    What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

    Podlasie, a historical and geographical region in north-eastern Poland, serves as both an external (interstate, European Union) and internal (ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural) borderland. The primary aim of the article is to present historical and political conditions, national and cultural diversification of the Podlasie region, an analysis of current changes in ethnic and religious structure of the inhabitants as well as analysis of the consequences of changes of geopolitical circumstances in mutual relationships between different communities. Borderlands, especially those highly diverse in terms of nationality, religion, language and culture, are often identified with unstable, conflict-prone areas with past and present antagonism between nations sharing them. This belief has intensified over the last few decades when nationalisms, separatist tendencies and historical conflicts got sparked again in numerous regions of Central and Eastern Europe. However, not all European borderlands have to be stereotypically identified with areas of conflict, resentment and even hatred among the peoples inhabiting them. This is the case, among others, in Podlasie, where there are centuries-old traditions of cohabitation of diverse communities.

    Literary renditions of cities have always gravitated towards the spatial imagination and its ethical counterpart outside the textual space. This paper explores the multicultural geography of the North Indian city Allahabad (recently renamed Prayagraj) observed through Neelum Saran Gour’s postcolonial narratives Allahabad Aria and Invisible Ink, projecting the narrative alignment of spatial aesthetics and cultural ethics. Interrogating the spatial dimensions of a “narrative world” within narrative theory (Ryan) and its interdisciplinary crossover with cultural geography (Sauer; Mitchell; Anderson et al.), the article seeks to examine Gour’s literary city not simply as an objective homogeneous representation, but as a “kshetra” of spatio-cultural cosmos of lived traditions, memories, experiences and collective attitudes of its people, in the context of E. V. Ramakrishnan’s theoretical reflections. The article proposes new possibilities of adapting the Indian concept “kshetra” to spatial literary studies; its aim is also to suggest a new source of knowledge about the city of Allahabad through a community introspection of “doing culture” in the texts, bringing into view people’s shared experiences, beliefs, religious practices and traditions as offshoots of the postcolonial ethos. The article aims to re-contextualize the city’s longstanding multicultural ethics in the contemporary times of crisis, which may affect a shift in the city’s relevance: from regional concern to large-scale significance within ethnically diverse South Asian countries and beyond.

    My discussion considers how crisis dramatically changes social relationships and interaction patterns within a multicultural context. Specifically, I note the inherent social asymmetry of multicultural configurations, thus rendering it vulnerable for the dominant ethnic/racial group, the ethnocracy, to exact symbolically and materialistically punitive measures against minorities during periods of national crisis. I situate my discussion of dramatically changed social interactions in the post- September 11, 2001 period, when the attacks on the World Trade Center towers triggered nativism against Arab Americans, or any group phenotypically similar to the construction of “Arab.” I note how this nativism is not new but is a historical and consistent articulation of the ethnocratic stratum that retracts the American identity and notions of citizenship away from minorities during times of national crisis. The discussion concludes with how American multiculturalism is still full of unresolved ethnic and racial symbolisms that hark back to nineteenth century attempts by the White power structure to idealize, culturally and phenotypically, the constitution of an “ideal” American.

    Multicultural policy has recently been undergoing a marked crisis and is subject to wide criticism. In the light of recent terrorist attacks it is often highlighted that the reason for such situations might be too much openness towards foreigners. Most European countries are changing their immigration and integration policies limiting their social security and restricting the possibilities of an influx of immigrants. Sweden, which is perceived as one of the most open and tolerant states in Europe also faces new challenges concerning the future of its multicultural policy. The crisis in tolerance towards foreigners is quite visible and it is obvious that the social moods in this state are evolving. Therefore, the aim of the article is to analyze changes in the attitude towards Swedish immigration and its integration policy in the light of the attack on the Charlie Hebdo weekly offices.

