The study focused on possessive adjectives derived by means of the suffixes -ow(y), -in, -sk- formed from proper personal names in old and contemporary translations of the New Testament. Adjectival derivatives have been excerpted from 15 full and 6 incomplete translations of the New Testament, which date back to the 16th, 17th and 20th century. These translations differ in methods of translation (loose and word-for-word; philological, interlinear, ecumenical, dynamic and artistic) and its basis (Greek original or Latin Vulgate). The comparative analysis of old and contemporary translations shows that possessive adjectives, though used frequently in former times, are now going out of use and the substantival genitival attribute is taking their place. This phenomenon is reflected in processes linked with the development of the Polish language. Moreover, tracking the use of the type of adjectives analysed can be used to distinguish various methods of translation. The use of possessive adjectives in contemporary texts suggests respect for the tradition of translation, whereas the failure to use them – the modernization of Polish.

The article is a comparative analysis of three Polish translations of the Russian bard’s (Bulat Okudzhava’s) poem Chudesnyi vals translated by Irena Piotrovska and two different versions by Vitold Voroshilski. The author of this article concentrates on similarities and differences between the original text and its translations, as well as on poem’s musical aspects. The author also investigates how patterns and processes of lexical change determine and affect modification of poetic images and metaphors, concentrating especially on metamorphosis of a man into a plant shown in one of Okudzhava’s poems.

The paper analyses selected Polish translations of British and American press articles published in the magazine Forum in the years 1965 – 1989. In communist Poland, all such texts were censored before publication, which forced the translators to avoid content and language that could be banned by censors and to adopt a specific style of expression known as Newspeak. The paper lists the linguistic phenomena in the target language that represent features typical of Newspeak and identifies manipulative procedures which led to their occurrence, using a corpus of 25 English texts and their Polish translations.

Opis:
The real boom of Polish translations of foreign professional literature in the humanities is not a value in itself. In this field, as in many others, the quantity is not associated with quality, and there are so many misleading translations that they begin to threaten the quality of education. The author proposes criteria for assessing the quality of translation and presents illustrations of situations where these criteria are not met. Reasons of the decline in the quality of translations are examined in the area of complex conditionings, both economic and cultural, in particular those relating to the actual function of the so-called knowledge-based society. The skeptical overview of the knowledge-based society (and the mainstream sociology as its intellectual legitimation) is encouraged by the findings of the Foucauldian concept of 'governmentality'. Seen in this light, the knowledge-based society is proving to be one of the 'dispositivs' of neoliberal 'governmentality'. It would be worthwhile to consider whether there might be some reasonable alternative to the extensive model of publishing Polish versions of foreign scholarly literature enforced in recent years. The dominance of the 'knowledge-based society' cannot be eliminated for a number of reasons but it should be avoided whenever possible, also in the field of translation. For this purpose, a list of recommendations has been proposed, whose application could limit the negative trends in the quality of translations.

Justyna Dąbkowska-Kujko, autorka znakomitej monografii dawnych przekładów Lipsjusza na język polski, doświadczony filolog, pozwoliła sobie na pewną niekonsekwencję metodologiczną, mianowicie raz cytaty łacińskie dawała w oryginale i w polskim przekładzie, innym razem zamieszczała nietłumaczone. Monografia Dąbkowskiej jest praca cenną, wzbogaciła polską humanistykę dostarczając obszernych, wnikliwych informacji zarówno o życiu i twórczości Lipsjusza jak i o recepcji jego dzieł w dawnej Polsce, o jego wpływie na myśl polityczną i ugruntowanie neostoicyzmu w czasach Rzeczypospolitej szlacheckiej.
Justin Dąbkowska-Kujko, author of the excellent monograph on old translations of Lipsius into Polish, an experienced philologist, allowed herself for a certain methodologicalinconsistency, namely sometimes she quoted Latin phrases in the priginal and in Polish, and on other occasions she only cited them untranslated . Dąbkowska’s monograph is a valuable work, and an important contribution to the Polish humanities, providing a comprehensive, in-depth information about both the life and work of Lipsius, and about the reception of his works in the old Poland andtheir impact on political thought and reinforcing neostoicism in the days of the Polish Republic of nobility.

