. The sociology of knowledge is used to illustrate how the contextual compromise that has sustained social problems theory and method for at least two decades is based on a number of erroneous assumptions about subjectivity and objectivity in the tradition of phenomenological analysis. To strengthen recent discussions about the contextual dimensions of claims-making activities and framing techniques, the article critically assesses the curious neglect and continuing misrepresentation of the sociology of knowledge in constructionist analyses of social problems.

Opis:
This paper argues for programmatic change within social constructionist approaches to social problems by attending to materiality in the theoretical conception of social context. To illustrate how this might be done, we place the interplay between social problems construction and technology (what we refer to as the mangle of social problems work) at its center by examining how the advent of “big data” is impacting the construction of social problems. Using the growing field of intelligence-led policing (ILP) as our illustrative example, we will examine four effects the large scale collection and analysis of data has on the way social problems claims are made. We begin by arguing that big data offers a new method by which putative problems are discovered and legitimized. We then explore how large data sets and algorithmic data analysis are increasingly used for predicting future problems. Following this, we illustrate how big data is used to construct and implement solutions to future problems. Lastly, we use the interplay between big data and those who use it to illustrate “the mangle of social problems work,” where data is made meaningful and actionable through the interpretive and analytic processes of analysts and police officers.

Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork on a wage subsidy project for NEETs in London, this article examines how talk and documents are used to make sense of caseloads and clients. The article draws attention to the way that staff account for clients through using “Intervention Tales.” The use of these tales provide insights into the routine implementation of labor market interventions. The article describes the work involved in documenting staff-client interactions and selecting which clients to put forward for “live vacancies.” The article shows how organizational documents, spreadsheets, and client registration forms are used as resources for assessing “hard to engage” clients during routine activities. In this sense, intervention tales, talk, and documents provide practical resources for organizing ordinary activities, such as segmenting client caseloads and characterizing individual clients.

Planning of social policy it is complicated and multidimensional issue, especially in complex urban structures characteristic for big cities. However econometric indicators of spatial dependence provide us some information about spatial autocorrelation, their do not show the differences in local variability. Geostatistics is an answer for this challenge. This method is not only helpful in more accurate determination of the most important problems but it also enables identification of their location, scale and possible reasons. This paper presents possibilities given by Poisson Kriging for analysis of social problems in urban space. Its was applied in Poznań for identification of neighbourhoods or local communities (related to the basic administrative units called „osiedla”) in which concentration of people needing social help is bigger than population distribution might it suggest. The data used in the analysis was taken from urban centre helping families in difficult social situation (MOPR). They concerns people who received financial support in 2008. The basic information taken into account was their place of residence and the reason for which they received financial aid. MOPR distinguish 13 categories of social problems needing support, including poverty, chronic diseases, alcoholism and domestic violence. 9 473 persons received financial aid in the analysed period of time. Taking into account their families it give us at least 18 264 people struggling with social problems – 3,3% of the city population (545 000 inhabitants). In order to receive comparable measure of issues analysed in urban space, the number of people needing social support must be compared with the population distribution. Thus, information about place of residence of people who receives financial aid was aggregated to bigger areas – 731 regular polygons for which the number of city inhabitants was know. Side length of single polygon was 500 meters. In each polygon data needed also to be age-adjusted. It is very sophisticated task, therefore special script dedicated for ArcGIS was created. The age-adjusted data aggregated in the polygons were bases for main spatial analysis. Application of Poisson Kriging resulted in more precise identification of areas affected by the major social problems in Poznań. Presence of autocorrelation was noticeable in case of majority of analysed social problems. The most common ranges of autocorrelation were 1‒1,2 km (which is similar to the spatial range of single local communities) and 6–6,5 km (the range of single neighbourhoods). Analysis showed that there are some neighbourhoods in Poznań where occurrence of social problems is significantly higher than mean occurrence for the whole city. Presented method enabled smoothing of unreliable, extremely high relative risks values but without loss of the local variability.

This paper examines expert testimony advocating the inclusion, in proposed hate-crime legislation, of crimes motivated by gender bias. The design and rhetoric of such testimony evidences formal properties. Precisely because these properties are formal properties, not limited to specific cases or issues, their explication will contribute not only to the understanding of hate crimes discourse, but to social problems research and theory more broadly. Arguments for the expansion of rights to previously unprotected categories (1) can be designed with an emphasis on generic or formal principles, which allow for the inclusion of previously unprotected groups whose victimization constitutes additional social problems not yet institutionally recognized. Such arguments (2) can emphasize parallelism between protected categories and unprotected categories, and between recognized social problems and as-yet-unrecognized social problems, making similar institutional treatment seem rational, and making disparate treatment seem unjustifiable or insensitive. And such arguments (3) can propose limits to the desired expansion of rights, as a means of pre-empting “floodgate” arguments against expanding the scope of existing protections. More generally, membership categorization analysis is employed to study social identity and inter-group relations as these are constituted in social problems discourse. Special reference is made in this case to “hate crimes” and how they might be addressed by membership categorization analysis in the context of constructionist social problems analysis and qualitative sociolegal studies.

This paper presents an issue of contemporary charity activities as seen in sociological perspectives, including sociology of emotions and sociology of social problems. The main thesis states that prosocial behavior is a complex phenomenon due to the various motives and conditions. The author argues that emotions play an important role in individual and institutional charity. The empirical implication of theoretical assumptions is the analysis of the content of the websites of three charitable organizations with the highest level of trust in Poland: the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the Polish Caritas and the Polish Red Cross.

Ethical problems are an integral part of social researchers’ work within both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Some of them are common to all research methods, while others depend on a particular research method, group, or question. This article discusses ethical problems appearing in biographically-oriented research. Based on the example of her own research on gender identity in elderly people, the author examines the problems that are likely to arise in the researcher’s relationship with a given researched group; she considers her own experiences and ways to cope with them. The difficulties include sampling, the problem of informed consent, the content of the autobiographical narrative, the researcher’s responsibility for the emotions evoked in the respondents, and the influence of the traits and emotions of the person conducting the research on its course. Therefore, the article serves as a contribution to a broader discussion about the difficulties and ethical problems which both male and female researchers have to face in the research field, but which they rarely disclose and discuss.
