Opis:: Part one of this paper is a brief description of the contemporary changes in the teaching of foreign languages related to the CEFR and CEFR/CV publication and the birth of the action-oriented approach and infl uence of the European language policy on teaching Polish to foreigners in the 21st c. Part two discusses the genesis and concept of a textbook promoting the action-oriented approach, i.e. Dydaktyka i metodyka nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego i drugiego (Didactics and methodology of teaching Polish as a foreign and second language) (Warszawa 2020) by P. Gębal and W. Miodunka. This part synthetically describes the main topics covered in the book, such as: the place of didactics and methodology of teaching Polish as a foreign and second language within Polish glottodidactics, traditions and contemporary problems of such teaching, Polish language didactics across the world, its promotion and language policy, teaching of Polish as a second language and the latest directions in foreign language didactics, methodology of developing linguistic competences and language activities, teaching of Polish culture, the use of new technologies in teaching Polish, planning of the course and classes, and language assessment. Part three of the paper presents the comments inspired by the reading of P. Gębal and W. Miodunka’s publication.

Opis:: W artykule podjęto temat nauczania historii cudzoziemców uczących się języka polskiego jako obcego. Niewielka liczba publikacji z zakresu glottodydaktyki polonistycznej traktujących o sposoby nauczania historii cudzoziemców sprawia, że brakuje praktycznych propozycji podejmowania tego tematu na lektoratach. Autorzy przedstawili możliwe sposoby nauczania historii Polski na lekcjach języka polskiego jako obcego oraz wykorzystywania tekstów kultury w celu pogłębienia wiedzy historycznej cudzoziemców. Propozycje dydaktyczne dotyczą rezygnacji z omawiania wybranych wydarzeń historycznych w porządku chronologicznym na rzecz pokazywania powiązań między przeszłością i teraźniejszością. Przedstawiono sposób prezentowania wydarzeń w formie powracających zachowań zbiorowych w sytuacjach porównywalnych historycznie. Opisano także możliwości wykorzystywania tekstów kultury w celu poszerzania wiedzy o historii cudzoziemców. Poza tradycyjną analizą tekstów mówiących o wydarzeniach historycznych eksplicytnie można m.in. mówić o genezie tekstów w oparciu o procesy historyczne, które wpłynęły na ich formę. Podkreślono, że poruszanie tematów kontrowersyjnych stanowi szansę dla uczących się do samodzielnego pogłębiania wiedzy historycznej i wzmacniania postawy półautonomii w zakresie nauki kultury polskiej. Rozważania sytuują się w obszarze badań nad nauczaniem języka polskiego jako obcego oraz kultury polskiej jako obcej dorosłych cudzoziemców uczących się polszczyzny przede wszystkim w systemie akademickim.
This article addresses the issue of teaching history to foreigners learning Polish as a foreign language. The small number of publications in the field of Polish language glottodidactics discussing ways of teaching history to foreigners results in a lack of practical proposals for taking up this issue in foreign language classes. The authors present the possible methods of teaching Poland’s history in classes of Polish as a foreign language and of using cultural texts to deepen foreigners’ historical knowledge. The didactic proposals involve abandoning the discussion of selected historical events in chronological order in favour of showing the links between the past and the present. The manner of presenting events in the form of recurring collective behaviours in historically comparable situations is demonstrated. The possibilities of using cultural texts to enhance the knowledge of foreigners’ history are also described. In addition to the traditional analysis of texts telling about historical events explicitly, one can, among other things, talk about the genesis of the texts based on the historical processes that influenced their form. It is emphasised that addressing controversial topics provides an opportunity for learners to deepen their historical knowledge on their own and to strengthen a semi-autonomous attitude towards studying the Polish culture. The discussion falls into the area of research on teaching Polish as a foreign language and Polish culture as a foreign culture to adult foreigners learning Polish primarily in the academic system.

Opis:: The outline of the history of creation of Polish (Polonocentric) communities in the USA evidences the process of the demographic and social transformation of the diaspora from Polish populations of settlers to Polish communities abroad to Polonocentric circles, which has a substantive influence on education of Polish communities abroad in the areas of command of Polish and knowledge of Poland. The results of the research conducted in the period 2015–2022 in the educational system for Polish communities on the East Coast of the USA permit the conclusions on the necessity to modify the teaching methods, techniques, and materials used in teaching Polish to children and youth of Polish descent.

