The concept of narrow content is still under discussion in the debate over mental representation. In the paper, one-factor dimensional accounts of representation are analyzed, particularly the case of Fodor's methodological solipsism. In methodological solipsism, semantic properties of content are arguably eliminated in favor of syntactic ones. If “narrow content” means content properties independent of external factors to a system (as in Segal's view), the concept of content becomes elusive. Moreover, important conceptual problems with one-factor dimensional account are pointed out as a result of analysis arguments presented by J. Searle, S. Harnad and T. Burge. Furthermore, these problems are illustrated with psychological and ethological examples. Although understanding content as partially independent from contextual factors allows theorists to preserve content properties, it seems that understanding content in total abstraction from external factors of these properties is implausible. As a result, internalism is rejected in favor of externalism.

Pełen obrazowych porównań styl Rachilde zachęca do przyjrzenia się występujących w jej powieściach hypotypozom. Ciekawe przykłady tej figury spotykamy w dwóch utworach: Les Hors nature i La Jongleuse. W obu przypadkach chodzi o sceny odważne erotycznie. Ze względu na cenzurę obyczajową Rachilde musi jednocześnie działać na wyobraźnię czytelnika siłą swoich obrazów, unikać jasnych sformułowań i uciekać się do sugestii. Liczne figury stylistyczne: elipsy, peryfrazy, metafory, zaburzają jasny przekaz, który, według Yves’a Le Bozeca, stanowi jeden ze składników hypotypozy. Artykuł stawia sobie zatem za cel omówienie budowy tej figury u Rachilde. - Z drugiej jednak strony wybrane sceny mają posłużyć jako demonstracja teorii miłości idealnej – niemożliwej – którą powieściopisarka zawarła w swoich powieściach. Wykraczając poza ramy teoretycznego dyskursu, bohaterowie reżyserują swoje wystąpienia na oczach zamarłych z oburzenia widzów. Ten rodzaj przestawienia teatralnego wzmacnia efekt hypotypozy, a reakcje świadków naocznych zastępują zwroty zachęcające do przyjrzenia się scenie, częste w hypotypozach teatralnych. Tego rodzaju połączenie ma głęboko wstrząsnąć czytelnikiem. - Ostatecznie warto się zastanowić, czy Rachilde, niezależnie od pierwotnych zamierzeń aksjologicznych, nie uległa pokusie prowokacji za pomocą szokujących obrazów i czy potęga stworzonych przez nią hypotypoz nie stanowi ostatecznie jednego z jej podstawowych osiągnięć.
The style of Rachilde which abounds in picturesque comparison invites a reader to examine her use of hypotyposis. Two of her novels: Les Hors Nature and La Jongleuse offer particularly interesting examples of this figure, both of them mainly in erotically uninhibited scenes. Because of the bowdlerisation of the time, while impressing the reader's imagination with the power of images, Rachilde had to avoid clear wording and resort to suggestion. That’s why many rhetorical figures: ellipses, circumlocutions, metaphors blur the clarity of description, which according to Yves Le Bozec makes one of the formal features of hypotypose. The aim of this paper is to analyse the construction of this figure in Rachilde's literary output. - On the other hand, the scenes in question were designed to illustrate the concept of ideal love – the impossible one – that the novelist develops in her works. Crossing the limits of the theoretical discourse, the protagonists direct their own performances, watched by the stunned and outraged viewers. This way of presentation enhances the hypotypotique effect. The reactions of eyewitnesses replace the phrases designed to encourage the audience to observe the scene. Such phrases are common in theatrical hypotyposis. This interweaving is designed to impress the reader deeply. - However, the question arises whether Rachilde, despite her primary axiological intention, did not succumb to the temptation to provoke the public with shocking images, and whether the strength of her hypotyposis does not remain, in the end, one of her major achievements.

This paper discusses translation practices from a historicist viewpoint, contextualizing them in their emerging “episode.” The latter is a concept drawn from sociology of literature and accounts for the rise of certain discourses and ideologies in a society. On the basis of the argument that translation practices are informed by the general literary and socio-cultural milieu in which they are produced and consumed (also known as ideology of representation), the paper studies the translators’ prefaces to three translations published between 1953 and 1978—a period dominated by Leftist and Marxist discourse in Iran. Drawing on a historically oriented model which holds that the translator’s ideology is revealed at the moment in which he/she chooses a text, and continues through the discourse he/she develops to translate that text, the research embarks on studying translation practices on two levels of choice mechanism and prefaces. Prefaces are discussed in the light of the dominant ideology of representation that is characterized by a revolutionary discourse. The research demonstrates that these translators opted for a strategy that incorporates the translations in the Persian cultural setting with minor changes in a way that politicizes the foreign literature.

