Opis:
A study was conducted on habitat preferences of the common tick Ixodes ricinus. Material and methods. Eleven habitats were distinguished within the administrative borders of the city of Lublin as well as in the Gułowskie Forests and the Kozłowieckie Forests (Lublin voivodeship). They included meadows and pastures, thickets, poletimber woods, dry pine forests, mesic pine forests, mixed forests, mixed woods, deciduous woods, city parks, suburban wooded areas, and wasteland within the administrative borders of the city. In all of these habitats, a total of 61 one−hour flaggings were carried out. The mean number of the sampled specimens was regarded as the relative abundance of ticks in a given habitat. Results. In the natural environments, the highest tick density was observed in mesic pine forests, mixed forests, and thickets. A relatively low abundance was found in deciduous woods, and the lowest abundance – in poletimber woods and dry pine forests (Table 1). It was demonstrated that the abundance of the parasites is determined by the capacity to maintain appropriate humidity of the environment throughout the period of their occurrence, and not by the type of vegetation. This may have been the reason behind similar abundance of ticks in meadows and deciduous woods (Tables 1 and 2). In Lublin, rare ticks were collected only on the outskirts of the urban zone and – exceptionally – in the wasteland. In typically urban parks, no parasites were found.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to detect piroplasms, which are pathogens of veterinary and zoonotic importance in ticks, that were collected from ponies and field vegetation and to determine the role of Shetland ponies as potential reservoir hosts for piroplasms. A total of 1737 feeding and 371 questing Ixodes ricinus collected from horses or vegetation were tested for the presence of Babesia and Theileria DNA. Piroplasm 18S rRNA gene amplification was conducted, and the obtained amplicons were sequenced. Babesia DNA was detected in only three ticks (one tick collected from a pony and two collected from vegetation), and all of the obtained sequences had 100% similarity to B. divergens. Theileria DNA was not present in the examined ticks. Thus, the above results indicate that ponies are probably not essential hosts for the detected species of piroplasms. Piroplasm species typical for horses (Babesia caballi and Theileria equi) were not detected because I. ricinus is not their vector. The low infection rate of I. ricinus with B.divergens shows that the disease risk for the local horse population and people associated with pony horses is low, but it demonstrates their possible role as a source of human infection in northern Poland.

Opis:
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. I.), the etiological agent of Lyme diesease, is transmitted by the bite of Ixodes ricinus. During May and September 1999, field surveys on Lyme disease spirochetes were conducted in three locations of a region of north-west Poland, known as recreational districts visited by many people. The ticks Ixodes ricinus were collected in natural habitats by dragging a flanel cloth over the vegetation. Sex and developmental stage of each tick were determined. Based on a polymerase chain reaction test with primers that recognize a chromosomal gene of all strains, out of the total 1414 specimens collected, 126 (8.9%) were found to be infected. the species B. burgdorferi s. 1. comprises at least three pathogenic genomospecies, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s. s.), Borrelia garinii, and Borerelia afzelii, witch could be distinguished in nested-PCR tests with species-specific primers. B. burgdorferi s. s. was most prevalent (96% of infected ticks), followed by B. garinii (1.3%), and B. afzelii. was not found. Of the infected ticks, over the 99% were infected with a single species; one specimens was infected with two species. For 4 ticks, the infecting species could not be identied. The difference in rates of prevalence was observed among the tree locations (17%-5.3%-3.2%).