Opis:: Part three of the paper concerning the Polish language around the world in the period 1918–2018 is dedicated to discussing academic studies analysing the process of preserving and passing on the Polish language in the countries where Polish communities have settled, dissertations on Polish-foreign bilingualism in Sweden, Brazil, Austria, Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, UK, Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine, and fi nally, studies describing teaching Polish as a foreign language, as a heritage language, and as a second language. Part one of the paper concerning the Polish language around the world in the period 1918–2018 ended with the statement that the ambitious action plans of the pre-war Polish authorities lacked the base in the form of the knowledge of the transformations of the Polish communities all over the world and aid for teaching Polish as a foreign language. Part three presents the important sociolinguistic output referring to the Polish language across the world, Polish-foreign bilingualism, and multilingualism, and fi nally, to teaching Polish as a foreign, second, and heritage language, which contributes to the fl ourishing Polish glottodidactics. There are currently no ambitious actions on the part of the state authorities addressing the evolving Polish glottodidactics, which relies on ad-hoc undertakings of university glottodidactics centres.

Opis:: The entire period 1944-2018 was divided chronologically into two parts: the period 1944-1989, which was the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), when Poland was part of the Socialist Bloc, led by the USSR, and the period 1989-2018, when the Polish authorities and society built a free and independent Republic of Poland in unison. In the former period, special attention is given to the period 1978-1990, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s election as Pope John Paul II first and the establishment and activity of the Solidarity movement next made Poland a country well-known and admired all over the world, which largely influenced the transformation of the awareness of the Polish community in many countries. All this constitutes a background for the presentation of the history of education of the Polish community abroad, foundation of schools of the Polish language and culture at numerous Polish institutions of higher education, with the University of Warsaw in the lead and fi nally, the process of developing Polish Studies abroad as well as the process of integrating Polish and foreign specialists in Polish studies in the period 1997-2018.

Opis:: On the occasion of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1918, several papers have been written to depict the development and transformations of the Polish language over the period 1918–2018. However, none of the studies covered popularising Polish by emigrant communities in various countries around the world, preserving it and passing it down to new generations in a bilingual environment, and its teaching not only in ethnic schools but also in higher education institutions. This paper addresses the abovementioned issues by presenting relations between the Polish state and emigration communities in the period 1918–1939 first. A characteristic typical of this period was the fact that governmental authorities treated emigrants and their descendants as Poles around the world who may pursue the objectives of the Polish foreign policy. With this in mind, the World Union of Poles (Światpol) was established in 1934, which was opposed by representatives of the Polish American community. A further part of the paper presents the organisation of summer school of the Polish language and culture at the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków beginning from 1931, teaching of the Polish language in Polish schools abroad and aid provided to them by Poland, and finally, courses of Polish and programmes in Polish Studies offered at foreign universities.

Opis:: The first university programme in Polish studies in China was launched already in the 1950s. The foundations laid by a few generations of specialists in Polish studies from Beijing Foreign Studies University permit the development of successive programmes in Polish studies in other Chinese academic centres. They use the support of the PRC government, which has been implementing a dynamic foreign policy addressed to the Central and Eastern European countries for a few years now. One of the new centres offering innovative programmes in Polish studies, which are combined with the economic and international path, is the Sichuan University in Chengdu, supported by the University of Warsaw. This paper describes the formation of the Polish+ programme in Chengdu and presents the details related to the curriculum of the studies, which inspires other Chinese higher education institutions to introduce similar specialties in cooperation with the greatest Polish higher education institutions.

Opis:: This paper discusses the issue of irrelevance of the aspect of the Polish verb. In specifi c contexts, the grammatical category of aspect, being obligatory in the Polish language, is in fact redundant. The identifi cation of such contexts (and hence review of the most important current observations and convictions in this respect), the attempt at ordering and describing them enabled systematic material research based on a (Polish–German and German–Polish) translation. The fi ndings presented in the paper might be a good starting point for a refl ection on the reasonability of including the described issue in curricula of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Due to its reach and frequency, the phenomenon of alternation of aspectual partners should be more frequently discussed in the literature dedicated to aspect and Polish glottodidactics.

Opis:: The number of students with the experience of migration has been growing year by year in Polish schools. They need to learn Polish relatively fast for educational purposes. This paper presents, based on a pilot glottodidactic experiment, the observations of how foreign children could be helped to learn Polish using simple math exercises. The demonstrated outline of the didactic innovation is aimed at showing how the repeatability of language sequences in the narration of the exercises affects the development of students’ grammatical and lexical competence.