The traditional assumption of the state sovereignty norm has been that an international society of states will structure the international order to safeguard the interests of the state. The end of the Cold War era transformed international relations and led to a discussion on how states interacted with their populations. From the early 1990s, research on international relations, war and peace, and security studies identified the growing problem of failing states. Such states are increasingly unable to implement the core functions that define the sovereignty norms. This article explores the state-building process of Kosovo with a focus on the political road taken from independence in February 2008 to the challenges Kosovo faces today. Kosovo still has substantial issues to address regarding core state functions in the development of prosperity, popular representation and security.

In tins paper we present a method which is able to identify the degrees of the matrix polynomials that are involved in the VARMA models. This method is based on the difference between the ranks of certain matrices defined from the sample covariance matrices of the process. The values of the mentioned difference are arranged in tabular from. The specific structure of this table lets us characterize a VARMA (p, q) model. We study the relative significance of certain elements to confirm the used pattern. The proposed procedure is illustrated by data simulations.

The corporeal difference is the most fundamental in experiencing the otherness of the other. Confrontations with freak bodies in public spaces often leave us helpless, yet they call for strategies that would resolve the problem of their otherness. Modernity has formulated two basic rules governing the presence of heterotopic body: its medicalization and normativization. It would then seem that there is now a void where once was a freak show. Yet, the traces of freak shows’ spectacular logic can be traced in the television talk show formula. The comparison of these two is not aimed only at pointing at some superficial similarities, but also to more in-depth analogies concerning the logic of representation of corporeal otherness and lastly – to the metanarrative behind the show that justifies its obscenity. The paper concludes with a question of the possibility of adapting, yet, another strategy of making freak bodies publicly visible: freak show-based performances of disabled artists.

The recent accounts of our era usually argue that pleasure, sensuality, and sexuality play essential roles in media and consumer culture. Advertising especially is regarded as a place where rational argument is displaced by pleasure and sex. However, it is hard to find systematic empirical analysis to verify these claims. In this article, I examine the pervasiveness of the ideal of pleasure empirically in television advertising by analysing 167 Finnish advertisements. The findings suggest that the prevailing discourse about hedonistic culture and especially the hedonistic advertising culture captures something essential, but that this discourse does not tell the whole story because it does not notice the flipside, the ideal of the ascetically-oriented body that appears as frequently as the hedonistic ideal.

This paper is devoted to the empirical evaluation of the extension of the Gärdenfors’ similarity model. His proposition insufficiently emphasizes the asymmetry of the modeled relationship of similarity. The proposed modification allows one to include the asymmetry of similarity and significantly sensitize the model to any contextual nuances. The model was compared with other theoretical proposals of geometrical modeling of similarity, including two asymmetric models and one symmetrical. The empirical evaluation of the model took place in two series of experiments. The obtained statistical data were compared with results inferred by tested models. The evaluation was based on iterative procedure designed to minimize the error generated by all compared models.

This paper draws on the author’s experience undertaking life history research with adults with histories of organized child sexual abuse. Organized abuse has been a particular flashpoint for controversy in debates over child abuse and memory, but it is also a very harmful and traumatic form of sexual violence. Research participants described how, in childhood, threats and trauma kept them silent about their abuse, but in adulthood this silence was reinforced by the invalidation that accompanied their efforts to draw attention to the harms that have befallen themselves and others. This paper will examine the role of qualitative research in addressing a form of alterity whose defining characteristic is the silencing and dismissal of narrative.

Focusing on the work of Yemenite “ethnic” dance companies in Israel, this article aims to understand how issues such as a shift in collective representations come to be invested into dance practices. In other words, it discusses how artistic creation and identity reconfigurations happen to associate in a dance form, and how an ethnographic study of dance practices and their contexts of performance may be a valuable way of accessing the dynamics of self-positioning of a group within the surrounding society. Linking together “classical” ethnography, analysis of dance products, and socio-political contextualisation, the present analysis shows that the articulation of two apparently contradictory ways of building these companies’ repertoire allows Yemenite dancers, choreographers, and also internal audience, to assume in one single dance form a sense of “being Yemenite” whilst not giving up the national dimension of their Israeli identity.