    The author points out that the idea of multiculturalism could not produce the expected effects, since the educational mechanisms of intercultural dialogue were not developed. In this context, the responsibility of education for shaping the process of dialogue is introduced. It starts with the abolition of the myth about the fall of the idea of multiculturalism and ends with the need to revitalize heterology, cosmopolitanism and transnationality. The first part of the text emphasizes the problem of marginalization of important problems related to the formation of multicultural societies and, in this context, also the responsibility of education for the creation of a culture of peace. Next, attention is paid to the need to give meaning to the philosophy of dialogue and to engage in internal dialogue in order to “liberate” oneself from military thoughts. It is pointed out that there is a need for active participation in three types of the dialogue (concerning information, negotiation and creation of humanity and peace). In the final part of the text, the Author emphasizes the responsibility of education for shaping and supporting the development of transnational and transcultural human beings in the ongoing dialogue of cultures.
    Autor zwraca uwagę, że idee wielokulturowości nie mogły przynieść oczekiwanych efektów, gdyż nie ukształtowano edukacyjnych mechanizmów dialogu międzykulturowego. W tym kontekście przedstawia odpowiedzialność edukacji za kształtowanie procesu dialogu, poczynając od niwelowania mitu o upadku idei multikulturalizmu, a kończąc na potrzebie rewitalizacji heterologii, kosmopolityzmu, transnarodowości. W pierwszej części tekstu podkreślono problem marginalizacji istotnych problemów, związanych z kształtowaniem się społeczeństw wielokulturowych i w tym kontekście z odpowiedzialnością edukacji za kreowanie kultury pokoju. Następnie zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę nadania znaczenia filozofii dialogu, prowadzenia dialogu wewnętrznego z samym sobą, aby „wyzwolić” się z myślenia militarnego. Wskazano na potrzebę aktywnego uczestnictwa w trzech rodzajach dialogu (informacyjnym, negocjacyjnym o kreującym rozwój ludzkości i zachowanie pokoju). W końcowej części podkreślono odpowiedzialność edukacji za kształtowanie i wspieranie w rozwoju człowieka będącego w ustawicznym dialogu kultur, człowieka transnarodowego i transkulturowego.

    This article discusses the representation of cultural plurality in the novels of two major French and Polish contemporary fiction writers: Michel Houellebecq and Jerzy Pilch. The aim of this essay it to present a comparative analysis of the different conceptions represented by these two writers. The influence of historical, cultural and religious particularities on Pilch's and Houellebecq's views on multiculturalism is also considered. Furthermore, by comparing Jerzy Pilch’s and Michel Houellebecq’s work, we examine two different perspectives: the first one, that of a member of a Polish religious minority, i.e. a Protestant and the second one, that of a notorious racist and Islamophobe.
    Niniejszy artykuł omawia przedstawienia pluralizmu kulturowego w powieściach dwóch ważnych, na gruncie francuskim i polskim, pisarzy współczesnych: Michela Houellebecqua i Jerzego Pilcha. Celem pracy jest analiza komparatywna różnych koncepcji przedstawionych przez tych dwóch autorów. Rozpatrywany jest także wpływ historycznych, kulturowych i religijnych okoliczności na ich poglądy dotyczące wielokulturowości. Ponadto, porównując dzieła Jerzego Pilcha i Michela Houellebecqua, badamy dwie różne perspektywy: członka polskiej mniejszości religijnej, tj. protestanta oraz notorycznego rasisty i islamofoba.

    The article attempts to estimate the influence of the geographical and political conditions on the transformation of a Sikhs community after the decolonisation of India in 1947. The authors have used, among other things, the results of their own field research, statistical analysis and scientific works. The main aim of the paper is to explain the specificity of the functioning of Sikhs who despite extremely unfavourable geopolitical conditions and relatively small number have been able to maintain their own identity and achieve a level of social and economic development higher than average for India and Pakistan. Contemporary Sikhs are often perceived as both – a religious and national community. In general, their main characteristics are sharp cultural and moral distinction and very strong awareness of their identity. They manifestate strong bond to their region. Sikhs play crucial roles in social, political, and especially economic and military functioning of the state. Due to their concentration on the India-Pakistan borderland, strong militarisation and separatistic tendencies, Sikhs play crucial role in the domestic and foreign policy of India.
    W artykule podjęto próbę oszacowania wpływu warunków geograficznych i politycznych na transformację społeczności Sikhów po dekolonizacji Indii w 1947 roku. Autorzy wykorzystali, między innymi, wyniki własnych badań terenowych, analiz statystycznych i opracowań naukowych. Głównym celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie specyfiki funkcjonowania Sikhów, którzy pomimo wyjątkowo niesprzyjających warunków geopolitycznych i stosunkowo niewielkiej populacji byli w stanie utrzymać własną tożsamość i osiągnąć poziom rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego wyższy niż średnia dla Indii i Pakistanu. Współcześni Sikhowie są często postrzegani zarówno jako wspólnota religijna, jak i narodowa. Zasadniczo ich głównymi cechami są wyraźne różnice kulturowe i moralne oraz bardzo silna świadomość ich tożsamości. Przejawiają silną więź ze swoim regionem. Sikhowie odgrywają kluczową rolę w społecznym, politycznym, a zwłaszcza gospodarczym i wojskowym funkcjonowaniu państwa. Z powodu koncentracji na pograniczu indyjsko-pakistańskim, silnej militaryzacji i tendencji separatystycznych Sikhowie odgrywają kluczową rolę w polityce wewnętrznej i zagranicznej Indii.

