Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the quality of habitat and the quality of Scots pine wood. We focused on the wood from mature stands growing on poor habitats on inland dunes in the Notecka Forest and on former farmlands (central and western Poland). We selected 12 trees, from which we took wood samples for tree ring investigation. We determined the age of trees, width of increments, share of late− and hardwood, and the moisture and density of the wood. Samples were weighed with 0.001 g accuracy and their volume was determined with hydrostatic method. Next, samples were dried and their mass was determined again. The obtained results were used to calculate: initial and conventional wood density as well as moisture content of each sample. Properties of the examined wood derived both from Notecka Forest as well as from farmlands were advantageous from the point of view of its technical quality. Mean width of annual increments, both near−pith and near−circumferential, ranged from 1.70 to 1.99 mm and qualified analysed wood as the narrow−ringed. The examined wood characterised high proportion of latewood, close to the upper limit given in literature for standard conifer wood and by high density. Mean share of latewood in the near−pith increments ranged from 18.9 to 30.6%, while in near−circumferential increments – from 34.3 to 45.7%. The highest average conventional density amounted to 507 kg/m³, whereas the lowest – to 466 kg/m³. The obtained results revealed that the wood from the Notecka Forest had favorable properties in terms of technical quality. It had the characteristics of slow−grown wood and was characterized by a high proportion of latewood in annual increments and a conventional density higher than the one reported in the literature.

Opis:
The common juniper is a well−known arboreal plant with wide range of the occurrence and small habitat requirements. It is the most numerous coniferous shrub in Poland, sometimes taking shape of small tree. There is no sufficient data about the anatomy as well as physical and mechanical properties of common juniper wood in available literature. Hence, the objectives of this paper were to supplement the knowledge about the properties and anatomy of the juniper wood. The nine trunks of the common juniper of column shape were harvested to this investigation. These small trees with height up to 5 meters were 34−38 years−old. They grew on postagricultural area on brown podzol (common sand) in Łomża Forest District (E Poland). It is a sunny area on the rim of subcontinental fresh coniferous forest – one of the typical and favourable habitat for the common juniper in Poland. We analysed the microstructural elements of common juniper wood. The main component of the microstructure are short (average length 2.5 mm) and thin−walled tracheids (wall thickness from 2.4 µm in traheids of spring wood to 4.2 µm in tracheids of summer wood). Domination of this type of microstructural elements has influence on physical and mechanical properties of wood. Investigated wood characterised with low coefficient of shrinkage. The volumetric coefficient of shrinkage is 10.2%, so the wood has not tendency to crack and distort. The common juniper wood has slightly higher density (562 kg/m3 in air−dry state) than Scots pine wood and similar hardness, shear strength (91 MPa), static bending strength (85 MPa) and compression strength parallel to grain (49 MPa). The latter is directly proportional to density of the wood. The other mechanical properties of common juniper wood: modulus of elasticity and tension strength parallel to grain are significantly lower than for Scots pine wood. It is the influence of wood microstructure, not rectilinear arrangement of cell in wood and significant content of juvenile wood. Considering these aspects and modes dimensions of common juniper raw material, the potential use are different including small wooden articles especially kitchen accessories.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to investigate and compare structural, mechanical and physical properties of wood of Norway spruce growing on experimental plot in Rogów (central Poland). The planting material consisted of seeds sourced from six selected provenances. Three of them originated from lowlands, while the others have mountain origins (tab. 1). The plot was established in 1975 and the wood was harvested in 2010. Wood samples were prepared and measured according to the Polish Standards describing those procedures. The following properties were subjected to the research and statistical analyses: average tree−ring width, share of latewood, wood density, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, modulus of elasticity in static bending and the coeffi− cients of compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, and modulus of elasticity in static bending. Results of the investigation were correlated in the frame of each provenance. Wood density determines values of compression strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending. The higher wood density, the higher values of the mechanical properties. Ordering provenances by the wood density demonstrates the same results as ordering by values of compression strength parallel to grain. The high values of density and mechanical properties prove good technical quality of the analysed wood. The structural properties (the average tree−ring width and the share of latewood) are correlated to the wood density as well. They are additional features to describe wood quality, but are not as accurate as the mechanical properties. The quality of wood from all investigated provenances is high, what makes impossible to distinguish wood from selected provenances using applied features. Wood from Nowe Ramuki and Kartuzy (i.e. lowland) provenances has the best quality parameters, while one from Istebna Bukowiec and Stronie Śląskie (mountain) provenances demonstrated the worst properties (tab. 2). The results do not prove the opinion about the best quality of Norway spruce wood originating from the mountains.

