Opis:
Changes in silvicultural and phytopathological parameters have been assessed in a 55−year−old pine stand established on post−agricultural land after 30 years from the application of three types of cutting (selective 10%, line every 4 and every 6 row) in this stand. It has been demonstrated that root rot causes changes in number and volume of merchantable timber of trees when protective treatments to stumps using the fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea are not applied during first improvement cuttings.

Opis:
An assessment of ectomycorrhizal fungi associated with Pinus sylvestris L. growing on abandoned post−agricultural soil was performed. The seedlings were growing at three different treatments of soil amendments (harvest residue, bark compost and sawdust). As a control treatment, the soil without any amendments was used. The comparison of ectomycorrhizal structure done ten years after the application of organic substrates showed no significant changes in species richness level. The most frequent taxa, irrespective of the treatment, was Wilcoxina sp. The result seems to be connected with high nitrogen level in the soil. Ectomycorrhizae of Cortinarius sp. and Pinirhiza spp. dominated in all treatments. The results showed that species richness and abundance of live and dead mycorrhizae depend on soil conditions, which are similar on treatment and control plots.

Opis:
The paper describes a „dispersed treatment” concept being a modified method of biological control of the root rot (using the fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea) in stands growing on post−agricultural lands. A comparative analysis of costs incurred during the application of the traditional method and a „dispersed treatment” method is presented in the paper. It has been demonstrated that the application of the proposed method brings about a significant reduction in costs.

Opis:
It has been proposed that artificial gaps are to be established in young pine stands by cutting an appropriate number of trees around the centres of infection (1−3 dying trees) and introducing Phlebiopsis gigantea to stumps. The treatment limits or significantly reduces root rot effects in trees and the risk of dis− ease development that may follow. The initiation of the biocoenotic nature of changes in pine monocultures ensures stand conversion (reconstruction) supported with the processes of natural succession.

Opis:
Three products (RotstopF, RotstopS and PGSuspension) based on lyophylised spores of registered isolates of Phlebiopsis gigantea and non−registered Polish PgIBL as a control were tested in Scots pine stumps locat−ed in 3 forest regions (north−west, north, east) of Poland in autumn 2007, spring 2008 and autumn 2008. One year later the presence of: a) subcortical mycelium and b) the fruit bodies of P. gigantea, and c) symp−toms of sapwood decay were counted and compared as Biological Treatment Efficacy (BTE) index. Obtained BTE values inform that generally PgSuspension preparation was the most effective if applied in spring 2008, whereas both Rotstop preparates showed similar and compared effectiveness in all terms of application. The differences in preparation efficacy between forest regions were found.

Opis:
Number of Melolontha grubs in forest soils reforested with Scots pine (Lubartów A, LA, Lubartow B, LB) and those in post agricultural soils afforested with this species (Swierczyna, SW) were assessed before (autumn 2011, spring 2012) and one year after (2013) planting. At the same time, mortality of seedlings was evaluated on both study sites. Pine sawdust was mixed with soil in rows (treatment T1) or applied under seedling roots just before planting in April 2012 (treatment T2). In May 2013, seedling mortality varied significantly, from 27.5% in LB to 51.0% in LA, whereas the differences between the treatments were not significant. The mean number of Melolontha grubs decreased from 35/0.15 m³ of soil in autumn 2011 to 3/0.15 m³ in spring 2012 and in spring 2013. The differences depended on the site, treatment and grubs spatial distribution in soil. Addition of sawdust did not influence either seedlings, or insects mortality. T2 was more beneficial for Scots pine seedlings growing on agricultural soils, while treatment T1 – for those on forest soils. On the other hand, pine sawdust applied under roots of the seedlings seemed to attract Melolontha spp. grubs.

young forest plantations
root−pest monitoring
Opis:
Root−feeding insects are an increasingly studied group of herbivores, whose impact on plant productivity and are some of the most damaging forest pests in Europe. Due to the mass feeding on the roots of seedlings and older trees in young plantation and stands, Melolonthinae larvae are classified as pests, which are the most dangerous on the land dedicated to afforestation. The research was located in the Wyszków Forest District (52°43'15' N; 21°39'03' E) on the mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest habitats. This study evaluated sawdust traps as the method for assessing abundance of Melolonthinae larvae in Scots pine plantations established artificially from open nursery, container production, and from natural regeneration. In spring 2015 i) ‘small sawdust pits’ in rows between seedlings, and ii) pits without soil in adjacent inter−rows as control were prepared. In spring and autumn 2016, and in spring 2017 sawdust and soil from both variants of pits were sieved and Melolonthinae larvae were counted and compared. The obtained results were analyzed in two ways. The first analysis compared the occurrence of grubs in small pits with or without sawdust, while the other one analysed influence of the time of making small pits, independently for the variant with or without sawdust. The final stage was to compare the number of Melolonthinae larvae in small pits between the origin of the seedlings. We found a greater number of grubs in spring assessment than in autumn. Both kinds of small pits showed higher number of Melolonthinae larvae when compared to traditional method of ‘great pits’. The number of Melolonthinae larvae was significantly higher on the plots with container seedlings than the others. The conceptual assumptions of this alternative and environmentally safe method of ‘sawdust traps’ seems to be optimistic.