    Zamieszkujemy rozmaite miejsca, a nasze doświadczenia zmieniają się wraz z ekologicznymi, geograficznymi, historycznymi uwarunkowaniami. Powoduje to różnice pod względem wiedzy i umiejętności, stylów życia, wartości, które stanowią o kulturowej różnorodności. Kontakt pomiędzy ego a innymi stwarza poczucie zagrożenia, ponieważ wszystko, co pochodzi z innego kraju, wydaje się obce i groźne. To dlatego postrzegamy innych w negatywnym świetle. Potrzebujemy czasu, aby właściwie ich ocenić, a w konsekwencji zbliżyć się do nich i nauczyć się żyć obok. Ten proces, obserwowany już od czasów starożytnych Greków i Rzymian, nie był w stanie wykorzenić strachu prowadzącego do unikania „innych”, pomimo utworzenia takich pojęć jak tolerancja i dialog kultur. Pozostaje to wciąż dla ludzkości wyzwaniem, czemu dają świadectwo niektóre opowieści podróżnicze.
    We live in diverse places with variable experiences due to ecological, geographical, historical environment. That creates difference in terms of knowledge and skills, lifestyles, values, which constitutes cultural diversity. The contact between ego and others creates a feeling of insecurity because any foreign thing seems to be strange and threatening. This explains why we have always a negative view about others. We need a period of appreciation and recognition, for being closed with and learn a share living. This exercise which took place from Greeks and Romans Antiquity has not succeeded in exorcizing the fear and avoidance of others, despite the invention of some notions like tolerance and culture dialogue. That is still being a challenge for humanity as it is narrated by some travel accounts.

    This paper presents the results of research on the issue of multiculturalism in the aspect of historical spatial layouts and selected objects of material heritage on the example of Dobroń community. The authors focused their attention on the genetic and settlement analysis and morphological reconstruction of selected villages, mainly related to so called „Olęder” and Frederician colonization from the 18th and 19th centuries. The article also presents the history and contemporary state of preservation of some objects associated with particular national and religious groups that left a clear traces in the cultural landscape of the examined area.
    Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań dotyczących zagadnienia wielokulturowości wsi w aspekcie kształtowania historycznych układów przestrzennych oraz wybranych obiektów materialnego dziedzictwa na przykładzie gminy Dobroń. W opracowaniu skoncentrowano uwagę na dokonaniu analizy genetyczno-osadniczej i rekonstrukcji morfologicznej wybranych wsi, związanych głównie z kolonizacją olęderską i fryderycjańską w XVIII i XIX wieku. W artykule omówiono także dzieje i współczesny stan zachowania obiektów, powiązanych z konkretnymi grupami narodowymi oraz religijnymi, które pozostawiły wyraźny ślad w krajobrazie kulturowym na badanym obszarze.

    Wydaje się, że zarówno u wyspiarskich jak i podróżujących autorów własne wyobrażenia odgrywały zasadniczą rolę w odbiorze wyspiarskiej kultury. Świadectwa te prowadzą do krzyżowania się kultur, a różne perspektywy stanowią szansę wzbogacenia kultury wysp oraz ochrony jej dziedzictwa. Piśmienność jest zarazem świadkiem i strażnikiem kultury. Czy jednakże autor, będący socjologiem, może nam dostarczyć obiektywnej wizji obserwowanej kultury? Jeśli w „Bildungsroman” wpływ kraju na jednostkę jest oczywisty, można także mówić o różnorodności kulturowej intrapersonalnej. Ta wielokulturowość uwalnia od uprzedzeń każdą jednostkę, która obawia się utraty swojej tożsamości. Podtrzymywanie wyspiarskiej kultury może okazać się jedyną drogą do zahamowania jej globalizacji.
    It appears that both insulars and travelling authors have interpreted the insular culture through their own depictions. These testimonies lead to cultural cross-fertilization. These diverse perspectives are an opportunity for enrichment of the islands’ cultures and a chance for them to preserve their heritage. Literacy is both a witness and a keeper of a culture. However, can the author, a sociologist, provide an objective view of the observed culture? If, in “Bildungsromans”, the influence of the land on the individual is obvious, the plurality of cultures is also observed within persons. This plurality of culture creates an open mindedness in each individual, which threatens the loss of his unique identity. Maintaining an insular culture may be the only way to delay its globalization.

