Opis:
Inter-individual variation in immune response to widely used prophylactic vaccines against infectious diseases is strongly influenced by sex, MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex), age and current hormones status of vaccinated individuals. Numerous findings showed that microorganisms residing at different sites of human or animal body (natural microbiota), especially in the gastrointestinal tract, appear to contribute to nearly every element of the host’s physiology. Recently, the microbiota is also supposed to be an underappreciated yet, but very important factor responsible for diverse vaccine efficacy observed in humans from developing vs. developed countries. In the article, selected aspects of the microbiota – host relation are presented: importance of the gut microbiota in the development of both the intestinal mucosal and systemic immune responses, bacteria of a predominant role for the immunity (e.g., SFB, Segmented Filamentous Bacteria), and several clinical observations on the varied immunogenicity of the same vaccines in different human populations. In the light of our current knowledge, manipulation of the microbiota by probiotics and/or prebiotics is becoming a realistic therapeutic and prophylactic strategy for many infectious, inflammatory and even neoplastic diseases within the gut but it may be also used for improving vaccine efficacy.

Opis:
The human body is composed of 1014 cells, of which only 10% of them belong to the human host itself: the remaining 90% are microorganisms. Commensal microorganisms are necessary for the proper functioning of the human body and covers an area that could potentially become sites of adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms, it thus represents a form of competition for potential pathogens. The coexistence of fungi and bacteria in cases of systemic infections is a significant diagnostic and therapeutic problem, and the human immune system reacts differently, depending on the pathogen. Numerous publications exist concerning the relationship between microorganisms belonging to different ecological groups, the majority of which concern the interaction between macro-organisms and potential pathogens, or the synergistic relationship between parasitic species. However, there is still too little information concerning the role of natural microbiota in maintaining homeostasis and the relationships between particular species inhabiting the human organism.

Opis:
Objective. To investigate a relationship between the etiological factor of external otitis and occurrence of particular signs/symptoms. Design. A special questionnaire was designed and completed by all patients covering personal details, medical history, results of otolaryngological examination and bacteriological and mycological investigations. Subjects. 249 patients of the Outpatient Department of Laryngology at the Regional Hospital in Bełchatów with symptoms of external otitis. For analysis of relationships between particular signs/symptoms and species/genera of microorganisms, statistical tests were used: χ2 test, χ2 test with Yate’s modification, C−Pearson index, and Fisher exact test for very small samples. Results. There is a statistical dependence between discharge, hearing loss, swelling of skin, scant, dried discharge with fetid odour and bacteria isolated from the external ear canal. Similar dependence exists between pain, hearing loss, no smelly discharge or wet, black plug of fetid odour and fungi. Also there is a statistical dependence between pruritus, red skin and grey, fetid discharge and mixed flora. Conclusions. Some of symptoms and signs are connected with definite etiological factors which is important not only for correct diagnosis but also for institution of appropriate and effective treatment. On the basis of some characteristic symptoms and signs it is possible to make a tentative diagnosis as to the etiological pathogen responsible for external otitis.

Opis:
In recent years several vector-borne, parasitic or zoonotic diseases have (re)-emerged and spread in Europe with major health, ecological, socio-economical and political consequences. The problem of increasing risk of vector-borne diseases in Europe is widely discussed at periodic international conferences like International Jena Symposium on Tick-borne Diseases or the conference organized by European branch of Society for Vector Ecology ESOVE. The problem takes also effect in establishment of international projects (e.g. EDEN, VBORNET). Mosquitoes and ticks are the most remarkable disease vectors transmitting microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, parasitic protozoans) or metazoan parasites (nematodes). In Europe mosquitoes have a strong effect on human life quality, tourism and economic development because of being a nuisance. However, the changing climatic conditions make mosquito-borne diseases which have already been eradicated, or newly appearing diseases, a threat to human health. Among tick-borne diseases in Europe, the most common is Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis, but the list of pathogens identified in ticks keeps increasing and it is expected to increase the number of cases of tick-borne infections. Assessment of vector-borne risk is enhanced by very helpful Geographic Information System – a notable technique for comprehensive analysis of both abiotic and biotic data.
