Opis:
The main goal of the paper is to discuss whether a contest, as an educational tool, can develop the creativity of participants when the main goal of the students may be to win. A 24HOURS contest was implemented as a case study. Three methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the 24HOURS contest: a written questionnaire, individual in-depth interviews, and an online questionnaire. Results proved that the contest was unsatisfactory in increasing students’ creativity, as they were oriented to win, or to acquire knowledge, rather than to cooperate or interact with representatives of other student teams. The investigation confirmed the tutors’ enabling responsibility for both cooperation and creativity during the contest. However, expectations of tutor engagement caused concern and their role should, therefore, have been more clearly defined. Analysis of the case study presented in this paper can provide pedagogues with insight into the design and implementation of contests as educational tools.

Shakespeare is among the most important non-Turkish authors in Turkey and has become an indispensable part of the theatre repertory and the educational curricula. Yet, the origins of Shakespeare studies have a complicated legacy dating back to the imperialistic motivations of foreign schools in Ottoman Turkey. However, starting with the republican period, Shakespeare productions and studies were utilised to spread the progressive reforms of the republic that were maintained through the theatres and the various universities primarily set in Istanbul and in Ankara. Accordingly, this article will explore the origins of the academic study of Shakespeare in Turkey.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the motivation and expectations of students from Ukraine with respect to higher education (HE) in the field of tourism. A survey questionnaire was created to be used by a target group in order to obtain their views. Research has shown that the main motive (60%) for studying in Poland was the desire to study and work at the same time. In reality HE students combined degree study and work in even more cases, and 58% of the work involved the tourism industry. Almost half of the students surveyed intend to remain in Poland following graduation. Those who expressed a desire to leave for other countries most often identified Spain and Germany. At the same time, most stated that they would like to work in professions associated with tourism including work in travel agencies and hotels.

This article analyzes the interaction between the careers of people working in artistic and intellectual worlds. Two ethnographic studies constitute the basis for the analysis of career building in connection with the careers of other actors. The concept of career coupling represents the process by which professional success is achieved through the forging of relationships between novice and elite actors. Career coupling in the social world of virtuoso musicians is compared to that of career coupling in the social world of elite scientists. It was found that both groups achieve status in a similar fashion by moving through a three-stage process: (1) matching; (2) active collaboration; and, (3) passive collaboration. It is argued that the analysis of career coupling developed here can also be transferred to other professional fields.

This paper presents employers’ opinions concerning competencies they expect of graduates of Faculties of Economics with elements of environmental protection. In order to provide empirical input, we conducted a questionnaire-based study among 200 top managers of (mostly) businesses located in the Lodz region (voivodeship), including 194 enterprises and 6 entities do not involved in business but whose activities are, directly or indirectly, linked with environmental protection. The findings of our study demonstrate that while both soft and professional competencies acquired in the course of university studies are important to employers, the respondents valued soft competencies more. They found foreign languages to be the most important, although surprisingly they also attached high importance to a good command of Polish. When assessing university curricula, employers indicated that general courses, the foundations of a university education, remain important as a basis to improve the professional skills of university graduates and to reinforce their position in the labour market.

Opis:
The changes that contemporary organisations go through result in a shift in management conduct, organisation and management of human resources. Such trends are observable in public higher education institutions in Poland. Organisations striving to actively compete in a dynamic environment, and answer its needs, introduce amendments in various areas of their operations. Endeavours to improve the quality of teaching and ensure more efficient and effective management of higher education institutions are becoming ubiquitous. Changes are not only “cosmetic” in nature, but regularly interfere with organizational culture – and, as such, are challenging and implemented over a long time frame. Organisational culture, with values at its core, is a resultant of many factors, including values brought in by an organisation’s employees. For higher education institutions, this aspect is an important starting point for further reflections. The ethos of academics, through historical determinants, is based on honesty and openness – some key values that form the basis for decision making in diverse areas of operations. This article focuses on honesty and openness as desirable social values and components of a wider social capital – trust, with the benefits of professing trust taken into account as well. At the same time, an attempt has been made to show the role of those values in the context of the work of public higher education institution employees. Theoretical considerations are backed by illustrative quantitative empirical research. Research has been conducted among employees in the positions of researchers, educators and researcher-educators in all higher education institutions operating in Lodz, Poland.