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie warunków koniecznego dziś otwarcia procesów edukacyjnych na integrację z zewnątrz, która modyfikuje znaczenie poczucia tożsamości wspólnotowej. Procesy te dotyczą zachowań społecznych w określonych przestrzeniach symbolicznych świata wielokulturowego i obejmują: postawę szacunku dla wartości społeczno-politycznych, akceptację praw i obowiązków jednostki wobec państwa oraz organizacji międzynarodowych oraz zasad odpowiedzialnego współżycia społecznego. Potrzeba nauki życia w świecie pełnym różnic sprawia, że wychowanie międzykulturowe na każdym etapie kształcenia musi zająć miejsce ważne pośród zadań edukacyjnych szkoły, także szkoły wyższej. Argumentacja wpisana została w dyskurs nad istotą tożsamości inkluzywnej, zorientowanej w najnowszych badaniach regionalistycznych i podkreśla zagadnienia tolerancji, akceptacji Innego, dialogu międzykulturowego. Formułuje się również warunki wprowadzenia różnicy kulturowej do „własnego myślenia”. Autorka artykułu przedstawia praktyczne możliwości wykorzystywania na lejcach w szkole podstawowej i średniej literatury z kręgu kulturowych zderzeń. Ukierunkowanie na komparacje – porównywanie tekstów literackich (i zjawisk) z różnych obszarów kulturowych, dotyczą możliwych na lekcja polskiego przykładów malarstwa, rzeźby, architektury czy muzyki, Taka nauka prowadzi uczniów przez różne obszary graniczne czy sfery „pomiędzy” i dzięki temu może służyć kreatywnemu myśleniu o kulturze swojej i innych. Idee międzykulturowe jako integralny składnik wychowania kulturowego współczesnego ucznia każdego poziomu edukacji nie ma bowiem dzisiaj alternatywy.
    The aim of the article is to examine the conditions of educational processes which need to be opened for external integration which greatly modifies the sense of community identity. These processes concern the social behaviour in certain symbolic spaces of multicultural world, and they include one’s respect towards social and political values, acceptance of laws and duties of single people towards a nation and international organisations, as well as the rules of responsible social coexistence. The need to learn how to live in the world of diversity causes that intercultural education needs to be seen as an important educational aim of any type of school. The author’s arguments include the discourse on the essence of inclusive identity, the current research on regionalism; the arguments highlight the notion of tolerance, the acceptance of the Other, and the intercultural dialogue. The author establishes the conditions of introducing cultural difference into “one’s own thinking”. She also demonstrates practical opportunities of making use of literature of cultural encounters in primary and high schools. Comparative approach – comparing literary texts and phenomena taken from various cultural spheres – includes examples from painting, sculpture, architecture and music. Such method guides the students and takes them through various areas or spheres “in between”; as a result, the method may facilitate creative thinking about one’s culture and that of the others. Intercultural ideas are an integral element of cultural education of contemporary students of all levels of education; so far there has been no alternative to them.

    Artykuł przedstawia syntetycznie historię języka polskiego jako obcego, dotychczas pomijaną w opracowaniach historycznojęzykowych. Autorka przeanalizowała wszystkie istniejące opracowania książkowe dotyczące historii języka polskiego, zwracając uwagę na wzmianki i omówienia podręczników, słowników oraz gramatyk języka polskiego przeznaczonych dla cudzoziemców. Podkreśla, że w dobie średniopolskiej takie opracowania pisali nie Polacy, lecz cudzoziemcy (Niemcy i Francuzi). W tekście znalazły się też informacje dotyczące ekspansji języka polskiego w XVII/XVIII wieku na ziemie wschodnie i północne Rzeczpospolitej Obojga Narodów, także poza jej granicami. Na końcu artykułu autorka przedstawia ogólną ideę przyszłej monografii poświęconej historii nauczani języka polskiego jako obcego.
    This article presents a synthesis of the history of Polish as a foreign language, which has previously been omitted in historical and linguistic studies. The author analysed all existing studies published in book form on the history of the Polish language focusing on the indications and discussions of handbooks, dictionaries and grammar compendia of the Polish language intended for foreigners. She stresses that in the Middle Polish age such resources were written not by Poles but foreigners (Germans and the French). In the text, she also includes information on the expansion of the Polish language in the 17th and 18th centuries onto the eastern and northern lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and outside its borders. The author concludes her article with a general outline of a future monograph devoted to the history of teaching Polish as a foreign language.
