The purpose of the article/hypothesis: The purpose of the article was to indicate the results of operations of deposit guarantee systems in Russia and the USA. The research hypothesis was that the deposit guarantee system in Russia during the 2004–2018 research period was more heavily burdened with guarantee activities.Methodology: The article is largely based on a review, analysis and synthesis selected publications and available statistical data, and also expanded on the conclusions of the authors and the results of research in the discussed area.Results of the research: The results of the conducted research indicate a high burden on the institution guaranteeing deposits in Russia (DIS). This is primarily the result of actions aimed at stabilizing the Russian banking sector.

The aim of the article is to build a model describing the relationship between the economic growth and military activity of the USA. The model is a proposition of a formal, abstract and deductive approach towards the abovementioned relationship between war and economic growth, based on the example of the USA. The research is based on the results of previous empirical investigations. The inconclusiveness of empirical research suggests a need for an interpretation in a wider context of social reality.
Celem artykułu jest zbudowanie modelu opisującego mechanizm relacji zachodzących pomiędzy wzrostem gospodarczym Stanów Zjednoczonych a aktywnością militarną tego państwa. Model jest matematycznie wyrażonym, abstrakcyjnym i dedukcyjnym podejściem do problematyki relacji między wzrostem gospodarczym a wojną na przykładzie USA. Badania przeprowadzono na podstawie wyników wcześniejszych badań empirycznych. Niekompletność wniosków z badań empirycznych skłania do ich interpretacji w szerszym kontekście badanej rzeczywistości społecznej.

The problems of workers’ wages taken by the Catholic Church in the United States of America are interesting issues from the point of view of the ethics of economic life and the development of Catholic social thought. The interpretation of the main Catholic social ideas contained in Leo XIII’s encyclical letter Rerum novarum was made by Father John Augustine Ryan (1896–1945), who soon became a major proponent of the idea that a good economic policy can flow only with good ethics. In the history of the United States of America, the turn of 19th and 20th centuries was a time of the development of labor unions, associations, and workers’ organizations, consolidating efforts to achieve equitable remuneration (a living wage) and regulate working conditions. It was also a time of struggling with the ideas of socialism and nationalism. The Catholic Church played a significant role in the discourse on these issues, including the influence of John A. Ryan. His efforts led to one of the most important interpretations of economic life: The Program of Social Reconstruction (1919), and some postulates can be found in the legislation of the New Deal.

The business of investment banking is trending toward one-stop shopping and globalization. This article presents the history and the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which determine present level of development of investment banking. The 1933 Banking Act combined a bill sponsored by Representative Steagall to establishing federal deposit insurance with a bill sponsored by Senator Glass to segregate the banking and securities industries. More commonly known as the Glass-Steagall Act, is distinguished between: commercial banking, which is the business of taking deposits and making loans and investment banking, which is the business of underwriting and dealing in securities. In 1999 Congress passed the Financial Services Competition Act, eroded the Glass-Steagall separation of commercial and investment banking by permitting banks to have affiliated securities firms.

Model analizy klasyfikacji wielokrotnej (MCA) jest addytywnym modelem mającym szersze możliwości zastosowania niż, np. modele regresji liniowej. Przede wszystkim ze względu na to, gdyż zmienne w modelu MCA mogą pochodzić ze skal np. przedziałowej czy nominalnej. Poza tym, możliwe jest określenie stopnia wpływu zmiennych niezależnych zarówno przed jak i po uwzględnieniu zmiennych kontrolnych. Wreszcie, nie jest wymagane spełnienie założenia liniowej zależności pomiędzy rozważanymi zmiennymi. Artykuł przedstawia zastosowanie modelu MCA w analizie wpływu poziomu dochodu na planowaną płodność Amerykanek.

Próbując uzupełnić definicje obecne w literaturze przedmiotu, bada stereotyp użytkownika języka polskiego jako języka dziedziczonego („heritage speaker of Polish”) wśród amerykańskich studentów. Przedstawia listę stereotypowych cech użytkownika języka polskiego jako dziedziczonego, która ma być podstawą do utworzenia kwestionariusza zamkniętego i dalszych badań.
The author discusses a way to apply the notion of the linguistic stereotype in foreign language teaching. In attempt to supplement the existing definitions, she researches the linguistic stereotype of the heritage speaker of Polish among American students. She presents a list of features of a stereotypical heritage speaker of Polish. The list will serve as the basis for a closed questionnaire and further research.

The article presents the subject matter of delegating the Polish political workers to the USA, within the period of the Polish People’s Republic, which has not been well known so far. It includes the general description of them and allows to familiarize with the mechanisms of these outposts functioning. Due to the that subject matter had not been developed wider in scientific periodicals, the article represents a contribution to the development of further research. There are not only the United States of America worth considering, but more than 80 countries where there were the outposts of the Polish Workers’ Party and the Polish United Workers’ Party. It appears from the text that activities of the Polish authorities were aimed at propagating the communist ideology, even in democratic countries. It was then one of the many elements of the policy imposing the conditions of the socialist state. The basis of the preliminary archival research of the article are the materials made by the Foreign Department of the Central Committee, kept in the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw. The library with rich and extensive collections of records allowed to reconstruct the acting mechanisms of the discussed outposts.