Material and methods. The study of the occurence and relative numbers of the common tick Ixodes ricinus in environments of various degree and character of anthropogenic impact was conducted in 3 forest complexes situated in the Lubelskie voivodeship: the Gułowskie Forests (district of Łuków), the Kozłowieckie Forests (district of Lubartów) and the Dąbrowa Forest (within the municipal boundaries of Lublin). The adopted method was flagging in the period of peak activity of ticks in the springs of 2005−2006. 7 environments were distinguished, in which a total of 48 censuses were conducted. Relative density of ticks was assessed based on the number of specimens caught by one person in 60 minutes. Results. In total, 2081 specimens were caught; on average 43.4 in a single sample. For comparisons of the size of the population of the parasites in the distinguished environments, the so−called „risk factor” (Z) was formulated. It was calculated by assigning the value of 1.00 to the average number of ticks caught during one census. Ticks were found in all the investigated environments. Their highest average numbers (Z=1.91) were found in forest tracks, the lowest ones — along the shoreline of water reservoirs. A high density (Z=1.00) was recorded in an environment of homogenous vegetation structure, defined as the ”forest interior”.

Opis:
Background. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks within Nadbużański Landscape Park (central−eastern Mazovian province, Poland). Material and methods. A total of 685 of ticks (187 adults, 393 nymphs and 105 larvae) were collected in the surroundings of seven places: Korczew, Sterdyń, Ceranów, Miedza, Stoczek, Sadowne, Łochów. Results. The spirochetes DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 60 samples of DNA (8.8%) of the total number of tested ticks (taking into consideration minimal infection rate in pool by 5 nymphs or larvae). The infection rate in females, males, nymphs and larvae was 18.8%, 13.8%, 6.1% and 3.8%, respectively. The highest percentage of spirochete infection (14.1%) was detected in ticks occurring within the Łochów, while the lowest (2.7%) from Stoczek.

Evaluation of occurrence of spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks in selected areas of the Lublin Region by polimerase chain reaction method (PCR). During the period 2001-2002, 1098 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected at forest sampling sites and the degree of their infection with Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes was determined by means of polimerase chain reaction (PCR). The presence of Borrelia burgdorferi genetic material was noted in 69 cases (6.3%). lt was confirmed that the frequency of infection of adult forms of ticks (males and females) was nearly twice as high as nymphs. The highest degree of infection was observed in females – 9.5%. The degree of infection among males and nymphs was smaller - 5.9% and 4.4% respectively in individual provinces. The percentage of infected females ranged from 7.9% in the Zamość Province to 13.6% in the Włodawa Province. In males, the percentage of infected ticks remained within the range from 3.1% in the Lublin Province to 13.3% in the Lubartów Province.

Opis:
The present study deals with the ecology of Lyme borreliosis in Northern Poland. The complexity of environmental conditions are: (1) the presence of certain rodent hosts for the Borrelia, (2) the seasonal patterns of abundance and infection rate of /. ricinus in the population of rodents and on vegetation, (3) the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.1., B. garinii and B. afzelii. The longterm studies were carried out on a monthly basis from April to October (1998-2001) in woodlands at Urwitałt near Mikołajki on the Mazury Lakes. Two methods of spirochate detection were used: indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The dynamics of ticks infestation, differences in infestation rates between years, months, age and sex for two species of rodents (Clethrionomys glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis) were analysed using the software package Statgraphics version 7 and GLIM 4 (statistical system for generalized linear interactive modeling, Royal Statistical Society 1993). We were able to demonstrate that in selected habitat of Mazury Lakes the spirochaetal agent of Lyme borreliosis occurs quite frequently, both in rodents and in vector — /. ricinus. Comparing C. glareolus and A. flavicollis, each rodent species showed different, seasonal and sex dependent, host infection with Borrelia. Due to the courses of prevalence of infection, both for partially engorged ticks and questing ticks, the risk of human infection seems to be highest in spring. The infection rate of engorged larvae was much higher than in questing larvae. We conclude that both species of rodents, highly abounded in the Mazury Lakes district, may represent significant zoonotic reservoir for B. burgdorferii sl., B. garinii and B. afzelii.