Jan Everaerts, poeta z Hagi, zwany z łacińska Ianusem Secundusem (1511–1536) pozostawił po sobie m.in. przekłady z greki na łacinę, epigramaty, listy i dzienniki podróży, ale znany jest głównie jako autor utworów miłosnych: księgi elegii zatytułowanej Iulia na cześć jego pierwszej ukochanej oraz słynnego zbioru 19 utworów pt. Basia (Pocałunki) poświęconego drugiej wielkiej miłości poety, którą opiewał pod imieniem Neaera. Basia były chętnie czytane, naśladowane i przekładane tak przez twórców współczesnych Secundusowi, jak i późniejszych. Do dzisiaj doczekały się one wielu mniej lub bardziej wiernych oryginałowi przekładów na języki europejskie. W przekładzie polskim mamy Pocałunki Arnolda Spaeta (1932) oraz Wiesława Sienkiewicza (1991), ten drugi to przekład izometryczny dokonany na podstawie przekładu filologicznego Ksawerego Sajewicza. Autorka artykułu prezentuje zarówno spostrzeżenia dotyczące wybranych polskich tłumaczeń, jak i próbkę własnego przekładu Secundusowych „buziaków”.
Jan Everaerts, a poet from The Hague, also known as Ianus Secundus (1511–1536) gave the posterity his translations from Greek into Latin, epigrams, letters and travel diaries among others, but he is mainly known as the author of love poetry: a book of elegies entitled Iulia in honor of his first beloved and the famous collection of 19 poems entitled Basia (The Kisses), written for the other lady of his heart, named Neaera. Basia were willingly read, imitated and translated both by contemporaries of Secundus and poets of the next centuries; there are plenty of translations of Basia into European languages, more or less faithful to the Latin original. In Polish we may read Pocałunki (The Kisses) by Arnold Spaet (1932) and by Wiesław Sienkiewicz (1991) – the latter is an isometric translation based on the philological one by Ksawery Sajewicz. The author of the paper presents both observations on selected Polish translations and a sample of her own translation of Secundus’ Basia.

Сергей Есенин – один из самых популярных русских поэтов в Польше. Интерес к его поэзии не угасает с момента появления первых переводов произведений Инония и Товарищ на польский язык в 1922 г. Несмотря на то, что вот уже на протяжении века литературное наследие Есенина профессионально исследуется польскими учеными, а также не перестает привлекать внимание реципиентов, в  творчестве русского поэта продолжают оставаться лакуны, требующие изучения. Автор статьи исследует роль запахов в стихотворениях Сергея Есенина, учитывая их изменения на протяжении всех этапов творчества – от юношеских произведений до последних текстов. Данный подход дает возможность представить не только мировоззрение поэта, его глубокую связь с русской культурой, но и проследить отражение в творчестве индивидуальной языковой картины мира. В статье также представлен относительно новый взгляд на рецепцию поэзии Есенина в Польше, а именно особенности и сложности перевода на польский язык ольфакторных образов, используемых поэтом для передачи глубоких эмоций.
Sergei Yesenin is one of the most popular Russian poets in Poland. Interest in his poetry has been undiminished ever since the first translations of Inoniya (Otherland) and Tovarishch into Polish appeared in 1922. Although the literary heritage of Yesenin has been professionally researched by Polish scholars and has attracted a large following of Polish readers for a century, there are gaps in his poetry that need to be filled. The author of this article investigates the role of scents in the poems of Sergei Yesenin, taking into account their changes throughout the creative process, from his juvenile works to his final texts. This approach allows us to present not only the poet’s worldview and his deep connection to the Russian culture, but also to trace the reflection of his individual linguistic worldview in his works. The article also presents a relatively new perspective on the reception of Yesenin’s poetry in Poland, namely the peculiarities and difficulties of translating into Polish the olfactory images used by the poet to convey profound emotions.