I compare experiences and class identity formation of working-class college students in college. I find that all working-class students experience college as culturally different from their home cultures and have different understandings and interpretations of this difference based on race, class, and gender positions. I find that students develop fundamentally different strategies for navigating these cultural differences based on the strength or weakness of their structural understandings of class and inequality in US society. Students with strong structural understandings develop Loyalist strategies by which they retain close ties to their home culture. Students with more individual understandings of poverty and inequality develop Renegade strategies by which they actively seek immersion in the middleclass culture of the college. These strategic orientations are logical responses to the classed nature of our educational system and have very significant implications for the value and experience of social mobility in an allegedly meritocratic society.

The research problem described in the title of the article can be formulated as a question: by what means is the idea of the University’s social responsibility implemented at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in its operation? We are talking here about the idea of sensu largo, because universities’ social responsibility requires an even more complete theoretical conceptualization. This idea refers to the theoretically recognized, complex, constantly changing, and multi-directional and network cooperation between the University and the heterogeneous environment. The conclusions of this submission may be a stimulus for further research on the developing concept of university social responsibility. The first part of the article is based on the analysis of the literature of the subject, while the second part examines documents.

Social competences are one of the most important areas of an individual’s functioning in the surrounding environment. They are so important that, apart from knowledge and skills, they have become one of higher education’s outcomes. The level of social competence depends not only on the internal qualities of an individual but also on environmental factors. This article aims to present the findings of research concerning the level of social competences attained by students of tourism and recreation throughout their higher education and comprises quantitative and qualitative research methods. The results indicate that students show only average levels of social competence even though their academic teachers declare that education outcomes have been accomplished in this field.

Opis:
This article discusses an attempt at analysis of regional diversity in Poland in 2001 with respect to the level of the higher educational system. The first part of this report deals with ranking provinces with respect to the level of the higher educational system, measured by a synthetic variable. This variable is the result of 10 characteristics, weighted according to their influence on higher education. Selection of those characteristics was dictated by their use by experts as well as their availability in regional statistics data. In the second part of the article, the author presents dusters formed by provinces in two-dimensional areas: the first dimension indicates the level of higher educational system whereas the other dimension describes the socio-economic situation in the regions. This situation is represented by factors that have been singled out (by principal component analysis) as key among 21 characteristics, which potentially influence the higher educational system. The discovery of commonalities according to which those clusters are formed is the main purpose of the article.
W drugiej części artykułu autor przedstawia grupowanie województw w dwuwymiarowych przestrzeniach, gdzie pierwszy wymiar to poziom szkolnictwa wyższego, drugi natomiast opisuje sytuację społeczno-gospodarczą w regionach.

Opis:
Adequate staffing of university studies with qualified academics was completed thanks to the reimplementation of three-stage university education during the post-socialist restoration of higher education in the Czech Republic. Thus, the doctoral degree of education has been attained by more than four-fifths of academic staff, with over two-fifths of them being aged 50+. The current course of university studies, including doctoral study programs, is influenced by their focus on educational and research strategy. With regards to the regulations for graduating in doctoral studies, doctoral candidates act as homo oeconomicus following neo-liberal educational policy. The conditions for doctoral studies, namely, those in educational sciences, thus lead to paradoxes caused by the current higher educational policy. The objective of the paper is to analyze the neoliberal set-up of the higher education policy of the Czech Republic in the field of doctoral studies in educational sciences in particular and its possible impacts in the area of labor-market integration of graduates and university training of academics.

The purpose of this article is to present opportunities for research which show the common ground between tourism and physical culture using approaches and methods worked out and applied in economics. Attention has been concentrated on the category of ‘product’, treated here as a theoretical concept by means of which it is possible to present a structure of tourism trip. This will include the part that refers to those values and human activities related to physical culture. An attempt to identify the social perception of the attributes that describe a tourism trip was made by an empirical study using conjoint analysis on students in higher education in Kraków. The results show that those who participate in tourism enriched by physical activity, prefer trips saturated with attributes such as the required level of courage, the testing of psychological and physical abilities, rivalry with others or nature, an element of adventure, a high level of physical activity, access to sports and leisure facilities, and contact with nature. But at the same time they prefer a low level of risk to health or life. It was noted, however, that related to the latter female and male preferences vary.