In order to learn the heterogeneity of the DNA of B. burgdorferi s.l. and the prevalence of co-infections of B. burgdorferi s.l. genospecies in the populations of /. ricinus, collected in north-western Poland, the nested PCR method was applied, a fragment of the fla gene being used as a marker. Basing on the prevalence data of B. burgdorferi s.1. DNA in I. ricinus ticks in 8 sampling sites during 1998-2001, it may be stated that a risk of contracting Lyme disease exists in forested areas of north-western Poland, the highest in relation to B. burgdorferi s.s. (76.3% infected ticks), lower by B. garinii (2% infected ticks), and minimal threat being posed by B. afzelii (0.3%). I. ricinus ticks collected in north-western Poland pose a risk of contracting double infection by B. burgdorferi s.1. genospecies, i.e. B. burgdorferi s.s. with B. garinii, and B. burgdorferi s.s. with B. afzelii. The north-western part of Poland represents an endemic area for B. burgdorferi s.1.

Opis:
The genus Rickettsia is composed of obligatory intracellular gram−negative bacteria associated with arthropods: ticks, mites and insects. The genus was found to comprise the sub−groupings: the spotted fever group (SFG) and the typhus group (TG). Members of the SFG rickettsiae are usually associated with ixodid ticks which transfer them to vertebrates via arthropod secretions and between themselves transstadially and transovarially. Rickettsiosis is a complex pathogenic condition which takes on a number of various forms, depending on aetiological factors prevalent locally. Symptoms of rickettsiosis are similar to those occurring in many other tick−borne diseases. The necrotic skin lesion is a typical sign of spotted fever−group rickettsioses. The definition of SFG species has been recommended to use combined methods: rickettsiae detection and identification should be carried out based on serological tests and molecular techniques. Those recommended among the latter include PCR, PCR−RFLP, macrorestriction analysis by pulse−field gel electrophoresis and sequencing. The SFG rickettsiae are present in the Old Continent for example in Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark or Slovakia. Rickettsiae have been detected in patients and ticks from genus Ixodes and Dermacentor. The bacteria of SFG (Rickettsia helvetica) is present in ticks Ixodes ricinus from northern Poland creating potential danger for humans and animals.

Capreolus capreolus and Ixodes ricinus as a reservoir of Bartonella in north-western Poland. The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence Bartonella in Capreolus capreolus from north-western Poland forest. Supplementary, ticks infesting roe deer were also screened in order to ascertain their role as vectors and reservoirs of Bartonella. The samples of blood from 98 animals from north-western Poland were PCR-screened. Bartonella DNA was detected by using primers complementary to the intergenic spacer (ITS) between the 16S and 23S rRNA genes, which is used for identification of over a dozen species of this genus. Products of three different sizes were detected: 230 bp and 290 bp may represent two strains of B. capreoli, and 190 bp may be identify as B. bovis. All three amplicons were detected in blood, the 290 bp fragment from B. capreoli was present only in ticks, Ixodes ricinus. Generally, Bartonella infection in C. capreolus amounted to 21.4% of individuals, but was much higher during the autumn-winter seasons (62%), than in spring (4.3%). The results show that C. capreolus may be a reservoir for at least two species, i.e. B. capreoli and B. bovis, and probably do not cause persistent infection in roe deer. The high percentage of infested individuals during spring (84%) and infection detected in I. ricinus (5.2%) show that ticks are reservoir and vector of Bartonella.

The aim of present study was to evaluate acquisition risk of babesiosis in human population exposed to ticks /xodes ricinus by examination of Babesia microti DNA occurrence in ticks of all development stages. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to estimate the occurrence of DNA Babesia microti in Ixodes ricinus. The Bab1 and Bab4 primers were used to amplify fragment, 238bp in length, of 18S rRNA gene for small ribosomal subunit. Amplicons were electroforeticaly separated in agarose gels. Ticks were collected in year 1999 and 2000, twice in each year in spring-summer (May-July) and summer-autumn (August-October) seasons from Goleniów Forest and Pobierowo. These places have been classified as people attendance and tourist areas. The 716 /. ricinus ticks were collected in 1999 with 61.3% of nymphs, 17.8% larvae, 10.9% females and 9.9% males. Highest range of infection was observed in females — 28.8% studied, than males — 18.3%, nymphs — 7.7% and larvae — 3.1%. The total number of 416 /. ricinus was collected in year 2000 with 64% of nymphs, 13.4% males, 11.9% females and 10.7% larvae. The infection with Babesia microti occurred only in three nymphs, which was 0.7% of studied population.

