Opis:
Synthetic dyes are widely used in the rubber, textiles, plastics, paper and cosmetics industries to color their products. The effectiveness of adsorption for dye removal from wastewater has made it an ideal alternative to other expensive treatment methods. This study investigates the physicochemical properties of animal-bone- (AB) and corncob- (CC) derived activated carbon on the removal of methylene blue dye. The effects of condition variables such as initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and contact time were studied. The results show that animal-bone-derived activated carbon has better potential for dye removal than does the corn cob-derived equivalent. AB revealed a higher adsorption capacity of intensity (2.40) and is of higher surface area - 500 m2g–1, while CC has adsorptive capacity of 1.25, intensity of 2.80 and surface area of 420 m2/g–1. What is more, the removal efficiency increases as adsorbent dose increases. This makes it an interesting option for dye removal from aqueous solutions of dye.

Opis:
The phosphorus adsorption capacity of soil in the presence and absence of HA and FYM was determined by adding 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 120, 240 and 360 mg L-1 (initially applied P, IPA) to 5 g soils with and without HA (10 mg kg-1) and FYM (20 g kg-1). The soils along with respective phosphorus solution were taken in duplicates, were shaken on horizontal shaker for 30 hr continuously. The suspension were then filtered through whattman-42 and analyzed for P which represented the equilibrium P concentration (EPC). These soils were then applied another 45 mL distilled water and shaken for 24 hr for desorption study. The study revealed that the soils treated with P+FYM and P+HA significantly decreased the adsorption of Phosphorous at each level of IPA as compared with soil treated with P alone. Furthermore in case of alone P the higher Xad and Kd values attributed towards more P adsorption, at any levels of IPA than the soil which received HA and FYM treatments. Soils treated with P+FYM and P+HA indicated higher desorption of P as well at any IPA than the soil treated with P alone, confirmed that FYM and HA not only reduced P adsorption but also played a vital role in the release of P from soil surfaces into soil solution. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models were used in the study, however Freundlich model was found best fit in the present study. Such type of studies should be encouraged at field levels.

levofloxacin and Adsorption
Opis:
The corrosion inhibition behaviour of levofloxacin was investigated on carbon steel by means of a 2 M HCl solution, using potentiodynamic polarization measurement and Quantum chemical studies. The inhibitive effect of the studied compound was found to increase with increasing concentration and to increase with increasing temperature. The study reveals that levofloxacin is a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of levofloxacin on carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and involves physical adsorption mechanisms. Quantum chemical studies corroborate experimental results.

The inhibition of X80 carbon steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution by dexketoprofen (DKP) was studied using weight loss (WL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results indicated that DKP acts by way of adsorption as an effective protective inhibitor in the aggressive acid medium. The inhibition efficiency of DKP increased with concentration but was lower at higher temperature. The results of potentiodynamic polarization showed that DKP molecule behaved as a mixed type inhibitor by reducing both the anodic and the cathodic electrochemical reactions. Dexketoprofen was adsorbed on the X80 steel surface in accordance with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. SEM analyses supported formation of protective film on the X80 steel in the presence of DKP.

Opis:
The use of waste to reduce pollution has been advocated by many researchers. In this study five samples of physically prepared fluted pumpkin seed shell activated carbons (PFACs) prepared elsewhere were successfully used in reducing Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of vegetable oil industry effluents (VOIE). BOD readings of effluent were measured using the Lovibon BOD IR Sensomat while COD was determined by use of PCcheckit COD Vario (Lovibond) consisting of PCcheckit COD Vario photometer and COD reactor ET 108 model. Batch adsorption had better performance (BOD and COD removal of 52 % to 83 %) over column adsorption (BOD5 and COD removal of 35 % to 86 %). Batch adsorption gave better BOD and COD reduction. Though BOD and COD removal varied widely with carbon dose, pH, temperature and contact time the effects of theses factors investigated in the reduction of BOD and COD were complex and difficult to streamlined.

The investigation of kinetics and thermodynamics of the corrosion of mild steel in a 2 M HCl solution using methanolic extract of Erigeron floribundus was carried out by means of gravimetric techniques. The results obtained indicate that the extract retarded corrosion. The inhibition efficiency was seen to increase with increase in concentration of the inhibitor, as well as with increase in temperature. The values of activation energy (Ea) obtained indicate a chemisorptions mechanism, whereas the value of Gibb free energy (ΔGoads) indicates a spontaneous adsorption of the extract components on the metal surface. Kinetic modelling of the experimental data obeys first order reaction. The adsorption of methanolic extract of Erigeron floribundus onto the mild steel surface followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Therefore, the extract functions as good corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid.

