Opis:
Nitrogen has greater influence on growth and yield of crop plants than any other essential plant nutrient. Nitrogen is usually the element that is of primary importance in the determination of crop yields and quality. Potato is a sensitive crop to application management of nitrogen and amounts less or more than its requirements. The main objective of this review was to assess the forms, functions and effects in plant growth (in case of potato). Original source of nitrogen is atmosphere it is also found in soil pore spaces as dinitrogen gas and both organic and inorganic forms in the soil. Nitrogen commonly loses through leaching, volatilization, crop removal, denitrification, soil erosion and runoff. Biological fixation and commercial production are main sources of nitrogen and shortage of nitrogen shows different symptoms on different morphological parts and low nutrient content on tissues and grains (tubers) of crops. Generally nitrogen is one of essential nutrient for complete life cycle of plants. It is the first most important nutrient required relatively in large amounts by plants while soils generally contain relatively small amounts of this element.

The effect of plant population on the growth and yield Mucuna flagellipes (Vogel ex Hook) was conducted for two cropping seasons (2013 and 2014) in the Teaching and Research farm, Department of Agronomy, Cross River University of Technology Obubra, Cross River State. The experimentwas laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Treatments comprised four plant populations of 33,333, 16,666, 10,000 and 8,333 plants/ha and there were three replications. Data collected were statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) procedure for a randomized complete block design. Close spacing with high plant population significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the number of leaves, branches and dry matter of plant fractions per plant. The longest vine of 594.1 and 651.3cm and leaf area index of 7.462 and 7.609 were produced in plant population of 33,333 plants/ha at 24 WAP in 2013 and 2014 cropping seasons respectively. Pod and seed yield per plant were higher in plots with the least plant population of 8,333 plants/ha as compared with other higher plant population of 33,333 and 16,666 plants/ha. The highest Mucuna flagellipes seed yield of 2.85 and 2.91 tons/ha were produced from plots with 33,333 plants/ha in 2013 and 2014 cropping seasons.

Opis:
Crown ratio is a term used to describe the ratio of the crown length to the total tree height. The crown length emphasizes the distance between the crown apex and the crown point while the distance between the tree apex and the ground level defines the total tree height. The tree crown ratio are predicted by the use of empirical models which assist in the provision of accurate estimates for both individual, stand growth as well as yield that are veritable tools for evaluating numerous management and utilization decision. However, no single type of model can provide sufficient information effectively for all levels of decision making, thus the essence of modeling tree crown ratio for Hevea brasiliensis plantation in Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN). Tree growth variables are such as diameter at the base (DB), diameter at the breast height (DBH), crown diameter (CD), crown length (CL), total tree height (THT) were measured from a six year old plantation of 402 trees, while tree attributes such as crown projection area (CPA), basal area (BA), tree slenderness coefficient (TSC), crown ratio (CR) were estimated using their empirical formula. The data collected from the plantation was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation and regression analyses with non-linear models used in fitting the data into CR equations and other growth attributed with individual data fitted to evaluate the robustness of the models using the fit indices. The result of the study reveals that there were significant variations in the growth attributes within the plantation in the study area. The result of the correlation analysis between CR and other growth characteristics revealed significant associations. The best adjudged CR model was the logistics model which is represented as CR=a_0/(1-e^(^(1-a_(1 ) CL+a_2 THT)) ) ; (R2 = 0.96 and SSE = 0.1177). The study has shown that crown ratio models developed has significant relationship with CL and THT and this can be successfully used for predictive studies on crown attributes for Hevea brasiliensis plantations in Nigeria.

Nowadays, the use of natural polysaccharides in the field of agriculture has increased in order to achieve sufficient yields and quality. Minimal research on effect of biopolymers on growth ornamental plants has been published. Verbena bonariensis L. is a valuable perennial species, recommended for cultivation in gardens and green areas, as well as cut and pot plant. The main objective of the investigation was to analyzed the effects of three polysaccharides on the growth and flowering of V. bonariensis. The plants were sprayed with aqueous solution of chitosan, gellan gum or kappa-carrageenan at a concentration of 0.2%, five times. Control plants were treated with water. The results indicated that polysaccharides significantly enhanced the plant height, number of inflorescences and number of leaves of V. bonariensis plants. Application of chitosan and gellan gum significantly increased the stomatal conductance by 13.8 and 16.3 % and enhanced the number of shoots per plant by 29.4 and 37.5 % compared with that control, respectively. Among the three polysaccharides, gellan gum proved best and gave significantly maximum fresh weight of aboveground part and fresh weight of root by 34.3 and 114 % over the control one.

The paper attempts to evaluate the relationship between empirical analysis of multinational corporations and economic growth in Nigeria using data spanning (1991-2014). Secondary data were used and were collected from the CBN statistical bulletin and national bureau of statistics. Hypotheses were formulated and tested using time series econometrics and the study reveals that the variables do not have unit roots. There is also long-run equilibrium relationship between economic growth and multinational corporations and the result confirms that about 73% short-run adjustment speed from long-run disequilibrium. There is a causal relationship between multinational corporations and economic growth. The coefficient of determination indicates that about 52% of the variations in economic growth is explained by changes in multinational corporations’ variables. The study therefore recommends that multinational corporations should make life meaningful to the host country by providing infrastructural facilities. Government should ensure that multinational corporations plough back part of their profits to the development of the host communities in other to established good working relationship. Federal environmental protection agencies should also ensure effective monitoring of multinational corporations to avoid the violation of the lay down rules and regulations guiding their operations.

Opis:
Effects of heavy metals on plants result in growth inhibition, structure damage, a decline of physiological and biochemical activities as well as of the function of plants. The effects and bioavailability of heavy metals depend on many factors, such as environmental conditions, pH, and species of element, organic substances of the media and fertilization, plant species. But, there are also studies on plant resistance mechanisms to protect plants against the toxic effects of heavy metals. The microorganisms act in synergism with the plants for effective phytoremediation. This synergistic relationship promotes the exchange of water and nutrients established between plant roots and specialized soil microorganisms thus, enhancing the plant growth. The application of microorganisms in phytoremediation helps to improve plant growth and survival rate. The microbial activity in the contaminated site acts as an indicator for the plant growth and bioremediation. So an attempt were made on the toxic effects of chromium in paddy plants growth and yield and thereby mitigating its toxicity by using microbial inoculants especially Azospirillum.

There exists an inadequate research on the propagation and nutrient needs of most tropical tree species. Hence, this work involves the developmental impact of soil amendments on the early growth of Streculia setigera Del. in the nursery. Different soil amendments; poultry waste (F1), goat manure (F2), cow manure (F3) and the control, normal soil (F4) were applied to several viable seeds of Streculia setigera in the nursery. The seeds were subjected to the same routine nursery practices. The experiment was laid in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and lasted for ninety (90) days. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed that the entire growth response of Streculia setigera seedlings were only sparely affected by the soil amendments (P<0.05). F3 was found to be the most preferred soil amendment for this species, followed by F2 and F4 consecutively. The result obtained from F1 was very poor and thus it is not ideal for this species.