Ecology of Ixodes ricinus collected on black-striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) was studied in the lowland ecosystems. During the study period (1986-1991), 1483 specimens of A. agrarius were examined in southern Slovakia and 1319 larvae and nymphs were collected from hosts. The seasonal pattern - bimodal (peak in spring and autumn) - was distinct for larvae. Both prevalence and abundance of tick infestation of A. agrarius by nymphs were low. Prevailing material of nymphs was collected from May (pooled data from all years) on mature hosts. There were significantly higher infestation in mature males than in females as well as significantly higher tick infestation of mature hosts than immature ones. Higher abundance of tick infestation of A. agrarius in fields is probably influenced by great spatial mobility of hosts and by import of ticks from landscape verdure.

Opis:
While the mapping of health data is not new for epidemiologists the incorporation of differentiated environmental factors, e.g., temperature, rainfall, humidity, elevation, vegetation type, host abundance and distribution, zoonotic reservoirs of infection can create a new opportunities for parasitologists. Suitable tools for spatial modeling of health problems and pathogen occurrence in space and time are provided by geographic information system (GIS). It is computer-based system which integrates, storages, edits, analyses, shares and displays information. This software system is based on connection between information - data and their location. GIS applications allow users to create interactive queries, analyze spatial information, edit data and maps. GIS is very useful to define the habitats of parasites, especially for the ticks which are strong depended on environmental conditions. Mapping not only enables to create maps based on field monitoring but also to create forecasting maps for prevention and control strategies on small and large scale. Up to now ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBD) having strong relationship with the ecosystem are highly amenable to predictive mapping. The aim of study is the characterization of procedural steps with regard to entering field environmental data to GIS database and their visualization on digital maps. The field date of tick monitoring conducted in April 2008 in the Wrocław area (the Osobowicki Forest) made possible to create digital database. ArcView as one of three separate software products of ArcGIS (a scalable framework for implementing GIS) was used to create an interactive maps. Visualization of the data which are stored in tables of attributes made possible to show legibly the distribution of I. ricinus on the analysed area. Mapping of I. ricinus occurrence on digital maps enable to indicate areas of the highest risk of biting and potential tick-borne diseases.

In the last decade new tick-transmitted zoonoses have emerged as threats to the public health in Europe. They are mostly due to infection by Borrelia burgdorferi s.I., Babesia divergens, B. microti and Ehrlichia sp. All these pathogens are transmitted by the rodent-feeding ticks of Ixodes persulcatus „complex". Also there is first serological information of coexistence of antibodies to B. burgdorferi, B. microti and Ehrlichia sp. in human exposured to these multiple tick-transmitted pathogens. Actually in Poland, the identification of the host species that act as zoonotical reservoir for these pathogens on which the competent vector becomes infected, is crucial to understand the dynamics of enzootie cycle of these pathogens. It is also important to assess the risk factor of infection in different habitats, especially in environmental condition where changing in farming system has left great land area under grassland or pasture, e.g. in Mazury Lakes District Under such circumstances, susceptible rodent species, at least for two of these pathogens: B. micrnti and B. burgdorferi s.l., increasingly became competent reservoirs. This aspect is currently receiving considerable attention in Europe.