This study aims to bring out the explanatory potential of embodied predictionism versus passive feed-forward model of sensory stimulation in the pursuit of a parsimonious naturalist account of sensation as a salient feature and an end point of conscious experience. Theoretical approaches towards sensory experience are tested against specific scenarios of the absence of observable or palpable qualities including but not limited to the thought-experimental phenomenon of negative synesthesia at the conclusion of the argument. . Predictionism is first explored in its own right only to be found insufficient to do justice to the actual mechanism behind full-blown immediate perception. A case is made for the soundness of predictionism reconciled with the doctrine of embodiment.

Predictive Processing (PP) framework construes perception and action (and perhaps other cognitive phenomena) as a matter of minimizing prediction error, i.e. the mismatch between the sensory input and sensory predictions generated by a hierarchically organized statistical model. There is a question of how PP fits into the debate between traditional, neurocentric and representation-heavy approaches in cognitive science and those approaches that see cognition as embodied, environmentally embedded, extended and (largely) representation-free. In the present paper, I aim to investigate and clarify the cognitivist or ‘conservative’ reading of PP. I argue that the conservative commitments of PP can be divided into three distinct categories: (1) representationalism, (2) inferentialism, and (3) internalism. I show how these commitments and their relations should be understood and argue for an interpretation of each that is both non-trivial and largely ecumenical towards the 4E literature. Conservative PP is as progressive as conservatism gets

W ostatnich latach pojawiły się metody symbolicznego reprezentowania szeregów czasowych. Te badania są zasadniczo motywowane względami praktycznymi, takimi jak oszczędzanie pamięci lub szybkie przeszukiwanie baz danych. Niektóre wyniki w temacie symbolicznego reprezentowania szeregów czasowych sugerują, że zapis skrócony może nawet poprawić wyniki grupowania. Artykuł zawiera propozycję nowego algorytmu ukierunkowanego na zagadnienie skróconej symbolicznej reprezentacji szeregów czasowych, a w szczególności na efektywne grupowanie szeregów. Idea propozycji polega na wykorzystaniu techniki PAA (piecewise aggregate approximation) z następną analizą korelacji otrzymanych segmentów szeregu. Podstawowym celem artykułu jest modyfikacja techniki PAA ukierunkowana na możliwość dalszego grupowania szeregów w ich skróconym zapisie. Próbowano również znaleźć odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: „Czy zadanie grupowania szeregów czasowych w ich oryginalnej postaci ma sens?”, „Ile pamięci można oszczędzić, stosując nowy algorytm?”. Efektywność nowego algorytmu została zbadana na empirycznych zbiorach danych szeregów czasowych. Wyniki pokazują, że nowa propozycja jest dość efektywna przy bardzo nikłym stopniu parametryzacji wymaganym od użytkownika.
In recent years a couple of methods aimed at time series symbolic representation have been introduced or developed. This activity is mainly justified by practical considerations such memory savings or fast data base searching. However, some results suggest that in the subject of time series clustering symbolic representation can even upgrade the results of clustering. The article contains a proposal of a new algorithm directed at the task of time series abridged symbolic representation with the emphasis on efficient time series clustering. The idea of the proposal is based on the PAA (piecewise aggregate approximation) technique followed by segmentwise correlation analysis. The primary goal of the article is to upgrade the quality of the PAA technique with respect to possible time series clustering (its speed and quality). We also tried to answer the following questions. Is the task of time series clustering in their original form reasonable? How much memory can we save using the new algorithm? The efficiency of the new algorithm was investigated on empirical time series data sets. The results prove that the new proposal is quite effective with a very limited amount of parametric user interference needed.

Poetic expressions may seem somewhat removed from a pragmatist social science, but the history of the development of Western civilization is such that the (knowingly) fictionalized renderings of human life-worlds that were developed in the classical Greek era (c. 700-300 BCE) appear to have contributed consequentially to a scholarly emphasis on the ways in which people engage the world. Clearly, poetic writings constitute but one aspect of early Greek thought and are best appreciated within the context of other developments in that era, most notably those taking shape in the realms of philosophy, religion, rhetoric, politics, history, and education. These poetic materials (a) attest to views of the human condition that are central to a pragmatist philosophy (and social science) and (b) represent the foundational basis for subsequent developments in literary criticism (including theory and methods pertaining to the representation of human enacted realities in dramaturgical presentations). Thus, while not reducing social theory to poetic representation, this statement considers the relevance of early Greek poetics for the development of social theory pertaining to humanly enacted realities.