Opis:
Monetary policy requires the selection of a specific inflation measure. Because of serious methodological differences between competing inflation indices, the choice of a particular index may have serious consequences for money supply, interest rates and nominal GDP. This article describes the theoretical assumptions of three competing inflation measures (CPI, core inflation, and the GDP deflator) in the context of monetary policy goals. The theoretical analysis is focused on explaining the causes for the differences between competing inflation measures (especially in the context of supply-side shocks) and specifying situations when they are optimal. The empirical analysis stresses significant differences between competing inflation measures, both short and long-term. The article ends with a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of different inflation measures in the context of central banking practices. The author presents his recommendations regarding the subject and his views about the future of inflation targeting.
Polityka monetarna wymaga wyboru odpowiedniego miernika. W literaturze przedmiotu zauważa się wiele różnic metodologicznych dotyczących konstrukcji wskaźnika inflacji. Dobór wskaźnika może wpływać na podaż pieniądza, stopy procentowe oraz nominalne PKB. Celem artykułu jest bliższe przyjrzenie się trzem najczęściej stosowanym wskaźnikom cen i poddanie ich ocenie w kontekście prowadzenia polityki monetarnej. W tym celu analizie empirycznej poddano gospodarki dwóch krajów – Japonii i USA.

Transatlantyckie Porozumienie w dziedzinie Handlu i Inwestycji (TTIP) jest przedmiotem kontrowersji, ale jednocześnie postrzegane jest jako jedno najbardziej wszechstronnych międzynarodowych porozumień o wolnym handlu i ochronie inwestycji. Wśród tematów wywołujących najwięcej krytyki ze strony różnych grup społecznych jest procedury rozstrzygania sporów między inwestorem a państwem (ISDS), jak również ich prawne konsekwencje dla krajów członkowskich UE. Mniej dyskutowaną kwestią są natomiast potencjalne implikacje porozumienia dla ekonomicznej współpracy między Unią Europejską a USA w dziedzinie przepływów inwestycji, a szczególności bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych (BIZ). Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie dyskusji dotyczącej ISDS i zbadanie wybranych ekonomicznych, politycznych i prawnych implikacji postanowień TTIP dla przepływów BIZ między partnerami. Propozycja Komisji Europejskiej, aby zmienić procedury ochrony inwestycji i rozstrzygania sporów, może być traktowana jako próba stworzenia bardziej transparentnego systemu, akceptowalnego dla różnych grup społecznych i bezpieczniejszego dla państw członkowskich. Efekty porozumienia dla BIZ między UE a USA mogą zależeć od efektów kreacji i przesunięcia handlu oraz „lustrzanych” efektów w sferze inwestycji.
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a controversial subject, but at the same time it is perceived to be the most comprehensive international agreement on free trade and investment protection. Among the topics that evoke criticism on the part of different social groups is the investor‑state dispute‑settlement (ISDS), as well as its legal consequences for the EU Member states. A less discussed issue is the potential implications of the agreement on the state of economic co‑operation between the European Union and the USA in the field of investment flows, with special reference to foreign direct investment (FDI). The aim of this paper is to present the discussion related to the ISDS and examine some of the economic, political and legal implications of TTIP provisions for FDI flows between the EU and the USA. The proposals of the European Commission to change the investment protection system might be treated as an attempt to make the system of arbitrage more transparent and convincing to societies, and safer for states. The effects of the TTIP agreement for FDI between both partners might be dependent on the scale of trade creation and diversion effects, and the mirror effects of investment creation and diversion under a free trade area.

Vietnam tries to respond to changing international situations, while attempting to stay in accordance with its own ambitions. China and the USA, the two superpowers, are the most important partners of Vietnamese strategy, which is determined by these two countries. The most important economic partner and ideological ally is China. But both sides have some serious problems to resolve such as maritime disputes. The situation imposes the need to seek counterbalance, a reliable ally who provides protection for its own interests. So Vietnam looks to balance improved relations with China while seeking deeper and multidimensional relations with the USA. The United States offers many advantages that are attractive to Vietnam. Inevitably, economic ties and new projects e.g. TPP, political, cultural and scientific cooperation make up these advantages. However, the United States can only provide support for the Spratly and Paracel Islands’ dispute and improving cooperative measures in the South China Sea with the presence of U.S. naval vessels and dialogue that assists Vietnam defense. Vietnam has again become an element in the American strategy of pivoting to Asia.

Despite the controversy over the effectiveness of assistance, it has become a permanent element of the international aid system. In 2017, Korean crisis escalated as Donald Trump began “war of words” with DPRK’s chairman Kim Jong-un. Each threat both leaders made might eventually be understood by the other party as a declaration of war. Donald Trump wanted to “clean up the mess” left by previous US administrations and solve the problem of North Korean nuclear program. However, his actions were inconsistent: he threatened in a very North Korean way “total destruction” only to emphasize later that it was not a “preferred option.” This article explores how “war of words” was a significant cause of the escalation of the Korean crisis.