Opis:
Domestic dogs in Poland are attacked by five species of ticks. The present study shows results of research on species of ticks, their intensity and prevalence of infection in the domestic dogs in the district of Rymanów (Subcarpathian province, Poland). Local research was conducted from 25 August 2005 to 27 October 2006 on 82 randomly selected dogs in the veterinarian centre in Rymanów. Collected ticks were put into tubes with 70% ethyl alcohol. Collected and full up ticks were examined straight after being taken out of the preserving liquid. Stereoscopic microscope for species identification was used. The study revealed that domestic dogs in the Rymanów district are hosts for two species of ticks from the Ixodidae family: Ixodes (Ixodes) ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ixodes (Pholeoixodes) hexagonus Leach, 1815. Only one dog was infected with both tick species simultaneously. The dogs were attacked mainly by females. Ticks usually attached to such places as the neck, ear conches or groin. In general, the prevalence of ticks infestation on domestic dogs was 48.78 %; I. ricinus prevalence was 47.56 %, whereas I. hexagonus – 2.43 %. On the basis of obtained results it can be claimed that I. ricinus is more prevalent in the Rymanów district than I. hexagonus, therefore the domestic dogs are more frequently attacked by this species of ticks.

The present study constitutes a survey on the prevalence of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent, Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) phagocytophila, infecting ticks, Ixodes ricinus. I. ricinus were collected in the spring and autumn of the years 2000-2002 in western Pomerania (Poland), on vegetation using cloth drags. In all, 3340 individuals of J. ricinus were collected from the sampling sites. This total comprised of 511 females, 525 males, and 1998 nymphs. The prevalence of this pathogen in ticks was assessed using the PCR technique (a fragment of 16S rDNA gene amplified with EHR 521 and EHR 747 primers). The overall prevalence of A. phagocytophila in I. ricinus was 3 % in adults but only 1.6% in nymphs.

Common European ticks, Ixodes ricinus, have been found in forest areas situated within the boundaries of big cities, and in areas changed by anthropogenic pressure. Monitoring I. ricinus, in the areas used by the public for recreation and leisure, makes it possible to assess the risk of infection with the diseases they transmit. The objective of this study was the comparison of the seasonal activity of ticks, I. ricinus, in the afforested areas of the city of Olsztyn and its surroundings. Material and methods. This survey was conducted at sites located in the afforested areas of Olsztyn and within the Warmiński Forest situated about 15 km from Olsztyn. Ticks, I. ricinus, were caught every 10-14 days from April to October 2001 by the commonly applied method of flagging. During each catch, the temperature (T) and relative humidity (%RH) was measured with a thermohygrometer, 1 m above the duff level. Results. The tick population density at the Warmiński Forest site was higher than that at the sites within the city limits (116.8 and 20.5 ticks per 100 m², respectively). Two peaks of tick activity were recorded in this area - the spring peak in June and the autumn peak (much lower) in September. The activity of ticks in the afforested area within the city limits was much lower - only one (spring) peak occurred, which at most sites was observed in June. At all sites, included in the study, the peak activity of ticks was observed in April. Conclusion. The study suggests that the afforested areas outside the city are more dangerous to people than the area within the city because of the large number of ticks there.

The article presents the results of researche ( 1999-2000) on numbers and seasonal activity of Ixodes ricinus in selected lakesides and forests habitats of Szczecin and on occurence of the spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in ticks. A total of 8065 ticks were collected from 6 localities: 647 larvae, 4549 nymphs, 1624 females and 1244 males. The spirochetes B. burgdorferi were found (using the PCR techniques) in 2271 specimens e.c. 28,1 % whole population. Numbers infected larvae were 216 (33,4 %), nymphs 1215 (26,7 %), females 490 (30,6 %), males 350 (28,1 %). This study shows that examinated habitats where I. ricinus is present are risk areas of human infection with Lyme disease spirochaetes.