Opis:
The wood present in trade in Poland named as ‘Siberian larch’, in fact belongs to two tree species: Larix sibirica Ledeb. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzen. The term itself is rather associated with the origin of wood. While Larix sibirica wood is the subject of many research, characteristics of Larix gmelinii still require additions. The main aim of this paper was to describe the technical properties of Dahurian larch wood. We characterised also the microstructure of the wood. Moreover, durability against fungi−caused brown rot was tested. The wood from the Chabarowsk area (Russia) was tested. The properties of wood were determined in accordance with the recom−mendations of the Polish standards. The obtained results allow to conclude that Dahurian larch wood is characterized by medium shrinkage and typical shrinkage anisotropy (total radial shrinkage was 5.0% and in the tangential direction 7.6%). With the average density of this wood in an air−dry state equal to 620 kg/m3, average mechanical properties are associated – modulus of elasticity 12.5 GPa and Janka hardness on the cross−section of 57 MPa. These values are similar to those of Siberian larch. Dahurian larch heartwoods is characterized by low durability (4th class of natural durability to fungi in a 5−degree scale). It causes that wood used in external environment require special attention and use of wood preservatives.

Opis:
The increasing social demand for food products collecting from the forests has beem observed currently. It should be assumed that one of the more and more important non−wood forest products in Poland is silver birch sap. Research in this area should concern not only the proper methods of its collection and yield, but also the rules of selecting forest stands and trees for its collection, as well in the context of protection of forest ecosystems, especially the quality of the obtained product and the safety of its consumption. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of air temperature on the daily volume of collected birch sap, determine the dependence of the volume of sap obtained on the selected physical parameters of the sap, as well as determine if there are changes in the values of the parameters tested as a function of time. It was not proved that the volume of the daily sap leak is related to the parameter of the refractive value, dry matter and electrolytical conductivity. It was found that the volume of the sap obtained is not significantly affected by the temperature on the day of the collection nor at the night immediately preceding the leak, while the relation between the intensity of the leak and thermal conditions several tens of hours earlier was indicated. Moreover, it was not shown that there was an optimal, determinable term in which birch sap is characterized by the most favorable parameters in terms of suitability for the production of birch syrup. It was also found that in the case of commercial birch sap harvesting on large scale, it is advisable to harvest and combine the sap from as many trees as possible. The necessity of further studies on the food and industrial usefulness of birch sap, including geographical, habitat and age variability of birch stands was underlined as well.

Opis:
In most cases, mechanical site preparation (MSP) is a precondition if high−quality (natural or artificial) regeneration of forests is to be achieved. However, the measures involved here may differ in terms of the level of intervention of the soil environment, at both the surface and deeper down. The choice of MSP methods should be based on climatic conditions, site type and the species whose renewal is sought, while the effect should improve conditions for the emergence and growth of the young generation of trees, with the influence on the soil environment being limited as far as possible. The research sought to compare physical and chemical features of the soils of the microhabitats created in clear−cut areas as a result of MSP using either an LPz double mould−board forest plough (furrow and ridge), an active plough (furrow and ridge) and a forest mill (belt and beyond the belt) as compared with unscarified soil. Investigated physical features included grain size (content of sand, silt and clay), bulk density and actual moisture, while the chemical ones: pHH2O and pHKCl, exchangeable acidity, total content of N and C and the C/N ratio, P2O5 content and base cations Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Na+. The most invasive MSP method for the soil environment is the active plough, which leaves the ridge exposed to processes of the decomposition of organic matter (and the highest content of N, C, Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+). Equally, this method may pose the greatest threat of mineral components of the soil being leached, with impoverishment of the habitat ensuing. The forest mill in turn offers the least invasive MSP. Most of the physical and chemical features of soil (other than exchangeable acidity and pHH2O and pHKCl) both in the belt areas and beyond them differed little from the those characterising non−scarified soil. Also the analysed features determined for the furrows ploughed by the active or LPz ploughs or the belt prepared using the forest mill did not differ significantly.

Opis:
Siberian yellow pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour.) has increasingly appeared in the merchant offers on the market of raw wood materials in Poland. However, the knowledge of the technical characteristics of its wood is still insufficient for it is based primarily on the data and experiences from abroad, often from the literature of the former USSR. The main aim of this study was to determine selected physical and mechanical properties of Siberian yellow pine wood such as linear and volumetric shrinkage, compressive strength along the fibers, the tensile strength along the fibers, the tensile strength across the fibers, static bending and modulus of elasticity, flexural dynamic and impact strength, hardness, resistance to splitting and cleavage amd shear strength. Futhermore, the resistance to decay caused by Coniophora puteana (Schum., Fr.) Karst., as well as the examination of the wood structure, assessing the dimensions and arrangement of the structural elements in particular were conducted. The results show that Siberian yellow pine wood has a number of similarities to Scots pine wood in terms of the structure. The wood is very light, with a density of 391 kg/m3 and very soft (Janka hardness on transverse cross section 23 MPa). The mechanical properties of Siberian yellow pine wood are closely related to its density and much lower when compared with Scots pine. Shear strength equalled to 67 MPa, static bending strength – 65 MPa and compression strength along the fibers – 49 MPa. The durability to brown rot fungus of Siberian pine wood is comparable to Scots pine (3rd class according to PN−EN 350−2:2000).
