Opis:
Among Edvard Munch’s many portraits of Henrik Ibsen, the famous Norwegian dramatist and Munch’s senior by a generation, one stands out. Large in scope and with a characteristic pallet of roughly hewed gray blue, green and yellow, the sketch is given the title Geniuses. Munch’s sketch shows Ibsen, who had died a few years earlier, in the company of Socrates and Nietzsche. The picture was a working sketch for a painting commissioned by the University. While Munch, in the end, chose a different motif for his commission, it is nonetheless significant that he found it appropriate to portrait the Norwegian dramatist in the company of key European philosophers, indeed the whole span of the European philosophical tradition from its early beginnings to its most controversial spokesman in the late 1800s. In my article, I seek to take seriously Munch’s bold and original positioning of Ibsen in the company of philosophers. Focusing on Hedda Gabler-a play about love lost and lives unlived-I explore the aesthetic-philosophical ramifications of Ibsen’s peculiar position between realism and modernism. This position, I suggest, is also reflected in Munch’s sketches for the set design for Hermann Bahr’s 1906 production of the play.

Opis:
The social class which was the spiritus movens of rapid economic transformation in the lands of the Kingdom of Poland in the nineteenth century was the bourgeoisie. In the public sphere, there is still a strong conviction among contemporary Poles about the moral defects of capitalists, for whom, according to the prevailing stereotypes, only profit was important. The author of this article, to contradict this claim, gives an example of the life and actions of Jan Gottlieb Bloch (1836–1902). The aim of the article is to present the broad economic, social and scientific activity of Bloch as a member of the bourgeoisie of the Kingdom of Poland. The author also points to the need for further research on the work of Jan Bloch, especially in the field of his economic and irenological writing.

Opis:
This essay reconsiders interpretations of Shakespeare by Irish writer Anna Murphy Jameson and the American Transcendentalist Margaret Fuller. Developing an informal method in which the voice of the female critic rallies in defence of Shakespeare’s heroines, they intervene in a male-dominated intellectual sphere to model alternative forms of women’s learning that take root outside of formalized institutional channels. Jameson, in Shakespeare’s Heroines, invokes the language of authentic Romantic selfhood and artistic freedom, recovering Shakespeare’s female characters from earlier critical aspersion as figures of exceptional female eloquence and resilience; she adopts a conversational critical voice to involve her female readers in the interpretative process itself. Fuller, in Woman in Nineteenth Century, speaks authoritatively as a kind of female prophet to argue that women’s creative reinterpretations of Shakespeare point the way to a revitalization of a sterile literary critical field. Both writers call for the reform of women’s education through revisionist interpretations of history attuned to the representation of female exceptionalism. In embryonic form, these nineteenth century feminist writings formulate a persistent strain of socially engaged, activist feminist criticism of Shakespeare.

Opis:
Catholic modernism, an intellectual trend that developed within the Catholic Church in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, sought to rebuild the Church and to modernise its teaching methods. It combined tradition and modernity, and it was at the level of literature that such link was made – a medium whose effect on religious belief was significant. Due to its reformist tendencies modernism was often called “the new Protestantism.” St. Francis was also the patron of the quest for renewal. A resurgence of interest in the saint was noted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century among Anglicans, Lutherans, and Protestants. St. Francis represented such qualities that all Christians, regardless of denomination, see as a perfect incarnation of the principles of the Gospel. Protestants (followed by Catholic modernists) portrayed him as a reformer of the thirteenth-century Church and a patron of the “new reformation.” In a natural way, he combined and renewed, or actually restored the teaching of Christ. In the Young Poland era, the approach to St. Francis was largely shaped by the book Life of St. Francis of Assisi by Paul Sabatier. Traces of its reception can be found in most Catholic publications of the period devoted to the life and work of the saint.

Opis:
1890–1918 was a time of intensive development of editorial works on literary texts, continuing workshop and ideological explorations in publishing work that started in the early nineteenth century. Chief editorial tasks and objectives were defined, principles were developed and a growing number of new editions of Old Polish works were made available. Did introducing them into readership and social awareness contributed to changing the outlook of the modernist era? Did historical phenomena, national traditions and myths found in traditional Polish literary works became a component of the modernist worldview thanks to those editions? The article is an invitation to examine an important aspect of publishing movement of 1890–1918, arguing that finding an answer to the question about the place of editions of Old Polish literature in the cultural and literary life as well as intellectual and artistic profile of Polish modernism may contribute to its specificity being recognised within European culture.

Opis:
Community of Poles as civil servants in the public administration of Russian Empire on the Lithuanian-Belarusian territory in the nineteenth century is a white stain in Polish historiography. A cursory evaluation of the group might show servility of the group but insightful look at individual biographies raises doubts of its absolute submission. Many of the officials, losing their hope for political change in the territory annexed to Russia, tried to find their place in the reality after partition on the one hand, and not lose their national identity on the other. Certainly, tsarist’s officials of Polish origin were not a monolith. This is a group, which could be devoted to in-depth studies without stereotypical thinking about „a foreign uniform”.