Tick-borne pathogens are common in the natural environment, but their occurrence has a focal character. They occur in the natural environment in the form of the enzootic sources of infection. The general components include the animal reservoir, amplifiers and the efficient vector. However, the particular role of components can differ depending on the pathogen, the host range and possible transmission routes. Animal reservoir of pathogen are vertebrate animals, being the hosts of pathogens. In Europe these are small or medium-sized mammals and sometimes birds that feed on the ground. The competence of an animal reservoir is determined by the ability to communicate the infection; long-term persistence of the pathogen in the host; long-duration of infectivity of the animal for ticks; a sufficient number of animals in the endemic region. Amplifiers for ticks are artiodactyls. They are hosts for nymphs and adult ticks, thereby making it possible for ticks to propagate and maintain the proper size of their population. Efficient vector for pathogen are ticks. The first characteristic feature of efficient vectors is feeding duration exceeding 24 hours; the high density of the tick population. The conditions necessary to consider ticks as efficient vectors are met in Central Europe by the Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and D. marginatus ticks. There are the general differences in biology between Ixodes persulcatus complex ticks and Dermacentor ticks, affecting their different role and ability in pathogens spreading – the range of hosts; the ability to inhabiting of various environments and resistance to unfavourable conditions; the duration of larvae and nymphs activity. The combination of tick’s biology, pathogen ability to transmission, and mammal hosts’ competence, determines the particular role of larvae, nymphs and adults in pathogen circulation in the natural environment, as well as transmission to new hosts.

Opis:
The ticks /xodes ricinus were collected during three growing seasons in forested areas of north-western Poland. The ticks were collected by flagging at 30 sites. The specimens collected (nymphs and adults) were subjected, after an appropiate treatment, to indirect immunofluorescence analysis (IFA). In addition, effects of temperature and atmospheric precipitation on the tick infection with the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi were investigated based on data supplied by the Institute of Meteorology. A total of 8519 individuals of /. ricinus were collected at the sampling sites within May-October of three consecutive years. The pool of individuals obtained consisted of 7356 nymphs, 559 females, and 604 males. The B. burgdorferi prevalence varied rather widely, from 10 to 19%. Compared to nymphs, adult individuals showed a higher infection rate. A relationship between infection rate and /. ricinus activity in different years and months was studied in detail. The boreliosis risk was found to increase with increasing tick activity. On the other hand, no correlation was found between the meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation), tick abundance, and the B. burgdorferi infection rate.

Opis:
Background. Ixodes ricinus tick species is the most common tick in Poland and is the primary vector of many pathogens. The aim of this study was to determine the infestation of three species of game animals: roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) from forest area of north−western Poland. Material and methods. Examined ticks have been collected from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). Results. Single specimen of roe deer harboured from 1 to 9 ticks (mean value 3,6), red deer – from 1 to 8 ticks (mean value 4,4) and wild boar – from 1 to 3 ticks (mean value 2,3). Prevalence of ticks at roe deer was 44,2%, red deer – 40 % and wild boar – 6%. Statistical analysis revealed that difference in tick prevalence between roe deer and red deer is not significant in contrast to difference between roe deer and wild boar and between red deer and wild boar, so, most likely, prevalence of tickborne pathogens is larger in examined ruminants than in wild boar. Examined species (especially ruminants) play important role in maintaining of tickborne pathogens in a local habitat, not only as a potential reservoir, but also as hosts of I. ricinus ticks.

Opis:
The maintenance of Borrelia burgdorferi s.1. in the environment is dependent on the zoonotic cycle involving tick vectors and certain reservoir hosts. It is well known, that the same species of wild rodents, as well as the vector Ixodes ricinus, are often co-infected with at least two genomospecies of B. burgdorferi s.1.: B. afzelii and B. garinii. The ticks collected from two rodent species: Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis were examined for the presence of B. burgdorferi s.1., as well as for B. garinii and B. afzelii. In this study, an immunofluorescent antibody assay (lFA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols were used. The high level of infestation in rodents (90% for C. glareolus and nearly 100% for A. flavicollis) shows that wild rodents are important hosts of the immature stages of I. ricinus. A high percent of Borrelia positive ticks collected from bank voles and yellow necked mice; above 7% determined by 1FA and 2% determined by PCR, elearly revealed that these species of animals are competent zoonotic reservoirs of B. burgdorferi s.l.