Opis:
Worldwide, there have been longstanding issues of heavy metal pollution of both ground and surface waters from industrial effluents. In this research, Daniella oliveri leaves were investigated as a precursor for the development of low-cost adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from aqueous media. The adsorbents (biosorbent and ash) were characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Branueur-Emmet-Teller analysis (BET). The biosorbent (DO-B) and ash (DO-A) from Daniella oliveri leaves had a specific surface area of 574.5 m2/g and 723.0 m2/g respectively. Both adsorbents were mesoporous with pore diameter >2 nm. The ash was a better adsorbent for Pb(II) than the biosorbent powder, however, both adsorbents have over 99% removal of Pb(II) at optimal conditions. Best-fit isotherm for DO-B was Freundlich isotherm while no best fit for DO-A was observed. The adsorption for both adsorbents was best fit pseudo-second order kinetic model. Adsorbents from Daniella oliveri leaves could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous media and can play an important role in mitigating the potential impact of the release of industrial effluent into the environment.

Ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus (EEPA) was tested as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 2 M HCl solution using gravimetric and gasometric methods at 303, 313, 323 K and 333 K. The results revealed that the corrosion rate increases with temperature and time. Addition of the concentration of ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus to the corroding environment lowered the corrosion rate of mild steel and increased inhibition efficiency (IE %) of ethanollic extract. Inhibition efficiency was found to decreased with temperature. Fitting of the experimental data to the Arrhenius and Transition state equations revealed that the Organic constituents of the extract were physically adsorbed on the corroding surface of the steel and adsorption of ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus (EEPA) on mild steel surface was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and Freundlich adsorption isotherm and sign of the Gibb’s fee energy of the adsorption obtained suggested that inhibitor molecules have been spontaneously adsorbed onto the mild steel surface. Positive values obtained for enthalpy change indicated that the adsorption of inhibitor is endothermic.

The ability of NaOH-activated carbon derived from cassava peels waste to remove MY from aqueous solution was carried out in a fixed-bed column adsorber. The parameters studied included initial solution concentration, Co, carbon bed height and volume flow rate. The temperature of operation and initial solution pH were 29 °C and 5.32, respectively. The optimum adsorption capacity, qe 4.12 mg/g was obtained at Co 10mg/L, bed height 10cm and flow rate, 13.3ml/min. Experimental data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm, as well as the Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and Clark kinetic models. All the models were good fits for experimental data based on correlation coefficient, R2 values. The ΔGads and Freundlich n (1.587) show that the biosorption was spontaneous, good and physical. Results show that NaOH-activated carbon from cassava peels has low capacity to remove MY from aqueous solutions.

The adsorption capacity of these parts followed the order of husk > stalk > cob > seed chaff, with values of 9.65 mg/g, 4.83 mg/g, 3.70 mg/g and 2.48 mg/g, respectively. Maximum adsorption capacity of each part was reached in 45 min. Herein, the husk giving the best removal efficiency of 80.80%. Characterization of the maize husk using PIXE showed that potassium is the main cation on this biomass, with concentration 5.602 g/kg. FTIR scans of the husk before and after adsorption of Cu2+ ions gave shifts in adsorption bands on -OH carrying molecules, indicating that complexation is a mechanism in the metal ion removal process. The multi porous structure of the husk, and uniform surface coverage by ions observed from SEM images before and after adsorption, shed more light on the high adsorption efficiency shown by this natural waste material.

Adsorption behaviour of copper (II) oxide particles (CuO-Ps) for the removal of Alkali Blue (AB) was studied. Different adsorption variables such as contact time, initial concentration and pH for the adsorption process were investigated by batch adsorption studies. FTIR was carried out to determine the functional groups present at the surface of the particle with functional groups such as –OH, C=C, C-H, C≡C detected. The percentage removal and optimum contact time for the removal of AB was 84.8% at 10 min. The experimental isotherms data were analyzed using Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms and it was observed that AB fits closely to Langmuir with R2 value of 0.884. Kinetics studies shows that the adsorption process fits better to pseudo-second order with the experimental values of qe 4.242 been closer to the calculated values of the qe 4.108. Effect of pH shows that it adsorb better at the initial pH of 5.30. Lower value of mean square energy of 0.707 kJ/mol indicates that the adsorption process is physical. The results indicated that copper (II) oxide particle can be used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of AB from aqueous solutions.

Carbon microsphere with high porosity and surface area were synthesized via the sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in a slightly basic medium and followed by drying and pyrolysis. The effects of different parameters during synthesis were investigated. The porous properties of carbon microsphere were evaluated by nitrogen adsorption method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By changing both the catalyst species and resorcinol to catalyst ratio (R/C), it was possible to prepare ultramicroporous carbon sphere with pore size about 1.8 nm. The samples evolve from micro-mesoporous solid (RF-Na2CO3: combination of types I and IV isotherms) with 24.2% micropore to an exclusively microporous material (RF-NH4HCO3: type I isotherm) with 98.7% micropore. The results show that it is possible to tailor the morphology of these materials by varying the initial pH of the precursor’s solution in a narrow range and that the micropore surface area and micropore volume are independent from the initial pH, while the BET surface area vary from 582 m2/g (pH = 3.2) to 680 m2/g (pH = 6). However, as the pH increases over pH = 6 the surface area is decreases. These materials can be used as packing for separation columns or as catalysts supports.