Paper focuses on the role of translation in building and widening of sociological horizon. It points out the significance of quantity, quality, up-to-dateness, availability, and indispensability of translations. It also analyses functions of didactic texts' (textbooks and readers) translations defining, together with academic publications, the borders of sociological mainstream canons. The paper shows how translations have broadened sociological mainstream by gender perspective, and mentions crucial translations from this field. The analysis includes examples of texts not present in the canon - still not translated into Polish or translated too late, and those translated early enough to enter the canon.

The aim of this article is to present the results of an analysis of the terminology of the Polish Criminal Code and its equivalents taken from three translations of the code into German. Scientific corpus includes Polish Criminal Code and the following three translations: DE-IURE-PL (2019), C.H. Beck (2012) and Max-Planck-Institut (1998). The method used is comparative legal analysis. The results of the analysis may find application in academic teaching and be used in the development of courses in legal translation.

Two audiovisual translations of the American hit medical drama, House M.D., German dubbing and Polish voiceover, and the analysis of translation strategies of the pronominal form of address you are the point of departure for choosing the right strategy for translation of the German book written by Michael Reufsteck and Jochen Stöckle Diekleine House-Apotheke. Ein Beipackzettel zur Kultserie which is the first German guide to the hit medical drama, providing unique insight into making of each episode of the first three series. The comparison of the two translation strategies - the German and the Polish one - shows that translation of the pronoun you determined the reception of the main protagonist. The reduced pronominal paradigm in English which does not distinguish between a formal and an informal address pronoun has created two different protagonists.

The present paper deals with the phenomenon of politically and culturally motivated ideologization that occurred in east and west German translations of Polish literature during the post-war period until 1990. It could be proven on various examples the enormous influence exerted by the political and ideological environment on both translators and the process of translation. Taking into account external intertextual relationships the author shows the way politically and ideologically marked German translations differing from Polish originals are reflected in the internal structure of the target language texts and affect their social functionality.

The article analyses Franco Fortini’s two poems written in 1944 during his exile in Switzerland: Warsaw 1939 and Warsaw 1944 (the latter’s former title was Warsaw 1943). The poet defined them Imaginary Translations, because he conceived them as translated from an inexistent original, written in occupied Poland. In this way, the Italian poet experimented for the first time with imaginary translations. Following Macpherson and Leopardi’s tradition of “Literary Hoaxes”, he sought new forms and “new words” for Poetry on WW II. The article compares the Fortini’s“Polish” poems with later comments on Imaginary translations (they are akin to “Imitation or Parody”, are created “taking delight in prank and experiment” and derive from a certain dominant conception of a foreign literature), paying particular attention to their strong intertextuality and their allusions to the practice of translating poetry in Italy.
Podczas politycznego wygnania w Szwajcarii, włoski poeta Franco Fortini opublikował anonimowo dwa wiersze (Warszawa 1943, Warszawa 1944), podając je za tłumaczenia tekstów napisanych w okupowanej Polsce. W ten sposób poeta po raz pierwszy eksperymentował na wyimaginowanych przekładach z nieistniejących oryginałów. Odwoływanie się do tradycji „literackich oszustw”, praktykowanej wcześniej przez Macphersona i Leopardiego, pomagało mu w poszukiwaniu form i „słów” dla nowej wojennej poezji. Artykuł zestawia „polskie” wiersze Fortiniego z jego późniejszymi wystąpieniami teoretycznymi, w których poeta analizuje relację wyimaginowanych przekładów do „imitacji lub parodii” w kontekście dominującego w środowisku literackim postrzegania danej literatury. Zwraca również szczególną uwagę na silną intertekstualność obu wierszy oraz na ukrytą w nich krytykę włoskiej praktyki translatorskiej.
