    The prescriptions on how to eulogize the city, provided in 3rd century by Menander Rhetor in his treatise On Epideictic, reflect the encomiastic convention according to which Pindar composed his poetic encomia urbis. Among the topoi that the poet applies to praise Athens one can list the ancient origin of the city, including the identification of its founder, the practiced habits concerning the form of politeia as well as those concerning the professional skills and abilities of the inhabitants, their virtues and deeds in war and in peace. In Pindar’s victory odes, the praise of the city is always subordinated to the praise of an individual victor. Therefore, the poet praises the outstanding individuals, members of aristocratic families, whose values and achievements adorn their city, and who inherited their excellence from heroic ancestors, mythical founders of Athens. In dithyrambic poems, composed for Athenian festivals and performed by kyklioi choroi of men and boys representing the communities of phylai, polis-encomium is a form of self-praise, an expression of 5th century Athenian ideology, which makes citizens proud of their city’s power. Consequently, Pindar focuses on praising Athens’ military prowess and the dominant position which the city achieved in the Greek world, its institutions, its beauty and public buildings.

    In this article Plato’s views on goodness of state (polis) are investigated. The study involves a reconstruction of three ways in which Plato describes the goodness of state. Firstly, the metaphorical account is analysed on the basis of some examples from Statesman and from Republic. Secondly, the approach to the concept of goodness that is strictly connected to the concept of justice (which is the leitmotiv of Republic) is considered. Lastly, the paper includes the examination of the relation between the concept of goodness and the law on one hand, and the structure of Forms on the other hand. Deliberation on the role of the metaphor (as a conceptual phenomenon), based especially on the juxtaposition of poleis’ political systems and citizens’ characters (eighth book of Republic), leads to the conclusion that there are three ways in which Plato conceives of state, mixed together in the three literary descriptions. Reductionist point of view that can be associated with Santas’s “functional theory of the good” puts emphasis on citizens’ natural needs. Within this standpoint state can be regarded merely as a form of human social life, and the goodness of state is simply a metaphor. From holistic perspective, contrary to the reductionist standpoint, state is treated as a separate, or even living, entity consisting of the citizens as its elements, and having its own interests. This approach gives priority to the goodness of state, which is primal in relation to the goodness of citizen. Probably, the most representative for Plato’s way of thinking is the paradigmatic point of view, which is present in his Theory of Forms. From this angle, state and human soul are isomorphic objects. Therefore they are subjects of the same attributes, connected with virtues (aretai). However, Plato does not explicitly declare which conceptualisation should be regarded as the most adequate. This makes Plato’s political theory incoherent, and may be the reason why it is so controversial.

    Coraz więcej zagranicznych firm inwestuje w Polsce, co przyczynia się do rozpowszechnienia nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego w biznesie. Artykuł opisuje specyfikę kursów biznesowych na podstawie modelu glottodydaktycznego P. Gębala. Na tymże modelu została również przeprowadzona analiza błędów popełnianych przez nauczycieli w nauczaniu biznesowym. Niestety, wiele kursów biznesowych odbywa się bez uwzględnienia szczególnych potrzeb uczącego się, czyli dorosłego pracującego w Polsce. Bardzo często zdarza się również, że nauczyciele nie posiadają przygotowania teoretycznego do nauczania języków specjalistycznych, co skutkuje licznymi błędami popełnianymi w czasie prowadzenia zajęć biznesowych. Tezy artykułu oparte są na badaniach ankietowych, wywiadach oraz obserwacjach uczestniczących, a także na własnym doświadczeniu autorki jako lektora JPJO.
    In the past years, the economic growth has encouraged many foreign companies to move their businesses to Poland which resulted in an increasing number of foreigners living and working in our country. Some of them not only decide to work here, but also to learn Polish language and culture, which leads to an increased demand for business Polish language courses. The article presents the characteristic of business Polish language courses according to the model of glottodidactics by P. Gębal. This model was also the base for the analysis of the mistakes the teachers make during such courses. Unfortunately, many business courses are taught with disregard to the special needs of the learner, who is an adult working in Poland. It also happens very often that the teachers do not have the theoretical preparation for teaching languages for specific purposes. The article is based on surveys, interviews, and observations. Also, the author herself is a teacher of Polish for business purposes.

    W niniejszym artykule podejmuję próbę optymalizacji metod eliminowania błędów językowych, jakie popełniane są najczęściej przez studentów germanistyki na zajęciach z niemiecko-polskich tłumaczeń ustnych. Przedstawione tu propozycje bazują na moim wieloletnim doświadczeniu zawodowym nauczyciela akademickiego oraz tłumacza. W procesie korygowania błędów językowych staram się na bieżąco zwracać uwagę studentów na błędy językowe, jakie popełniają oni w trakcie prowadzonych przeze mnie zajęć tłumaczeniowych. Nie koryguję jednak ich błędów sama, lecz angażuję do tej korekty przede wszystkim samych studentów, gdyż uważam, że tylko w ten sposób mogą oni zyskać pełną świadomość popełnianych przez siebie błędów. Ma to bowiem według mnie bardzo istotne znaczenie w dążeniu do optymalizacji poprawności tłumaczenia oraz w dbałości o poprawność językową, tym bardziej że studenci popełniają błędy niestety także w języku polskim, który dla przeważającej większości jest językiem ojczystym.
    In the paper, I attempt to optimize the elimination techniques of the most frequent language mistakes made by students of German studies during German-Polish interpreting classes. The suggestions which are presented in the paper are based on my long professional experience as an university teacher and a translator. In the process of the error correction, I systematically try to draw students’ attention to the mistakes they make during my translation classes. I do not correct the mistakes myself but I involve the students in the correction process, because I think that only in such a way they can be fully aware of the mistakes they make. I believe such awareness helps optimize the correctness of translation and supports the attention to language correctness, especially that the students also make mistakes in the Polish language which is, after all, the native language for most them.
